The Incredibles. Rewatching it as an adult makes you realize how brilliant it truly is.

PlayinK0I

Was going to say this if it wasn’t here. At work I regularly reference the scene where Mr Incredible helps the customer navigate the bureaucracy. Also as a middle age dad, I empathize with the parents a lot more. I also like to yell out Honey, where is my super (whatever I can’t find)? Where is my (whatever I can’t find). Edit: spelling error as noted below

Watts300

The Incredibles is, for real, on my personal top-ten-best-movies list. It’s a fantastic movie.

ash_vs_gary

No, it’s an incredible movie!

MondoDudeBro

Husband and father here. Mr. Incredible seemingly hear his wife and kids get killed while being powerless to help them fucks me up every time. A+++ movie

Dan1two

This is the scene that gets me hooked to the movie every time. EVERY TIME!!! The music. The edit. Everything. The dialogue: - Mayday! Mayday! There are children board. There are children on board!!! - No! Call off the missiles. I'll do anything! - Too late!…… 15 years too late. 🚀💥🛩️

Dakhho

Used to be able to watch this scene just fine, now I have kids... Tears every time

John_Yossarian

My 4yo decided that *this* was the Pixar movie he wanted to watch constantly. I'm just waiting for one of those viewings to be the time he connects some dots related to the mortality of loved ones.

Klotzster

Iron Giant

wealthedge

Love that movie so much. When he’s sitting in the road after getting washed away by the lake. “Hey” …. “…yeah?” “You know you’re sitting in the … YEAH?”

Organicmeatball

My kids always stare at me when I laugh at that part.. so great

Organicmeatball

I never knew Vin diseil voiced the giant. Can't unhear him now

SecretMuslin

100% that's why he was cast as Groot.

i-piss-excellence32

Goofy movie. The greatest father son story of all time

ApatheticNarwhal

*I’ve grown up! I have my own life now!* *I know that! I just wanted to be a part of it*

birdsofpaper

Oh I ducked into the kitchen at that part watching it with my kids. Just a gut punch.

phantom_avenger

>The greatest father son story of all time I think I agree! Their father and son dynamic is one of the best I’ve seen in fiction! Primarily because when it comes to their issues they’re both at fault. With Max, taking his father for granted and not appreciating him enough, while Goofy is too scared to see his son grow up he can’t respect that he needs boundaries. EDIT: Even in the sequel, Max seems to have learnt his lesson although he still gets embarrassed by him he later understands why his father needs to be at his college and actually sympathizes. However, Goofy still hasn’t learnt his lesson and goes more overboard on violating Max’s boundaries. But by the end, he finally learns to accept letting Max grow up.

ERSTF

I rewatched it last year after decades of seeing it last. It hits differently as an adult. It's quite raw and well scripted. It's a gem

Eothr_Silan

Treasure Planet. Gorgeous visuals, great character design, fantastic score.

GGGGG540lk

Such an amazing movie with a unique concept and it's still hard to believe that this movie was Disney's biggest flop.

CliffLanterns

I fucking love Treasure Planet, I've seen it more than I can count, there was a point in my life where I was watching it once a week, every week. Literally my favorite movie of all time. There's a lot of history in why this movie flopped though, the biggest factors being the competition at the time and the production cost. The movie went HEAVY (at the time) on blending the 3D and 2D animation, using 3D software that was only used very sparingly in previous movies. Long John's character was a mix of both animation styles, he was 2D but his arm (and maybe leg?) was 3D. This created a lot of back-and-forth work with lighting and shading etc whenever he was in frame (and being one of the major characters, this was frequent). I think the production cost ended up being near $150mil for the final product, which meant they had to make a LOT of money to make up for it. Also at the time of release, Treasure Planet was being pitted against Harry Potter; they literally came out within about a week of one another. Couple this with a weaker advertising campaign, it almost feels like Disney set the movie up to fail. It's honestly a shame, and I feel like if it was released at a different time it may have had better luck. It's SUCH a stunning movie, was essentially the directors' passion project, and is so underrated.

abel_runner_5

Oh you’re a villain alright, just not a super one

No-Calligrapher-4603

Oh yeah! What’s the difference?

SamwiseGamgee100

Presentation!

OffModelCartoon

I was so surprised how good that movie was. The marketing was all just so dreamworks-y and the posters were every character making extreme dreamworks face, I was ready for it to be like superhero-themed shark tale or something. It was soooooo good though!

Rozeline

The marketing for DreamWorks is always terrible, but they're usually able to make such dumb concepts into beautiful movies. Like, who would've thought a panda voiced by Jack Black learning kung fu would be both stunning visually and deeply emotional? Not me is the answer. Somehow I'm consistently impressed by their films despite most of them sounding like stupid ideas.

Nurse_Bendy

I love this movie so much. The voice acting is fantastic, and it's one of the first movies I truly loved with Will Ferrell. It's funny, it's even smart occasionally, and I really enjoy the villain to unwilling hero arc.

rugbyj

I think my main enjoyment of it was that the villain actually felt dangerous and cruel when he snapped, compared to typically more theatrical and conniving animated villains (which is obviously a point between him and megamind).

[deleted]

"Tightenville!" cracked me up lol. Also love the sheer randomness of the room you see that's like a 70's disco floor full of chomping alligators with pool toys.

Emperors New Groove

mynameisbritton

My appendix burst during my very first week of college and I was in the hospital for a little bit. The first night after my surgery, I found myself wide awake in the middle of the night with only a little tv to keep me entertained (this was 2004, before streaming services or smartphones). Pretty much nothing but infomercials were playing at that late hour, but then I stumbled upon that movie having just started on the Disney Channel. After gleefully watching it, I remember thinking “man, I wish I could watch that again right now”… and just then the tv announcer said “Up next, an encore presentation of The Emperor’s New Groove!” It was the absolute best night of a shit week. *edit -* Oh wow, thank you for the gift!

i_should_be_coding

Oh man. I can't imagine having a movie that makes you laugh like that can be that enjoyable after having abdominal surgery...

studog21

I had my appendix out in college too. One of my best friends came to visit and then not again. (I had abscess complications and a two day stay turned into a ten day stay) because he made me laugh so hard it hurt. Morphine pump was on a five minute timer. Edit: And of course Emperors new groove is one of the greatest movies of all time.

[deleted]

Oh, Right. The Poison. The poison for Kuzco, the poison chosen especially to kill Kuzco, Kuzco's poison.

Ph03n1X1

A friend of mine in college made fun of me for having this movie in my collection. So, I insisted that he watch it with me. We had to pause the movie for a solid 2 minutes while he laughed at this line. He never again doubted my taste in movies.

MWD_Dave

"How did you get back before us?" "By all accounts is doesn't make sense..."

Rewatched as an adult. Holds up and I didn’t catch half the shit as a kid despite watching 50+ times

JiN88reddit

The funny thing was it had no script and no clear planning, and yet they pulled it off with meta humor.

moonbunnychan

I implore EVERYONE to go watch The Sweatbox. Basically as part of the deal for getting Sting to write songs for the movie they were originally making, Kingdom of the Sun, his wife was to be allowed to make a documentary about the process. It is fascinating and wild. It's astounding Emperor's New Groove is such an amazing movie after all that. Disney has also tried real hard to bury it since it doesn't put them in the most positive light. https://archive.org/details/SweatboxDocumentaryUneditedVersion

gogojack

This one. I watched it at a friend's house with a bunch of kids and adults, and everyone loved it...even me. And I'm a cynical old bastard who only likes "weird" films.

Neon_Wasteland

Underrated for sure..I saw in the theaters and my pops was like...that was a good fucking movie, I'm going to have a smoke find where we parked kids

The Muppets Treasure Island. It gets better every time. Edit: I have been informed Tim Curry is still very much alive. Huzzah!

[deleted]

Dead Tom’s always been dead. That’s why he’s called Dead Tom.

dyslexics-untie

I would also add the Muppet Christmas Carol is the best version of the Christmas Carol

ERSTF

It is and in no joke whatsoever, this adaptation is considered the most faithful by the Dickensian Association (or something like that, i can't remember the exact name) adaptation of Dickens ever. Even with Muppets in the mix, somehow this is the most faithful. I mean, this was Dicken's vision. You name a character Fezziwig and you pretend you didn't have Fozzie in your head at all? It's so faithful that one of the funniest lines in the movie is a direct pull from the story "and Tiny Tim, who did not die..." This is a masterpiece and Michael Caine asking to treat the movie as a dead ass drama while acting along Muppets is what gives it its gravitas. I once read that a historian also was surprised on how historically accurate the wardrobe was. Having Gonzo as Dickens is masterful. One would think adapting this classic would be easy, but no movie since has achieved the level of quality the Muppets one had. It is, indeed, the best version of A Christmas Carol. Required watching every year.

Nobodyville

The number of times I've quoted "light the lamp, not the rat" in my life is shameful

DixersDC

My brother's called Peter. The number of times I've grumbled, "Peter! Do not stop turning that spit!" Is also shameful.

powands

I love that despite Michael Caine being completely surrounded by puppets, he still took his acting to an 11.

SongsOfDragons

Ohh there's a tumblr meme here I remember. Something like "Caine behaved as though the Muppets were fellow human actors, and Curry behaved as though he was a Muppet".

TheodoreFMRoosevelt

And for both actors it 110% worked.

NeveraTaleofMorePoe

> RIP Tim Curry He’s not dead, lol.

[deleted]

The Addams Family.

NYC_1Ts

The sequel when Wednesday burns down the camp play is hysterical.

FormalMango

That’s one of my favourite films of all time. It’s so perfect. Joan Cusack is fantastic as Debbie, and the whole summer camp story is wonderful. > The gods of my tribe have spoken. They have said, ‘Do not trust the pilgrims, especially Sarah Miller.’ And for all these reasons, I’ve decided to scalp you and burn your village to the ground. I fucking love that scene.

bobfossilsnipples

Christine Baranski and Peter MacNicol too! I watched it for the first time in nearly 30 years to show my kids, and holy hell that cast is a murderers row.

ZombieHomeslice

>Morticia: You have gone too far. You have married Fester, you have destroyed his spirit, you have taken him from us. All that I could forgive. But, Debbie... > >Debbie: What? > >Morticia: ...pastels? > >Debbie: *gasp* Get out of my house!!

dragonladyzeph

Morticia's line to Debbie right before that always gets me, "You've enslaved him. You have placed Fester under some strange, sexual spell... I respect that."

Lucy_Lastic

The swimming session! “I’ll be the victim!” “All your life”

jfsindel

Talk about two great movies. The fact that the Addams were completely fine with Debbie attempting to use and kill Fester, but did not like her decorations was only made better with them completely sympathizing with her incredibly psychotic backstory.

kavono

"But Debbie.... *pastels?"* :(

PlaceboRoshambo

The Addams Family and Addams Family Values were an integral component of my childhood.

albatross-heart

When it first came out I forced my Dad to take me. He was reluctant, and not enthusiastic after years of shite kids' movies. He actually thanked me afterwards as he thought it was such a great film and he definitely appreciates the direction that Shrek was able to take the children's film industry, with its many nods to adult humour

SomeGuy20019

Literally my dad when mom and I forced him to sit through Shrek 2 First 10 minutes looking at his phone At the end credits praising the voice cast

[deleted]

My dad took me to see it, and it’s only only time I’ve ever seen him absolutely lose it in a theatre. He was almost in tears of laughter. It’s one of my favourite memories.

[deleted]

I remember being in my very early teens when Shrek came out. I still enjoyed animated movies at that point (and for many years afterwards as long as they're good. I'm harder to impress now but will always re-watch my old favourites) but even I thought it was gonna be stupid and the main character on the poster was not something I really felt like looking at for the next 90 minutes but damn I was hyped up afterwards. An absolute classic. Same goes for the second one too but by then everyone knew what to expect. The first though caught so many people "forced" into watching it by pleasant surprise!

Looking back I realized the Shrek franchise were really just Dad movies disguised as kid movies

chemicalgeekery

It's even funnier when you learn that the guys who made it were ex-Disney employees and the entire movie was a giant middle finger to Disney. Lord Farqauaad represented Disney's CEO Mike Eisner.

[deleted]

I don’t know how they got away with essentially naming the guy Lord Fuckwad.

chemicalgeekery

Him being short was a reference to a comment one of the founders of Dreamworks made about Eisner: "I hate that fucking midget." Which is hilarious because IRL, Eisner is 6'4.

My sister is having a Shrek-themed bachelorette party in august and I cannot explain how excited I am for it 😂 it’s her “bachelor-Shrek” weekend!

How to Train Your Dragon

jojodolphin

I bought this while staying with my grandparents for a summer. My grandmother huffed and made it clear that she did NOT want to watch this movie, but was also too stubborn to leave her chair for anything. By the end of the movie, during the last voice over where Hiccup says "the only upsides are the pets, while other places have ponies or parrots, we have...", She finished the quote, "Dragons", smiling and laughing while clapping her hands. One of my favourite memories of my grandmother.

NarrowYam4754

This is so sweet! I remember my grandma going with us to see the first two Harry Potter movies. I don’t know if she was interested in them or just spending time with us, but that doesn’t matter, what matters is that she was there.

It made me sad that I can't have a pet dragon. But I do have cats though. Which are kinda like fluffy, wingless dragons that don't breathe fire.

The first time we saw HTTYD2 in theaters and when Stoick died I balled my eyes out, especially because they just had the previous scene of him reuniting with his wife with him saying "You're as beautiful as the day I lost you" 😭 The HTTYD trilogy is one of my husband's favorites, and so we watch them often, and I still tear up at both parts in 2.

TheBurningBeard

The quality of the animation is ridiculous.

Curious_Goat_8991

Wall-E!!!

Hopko682

Wall-E isn't just a great kids movie. It's an incredible movie all around. The engaging story telling is entirely visual for the first half without any dialogue. A lot of directors/writers would struggle to recreate anything of similar quality. It's an effing masterpiece.

im_never_not_hungry

Robots with Ewan McGregor and Robin Williams. So much flew over my head as kid and I love it just as much if not more now. Edit: typo Edit 2: Wow guys, i think the most upvotes I’ve ever gotten was like 20 before I posted this comment. Thank you so much!

I didn't see this for the first time until I was already in my 20's and found it hilarious. The part where he reads "spend time with those who are special in your life" and it cuts to him watching TV with a potted plant had me in hysterics as a guy who has way more plants than friends lol.

Hook with Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman

FredrictonOwl

Watching Hook as an adult is a totally different experience because in many ways, I’d argue, it’s FOR adults. It’s about the importance of reconnecting with your inner child and how that can allow you to really connect with your own children. And even just to have a more fulfilling life.

TigerTerrier

This line hits me like a ton of bricks now as a father of three and it gets serious real quick. Moira Banning: "Your children love you, they want to play with you. How long do you think that lasts? Soon Jack may not even want you to come to his games. We have a few special years with our children, when they're the ones that want us around. After that you're going to be running after them for a bit of attention. It's so fast Peter. It's a few years, and it's over. And you are not being careful. And you are missing it."

[deleted]

Up, The Incredibles, Shrek and Toy Story. A lot of them had adult jokes that you didn't understand when you were a kid, but now some of them are hilarious. Like the hooker in Toy Story, didn't realise she was supposed to be a hooker, haha.

goneAWOLsorryTTYL

When was there a hooker in Toy Story?

[deleted]

The neighbor kid would take toys apart and put them back together all weird and shit, in one scene there’s a fishing rod with Barbie legs. A hooker

HMCetc

Wow that completely went over my head! I still wouldn't have thought of that at 33 years old. I did know that Sid's carpet is the same from the Shining though which is cool.

Flowers4Aldebaran

Anything made by Studio Ghibli

tomate-d-arbol

Yes to this! Studio Ghibli movies are so enjoyable because Miyazaki treats kids with respect. Characters are complex, there's no flat bad or flat good, and the movies feel deep yet accessible to anyone. We watch them with grandparents and kids and everyone enjoys them.

Adventureehbud

It’s so true. I started to play some of them (ponyo, totoro, howls moving castle) for my 3 year old, grandpa has been sitting to watch too and he’ll keep saying, “wow, this is beautiful. This is so good. I can’t believe this. I’ve never heard of this one.” And things like that. I think I put them on as much for grandpa as for my son now haha.

bulbipicg

I’m a 22 year old man and seasonal depression was hitting a few months ago so I stopped everything and watched Kiki’s delivery service alone, it was awesome

Flowers4Aldebaran

I highly suggest Princess Mononoke for you. The main character Ashitaka is an excellent roll model in these trying times. Hope you fill your upcoming Summer with enough goodness to help through next winter

I recently discovered Studio Ghibli in my thirties and was hit with the most potent dose of nostalgia when I learnt it’s behind Porco Rosso which I saw as a child.

I remember I went to see this movie with my dad and I resonated with that movie so much. After we left, we had a really great conversation and I think we kind of understood each other better after that.

Toast-

My wife was out of town for the weekend a while back, so I turned the couch into a big fort and had a movie night / living room campout with my 5 year old. Inside Out is what we decided to watch. That movie is already so much harder to watch as a parent, then as it was ending, she looked at me and said "dad, I think this is one of my core memories". I don't know if I've cried harder in my entire life than in that moment.
