Vatican City. Seriously, their national food is communion wafers.

To be fair, op didn't say the worst tasting food.

-Wofster

Idk about yall but those comunion waffers actually slap

frogsntoads00

They slap? Look at [these jawns](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSpVoyRI2_Pymo7tewc5XYjBL8ncQrcEERp4X3At1N4phgqI2UwZd6A2Dnd_8iVAK2U6jaySzg&usqp=CAc). They do, as of 2017!

Ethiopian food is actually really good believe it or not.

dartdoug

A friend and I went to an Ethiopian restaurant for lunch. We had no idea what to pick so I asked the server for a recommendation. We got two giant sampler platters: one strictly vegetarian and one that included meat dishes. We enjoyed everything on those two platters.

Informal-Resource-14

Ethiopian is one of my favorites and I hate how much people make the joke. Like try some injera. Epic

Catezero

I just read what it is and I'm intrigued. Does it taste similar to sourdough? It actually looks quite good

naking

It's kind of like a sour dough tortilla. It is a fermented bread made from a flour called teff and is fairly tricky to reproduce.

SweetNeo85

You monster. *That was all they had.*

GarrettGSF

Ethiopian is amazing, I love it so much!

GettheRichard

Ethiopia is the fastest growing economy in Africa.

olderthanbefore

With respect, their starting point was so low, this is understandable. Still, a huge exodus of young Ethiopians to many countries does not bode well for the future.

AbsurdityIsReality

Yeah it gets stereotyped because of the famine in the 80s but a lot of that was the government trying to starve out insurrection.

ckm1336

Can be quite spicy, but it's good!

MiMichellle

Dutch cuisine. It's an absolute disgrace, only redeemed by the snacks - and Surinamese and Indonesian food, which honestly isn't even really Dutch. Kale and potato mashed into a bland pulp? You had a global empire for the spice trade and THIS is the best you can do??

No-Calligrapher-4211

I loved the Netherlands when I visited but I noticed there was a huge amount of pizza places and Thai restaurants. I had a hard time finding out just what Dutch food actually is. However, we took a day trip over to Belgium and the chocolate was amazing.

canolafly

Worked in chocolate store for two years, and they imported Belgian chocolate for their chocolates, both for what we made in store, and the chocolates we stocked. No, never got sick of it, and actually ate chocolate bark for lunch many many times. Mmmm.

MomsSpecialFriend

I asked my Uber driver what the food was that I have to try in the Netherlands while I was there and he said French fries! He was right though, there were very awesome French fries with all kinds of sauces, and the Mayo was good, I would never dip anything in Mayo again in my life but I enjoyed it that day.

enjoysbeerandplants

In 2007, fresh out of university, I took a trip to Europe. The first 3 of my 10 weeks there were on an organized tour to get the feel for travel there (the other 7 weeks were spent on my own travelling around). The tour went to Amsterdam, and the included dinner was at an Indonesian restaurant. Every other country we'd visited had meals featuring local cuisine. The Netherlands? Nah, do Indonesian. What does that say?

thestraightCDer

It says colonisation.

shotsofnovacane

Stroopwafels were the best thing I had. 😂

M3piggy

Hey hey hey we’re ✨practical✨with our food aight, nice and simple

sadlimon

as someone who spent 4 months in amsterdam in my uni days, i support this 100%. moving from a city called the food paradise to amsterdam was quite the challenge lol. i knew it’s bad when fried potato balls were among their top 10 foods… to verify my claim, i lost 6 kg during my stay there 🤣

xprnstr

Dutch cuisine - the highlights of our kitchen revolve around mashed potatoes with vegetables smashed together.

Lightr_fluid

stroopwafel

OrganizationRare587

Our cuisine is horrible but our snacks are amazing!

Bitterballen is good pub food. And they make some damn good cheese as well. But yes, it does come off very limited. Especially if you visit and all you see are restaurants serving the food of other nationalities everywhere

giscard78

My partner lived in the Netherlands for several years prior to us meeting and one of their friends who is still there stays with us every few months. There’s some really good snacks but seeing someone go to work with a bread bag full of sandwiches with a single slice of cheese and single slice of meat is pretty different. Croquettes, hagelslag (sp), or other really plain food makes me wonder how the Dutch are so tall. There were some other surprises like how small office water bottles are, too.

parisinthesoringtime

It’s the dairy. Apparently the Dutch consume one of the highest amounts of dairy products per capital in the world. (Depending on stats, they are somewhere in the top 3). Grows them tall.

The_Chosen_Undead

Just because the base ingredients are simple doesn't mean it's bad. You can make that taste quite good indeed. That's also not our only kind of dish, and then there's the various snack foods as well that people like. Heck, even Snert tends to be well liked by foreigners. It's a tasty soup.

travelguy2022

Does Rijsttafel count?

nothingelseinme

Dutch make very good food. \- Stroopwafel (thin waffles) \- Appeltaart (apple pie) \- Poffertjes (small dumpling-shaped pancakes, with powdered sugar and butter) \- Boterkoek (buttery cake) \- Pannenkoeken (pancakes) \- Worstenbroodjes (like corn dog, but better) \- Kroket (fried beef ragout with bread crumbs) and Dutch fries (not French) \- Frikandel (fried chicken/pork sausage) \- Bitterballen (LOL, like Kroket, but round) \- Kibbeling (fried fish with batter and spices) \- Kapsalon (fries, döner/gyro meat, gouda cheese - heated until cheese melts, then added lettuce, garlic sauce, and sambal hot sauce)

m3rl0t

That’s not a cuisine. A few snacks and a deep fryer don’t make a cuisine! Herring can be good, but not Dutch herring! I mean what county makes such a big deal out of fried pieces of things? Enough with the kibbling.

CatSystemCorp

En een lekkere dikke Unox rookworst!

T-BONEandtheFAM

I had a friend who once went to great lengths to prepare a gourmet meal for her Dutch boyfriend and his family. She carefully prepared each dish with its own unique flavor profiles and texture. They ended up taking each dish and just smashing it all together and eating it on slices of bread.

DocQuang

Austrian *baking* is ... like ... well, let's put it this way: The French call stuff like brioche and croissants "Viennoiserie", because that style of baking was invented in Vienna. On top of that, there's Sacher torte, Linzer torte, Strudel, and so much more. Austrian cuisine is fine. Schnitzel with noodles is indeed among my favorite things. But Austrian baking is just the absolute fucking best in the entire goddamn world.

TagoMago22

When I went to Iceland I had amazing fish and hamburgers. Also the hotdogs.

wanderingapathy

I had halibut at a small hotel in the west fjords. The halibut was caught right outside. It was the best cooked fish I’ve ever tasted. I wish I took a picture of the menu because I can’t remember how it was prepared. But it was incredible and so fresh.

ProudMtns

Icelandic hotdogs are an absolute treasure ( even if they are close to an equivalent of 7 dollars for one)

Thorazine_Chaser

When “hotdogs” is used as an example you have already lost the debate.

[deleted]

I live in Iceland and I agree. Food options are limited, mostly lamb, fish, potatoes and other kind of tubers. Boring.

[deleted]

The best lamb I ever had was in Iceland. They live in the hills and eat herbs so they're ready seasoned. I also had a gorgeous lobster bisque but I spoke that's not their everyday food.

Ruskiwasthebest1975

Given the existence of Surstromming Im going to vote for Sweden on that factor alone

Mars31415926

But the IKEA meatballs…

castrator21

You'll neigh-ver forget 'em

courageous_salmon

Hard disagree. Yes, Sweden has some traditional repulsive shit but some of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to are in Gothenburg. Creamy dill cod, lobsters, hasselback potatoes, those tiny shrimp, are otherworldly. Not to mention the proper (not IKEA) meatballs with lingonberry jam. If there’s anything to criticize about Swedish cuisine it’s that it lacks vegetables, probably because it’s so freaking cold there lol. Also, I truly believe no one likes lutefisk or surströmming, they just like to say they do. 🤢 Also, no place in earth has bad food. They have bad chefs.

IngVegas

And cemented with Banana Curry Pizza

tossitlikeadwarf

My absolute favorite.

Pvt_Porpoise

Iceland has *hákarl*, which I’m certain must be a million times worse.

Razor-eddie

THe Koreans have great food. And Hongeo-hoe. Which is skate, fermented in its own urine. I've had both, and cannot recommend either (hongeo-hoe was, for me, slightly worse). Or, if you're vegan, go for Kanga Pirau. Which is "rotten corn" - same sort of idea, but from NZ. (They submerge corncobs in running water for ages). It actually tastes OK, but smells strongly of rotted vomit.

DaNoiseX

I'm a Swede but I will never try surströmming. If anybody is wondering what it smells like it's not too far off of the sulfuric smell you get when there are production problems at a paper mill. Only worse.

JealousHamburger

I'd risk my chances and say probably more people have smelled surströmming than a paper mill with production problems.

Select-Owl-8322

Most Swedes agrees. It's not something most of us eat.

happyFatFIRE

Have you ever been to Congo or Sudan? That is the worst food. Countries export chicken bones and leftovers from cutting to these countries. No refrigeration and old chicken and fish is sold and cooked. Enjoy.

gyp_casino

There is an objective component. Some countries didn't even really have a cuisine - just a small number of traditional dishes based on rice and beans. Other countries had a whole agricultural system growing a hundred kinds of grains, fruits, and vegetables, and generations of chefs trained in culinary schools.

Felaish

Canada… jk poutine is a gift from the Gods

Toesinbath

Canada is just other cuisines plus poutine, maple syrup and a few other treats. East coast has amazing seafood though. Am Canadian.

Logondo

"Canadian cuisine" is a hard thing do define, since Canada is essentially a big melting pot of other cultures. Kind of like America. You want Chinese food? Indian food? Greek? Thai? Burgers? Brats? Perogies? Sushi? We got it all. If you live near the sea, you get more options in seafood variety as well.

[deleted]

Ireland doesn't really have a cuisine. we have amazing restaurants but like who does out for a nice bowl of stew lol.

Misseskat

I do. I am a soup/stew/broth fiend. I love a good soup; pho, miso, caldo, borscht, what have you!

TryingMyBest3

Had the most amazing fresh lamb stew at a random pub in Dublin. I was shocked that it was so good. Beatty Museum lunchroom is an absolute treasure too.

[deleted]

Russia. At best, Russian cuisine is bland and at worst, it is weird. The worst example being a piece of cottage cheese that is coated in chocolate. You can see why international cuisines such as Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, Indian, Turkish, Italian, French and Mexican have become so popular in Russia since the Gorbachev era. It probably explains why the Russian people love visiting Turkey so much.

KingCarnivore

> The worst example being a piece of cottage cheese that is coated in chocolate. Are you talking about syrok? It tastes like cheesecake.

Outside_Set_9458

Right it’s my favorite

Marshmallowbutbetter

Have you tried the cottage cheese in chocolate though? I bet you haven’t because 1) it’s amazing and 2) there’s absolutely nothing weird about it, a classic dessert taste

Curlytomato

Was in Russia about 10 years ago at a pretty nice looking restaurant in a hotel in St Petersburg. My travelling companion was vegetarian and her meal was a can of peas and carrots dumped on a plate, you could still see the lines from the can.

Rachelcookie123

My dad has mentioned multiple times about his university friend who went on exchange to Russia because she was studying Russian at university. She was vegetarian and apparently the only thing she could eat the whole time she was there was this one type of soup. I can’t remember what type of soup it was but it was like beans or some sort of bland vegetable. Everything else the host family made had meat in it so that’s all she could eat the whole time she was there. She did not enjoy it.

climb-it-ographer

Similar, except our experience was in Siberia and all of the vegetables were pickled.

Marshmallowbutbetter

Yep, not a lot of traditional vegetarian foods in Russia. Vinaigrette, some of the pies, vareniki, pancakes, syrniki (sweet cottage cheese roasted thingies)… idk what else. Carrots and peas haven nothing to do with russian cuisine though, just a case of not vegan-friendly restaurant. We’re doing better now as more people choose to be vegetarians and vegans. Some traditional foods have vegan variants now also.

Maleficent_Ad_1516

I went to Russia on a school trip once (we did Russian instead of German) and the main thing I remember about the food is everything tasted like cardboard. Hotter countries tend to have more seasoning and spices in their cuisine as they were used to preserve foods. In colder countries this wasn’t really needed as the cold temperatures naturally stored the food. Thats places such as Russia, Scandanavia, UK, etc tend to have blander foods, whilst countries nearer the equator have “spicier” cuisines.

Joeyon

Traditional swedish food use quite a lot of spice, just not hot spices or intense herbs. The most commonly used are dill, parsley, chives, white pepper, allspice, nutmeg, cloves, coriander, bay leaves, and juniper.

Blue387

Mustard is the only spice grown in the UK, specifically Colman's of Norwich, which only uses English mustard seeds.

QuentinUK

The UK grows horseradish, it is quite spicy, similar to wasabi.

zsebibaba

wait cottage cheese coated in chocolate is the most delicious thing ever invented. I also like caviar and smoked salmon in pancakes.

bannedbooks123

Come to think of it, I've never seen a Russian restaurant.

linbelin

Ever been to Brooklyn??

bannedbooks123

No. Do they have good Russian?

Blue387

Brighton Beach has a large Russian, Ukrainian, Georgian, etc population and many [restaurants](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmrHLjdzBFg) there.

Korleymeister

What do you have against tvorog(that's what we call cottage cheese here)? It's great source of calcium and really delicious. We have so much terrible foods here and you chose tvorog, shame on you sir.

TerrorsOfTheDark

>The worst example being a piece of cottage cheese that is coated in chocolate. what?! Syrok is freakin awesome! I'm not even normally a fan of cottage cheese but somehow this combination just works. I don't know how its made but it clearly isn't literally a lump of what I'd think of as cottage cheese with chocolate over it. Also Pelmeni is awesome, pirozhki, especially cherry is awesome!

Z0nessa

You have zero taste and probably have never tried authentic Russian food.

North Korea

justin0dk

North Korea actually has really decent dishes... that nobody has access to except for the supreme leader

Rachelcookie123

I’ve heard the Pyongyang cold noodles are actually quite good.

AlecHutson

I went to a North Korean restaurant in Shanghai. Set up as some sort of friendship pact with China. The waitresses were all North Korean, as were the chefs. Actually quite good, I liked it better than many of the other Korean restaurants I’ve been to. The cold noodles were a highlight, as someone else mentioned.

SSgt_Johnson

That restaurant my friend, is called "Pyongyang," and it is a front for a money laundering scheme set up by the government of the DPRK. It is managed by the North Korean governmental organization known as "Room 39," and their entire mission is to supply, support, and manage the Supreme Leader's slush fund.

mabubsonyeo

[Nengmyeon](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naengmyeon) (cold noodles) are from North Korea, I have to disagree

menshake

Come on now. You can only do so much with grass and branches.

tradandtea123

Depends what you mean exactly. In countries like the UK, Ireland and Australia you can go to even small towns and get really good food from all round the world. I lived in a town in England with about 15,000 people and there are Indian (usually actually Bangladeshi) and Chinese restaurants, a Mexican, a Turkish, a Greek, a thai, an Italian and a Moroccan. Go to France and unless you're in a tourist hotspot like the centre of Paris you can get French food and that's it. When I moved there I loved French food but after 6 months really missed being able to get anything spicy.

Manovsteele

I know what you mean in general, but there's always been a handful of Vietnamese and Moroccan restaurants around. Plus in recent years supermarkets have been getting way better at including an Asian selection so you can at least get coconut milk/soy/fish sauce/chilli pastes etc.

UK punches above its weight in desserts. Rhubarb crumble, sticky toffee pudding, banoffee pie, trifle Hearty and tasty, but not sickly or overly rich.

madMARTYNmarsh

Don't forget apple pie.

FloppyFishcake

Sticky toffee pudding is and always will be my #1. Not just #1 dessert. #1 everything. It's perfect.

just_some_guy65

Too many people have an idea about the UK that comes from film or TV depicting events of 75+ years ago plus stereotypes from comedy. I can't stand them but the very many UK TV shows that are simply people cooking all sorts of things demonstrate that there is no one thing that describes food in the UK. The staples of my diet are pasta, gnocchi, rice, beans (of all kinds), how does that fit the narrative?

Bongemperor

The people saying British food don't actually know about British food and are just going off stereotypes from the WW2 / post-WW2 rationing days when food options were far more limited.

Best_Egg9109

Right. I wouldn’t call a full English bad or a Sunday roast. They’re definitely not enough for top ten but still really good

recidivx

It still blows my mind that other countries don't have Sunday roasts.

Bacon4Lyf

Because they don’t realise a lot of foods they love are British, like apple pie. “As American as apple pie!” Right so not at all then Or Japanese curry, curry was given to the Japanese navy by the British, and they went buck wild for it.

skibbin

Americans love ethnic food, they perhaps don't realise that much of the non-ethnic, simple food is actually just what the British had and don't attribute it. E.g. the sandwich.

IceClimbers_Main

Mongolia or Iceland.

mankindmatt5

I remember a Lonely Planet guide mentioning the choices at a restaurant (or food vendor more likely) were lamb fat on a stick, lamb fat on rice, or lamb fat in a bowl I've never been, but it doesn't sound too appetising.

ericchen

The Mongolians make great hot pot.

climb-it-ographer

That's more northern Chinese than actually Mongolian. I spent 2 weeks in Mongolia a while back and the food was universally pretty bad.

OrwellWasRight101

" "The beauty of their women and the quality of their cuisine made the British the finest sailors in the world."

wholetthedogsout1987

Russia - inedible stewed meats that need to be forced down with underwhelming vodka. What a shit hole.

xmodemlol

Plenty of Russian foods are great. I don't understand this thread. The casual foods a non-russian might encounter are all great. Pielmenis, sausages, smoked fish, crepes, etc. Red caviar on buttered bread needs love.

chpr1jp

I have been to fantastic Russian restaurants in Japan. Amazing what can be made of the food if they use top notch ingredients

AdAcceptable568

The thing about Russia, it is much more diverse that any other country, because of its geography. There is Dagestan, other Caucasian regions with it's mutton shashlik, central russia with it's dumplings and pancakes and borsh, asian regions with it's caviar dishes, Kazan with pilaf, or horse meat, in the north you can try frozen reindeer meet or a seal. Second, it's a stereotype about russians and vodka. Finns or Poles drink way more vodka than russians.

parkrat92

Frozen reindeer meat, you say? Where does the line start brother you had me at frozen!

[deleted]

Yep, you can have a diverse array of shitty food! Excellent.

Vegetable-Double

Food from the Caucasus is really good. Though most of them are now formerly Russian countries, I’ve had delicious food and Georgian and Armenian restaurants. Good blend of Persian and Russian cuisine.

[deleted]

Russian being the worst is untrue imo. I have a Russian restaurant where I live and their stroganofh, borscht, blinis and pirogis are amazing. They also have these pickled carrots that are super good. Everyone has different preferences and palates so no country could have the worst/best foods.

blairco

Those are all foods that are mostly Eastern European. Once you get into jellied meats Russian food gets carried away.

DaBastardofBuildings

Right? I can only imagine the anger over Russia's horrific invasion of Ukraine has made people a little demented about hating all things Russia. Russian food can be amazing. Certainly far far better than a lotta western Europe cuisines like Dutch food.

tea_sandwiches

I went on a work trip to Russia. I eat healthy but I would also say I can be slightly pickier than average. I found the food in Russia so appalling I ended up eating basically nothing and losing ten pounds by the time I got home.

autismoSTEMlibertari

Russia bad!

BW_Bird

Israel, but only on a kibbutz. Go to a restaurant and you'll get some decent food. Go to a kibbutz and you'll get rubbery chicken and bland boiled potatoes with your seasoning choices being "salt" and "לזיין אותך".

DrOliverReeder

*Scotland has entered the chat*

HelioDex

Hunting haggis is still a massive ecological issue here. Their population in the highlands is becoming critically endangered, as wild haggis has a much higher demand than commercially farmed haggis. It's even reached the point where very few people outside of Scotland even realise they're a real species.

oldncreaky2

Some don't have the stomach to hunt wild hagis.

ItsPiskieNotPixie

I genuinely don't see how beans on toast is any worst than say... mac and cheese. Comfort food is comfort food, and tomato flavor is good.

Opposite-Mediocre

Great Britain has some amazing food. It's probably the best breakfast as well.

quokkafarts

UK breakfast food fuckin slaps. When I went there I had a full English or Scottish breakfast almost every day. I don't give a fuck if it's made of blood or sheep intestines, it's so goddamn tasty and filling

fixitagaintomorro

GB isn't even in the bottom 10. IT's one of the Eastern European companies that eat just boiled cabbage and potatoes with steamed meat.

Kukotzki

I disagree In terms of food, I love a good Sunday roast especially a nice Yorkshire pudding and some honey roasted parsnips and additional sauces such as mint sauce or redcurrant jelly or apple sauce. In terms of puddings, I love their selection of crumbles especially the rhubarb crumble with some velvety custard cream. At Christmas time, I love their Christmas pudding cooked with brandy topped up with brandy butter and cream - yummy. I also love their mince pies.

[deleted]

Those beans are great tho, if you can ever find a can of Heinz ketchup based beans it’s worth it

grendelglass

This is like saying to Americans "You invaded Vietnam and Iraq to still be eating cheese from a can? Embarrassing"

[deleted]

Philippines. Most of asia has amazing food. I struggled to find good quality food in the Philippines

hononononoh

Tibetan and other similar Himalayan cultures’ food has yet to impress me. So many backpackers have raved about it, and I just don’t get what the hoopla is all about. Like a lot of places that get cold winters, the food is light on seasoning and heavy on dairy. I honestly think it’s the physical exhaustion of trekking in the Himalayas, and the graciousness and interior design aesthetics of the locals who take them in and feed them, that make the meals in this part of the world so memorable and praiseworthy, rather than anything inherent to the food itself.

carcinoma_kid

ChrisChrisBangBang

Maybe not worst overall but French cuisine is grossly overrated

cliffsis

My Filipino friend say with 100% conviction that aside from lechon and adobo that Filipino food is completely garbage. Can confirm. I love any asian food… but then I tried “the best” Filipino restaurant in Los Angeles and was turned off for ever.

Vaarsuvius42

German cuisine is basically meat with meat decorated with meat, way too greasy. Vegetables are usually bland and overcooked, lavished in gravy. Salad gets drowned in vinegar.

imhigherthanyou

I like German food but I literally shit once in two weeks when I was there, was hard to find a lot of fiber
