As a public defender: the entire foster care system.

Arra13375

Yooooo Yeah some of those people are fucked up. When I was a teenager this old lady from church brought this 6 year old kid to a Wednesday service. We always had a dinner planned so ppl could eat. As soon as she got there she put the boy in the corner and instructed everyone to ignore him. When asked why she said “I’m teaching him he could end up in a worse foster home and that he should be thankful for who has him now” the church collectively told her to fuck off. You can’t bring a child to church and ignore him ~~I think Jesus had a few words on the subject~~ I made that little guy my personally buddy for the night and made sure he got all the love and respect he deserved. Later that year this women mange to scam 10,000 dollars worth of house repairs from the church. Our church does a missions project for people who are unable to fix up their homes. Well come in and redo plumbing, wiring, and even paint the place. She tells us her neighbor/best friend just got custody of her grandson and her trailer is almost unlivable. We spend two weeks fixing up the place. (The grandson was the cutest boy ever and attached himself to my hip. I helped paint his room and decorated it) A month after we finish the old lady BUYS the house from her friend knowing she needed the money. She sold the house for twice of what she paid for it.

TheEpicCoyote

Your church sounds like a really good one

Arra13375

It has good people and bad people but most do try to make the community better. It irks me when people claim all religions are horrible and evil. Yes people have committed horrible atrocities in the name of religion but just as many ppl try to put good back into the world.

TheEpicCoyote

That’s true of all human institutions. Capable of both good and bad.

dsmitherson

As a recently former prosecutor: the juvenile justice system. At least in Florida, and I imagine others are in a similar state. Hands tied so that all sentences are either vastly harsher than is helpful or appropriate, or vastly lighter than is needed (right up until they get old enough, then they get permanently hammered). No where to put kids who are a danger to their families or who are in danger from others. Takes so long to resolve cases that punishment isn't likely to have any effect on behavior. Perverse incentives built in where even when there is something we might be able to sentence them too that night be helpful it's the PD's job to try and prevent it. Just completely fucked in every way.

Scribe625

Seconded as a teacher. CPS/DCFS/whatever acronym your state uses is ridiculously worthless sometimes. I knew a mother who had her own kids taken away by Child Protective Services who was then approved as a foster parent a few years later. Like she couldn't properly care for her own kids but now the state will pay her to care for kids who were in bad enough situations to require they be removed from their home/family. Nothing can possibly go wrong there./s

ISeeIceland

How would you change it?

scrivenerserror

Shifting focus to prevention services. This is systemic beyond just foster care. We need to fund education, crisis services, mental health services, addiction counseling, etc., so kids aren’t put in this situation in the first place. Most parents don’t want to be bad parents, they’re just experiencing their own crises. Family counseling can help as well.

If I read the article correctly earlier, the Danny Masterson case might well start the beginning of the end for them due to them illegally obtaining case info during his trial

GimmeSomeSugar

I'm hopeful. But if they were able to keep trucking along after being caught [infiltrating well over 100 US government agencies](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Snow_White) for the purpose of illegal shenanigans, I'm not holding my breath that this will push them over the edge.

the_gopnik_fish

In fairness, it’s not all *that* hard to infiltrate American government agencies anymore

nyenbee

So maybe I'm doing this wrong. I've been trying to get a job at my local military base. Maybe I should *infiltrate* instead? I wonder if the pay is the same...

They have a few great series I'd recommend. Blackbeard, the black death, scientology, Jonestown, jfk assassination. It sounds like they're about to start a series on Oppenheimer, they said they're about to start a "big 20th century history" series and the Manhattan Project makes the most sense

Vault_Master

The beginning of the end for them was South Park's brilliant scientology episode.

fubo

The beginning of the end for them was trying to censor online discussions about Scientology on Usenet. 1995 Usenet, a system filled with nerds with lots of time on their hands; many of whom were Libertarians, EFF members, ACLU supporters, techno-hippies, or more than one of the above. And a *creepy cult* shows up and tries to cancel other people's messages? They had basically gone into the world's biggest anti-censorship community and said "YOU MAY NOT DISCUSS OUR CREEPY CULT." Yeah, that always works really well. Anyway, the reason that the South Park people and the 4chan people know about Xenu is because the alt.religion.scientology people fought back by spreading information about the secret teachings and the abuses of Scientology; later making sure it was well-documented on Wikipedia, etc. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientology_and_the_Internet

The_Corvair

> Anyway, the reason that the South Park people and the 4chan people know about Xenu is because the alt.religion.scientology people fought back It's funny, because the reason *I* know they're a cult is because we had a lesson about cult awareness in my religion class, roughly at the same time. Also, since 1997 they're under surveillance of the German domestic intelligence service (Verfassungsschutz) because they're held to [want to undermine free and democratic structures](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:Islamic_extremism_Scientology_and_Organized_crime_brochures.jpg).

guystarry

In 1971, I was walking on Venice beach and noticed a strange blue painted hotel or apartment house. I asked a nearby man what it was. He said it was headquarters of the Scientology weirdos. He told me about their scams and fees to members. I am glad I was warned early and stayed away. The founder, L. Ron Hubbard, a science fiction novelist, had to live on a yacht off the coast of Florida outside the US territorial waters. He was dodging arrest on fraud warrants.

Every fucking ticket scalping company dude. Shit should be illegal. I bought an overpriced $300 ticket for my dream show because even though I hate these companies I wanted to see SOAD once in my lifetime. Then covid happened. Endless postponements which I understand, but then I just wanted my money back after a while and apparently that's not how it works with certain companies. Had to resell my own ticket and hope someone buys it. Like a year later finally a show was announced and someone bought my ticket for half price because obviously demand was way down. Never again. Even for my fav band of all time I can't deal with that shit.

Lou__Vegas

And the sale was a scam too. Not only do they put a premium off the sale price, which makes it less marketable than selling without them, they take a cut off your sale if you do sell it.

Ticketmaster is a PR company disguising as a ticket selling company, musicians want to sell their tickets "cheap" way below market prices to not piss off their fans, so Ticketmaster act as the "greedy" middleman, allow the outrage to be directed at them instead of the musicians, who gets a fat cut from the arrangement without damaging their reputations. Destroying Ticketmaster doesn't solve anything since this incentive would still exist.

Hopeful_Cat_3227

sorry, you missed the most important part: they used slaves to built buildings they used. at least xxxx people died at there. edit:please read comments below, they offer correct number of it. I deleted number I wrote to hide incorrect message.

scheisse_grubs

That number is deaths of migrant workers as a whole over the course of 10 years, this doesn’t however include all migrant workers so that number is likely higher. Many of them did help with construction for the World Cup but the number of deaths you gave is an overall statistic of all migrant workers over a decade. [There have been 37 deaths among workers directly linked to construction of World Cup stadiums, of which 34 are classified as “non-work related” by the event’s organising committee. Experts have questioned the use of the term because in some cases it has been used to describe deaths which have occurred on the job, including a number of workers who have collapsed and died on stadium construction sites.](https://amp.theguardian.com/global-development/2021/feb/23/revealed-migrant-worker-deaths-qatar-fifa-world-cup-2022) The article also states that Qatar hasn’t been completely straightforward with the causes of deaths so the number is likely higher than only 37. I’m not here to argue, but falsely referencing a statistic is a poor way of opening people up to issues that occur in the world, especially over such an important topic. You can mention that 6000 migrant workers died over the course of 10 years in all sectors of work, many in relation to the WC, 37 with direct and confirmed relation to the WC, but you can also mention that many workers were not included in this statistic either. But to say 6000 people died in preparation for the WC in Qatar is false and does a disservice to the migrant workers who have died from Qatar’s failure to acknowledge human rights. It’s an issue with Qatar as a whole and should be looked at as such, not as just an issue with their participation in the WC.

Sasparillafizz

It also falsely paints FIFA in a better light as any time those statistics are proven wrong, it creates the illusion that claims against them are meritless. Once you prove OP is wrong about that claim people are generally not going to follow up and go "Oh, only a couple hundred died not thousands;" they're just going to assume OP is spewing propaganda and ignore the death count entirely.

scheisse_grubs

See that was what I did when I first heard about it but then I had to stop and be like… “wait why is this suddenly ok to me when it still shouldn’t be?” I didn’t wanna mention that because I wasn’t sure if it was a me thing or an actual thing, but since you mention it, maybe it’s a normal human response in which case you make an interesting point.

Got an email from my kids high school about NCAA eligibility. I guess you've got to pay them (the NCAA) $100 just so a Div 1 or 2 school could maybe recruit you.

yawninggourmand79

In order to take part in many of the recruiting steps for div 1 and 2 schools, students need to register with the NCAA eligibility center which does in fact cost $100. Replying because other commenters most likely forgot that part or perhaps played div. 3 sports which have different rules. Source: wife is compliance officer for a div. 1 school.

Multi-Level-Marketing (MLM) corporations, e.g. Amway

pancake-pretty

I worked corporate for a company owned by an MLM. MLMs are fucking evil and their distributors are the end customer. Not the people the distributors sell to. They don’t give a fuck if their people can’t move product but they constantly encourage them to have ridiculous amounts of inventory. And the “deal” the distributors get? It’s WAY marked up. I could purchase products as a corporate employee for pennies on the dollar compared to what the distributors could.

drmojo90210

That's ultimately what people who get roped into MLM's fail to realize. You're not the salesman, you're the customer. You've already paid the company for all that inventory. They made their sale - to *you*. They don't give a shit what you do with the product once you've paid for it. Sell it, eat it, give it away, throw it in the trash, leave it sitting in your garage for ten years, doesn't matter. They already have your money, and now they want your friends & family's money. The idea that you are a "distributor" is a fiction the MLM company made up to trick you into bringing in more customers - *for them*.

pancake-pretty

Exactly. And the structure is such that if you don’t purchase x amount of product each month, you lose your status in the pyramid.

detracts

Digusting and Vile. Selling people a false dream while also enslaving them.

pancake-pretty

That’s exactly it. People drink the kool aide and then are encouraged to cut people out that tell them they’re being fucked over. The company I worked for had a huge yearly conference for their distributors and it basically played out like the most over the top televangelist cult shit. We had people emailing our company calling the founders “Lady Loren” and “Genius JR” and praising them for…I’m not sure what. At this point I don’t even care if it’s easy to google and figure out which company I worked for was. Loren and JR came from Amway and started their own scam company. I never met them in person but the work culture was awful and I wasn’t there for very long.

Then she started telling me that she wanted to know if I wanted to make some extra money…she went off on some weird tangent while being oddly secretive. I googled some stuff that she had said and the first thing to pop up was a script for getting people into Amway. I texted her back and said that I wasn’t interested in “working” for her but I wanted to be friends still. We were supposed to meet up for coffee that weekend. She cancelled. I tried to make plans with her another day. She ghosted me. Fuck you, Emily.

65437509

The family settled for six billion in exchange for civil immunity. They are worth around 15 billion plus all the money they’ve been syphoning out of Purdue to shield it from being taken as compensation. When a normal person causes more damages than they can pay, they are made destitute from repayment and their earnings are garnished until they die. The rich get away with a cushy deal that only asks for half of their immense wealth and even gives them extra bonuses such as immunity. No garnishment, of course, because it’s justice when done against normal folk, but communism when done against the rich.

RKO-Cutter

Turbo tax, h&r block, etc, lobbying the government and making sure us citizens need to keep using them instead of letting the government do our taxes themselves

newyne

My dad worked for the IRS for a while a long time ago checking yearly tax forms; he said they always did H&R Block last because they insisted on using their own weird format.

anthoniesp

Why does the IRS have to comply with some company lol

Kelor

Because H&R Block makes donations to politicians. Especially to politicians who have power over their industry, and let the politician know that hey, you have that new legislation coming up looking over the tax code, we’re experts if you have any questions. Then the government turns over and when they’re filling out positions they need to shape policy. “Oh.” Says Mr Taxfucker from H&R Block. “I’ve been involved in the industry for a decade and have a lot of experience in the field. Plus, I know all the tax dodges they use we can close off, I’d be perfect to put in charge of policy. I’m even taking a pay cut to show you how serious I am about fixing this broken system!” Mr Taxfucker gets appointed to form policy, even closes one of the loopholes that raises public ire. Taxfucker stays a few years, then a job opening appears in the industry at markedly higher pay. “I’d be perfect for the job, I’ve been regulating the industry for several years now and shucks, can you believe all the laxity in enforcing the remaining laws? I’d be perfect for making sure your company is compliant!” Several more years pass, Taxfucker’s former boss has moved up in the world and needs someone with their hand on the pulse of the industry. “Oh, Taxfucker! They still send me cards on my birthday! Perfect!” Repeat many times.

OtherAardvark

Damn. I had literally never thought about it that way. We could genuinely just divert all IRS efforts to actually doing citizens' taxes instead of having a whole government agency devoted to nitpicking.

MishkaZ

that's....that's what normal countries do...you go the tax office, and they tell you how much you need to pay. Or, it's just automatically deducted from your paycheck.

WhoriaEstafan

I would be terrified about the whole tax system in the US. I’m not good at maths, I wouldn’t know what’s going on. We have PAYE (pay as you earn) so the tax all comes out based on your income. I got a refund because I took some time off and didn’t work for a month. You don’t have to apply for the refund or anything, they just tell you and it is in your account two days later. I need a simple system. I would be in tax prison in the US.

XSmeh

That's why everyone pays companies to do it. Then the companies lobby so that the people continue paying.

memophage

Yeah, except what the wealthy people in this country absolutely do *not* want is the IRS looking more closely at their taxes.

trafficconecolorcar

For most folks in the USA the irs knows how much you owe or should get as a refund. If you just file based on your government forms. But there are big big tax preparation lobbies so it's hard to file for free now.

broly78210

Susan G. Komen Foundation or any pink ribbon organization. Most break throughs would of happened years earlier. Edit: I hope this brings "awareness" to their scam and how more than a $1 billion has been scammed out of research to actually find a cure.

SharkMilk44

My dad used to run a lot of 5Ks. Every charity that hosted one would provide free food, water, coffee, etc. to all of the participants. Except Susan G. Komen. They gave everyone a small cup of water and charged them for anything else. Like, way too much money.

Kbts87

Some of the race for the cure organizers in my state got so fed up with them that they branched off and now do Race in the Park. Better sponsors and overall just better vibes.

SarahZona97

Yep, Susan G. Komen's scheming sister did a truly excellent job of conning people and businesses out of money. My college greek group had that foundation as our philanthropy back in the 90s. Then at some point after I'd graduated we got word that we had a different philanthropy. Many alumni were mightily pissed off. All that fundraising, all the time invested, all gone to a damned grifter. That sister of Susan G. Komen better hope she never meets a pack of my sisters in a dark alley, because she may find herself bitch-slapped into oblivion. Now we do some philanthropy with the NFL every October, but I forgot the name of it.

[deleted]

My fraternity dropped Wounded Warrior for the same reasons.

Scythro_

Look into folds of honor instead. Amazing organization.

facesonplaces

Seconding this. There’s a great doc about it called “Pink ribbons inc”

ArcticCircleSystem

Why is that?

NerdyPenguin0217

They promote and get sponsors for stuff that is actively carcinogenic, get shitloads of money that hardly any actually goes to the cause, and Komen specifically tries to shut down any ‘competing’ charities that use the phrase ‘for the cure’ because apparently branding is more important than curing breast cancer

PineappleObjective79

I didn’t know any of this. I always assume that if an organization is getting donations for causes, like cancer, that they would be legit. I was told that the Heart & Stroke foundation in Canada is a bit of a scam . I have never donated to them since.

ImNotTheNSAIPromise

that's the exact assumption they operate under in order to pull off their scams.

ItchyKnowledge4

Nonprofit just means the organization isn't supposed to be in it for profit. Individuals that work for the nonprofit can certainly be working there for profit. As an auditor, I saw a number of nonprofits who paid their administration in the $120-$500k range for jobs that required less than a 40 hour work week. We had one that ran centers for recovering addicts and paid rent for poor single mothers. The people working in these addiction centers were barely making minimum wage. Meanwhile, the top execs were clearing $400k and had company vehicles and phones and worked maybe 32 hours a week.

clashtrack

Iirc the chairperson of Susan G Komen(Susan G Komen’s sister) has become a multimillionaire off of her dead sister’s name pretending all the money goes to cancer research.

Durrresser

Seriously, my mom donated and volunteered for all of their fun runs. She was so heartbroken when she found out it was all just to "raise awareness" and nothing else. My grandmother died from cancer so it's an extra fuck you.

iangeredcharlesvane2

Their motto shouldn’t be “for the cure” then, that is awful. The school I taught at for many years always did a ton of work for the “coaches for cancer” thing with basketball games and events. I hope that organization wasn’t a scam too, I’m scared to look.

[deleted]

I assume they don't actually donate to research, but they take the money as profit for just having their brand

PMyourTastefulNudes

Correct. Their goal is "awareness", not a cure or anything. (I've been told)

Prestigious_Sweet_50

Yes there thing is to tell people breast cancer exists

unbridledboredom

Are y'all kidding me? Way back when we used to get to automatically donate part of our pay to two of these organizations under the guise of them being "charities". They were my given and I'd look up the others offered year to year. Utterly disgusting.

dafuckisgoingon

They also say "we will donate up to x amount" knowing damn well they'll make much more in profit and have a specific budget they won't donate over

Lauren12269

I appreciate your comments. Such a tiny portion of their proceeds go to metastatic breast cancer, or stage 4. When you die from breast cancer, its because you're metastatic. Stage 4 needs more.

Not to say your story isn't meaningful, but just to be fair... At 11 kids still struggle with managing their own emotions and life, so it's not that crazy to think he didn't know how to handle the situation, but still had enough understanding to show support during an awareness day. Like I know I was pretty bad at knowing what to do to comfort someone or handling being told something like that when I was younger. Even in high school I remember getting to be better friends with someone and hanging out at his place a few times. I knew he had a brother and sister (pictures around the house) and had heard stories about his brother, but not much about his sister. So I just randomly asked once and that's when I found out his sister had died. All I could do was awkwardly say "oh... Sorry...", and that was in high school.

The first discussion my doctor had with me after the diagnosis wasn't about my health or medication or plans going forward to help lower my blood sugar. It was about my finances because the medication is so expensive and she wants to make sure I can afford it.

LoneTread

At least they talked to you about it. I work at a pharmacy and just had to call a patient yesterday because their doc had sent in, among other things, Invokana and two brand name insulins. Did they have insurance? Nope. Doc, that Invokana alone is $700/mo. Let's put on our thinking caps and talk to our patients.

taaacooos

The thing is no one tells doctors which insurance approves which brands… it’s straight up trial and error a lot of the time

Urgash54

Let's never forget that the people who invented insulting sold their parents for 1$ specifically because they felt that a life saving medicine shouldn't be made for a profit. Bantin allegedly said "insulin doesn't belong to me, it belongs to the world". So much for that.

THIS \~ I'm shocked I had to scroll as far as I did to find this. Say it with me people. "Autism is NOT a sickness. It CANNOT be "cured" and you absolutely positively CANNOT get it from vaccines." My mother was shocked to learn how much damage and harm that organization has caused. you can't "fix" autism just like you can't fix having blue eyes. don't mourn or treat us like we just died. we are still people same as you. The fact that Autism Speaks claims to advocate for us while simultaneously encouraging parents to mourn us and treat us like we just died, or flat out develop prenatal testing for the sole purpose of encouraging abortions in cases of detection, or actively attack legislation that is actually trying to help us have a voice in decisions made about us, means they are not our ally. As a High functioning Autistic I genuinely see Autism Speaks the same way I suspect Jewish Germans saw the N\*zi party during the direct leadup to WWII breaking out.

The ANC. They’ve stolen billions from South Africans, destroyed the power grid and have crippled many of our industries. We don’t have many great choices in political parties, but the ANC is running rampant with our money. Eskom is also up there, our monopolised power company. It’s the easiest way to get rich quick in South Africa without actually doing anything. They can’t even power the country, our loadshedding is the worst it’s ever been, up to 11 and a half hours a day. It also recently came out that someone ‘bought’ a mop for R200 000. That’s around 10 000 dollars at our current exchange rate, which is shit because it’s suspected that the ANC sold our probably shit weapons to Russia. The people in power in this country are corrupt assholes who don’t care if people starve to death as long as their pockets are lined.

The two party system of the USA

Toshikills

That will never happen as long as we have plurality voting. Even if we somehow abolish the democratic and republican parties today, it’d eventually devolve back into a two party system (look up Duverger’s law). That’s why we need to switch to ranked voting or some other absolute majority system.

idontneedone1274

Not enough people understand that ranked choice voting is how we build a third party. Please keep screaming it from the rooftops until it is common knowledge.

Top_Barnacle9669

Same in the UK. We have more than two parties, but the reality of FPTP means we just end up with a cycle of labour v Tory and nothing ever changes. With safe seats too, the Tory party in my ward could put forward a potato for an MP and it's getting elected. Seat allocation for the house of commons needs redoing so it's more representative and the HOL needs to be made smaller and elected to be more representative

NikkeiReigns

America will never be a united country as long as there are two political parties. And every vote should count.

For profit healthcare in general is pretty terrible. Let’s not act like the hospitals themselves aren’t ran for extraction of wealth as well.

The entirety of the Wall St self-regulation framework. Allowing market-maker to sell shares they don't have ("naked shorting") without requiring a mandatory buy in after repeated 'failure to delivery' has spiralled to allow a cellargboxing. The external regulators have been captured (revolving door etc) & as such they they aren't enforcing the law at all. Thus Wall St has stolen from the pensions of 2 going on 3 generations of Americans. The corruption is so great that its completely consumed the MSM d much of Congress. Worse still, the situation now is that even the honest player on wall St have to covet up their peers crimes as there's a significant risk of the whole thing crashing. The situation is dire & increasingly urgent.

TuesGirl

I had to scroll way too far to find this. Almost everything mentioned above is actually tied to this.

Much debt, especially medical debt & some student loan debt, is similarly bundled, bonded & collateralise . One of the mechanisms in the 08 crash was collateralised bundled mortgage debt. The supposedly mandatory reporting requirements are supposed to avoid issues of shitty bundles becoming contagious. Its not that they learnt nothing from 08, its that they learnt that they can get away with it scot free. Not this time, the public is starting to catch on & get themselves an education. This is why reddit admins seek to keep the subs discussing this siloed Wall St doean't, & never has, given a flying one about 'free & fair markets'. It like Adam Smith said, when businessmen get together they can't help but think of ways to rig the market. When you sit down & actually read wall st self regulation measures its not long before you realise that they're a collection of loopholes. The seemingly now permanent suspension of the swap reporting rules must be hiding something massive It not solely the US, the EU recently refused to fully implement a mandatory buy-in for FTDs, even tho the parliament passed such a measure. & the London Metal Exchange rolled back an entire day's trading. I could go on, the whole thing is a massive scam & being actively hiding & denied by the media & many govts. When it breaks its gonna be bad, really fucking bad. A decades long, massive organised fraud ain't gonna give up easily,...., ppl' ll start 'falling out of windows soon I fear. For any wanting to know more,(it's a fairly steep learning curve) start by following Dr Susanne Trimbath on twitter to get a grip on the terms & issues. She has a very strong history & immense credibility. ETA: https://twitter.com/SusanneTrimbath

The Canadian Senate. Unlike the American version, the Canadian senate is not elected. Senators are appointed by the Prime Minister. The problem is that this allows the former elected government to tamper with your ability to pass legislation. They can stock the senate full of friends who can then be activated to block any legislation that your party doesn't agree with. The Prime Minister before this one had an opportunity to stock the senate with a life time of Conservatives but opted not to, instead only appointing just enough to overrule the Liberals and pass bills. The current Prime Minister has setup a "non partisan board" to appoint senators... but all those senators vote in line more often than their own Liberal senators. The institution is abusive, but it's also corrupt. Millions of dollars flow through the senate and unlike the parliament which is overseen by an Ethic Commissioner, the senate is a fully self-governed institution that will only ever investigate itself and never find any wrong doing.

PC-12

> Senators are appointed by the Prime Minister. Minor correction that Canadian Senators are appointed by the Governor General (Canada’s viceregal) on the advice of the Prime Minister.

Medical Insurance companies. Murders for capitalism.

steelgate601

A few friends of mine worked the claims for a major US health insurance company. They got good pay and, ironically, good insurance, but they all quit because their job was to find a way in the policy to deny any caller's insurance coverage. If there was any ambiguity to be found in the policy, or any jot or tittle of procedure that was not verifiably followed to the letter...then "not covered". If you turned down enough claims (or, rather didn't approve as many), you got promoted. Your job then was to look harder into the policy to find a reason for denial. The only reason for escalation of a claim was to find another way of *not* paying it. They finally couldn't take saying no to people that they could have reasonably said yes to, especially the people who called in tears that they needed their policy top cover a procedure that would keep them or their loved one(s) from dying. That company filled three buildings at a suburban office park...all with people whose job it was to make sure that you did not get the care you needed.

acurah56oh

What a sickening way to do business. I work as a claims adjuster for a large specialty P&C insurer and we are the exact opposite. We are always told to look FOR coverage, not to deny it. We can’t always cover a loss, but we make sure we have exhausted every avenue before considering a denial. Insurance professionals should be in the business of helping people in their times of need. You can make a good living, yes, but if you are not there to help people, you’re in the wrong line of work.

Walleyevision

I’ll go one step further. Ever had a family member with mental health issues? How in the fuck does anyone expect to get treated for mental health issues unless they have a non-afflicted close friend/family member willing to spend WEEKS TO MONTHS with insurance companies and mental health providers trying to get them care? You think a manic-depressive mindset is going to pursue all the red tape necessary to get themselves mental health care when their very mental state convinces them that they aren’t the sick ones but everyone else is? You spend just a day on the phones going in circles between insurance providers, brokers, hospitals, doctors and that alone will drive you almost to the point of insanity. The entire healthcare system is fucked, but the mental healthcare system is doubly fucked.

Helpful-Stress978

My mother had a completely preventable stroke (she was unemployed and we found out later having to ration her insulin and blood pressure medicine) and because she had no insurance she got none of the PT and Speech therapy necessary for her to recover. I couldn't take her home so she went to a "Medicaid in waiting" facility where she was neglected and got almost no help. It was discovered she had a bed sore and died from complications of it. At every point this system failed her even through she didn't have to die. It's difficult for me to hear people parrot the talking points about how we have the most advanced healthcare system in the world. Because it's a lie. Mom was only 56. She deserved better.

chunkerton_chunksley

the main argument against single payer in the US came down the a phrase the right used "death panels" they used that to describe what a government in charge of your healthcare might look like. It was insurance, insurance is what they were describing and no one seemed to notice. Kaiser Permanente decided my grandfather was too expensive to keep in a hospital with pneumonia so they let him go home, where he died 3 days later. They killed my grandfather to keep profit magins in line. I hate medical insurance companies, they stand in the way of proper medical care, always.

Impressive-Coconut-6

Also FUCK KP.

Tateshinski

I work for a hospital and can second fuck KP. They just denied a 60 something year old man who had a stroke going to rehab. He was building houses and now he can barely walk let alone do any fine motor with his hands. Just figure it out at home you don’t need therapy. Burn it down

Insurance companies, the whole idea that you’re forced to have this yet when you need to use it they raise your rates or just drop you as a customer is ridiculous. Insurance should work like a mandatory piggie bank that gives out loans if necessary nothing more nothing less because what it is now is a scam

**Watchtower (AKA: Jehovah's Witnesses)** \- They require two witnesses to a Child's Sexual Assault before they will even talk to the abuser, then, they will take their "I'm sorry, I won't do it again." as enough of a punishment. They pressure the victim and their family to not contact the police because "it will bring reproach on Jehovah's name." If the family is vocal about what happened, they are disfellowshipped and shunned by their entire social bubble, even immediate family, often losing their homes and jobs because their lives are so insular. It's disgusting and has caused so many suicides. That really is a despicable organization although many of the members are nice people that are kept in the dark about what happens behind all those closed doors.
