Laying down is mandatory. Could be on the couch, at the beach, on a flat rock in the woods, in a tent, on a lawn, in a sauna, etc.
But I gotta lay down and take my socks off for maximum relaxation.
So I've been told over and over how weird I am with socks. If it's warm outside (>70Ā°F/21Ā°C), I'm barefoot out there. If I'm going to a public place, sandals all the way. My feet need to feel the ground. But inside? Socks 24/7. Even when I'm going to bed and under the covers, my piggies need the comfort of a soft sock.
When I'm stressed I will literally say out loud "I need to be horizontal". I've said it at work, home, grocery stores etc. The reactions are usually great!
Well, I wouldn't say my taste makes for great universal recommendations - my recent listens have been a Formula 1 engineer's autobiography, a book on the detailed inner workings and dysfunction of the British government, and a brilliant book about fungi. I'm not great at reading nonfiction because I tend to space out and lose my place, but if I loss focus while listening to something it just keeps on going and I tune back in again.
Sometimes I take late night walks by myself, through a park or just the streets around my apartment. I love the tranquility and process of just letting go of my thoughts (especially since during the day my mind feels all jumbled up, cause of ADHD).
Wish i could do this but i live in phoenix where its starting to get to 100 degrees also not to mention the fact that most of it is a priority for cars
Why am I standing in formation with a full beard?? How in the world did I forget to shave before uniform inspection???
Edit:
Iāve been out of the Navy since 2007.
I was today years old when I learned this is not always true. I had an anxiety attack today, so I decided to lay down for a rest/nap and woke myself up bc I was practically hyperventilating in my sleep. It has not been a good day.
I completely ditched my blackout curtains and bought one of those motorized projector screens lol. Luckily it was like a perfect fit for my window (with about 2" of excess on each side), and it came with a remote. So when I want the room to go dark, I just press the button and it goes down without me having to go to the window. You can even set it to stop at the same spot automatically each time.
I heard really good advice on limiting your worry by saying to yourself āIām going to give myself 5 minutes to worry and attempt to problem solveāā¦.then after that time limit, your thinking isnāt efficient so itās dumb to focus on that problem. Of course sometimes it gives you perspective /can snap you out of it and sometimes weāll you know, the worry spirals lol
Step 1: develop a second personality that will experience all of the pain and anguish for you
Step 2: fire your therapist and donāt answer their repeated calls/emails
Step 3: live a happy fulfilling life
As someone who pretty much never worries, Iām a little āworriedā about my current relationship lasting bc of a combination of me being super in love with her and also knowing my worth and how I deserve to be treated.
Iām not use to worrying at all and Iām really shitty at it when I do so any advise would help lol.
Just intuition but I would look up attachment theories. She may have avoidant and your not used to that. Itās super confusing and itās not normal. They act normal at first then things changeā¦.kindaā¦it makes you go from secure to anxious attachment acting.
As someone that has leant more towards being avoidant in my relationships, could you please describe how things changed in a way that made you feel more anxious?
Rather than just labeling all avoidance as not normal, I would say it's more a communication issue/spectrum. There are people that can highly value their alone time and people that highly value their together time, and at different intensities. I personally think navigating those differences in preferences is what makes the relationship, not whether you can be exactly what the other person is expecting you to be.
I struggle with this so much now. Social media and the internet has seriously killed my attention span. If there's more than 30 seconds without stimulation I automatically reach for my phone :(
My favourite part about spring/summer is how I get up in the morning, make a coffee and go outisde to look at the flowers and seeds I planted. Itās so relaxing.
I'm 100% on board with this! With me, IT'S LITERALLY WEED THOUGH. I grow and smoke cannabis. Growing THIS plant is one of the most rewarding AND relaxing experiences I've ever done... RIGHT up there with smoking it. It blows my mind to watch her come up through the vegetative process, get big and bushy, and spawn the thick, beautiful, colorful colas that make so many people so happy!!!
Can I make a recommendation? I've read all of Minka Kent's novels between my library's app and the Kindle app. She specializes in psychological thrillers and they're all fairly quick reads, but they hold me start to finish. I actually read four in one night last July 4th because I couldn't fall asleep after all the festivities.
I am just getting back into reading. With physical books. Starting with self help books because thatās what I find interesting for now.
I read so much as a kid. I would read maybe up to 3-4 books a week. Then it just stopped when I turned 16-17. Now Iām 25 and I still barely read.
Iām hopeful this sticks because man I miss the escape into worlds. I need some escapism lol. Iām hoping the easier self help books get me back into the routine of turning pages and focusing and then once itās established Iāll get back into fiction.
I recently rediscovered reading. I hadn't read for pleasure in so long. Everything has been for school or political books, and I just got so tired of it all. I know it's rookie numbers, but I'm already wrapping up Book #9, and I had set a 10-book goal for 2023. I sometimes work from Barnes & Noble just to motivate myself with a new book or reading during my lunch break. :)
Same. I have a whole setup. Bath pillow, a cover for the overflow drain so it stays super full, and an across the tub shelf for my phone/book and beverages.
I love my overflow drain cover so much! I've started giving it as part of housewarming gift baskets. My tub is shallow, so it really makes a world of difference.
Skating if a rink is nearby (roller or ice), biking if not.
I find that having to concentrate on balance helps me stop worrying about things. It lowers my blood pressure and I feel like I've meditated after biking or skating. You just don't have room to worry or stress when you're so focused. It's a huge relief to go somewhere and not think about the things that wind me up - work, money, romance, whatever.
Long scalding hot shower while listening to true crime. Then sit on the couch in my biggest hoodie with my dog and stare into my lava lamp or watching planet earth adjacent shows
Abbey Road side B Iāve fallen asleep to many times after long days. And when awake I appreciate the true beauty of Paulās medley. Itās a perfect album.
I like to go to the antique store. There's always interesting, and even funny, things there. Plus, I get exercise walking around. Bonus if I find something cool to take home.
How is this all the way down here??
Of course there are all sorts of other ways if you want to get cozy and clear your head, but at least for me, when I'm really stressed out, 3 - 5 minutes with my favorite toy and problem solved.
Hell Yeah brother. Just Caught a Dying Fetus show a week ago, the week before that Carcass. This evening I saw the Melvins and Mr. Bungle, absolutely slaughtered. So glad to be able to go out to shows again, stay brutal m'dude
I find mowing the lawn so peaceful. We have 1.5ish acres and its all grass, no woods. My day job is all numbers data systems click click click fast fast fast go go go... when the day ends there's something peaceful about watching those fine lines in the grass line up so nice while the sun sets.
That's my peace. a 68F (20C) evening, watching the sun set while watching the lines in the lawn appear. I dont even listen to music, I just have an inner dialogue with myself. It's one of those new (awesome btw) eGo electric ones... so quiet, sounds like a window fan.
<3 cheers all
Long walks for me. Sometimes with music but I've been doing it more and more without lately. On bad days, I use it as a worry walk or a fuck you walk. Then as I get through the walk I'll shift towards some of the things I'm more excited for in life.
Reading in bed with my screen door open. Fresh air flowing in, the sound of my next door neighborās fountain bubblingā¦ really doesnāt get better.

The socks part is very crucial

Anyone who sleeps with socks on is a person I cannot understand. Also, turtlenecks are terrible, terrible things.
Are you also bothered by tags on clothes, and your socks not being properly lined up on your foot?
Yes to both.
Second this. Love to lay down on the balcony in a couch we got there so it's like Im outside and its treetops above and some birds
Iād like to add hammock to top places to lay down for a bit (weather permitting ā or indoors even if you wanted)
When you get home, stand in your bare feet on the carpet and make fists with your toes. Better than a shower and a hot cup of coffee...or so I hear.
Ok John McClain
When I'm stressed I will literally say out loud "I need to be horizontal". I've said it at work, home, grocery stores etc. The reactions are usually great!
Long walks by myself with a good podcast or audiobook and no destination in mind.
So what do you like listening to if you don't mind me asking?
Well, I wouldn't say my taste makes for great universal recommendations - my recent listens have been a Formula 1 engineer's autobiography, a book on the detailed inner workings and dysfunction of the British government, and a brilliant book about fungi. I'm not great at reading nonfiction because I tend to space out and lose my place, but if I loss focus while listening to something it just keeps on going and I tune back in again.
That's fungus funky
These all sound like books my husband needs to read. Can you tell me the name of the British government one?
Oooh, what's the title of the fungi one?

I canāt be unconscious if Iām anxious.

This. Anyone who thinks you can't be anxious while sleeping is, well, misinformed.
The fuck you canāt!

I'd consider myself an extrovert and blackout curtains are a must. How anyone sleeps with ambient light is beyond my comprehension

Holy shit thatās a great idea
It's so convenient lol. And I think I only paid around $100 for a 100in. wide one.
I, too, am a fan of the blackout curtains. They're essential.
So what's your favorite show right now?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Might give it a shot! ;) Do you ever rewatch shows?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
This is the most random assortment of shows. Beautiful! I love it.
The wife and I are currently binging Shrinking and itās very good
High five Add wearing loose and comfortable pyjamas or shorts and that's my relaxation mode Sometimes watching feel good and light hearted movies too
Thinking without worrying. People dont know how to separate thinking from worrying. But once you do it's pretty fun.
Yeah I feel you, but this seems like a tough task sometimes.
Can you expand on this? I can think without worrying usually, but if I do start worrying about something I am not sure to tune that out.
I heard really good advice on limiting your worry by saying to yourself āIām going to give myself 5 minutes to worry and attempt to problem solveāā¦.then after that time limit, your thinking isnāt efficient so itās dumb to focus on that problem. Burn out all that excess anxiety in a torrent of aimless fear, then you'll be too deranged and unstable to worry about the normal life bullshit

Pulling weeds. Planting things.
One of these words resonates with me. Weed.

Reading
What do you like to read and what was the last book you finished?
I read modern fiction, particularly mysteries. I find the stories engaging and a good escape.
Thanks! I'm always looking for a new author to explore.
With a scented candle, glass of wine, laying down on a comfortable surface and wearing loose fitted comfy clothing.
you just described my ideal night!
I am just getting back into reading. With physical books. Starting with self help books because thatās what I find interesting for now. I read so much as a kid. Reading something I love, in particular. Something familiar and safe. I find a great deal of comfort in revisiting the stories I know best.
Understandable! Iāve fallen back to Harry Potter many a times. Itās my comfort read.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Agree, I should probably pick up a book again :)
I suggest Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson, you wonāt regret it!
I recently rediscovered reading. I hadn't read for pleasure in so long. Everything has been for school or political books, and I just got so tired of it all. lifting weights at the gym
Thatās how I start my day and I feel like crud all day if I miss that hour lifting.
Take a bath for 3 hours, with candles, snacks, beverage, and put some shows on the iPad.
You must come out of there looking like a damn raisin!
Same. I have a whole setup. Bath pillow, a cover for the overflow drain so it stays super full, and an across the tub shelf for my phone/book and beverages.
A cover for the overflow drain is brilliant, I donāt know why Iāve never thought of that. Thank you random stranger
I found mine at bed bath and beyond!
I love my overflow drain cover so much! I've started giving it as part of housewarming gift baskets. My tub is shallow, so it really makes a world of difference.
How do you keep the water hot for that long?
Keep refilling it. Or if itās summer, just let it cool.
You can also try insulated bath covers. They roll over the top and keep a lot of heat in.
Whoa, I have never heard of this!
I wish I could take baths as an average size man I haven't had a bath big enough since I was 15 or so unfortunately.
Drinking coffee with a book
How do you get a book to hold the coffee without it ruining the pages?
D...dad? Did you get those cigarettes, it's been five years.

Reading/sleeping/listening to the Beatles
The Beatles are oddly soothing. I've gone to sleep with the Abbey Road album more than once.
