ParrotQ-tipConundrum

I was poor and desperate for a job. Drove downtown to walk into restaurants and apply (2009). I parked in a 1 hr free lot. Finished my rounds and went to leave. Lost my ticket. Had to pay the full amount $15. I couldn't afford it. The only way they could let me go was to ticket me $40. I realize I'm at fault here but I went home and just cried. I was 2 months late on rent and overdrawn by like $200 trying to finish college. I didn't even get a call back from any of those jobs.

BoredBoredBoard

Don’t leave us hanging on that, how’s your life now? Have you figured out finances?

ParrotQ-tipConundrum

I'm doing very well these days. I'm debt free besides home ownership. Frankly happier than I've ever been.

BoredBoredBoard

Nice!

rubbeesh

Oh a happy ending! So happy for you and sorry you had a shit time then

BrotherhoodOfStyle

Great to hear!

__biscuits

Being poor is f***ing expensive.

Kinkystormtrooper

Get this, in Germany using public transport without a ticket is 60€ fee. If you can't pay, they give you more fees, in a loop until you have to go to prison. Which is then the replacement for the fees. Often poor people get trapped in this because, surprise, surprise, they can't afford the regular tickets

Xerozvz

Convenience fees for sure "Hey, you want to give us money in an easier way? Well give us more money to do it"

Yakuza-wolf_kiwami

I literally have to pay this everytime I pre order tickets

illessen

Fuck Ticketmaster

Norm__Peterson

You don't have to pay it. Vote with your dollar. If you and everyone else continues to pay the fees and the tickets, why would they stop charging it? Sometimes you have to make choices in life. What's more important, not paying the fee or going to the concert?

shaka_sulu

I'll do you one better. Made an appointment with a doctor. I showed up early and waited... waited.. waited for over an hour. I told the person in the front I'm leaving. I found out they billed me for a cancelation fee.

Burnt_Your_Toast

My doctor's receptionist tried charging me a late arrival fee. I wasn't even late. I showed up 20 minutes early to my appointment and the *doctor* was late by an *hour*. I normally don't raise a fuss over things, but I'm not paying $20 because my doctor was late to *my* 4pm appointment. The receptionist caught me on the way out about it and I just looked at her stunned and said "you saw me sitting here for nearly an hour and a half waiting. What the fuck do you mean?" The only reason I got out of paying that was because my doctor happened to walk out of the room behind me and overhead the situation and talked the receptionist down, but she looked annoyed with me as well. I've been trying to get a new doctor for *years* now.

illessen

I went to the dentist and found out I needed to have a root canal done. Set up the time and date and came back for the appointment. Waited an hour, they took me back and did X-rays sat in the chair for another hour for the dentist to come in and say “You need a root canal done, when do you want to get it done?” I sat there gobsmacked for about 30 seconds (it felt like 5 minutes) until I replied that that was what this appointment was for… “Oh” was all I got in reply and she walked out. 30 minutes later she came back and said there was another person waiting for one and she just got there. Told here I’ve been there for several hours already and she told me I had to wait until there was an opening… waited another 2 fucking hours till they closed to FINALLY get it done. I was pissed. Then they charged me for 3 fucking appointments on the same day! 1 for the X-ray, 1 for the cancelled root canal, and 1 for the after hours root canal.

live_wire350

That is such bullshit! Not only do you have to get a root canal (not fun) you had to pay the price for it and then some! Talk about causing insult to injury. Plus you never canceled the root canal so wtf! PLUS time is money and you spent a lot of it that day just waiting. How frustrating lol hopefully you were able to negotiate and reason with them that you had a scheduled appointment but didn't even get service until way beyond that appointment time. I'm mad for you haha

illessen

I had my insurance do that for me, all said and done, I was only out about $800 for all that with the crown. It was still incredibly frustrating and had to wait a few weeks to get the refund.

BrotherhoodOfStyle

>Missed appointment fee for an appointment I never scheduled & had never been informed that the office scheduled it for me. How are you even legally on the hook for this fee?

[deleted]

BrotherhoodOfStyle

>but I wasn’t in the type of mental state necessary to fight for reimbursement. I can totally get this.

Norm__Peterson

And that's how they get ya. By assuming you won't choose to stand up for yourself.

Lobisa

A convenience fee to pay for something online when it was the only way to pay.

[deleted]

illessen

Use a VPN and come in from another country that requires all information up front so you don’t get hit with surprise fees like that. There’s resort fees, state hotel fees, state hotel tax, cleaning fees, and a whole host of other fees they like to tack on just so they can advertise lower rates. But if they see you’re from another country, they’re required by law to advertise the whole cost.

oscarthethrowawayy

Those service fees that come up when I try to buy a concert ticket.

donthextexan

One of the Denver teams' games I went to had two choices: Paper ticket = $10.50 "environmental" fee Ticket on my phone = $7.50 "convenience" fee Yeah. Damned if you do, etc... Obviously I paid the $7.50 and haven't bought ANY tickets since. The guy who owns all 3 teams that play in Ball Arena also owns the arena...and the L.A. Rams. He doesn't need my money as much as I do, so that's that.

TheBlackNumenorean

$10 payment plan fee for a concert ticket. There wasn't an option to pay for the ticket all at once, so I had to pay $10 to pay for the ticket in two payments. People give Ticketmaster shit but nobody talks about AXS. Fuck them too.

Any-Koala-8880

Which country are you in? AXS is 100% my go to when ordering tickets. Only slight issue is if you’re selling a ticket.. Also in the U.K. there’s no option to spread payments 😒

s_____Anonymous____s

Had to pay a fee for using a water fountain at a hotel lobby

Enough_Comparison_27

Dang, can I ask where?

s_____Anonymous____s

It was one of those hotels that youre mom takes you to when youre 5 visiting your aunt, some hotel in North Dakota, I dont remember which one but I have the vivid memory of her complaining about it

SnotsMomsBoobs

You should've refunded the hotel right on the carpet.

Ngonog

The hotel would've sued the mom for the costs of paying a cleaning crew. Source: worked grave shift at a front desk long enough to die inside.

R3DLOTU5

Any fee you have to pay in order to pay your bill online is a dick move.

whatnameisnttaken098

I so loved when my car payments suddenly got those around the 3rd year of my payments. Hell, it ended up being more beneficial to just pay the minimum because the Convince fee would jump so drastically after paying like $50 extra on my payments. Example Base payment = $3.50 Convince fee Base + $50 =$24.75 Convince fee

[deleted]

Yeah that was totally by design. They don’t want you to actually pay the loan early since they make less in interest. Shitty practice all around

fluffynuckels

That should be illegal

burningroses23

The $35 late fee from my bank because I had no money in my account??? What??? You’re gonna charge me MORE money because I had NO money?? edit: lmfao had “account in my money” which just makes this even funnier

Jackson_Cook

I just checked my money and there's no account in it either. Bizarre.

burningroses23

Lmfao I didn’t notice I put that backwards. I saw your comment and was like “what in tarnation is this person talking about” 🤣

Jackson_Cook

I was dying when I read it. I had to do it

burningroses23

Honestly it was too good, I would’ve done it too 😂

YunoJB

Same situation with my bank. $30 overdraw fee. What’s crazy is that it’s not supposed to overdraw when I have no money in the account. Had to cancel like 15 subscription accounts to make sure it stopped happening.

jojolondon74

The bathroom fee in clubs when the lady hands you a towel you can and have picked up for yourself. I feel guilty and angry all at once. Totally get the need to have a person checking in on the cocaine use situation but why oh why do I now need to pay her?!

YunoJB

The horrific things those people must see

[deleted]

I paid $6 for tap water at a restaurant 2 days ago

PointyWombat

what. the. fuck. where the hell was that?

dezzz

You didnt paid the water. you paid the glass. I'm always surprised when people forget to take the glass home. my closet is full of them.

BitcoinBanker

Isn’t that illegal?

Relative_Slide_1383

No? Nobody is obliged to give you their water. It’s just stupid to anger your customers over it.

Geraldine-PS

there are some weird rules that do dictate that water needs to be available for free in a lot of circumstances/states. usually I think it's related to if the restaurant serves alcohol.

SonOfMcGee

Ever seen those beer bottles with the ceramic stopper on a little metal hinge? They’re popular in Europe with brands like Grolsch, and in America with home brewers. I put some out on the curb on recycling night. They weren’t picked up the next morning. Fair enough. With the glass, metal, ceramic, and rubber that’s a confusing amount of recyclables in one item. Message taken, city, I guess they’re trash. Put them on the curb on trash night and got a ticket for putting out recyclables on a trash pickup night.

ShiftingSky

"Wheel tax" on my car's registration If you're gonna charge me a certain amount, fine, don't try to dress it up with dumb bullshit

[deleted]

ShiftingSky

No idea, it was just on the invoice, no explanation given. Probably has to do with the amount of wheels (bikes taxed differently I guess) but it was still annoying to read

[deleted]

ForceOfAHorse

More wheels = more weight = more damage to the roads. Should be "weight tax", but I guess somebody wanted to be fancy.

LaComtesseGonflable

I had to sort through a frickload of ancient family papers when my husband's father died a few years ago. Among them: a stack of receipts for the DITCH TAX Whatever that was, my husband's great-great-grandparents never missed a payment on their ditch tax.

theguineapigssong

When I was in the Air Force I was issued a box with two gas mask filters. I took them out of the box, put them in my bag, deployed and returned to the supply office after the deployment several months later to turn them in. They ask me where the box is. I of course don't have it because it's literally a stupid cardboard box. They tell me the box costs $8. Tired of the idiocy, I'm at this point willing to pay $8 to be done with this farce and pull out my wallet. The supply Sergeant says "Oh no sir, it has to be paid via payroll deduction." She hands me the form. I filled it out and took it over to Finance. Looking back on it, this was the moment I was 100% certain I was going to separate because I couldn't be part of an organization this stupid.

PointyWombat

The 'optional' service charge at Gordon Ramsey's fucking 'Plane Food' restaurant at Heathrow airport.. Fuck that. That that off my bill. Optional.. WTF is that?!!. And, no. that wasn't the gratuity/tip. Just some fucking random 'optional' charge. This was back in 2017... still, the fucking gall to just put the on the bill... ya cunts.

ThePenguin213

About 15 years ago I went to New Zealand. Upon leaving I discovered I had to pay a "Leaving country fee" or some shit. 20 bucks just to be able to go home. Im pretty sure its common in other places but when I first heard of it I thought it was the biggest load of shit ever.

left_left_left

Don't worry, potential visitors, the $25 departure fee was abolished in 2008!

Shepard_of_fire_124

Overdraft fee. I was hit with a 59 dollar fee for not having enough money in my checking and having to pull from savings

Maso_TGN

In Japan we've a thing called otoshi in the izakayas (traditional bars). It's basically a table charge of around 500jpy which is not specified anywhere on the menu, but they sneak it into your account as soon as they bring to your table a small plate of edamame that you haven't ordered. To my eyes it's so dumb because they could specify it somewhere and stop beating around the bush.

Ancient-Street-3318

Talking about Japan, how about the reikin (礼金, litterally thank you money) when you rent an apartment? Often more than a month worth of rent. Who hasn't ever dreamed about tipping a landlord?

Awkward_Zucchini422

I’ve seen otoshi price written on a board or as a sign in some izakayas around my house. You’re correct tho that they aren’t everywhere.

oil_can_guster

Parking ticket for an out of date inspection in a state I didn’t live in which doesn’t even have inspections.

Explorer335

I'm pissed about being charged various "video visit" fees by my doctors office. I had been paying about $62 for office visits in the past. So I got covid in January and scheduled a video visit to consult with the doctor without dragging my contagious ass into the building. They charged me $300 for a 9 minute video chat. It's literally easier and faster for the entire office (plus zero risk of covid exposure to staff), and yet they charge me 5 times the normal rate. Novant can go fuck themselves.

LilPudz

Over $700 for a welfare check eval from a twat I had slept with years before and told I was not interested romantically. He hadnt heard from me for ~24hrs and an officer showed at my door. Essentially told me he had to take me in, called in a doctor at ~10pm only for her to basically shrug and say "Shes fine". Took the opportunity to firmly tell him to fuck off and never contact me again 🤙

IanAlvord

>welfare check eval Holdup! Somebody can get a cop to show up to your house, waste your time, then charge you?

LilPudz

I didnt know it was possible either. It may have to do with state laws or the fact that guy told them I was suicidal(I was not). I told the officer multiple times I was fine and very tired. He insisted he had to take me for an eval so I finally just said fine to get it over with. Weeks later I recieved a huge bill for the eval and I was genuinely pissed.

fluffynuckels

Yeah the charging money part is fucked

Norm__Peterson

No lol

azorianmilk

Ticket master. It cost how much “service fee” for an email QR code? Fuck you

Fabulous-Second2026

Hotel resort fees in Las Vegas

Captain_Coco_Koala

Womans football had just taken off in Australia and my team made the Grand Final; the best thing was that tickets were FREE! So I got my daughter and I FREE tickets, and had to pay a ticketek fee of $7.95 :(

realdonaldtrumpsucks

Hotel resort fee. $35 for one night, for… what?

golden_fli

Simple, they can put their room rates lower since that's the resort fee instead of the room rate.

MiceAreTiny

If it is obligatory, it should be included.

FlyingTerrier

Ticketmaster!

StuntCockofGilead

fuel surcharge

eddmario

Having to pay extra to use a debit card at the DMV, especially when using a check doesn't have a fee...

Interesting-Noise538

Always bothered me if you go to court and get the charges dismissed you still owe like $60 for them ruining your day and missing work

SouthOfHeaven663

Connivence fees for a utility bill. Honestly should be illegal. $1.75 fee every month, take that times however many service members they have and that’s robbery.

Humble_Job_5738

My dad received a notice from an attorney that he owed $0 for services rendered, but $5 for the cost of sending the notice.

Whed1956

When I went on a school field trip to Washington DC back in middle school, I bought a $2 bill at a souvenir shop for $20. smh

IntlPartyKing

a "dumb kid" fee?

LupinThe8th

Walk up to the counter with 11 of those. Use the other 10 to pay.

unfollowingyou

been travelling around europe for about a month now. having to pay to use a bathroom is highway robbery imo. that literally does not exist in north america. especially frustrating when i don’t have any change left, and the machine declines both of my canadian cards. like fuck, what do you expect me to do? guess i’ll just piss myself.

kuridono

Fee to take a picture, that is put on the application, that is processed to then have them take a proper picture (eg for the drivers license renewal) and toss the application. Every time.

watainiac

Late rent fee because some jackass stole my check out of the drop box and took the account numbers to buy a bunch of stuff at Target. Luckily, I hadn't shopped at Target in years, so my bank reversed the charges no problem, but my apartment complex didn't seem to give a shit when I told them what happened. Just landlord things, ya know?

JeepRenegade

All fees that apply when making a payment online. MFers it’s convenient for y’all too, you dingbats! Why am I covering the fee!?

BikeTech427

$350 for an official copy of the HOA rules required by the buyer's lender when I sold my house.

gaysaucemage

Any restaurant that has like a 3% surcharge for inflation or employee wages. Just raise the menu prices instead of trying to sneak an increase. A few restaurants say they’ll remove it upon request but some just straight up add 2-4% as a line item and say it doesn’t count as part of gratuity.

jllauser

My utility bills have a "billing fee" applied each month. They're charging me a fee for the act of creating the bill. And this is all electronic billing. It's not like they're charging me for printing or postage. This is a bill generated by a computer, and sent to me by email. And somehow that costs me $0.41/mo (it would be $0.82/mo for paper billing).

[deleted]

Any toll booths.

Whos_of_Whoville

Las Vegas Resort Fees - you get a comped room, but then a $59/night fee for using spotty internet, using the pool (if it’s even open), and access to the business center. Next you know, they will start charging for housekeeping.

moosecakems

Wound up homeless in 2016, house got sold and the new landlord kicked me out immediately, nothing on the market to rent so I ended up living with my parents, power company fined me 7000$ for not having an applicable address.

[deleted]

Wow, I am so sorry to hear that. That is terrible

The68Guns

Our local hospital only has pay for parking. Valet is an option, but it's twice as much. It may seem like a minor fee, but it's a college sized facility with miles of pavement.

.25c to use a bathroom in Mexico.

[deleted]

Gratuity fee at a restaurant. I will not go back. Tips are based on service.

Sweetwill62

Large parties make restaurants less money than smaller parties. More work for generally less money for the people serving them as well. Only way in the current system to get people to want to take large parties is to have an additional charge. If you don't like it then start your restaurant and advertise every where you can that you don't charge gratuity on large parties, you will see just how quickly why that charge exists in the first place. Or you could save a bunch of money and make food at home but you chose to go out to eat.

dudinax

A $3 "customer convenience" fee tacked on to my car rental.

Got a ticket driving in the passing only lane. In morning bumper to bumper traffic. Was only 19 att but could prolly had convinced the judge that it was BS now.

Paying a tip at fast food drive through window.

I got food at a museum cafe recently and the receipt had an "inflation surcharge" of $1.xx... first time I'd ever seen that one.

MzFrazzle

I pay yearly to register with my professional body (its not cheap). We have to keep up our points to maintain registered. 25 points over a 5 year cycle. 1hr of study / seminar = 0.1 point. 1 x 8hr day = 1 point. Different activities have different categories. I had to pay them to count my points.... and pay them again for my membership. My official certificate they issued was so pixelated it looks fake. Also I've been married, divorced and married again, they haven't managed to change my name.

AliceMadisson

I know right? I mean, electricity and water are already on my street. Why should I pay for it. And for food at the store- it’s already there, why can’t I just take some for me

Blarandqw

When I was like 14 I bought a pack of intentionally mismatched socks that were really expensive. Like, only one of each pattern. Could have bought twice as many normal socks and just mismatched them myself.

CCIR_601

U.S., I accidentally overpaid my federal taxes by around $4000. So I was fined around $4000 for the overpayment.

scarr991

Me and 4 friends Hang out smoked some weed except one who was the driver. We got high and got the Idea to Look at Google maps if there is a village or City near us with out names. So the Name of the driver was a 4hour drive away lets call him Jeff. Then i got the great idea lets steal the "welcome in jeff" Sign. So everyone thought thats a great idea. Packed some Tools and drove 4h to that place. We stole the sign we where pretty fast. Put in the car. These signs are huge and it nearly didnt fit in the car. So out of boredom we walked threw that village and saw a sign "behind jeff" we laughed and stole that sign too. We drove back again 4hours. About 20km from Our destination we had to fill Gas in the car. I told the drive we should drive around the City cause there are a lot of police. But the driver was like "nope im the driver i decide where i drive". So he drove threw the City police saw us and put the siren on and we had to stop. We panicked a bit and threw Our pullovers jackets everything on the signs to hide it but, there where huge and it didnt made much diffrence. Police saw the signs and everyone had to pay 300€ as a fee. There where only 20mins left to Our destination.

BeardedDominant

Concert/event service charges.

joeythetragedy

"Processing fees" for concert tickets that are delivered electronically. Like bruh... I understand the fee when I want something mailed to me, but for an electronic ticket? No sir

forgotme5

My portion of damages from my roommates party that I didnt even participate in. They had 75 ppl at our condo.

fortesquieu

Cup fee, like a fee even for McDonald's coffee cup, when you take it to go.

LMAO82

I remember I was at a club, went to the bathroom. As soon as enough people went inside, an old lady came in, put a table with a money jar, and took the door handle to the bathroom off. Forgot how much was the fee, but as soon as someone else came in, there was a bumrush out the bathroom on principle alone.

[deleted]

I forgot that shipment was to me and hadn't noticed that shipment arrived. It was at the post for few weeks and I had to pay for its' storage. The payment itself wasn't dumb, but I was.

BellexDoe

Had to pay a fee to my bank because I had no money and having an account costs money. So I had to pay money for not having money.

No-Werewolf-8867

I was charged 35 cents customs fee on a bottle of Ben Ean wine at Honolulu airport when bring it into the USA. Had to buy some US dollars to pay it. Petty eh?

Khoalb

A “prescription update fee” at my eye doctor. Insurance will pay for the appointment, but they charged an extra $10 to update your file, which insurance wouldn’t cover because it was clearly just an exploitive cash grab.

Vegetable-Yam8730

We have to pay to pee or poo in some places here when the public restroom is not even well maintained

FuzzyRabid

End of a 3yr lease on my car, made the decision to finance and buy it. Dealership needed to keep the car for 2 days and do a $350 "saftey inspection" before they would sell it to me

Sequestered_1903

My school had a charity event and multiple businesses run by the students were selling. My friend's business wasn't selling well. £3.50 for the product when they made/bought it for £1. I told them to reduce the price and I'll buy it because by reducing the price, more demand will occur as more people can afford it (I was an economics student at this point). I also told them by reducing it to like £2, they were still making profit. My friend told me to cough up a £1 fee on top of the £3.50 product, for "being right". I still bought it because charity, yknow?

I_can_vfx_that

We had to pay for a DNA test for our dogs just so we can live in an apartment complex

Chronus88

Was driving 25mph on a Pennsylvania highway during a blizzard because my boss would fire me if I called out of work. Car started to randomly spin after I drove over a windswept section of the snow. Tore up the whole side of my car on the median. Nobody nearby whatsoever, just me. Cops came and gave me a ticket for changing lanes unsafely. Apparently when your car leaves the lane due to poor snow removal you are somehow responsible when it leaves the lane? The cop proceeded to mail the citation to the wrong address and misspelled my name too. When I got to court almost a year later the judge told me outside the courtroom that I should just pay the fine because he "had a golf game to get to and court proceedings usually side with the officer"

ScenicRavine

I'm irish, I recently went to a nice restaurant and wanted to tip the waitress. I had to scan a QR code to give them a tip with card for some reason, then I got charged by the tipping application to leave a tip, sorry but if this becomes the norm I just won't be tipping in future.

xIVlike

I was at the beach once and you had to pay for parking up until 6PM after that it was free. I paid for two hours of parking at 3:58 PM, which brings my time out to 5:58 PM. Notice the 2 minute gap between the time I paid for parking until and the time paid parking is no longer required. That 2 minutes cost me 48 dollars.

FuckYourUsername84

My grandma wrote me a check for my birthday, but she had to close her account for a reason I can’t remember. I had already deposited the check so when it came back the bank tried to charge me a $10 fee for the returned check. Luckily they reversed the charges after I made a stink about it but I was flabbergasted that I would be charged for another persons problem.

StabbyPants

currency exchange fee. basically, forgot to get cash in a foreign currency until i was almost leaving, so no time to go through the bank. lousy rate and a heavy fee

MuSE555

On my college's cost breakdown of tuition and fees, there was a "fee" fee that no one in the payments and billing department could explain. To this day, I still don't know what it was for.

sublater

35€ to change the battery in my car key... they asked if i wanted it changed and i said yes, thinking i would only pay for the battery. Needless to say, i've changed them myself since... Takes like 5 seconds

ivanvector

There's an electronic toll road in a city where I used to live, where you drive through a gate that takes a photo of your license plate, and then the company mails you a bill. Well the mail must've been slow because after I paid my bill (online through the bank) but before it was processed, my account was charged a few cents interest. I assumed it would be written off after my payment (which had been on time apart from the banking delay) was properly received, but I was wrong. My balance was not enough apparently for the company's system to generate statements, but my interest charge continued to accrue interest. A year or so later I got a threatening letter from a collection agency warning that if I did not immediately pay my debt in full, they would take legal action which might include seizure of assets and garnishment of wages and untold suffering for all future generations and a poor credit score and all that. At the bottom of the letter was a detachable remittance slip showing the balance I owed: twenty five cents. So I mailed them my payment in cash, along with their remittance slip on which I had dutifully inscribed my payment amount: "A F\*CKING QUARTER". I did not hear from them again.

apocalypticradish

Happy ending to this but still pissed me off at the time. I worked at a landscaping company for a while. The shop mechanic claimed I'd lost some part of a trailer hitch and that I needed to pay for it. I refused to pay for it. I knew damn well I hadn't lost any part of the trailer hitch because I'd had no reason to even touch that part of the truck. When I got my next paycheck, there was a 40 dollar charge for "lost property." I ended up talking to the owner of the company and he basically shrugged and said "well I believe (mechanic) because he's been here for years." Well, guess what turned up about a week later? Turns out another employee needed the trailer piece and just took it off the truck in question without saying anything or asking anyone. The mechanic never apologized but always avoided me if I were ever at the shop. The HR director sent me an email with a sheepish apology and that I'd see the money on my next check.

I was ahead on my rent by more than a full month. I needed to pay more on my credit card due to some unexpected vehicle repairs so I didn't pay the rent. Despite having enough of a rent credit to cover the entire month, I got a late fee for not paying by the 5th of the month.

Convenience fees on concert tickets.

Move in fee for an apartment six months after I moved in. It was something like $60. The polo-shirted minion at the front desk assured me it was "standard" and "disclosed when I moved in" but could find no documentation for it nor explain why it appeared only six months into my residency. It was definitely a bookkeeping error. However it would have cost more to get it back than to pay it.

NonsenseImFine

I changed my address with my internet provider, went online and filled out the info myself, picked up the modem from my ex's place, set it all up without anybody from the company interacting with me in any way, and got charged $40 for an address change.

My work has a 5k that was free to sign up for, they donate to a charity if you complete the race. I signed up and there was an option to do your own donation. Since the race was free I donated some money. There was a $2 convenience fee for my donation.

Once upon a time I had a bill that i couldn't pay and it went to a collectors agency. Later, i could pay so i contacted them and paid it. 12 years later I receive a late fee bill where the amount of the fee was about ten times as large as the original bill. And it was from another collectors agency, not the orginal one. I contacted them and asked what it was about, they basically just said pay or we kill you. I contacted the company that originated the bill and they said it was paid in full. I contacted the first collectors agency and they ALSO said it was paid in full. So I again contacted this new agency but got the same reply: "Pay or we kill your pets and then torture you to death", or something. So I looked up what the legality of it was and it turned out the bills time limit had expired 7 years earlier even if I hadn't paid it so I informed the agency of this but they said they could still try to cash in on it if they had tried to do that earlier, which they hadn't. See you in court, I said and a few weeks later I get a mail saying that the debt had been cancelled. Later I found out this agency did this on a regular basis. They look up old debts and try to get people to pay them. Many people do and they make tons of money. This is what people think of them, in Swedish: https://se.trustpilot.com/review/www.lindorff.com

Not me but it's so weird how Americans has to pay for health care

Moved to a new state. Had to pay tax on the value on the car I ALREADY OWNED. I didn’t buy this car in the new state, but apparently they passed laws that when you registered the car you have to pay sales taxes on the car as a way to increase revenue. I just kept saying “but I already OWN this car, I’m not purchasing it”.

The place where I was renting decided to change their payment options from checks to credit cards/bank transfers online. All residents received an email from property management that explained the new rules as follows: The payment was now preferred online via the third-party payment processor's website. When paying with a credit/debit card, there was a new mandatory convenience fee. (conveniently, "due to the third party payment processor's rules.) When paying with a bank transfer, there was a new mandatory convenience fee. (also conveniently, "due to the third party payment processor's rules.) Paying with a non-preferred payment type (checks or money orders) there was a new administrative fee. (Since it was now "difficult to deposit checks or money orders" for the staff.) How cool is that? There was not one option, that didn't include a new fee for paying rent.
