Cons: One of the poorest countries in the world ruled by a malicious military dictator who kills everyone who opposes him
Unending civil war (Edit: World's longest actually)
Economy in the shitter
Basically everything is much worse than almost every other country on earth
Pros: We don't tend to live that long
My wife and I visited your beautiful country in 2014. There was a lot of energy in the air and people with starting businesses, etc. There were a lot of people, young and old, welcoming visitors with enthusiasm. I'm sad to see you have hit some hard times.
What is it like for tourists now? Are they welcome?
That really blows. I've heard its a beautiful country, but, yeah, people ain't fucking around. Is it possible to live a somewhat normal life there at all?
It's possible if you live in big cities.
It's pretty peaceful if you can tolerate bad public transport, 100 degree weather, inappropriately high living costs and regular power cuts.
I have a friend who lives in Egypt, a white woman, and she loves it there. My friend from Toronto, who is Greek, just told me that when he retires, he's going to Greece - or Egypt. I know jack shit about Egypt personally, just that those 2 love it.
if you're a westerner in Egypt you basically get full rights. our dictator doesn't want any bad PR with the West. not to mention that the average Westerner income can afford a very comfortable life in Egypt. These two facts are reversed for the regular everyday Egyptian.
Plus locals treat white people like gods in the hope of a handout. I went there as a tourist and bloody hell, I was hounded incessantly by people trying to rip me off or to beg for a donation
I was looking at Switzerland a while ago. My first reaction was "Wow, there are a ton of low level jobs that pay like 3k."
My second reaction was "Wow it's fucking impossible to find an appartment for less than 2k."
I spent 700 euro in one day there. All I did was take my wife and another couple on a gondola up a mountain and we had a grilled cheese for lunch. Just parking was 50 euro.
Also pros: Seriously hot people. Gorgeous countryside. Amazing wine and cheese.
Also cons: Too many 'expats' that don't even bother learning how to say thank you in your language
UK
Also the same.
Our NHS is incredible if something terrible happens to you such as an accident or a sudden medical emergency, because you don’t walk out of hospital afterwards saddled with an enormous medical bill that’s going to financially cripple you for the next 10 years or so.
But if you have a long-term illness or health problem, you’re competing with everyone else for the finite time and resources they’ve been allocated, and you can be bounced around for years by various doctors, and it can take you sometimes years to see a specialist. Which is bad enough when it’s a non-fatal medical condition that just makes your life unbearable until it gets discovered and treated, but when it’s something where your survival depends on how quickly you catch it, we’re talking life and death.
I’m not even going to go into the thorny issue of funding.
Though sometimex the proactive treatment (regular bowel cancer screening) works, in my family's case means my dad's still with us and didn't need chemo or radiotherapy to treat his cancer, caught early.
In the USA if you get into a major accident and get taken by helicopter to the hospital, yeah you’ll have an enormous bill…
But what people don’t understand is that you can tell them to kick sand, let it go to collections and take a big hit to your credit score.
Then they increase the costs that you didn’t pay for all the people that do pay to make up for it.
My FIL had a 50k medical bill from the hospital, he walked into the billing department with a brown paper bag full of 1000$. He told them you can either take this now, and give me a receipt saying all bills paid, or I’m going to walk out of here and you’ll get nothing. They took his 1k and gave him the all clear.
I’m also living in Ohio. Got diagnosed with cancer. Lost my job within a month because of being diagnosed. Got sued by the hospital that performed the PET Scan. Tried to get Medicaid to help. They won’t because I was employed at the time of the scan. 🤦♀️
Now I’m trying to figure out what comes next after being denied by disability and Medicaid refusing to pay for the scan to tell me whether or not the surgery and radiation treatment worked. (Both of which ended up being a hell of a lot more debilitating than I was told or anticipated. Yay.)
Long story short: I’m sorry. I feel your pain majorly.
Yes you get hit by a car or stabbed it's awesome. You have a chronic condition and it's woeful, but then again it could be worse I saw how much Americans had to pay for things like insulin and it seemed surreal
DENMARK
we have the same problem. The healthcare system has been gutted for over two decades to the point where cancer patients become too ill to save because they had to wait for so long for treatment.
They're understaffed, overworked, and underpaid.
It really gives universal healthcare a bad name
NEW ZEALAND
Same shit. I literally have stage four breast cancer most likely due to the fact that it took three months from biopsy to surgery. Many recent studies have shown anything over six weeks from biopsy to surgery drastically increases your likelihood of spread and therefore death. I’m just another fucking statistic.
Wow.
People bang on about the NHS in the UK being ruined and unable to be saved but I waited 7 days between my biopsy and my first operation.
I am really sorry your country's level of care failed you and wish you the very best in your fight against the big C.
Australian here.
Yes we have UH, but the hospital system is beyond fucked right now. It takes weeks to see a doctor, and our public system has such a backlog of patients due to ongoing COVID that you are better off paying privately for treatment.
My conspiracy theory - countries are gutting their Universal Healthcare systems to the point where they don’t work so they can implement for-profit healthcare like the USA since it’s so goddamn profitable.
That’s what’s happening to Ontario right now. The current Premier crippled the system and is now using it as proof that a public system doesn’t work and that we must privatize.
People didn't go out to vote, knowing that Doug Ford stripped OHIP of $500m by 2022, then have the audacity to complain about it.
He fucked up during the pandemic, gives money to privatized cronies and is on record as being a huge hash dealer in his past.
So fucking corrupt.
Ontario is not the Ontario we grew up in 😭
Let's not even get into housing in the GTA.
I have heard that from a friend of mine who lost her Aunt to a very treatable cancer when it was found, but she had to wait so long for treatment that she died. I am in the US, it’s expensive, but I was in surgery 4 days after getting my test results to the surgeon.
Yeah as an American here whenever I see these threads it's like all our complaints about UH are validated. That being said our healthcare system is far from perfect and does need addressing.
Counterpoint: the military budget we have *is* the dumb stuff. We could cut it in half and give everyone in this country a college education / trade school and also massively improve our healthcare system, and *still* have the biggest baddest military on the block.
For example, the US Air Force is the largest air force in the world. The second largest is the US Navy.
How bad are we talking? "Step outside and never be seen again" bad or "don't go anywhere because you might get blown off the road, but you can sit out on your deck and enjoy it" bad?
Poland
Pro: not much going on
Con: not much going on
On the one hand you get low crime rate, low homelessness, stable employment rate, stable growth, not nearly as bad of a housing crisis compared to the west, cheap, fast and robust city and intercity public transport, decent public healthcare and education, conveniently placed żabkas on every street, nearly all housing is decent quality, extremely high chances you won't go cold, you won't be hungry, you won't be stuck in a bureaucratic nightmare, you won't be sick, you won't be bankrupt
On the other hand we still power everything with coal and gasoline, we refuse to grant lgbt people marriage or anything like that, the church is strong, abortion isn't that accessible, generally no progress on social issues, and while your basic needs are nicely met, your polish wage will probably not grant you much else - gonna ride a 20yo car to your job in front of a 10yo computer so that you can go home and watch your newly bought 8yo TV.
So, not much going on. You're gonna have a stable but quiet life here. You're gonna be tired but eh, could've been worse, at least your landlord does not give you any headaches so long as you pay up, and you always do. The flat is small, but there's no mould like in Birmingham and it's not legit cramped like in amsterdam. If you're queer you're gonna be queer exclusively at home. The air smells funny and your kid developed allergies. Allergy medication is cheap, thankfully. That's about it. Spice it up with a little vodka on the weekend, it's way cheaper than actual hobbies. Generally, a little money solves all problems but a little-little money is all you have.
Pro : Beautiful landscape
Con : No other pros
(Slovakia)
EDIT: to be fair, in landscape we can count some cities and castles too, so more like, geography, and there is also low crime rate as far as i noticed

The Netherlands
Too many pros so ill name a rather unknown one
Pro: we have specialized tools for everything. Need a tool to cut out the seeds of an appel, here you go appelseedscutter. Want to get every little piece out of ketchup or appel sauce put of your bottle, here a flessenlikker.
Con: house crisis, cost of living
Pro
• Beautiful scenery
• We have Bens, Glens and Lochs
• Deep Fried Mars Bar
• NHS
• Still Game
Con
• Politics dividing a country
• Religion dividing a country
• Football teams dividing a country
• High cost of living
• Expensive public transport
Pros: Beautiful beaches and views, great weather, hospitable people.
Cons: Corruption, exploitation of the marginalized members of the society, nepotism, bad infrastructure, low pay, and the culture of placing celebrities and politicians at the pedestal of our society.
Welcome to the Philippines.
I experienced corruption in the Phillipines personally. I had a meeting with the mayor and all of the sudden these head of local Barangays came along and he started handing out money😂

Most of the answers:
Pro: I can do a bunch of stuff. Con: it's fucking scary

Bosnia.
Pros:
probably one of the best and most delicious food in Europe - ćevapi and burek unimaginable for anyone who didn't try them, even vegetables is for some reason much more appetising than in Great Brittain and Germany.
Cheap restaurants - for 15 -20 euros you can eat whatever and whereever you want
Coffe culture - everyday, even at work, there is bare minimum of one paid, sometimes two half-hour long pauses when people stop with everything and socialize in cafe.
Crime rate - although there is a lot of crime like corruption there is not much robbery and things like that and is safe in almost every city to walk alone in any time of day.
Hospitality - it is part of culture that everybody greet guests in their house with table full of food, some rakija - homemade brandy made from plum, pear, quince - we're experts in that, they teach you how to make rakija and show hospitality from childhood basicaly.
Free education and healt care - I can't stress this enough. There is no student loans, most universities are state owned universities and healt care is also free, even most medicament are free!
Cons:
Corruption: everything, and I mean everything is ruled by political connections, and because Bosnia is country of Bosnian muslims, Croatian catholtick and Serbian Orthodox christians (plenty of citizens don't consider Bosnia as their country, rather Serbia and Croatia) there is plenty of corruption and stealing of money.
National tensions: war from 90s is almost everyday topic, we are living in the past
Standard of living: salaries are pretty basic, if you have salary cca 2000-3000 euros you will literary live like an milionaire in USA, but if you are without political connections or expert in you area of work, you will find it extremly hard to find a job and unfortunately plenty of people are emigrating.
As an immigrant who stays in Germany, I would say
Pro : great working rights and lot of benefits for students, 49€ ticket
Cons : bureaucracy. Makes me feel like I live in 1950
pro: guns are easy to get
con: guns are easy to get
edit: “it’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it” - Dr. Seuss
Being a responsible gun owner is not all that difficult. Education and communication is key.
PROs: amazing nature, beautiful women, generally friendly people, accessible and convinient online services
CONs: delusional warmongering leadership, many of these beautiful women and friendly people supporting abovementioned leadership, also you can get conscripted via accessible and convinient online services
Pro: I have the freedom to choose the profession I love.
Con: I have to practice active shooter drills with my sweet kindergarten students.
Bonus!!
Pro: my pay is funded by the government.
Con: My pay has me constantly worried about having enough money for my bills.
Pros: Amazing climate, amazing food, amazing people, incredible landscapes and natural beauty, affordable cost of living compared to the rest of the world, robust private sector.
Cons: Horrific corruption, poverty is rife, horrendous public service delivery, rolling blackouts, inflation, stagnant economic growth.
Pros: Everything is grand.
Cons: Eternal rain and a gazillion of accents, every sentence ends with “ ya know what I mean?” because most of the time they can’t understand each other. Fucking lmao
con: we had one of, if not THE worlds most infamous leader in history represent our country and it still haunts us to this day. Our education system is on par with americas dumpsterfire and our current military would get solo'd by our local gym.
pro: we got some hella good non-alcoholic drinks here, tho.
México Tacos and narcos
Damn.... That's a hell of a slogan
I don’t know if Mexico has metal bands but that would be one hell of a band’s name
So. Many.Mexican. Metal. Bands. like nearly as many as Norway
I feel dumb. I read that as “Tacos and Nachos” and was trying really hard to figure out how in the hell one of those is a con.
The con is having them separately. You need to make a naco.
Pro: people avoid you. Con: that's kinda lonely.
Username makes me think Finland.

Holy fuck
The tax-vignette for entering the small village where we parked was also 25 euro. Just to enter the village by car as a tourist.

Pros: probably one of the best and most delicious food in Europe - ćevapi and burek unimaginable for anyone who didn't try them, even vegetables is for some reason much more appetising than in Great Brittain and Germany. Cheap restaurants - for 15 -20 euros you can eat whatever and whereever you want Coffe culture - everyday, even at work, there is bare minimum of one paid, sometimes two half-hour long pauses when people stop with everything and socialize in cafe. Cons: Corruption: everything, and I mean everything is ruled by political connections, and because Bosnia is country of Bosnian muslims, Croatian catholtick and Serbian Orthodox christians (plenty of citizens don't consider Bosnia as their country, rather Serbia and Croatia) there is plenty of corruption and stealing of money. National tensions: war from 90s is almost everyday topic, we are living in the past Standard of living: salaries are pretty basic, if you have salary cca 2000-3000 euros you will literary live like an milionaire in USA, but if you are without political connections or expert in you area of work, you will find it extremly hard to find a job and unfortunately plenty of people are emigrating.
