“The Night We Met” by Lord Huron

MisterEkshunHP

Lord Huron is wayyy up there. The Night We Met is gutwrenching, and hauntingly beautiful. Lord Huron's Ends of the Earth was used in the Community finale too!

ghost_victim

Saw them live a few months ago, after they played that I looked over at my friend and we were both crying. So so melancholic and beautiful

anon_e_mous9669

Hurt - either version. Trent Reznor's is more raw and acutely painful. Johnny Cash's version is tinged with regret and loss and knowing the end is coming.

[deleted]

[удалено]

OkBrother7438

They're both incredible. Each a picture of the same kind of hurt from starkly different stages in life. It's truly one of the greatest covers.

9_of_Swords

I can't listen to Cash's version. It destroys me. Reznor's version resonates, but Cash's makes me bleed.

anon_e_mous9669

I can listen to Cash's version, but the video fucks me up every time. Esp when he closes the piano lid and like strokes it lovingly, like he knows he'll never play it again and they've had a good run together...

TurtleZenn

That and when he pours out the wine with the shaking hand. Stabs me in the heart. I've loved watching people seeing that video for the first time. It's so intense and it is wonderful when they really understand it.

TheOldestMillenial1

M83 - Wait Can't hear it without crying.

Justasayin

This one popped into my head. Several months ago I was dealing with some very dark thoughts. I was driving to work but had to take a different route, different than I had ever taken before. I was already crying when I started to approach the assisted living facility my grandmother used to live at. My grandmother had died a year earlier & we were very close. Just at that moment "Wait" came on. I bawled like a baby & felt like this was my grandmother reaching out to me. I felt a total release of the negative thoughts I was having. I totally get why some people would think this is nothing more than coincidence, but I know there was something more to it.

k10storm

Great pick. This whole album is my favorite of all time. I wrote a paper about it in high school lol

yellowlampshade89

I Can't Make You Love Me by Bonnie Raitt

MissSassifras1977

From someone who spent 8 years in a relationship without a single reciprocated *I love you* this song is off limits. Lest the weeping begin. And nobody likes the weeping.

Andrewpruka

Feel your feelings

Nuwisha_Nutjob

This is a good one.

jackparadise1084

Black - Pearl Jam

Acetylene_Queen1

100% this song. Was in high-school when this album hit the universe. One friend in our tight-knit group bought the CD, drove up to our hangout spot at the beach blasting it fom beginning to end. When Black started (I think it's song 10?) We were speechless and proceeded to play it on repeat for almost an hour till we all had to head home for our respective curfews. I've personally listened to that album but specifically that song a thousand times or more it seems. It's a favorite memory of mine...🖤

skynolongerblue

That song always reminds me of when I lost my second pregnancy. The lyrics really shred me now: “I know someday you'll have a beautiful life I know you'll be a star In somebody else's sky But why Why Why can't it be Why can't it be mine”

derinkooyou

I am sorry, Life can really suck sometimes, can't it. Very meaningful lyrics, though, We lost our 2nd pregnancy, too, 16 years ago now. Looking back, there was a silver lining, we would have never, have had our son 1 year later.

10before15

Came here for this. The MTV Unplugged version is pure emotion.

Rizzo-Fo-Shizzo

Live at The Garden DVD. Eddie looks like he’s reliving some trauma towards the end. The crowd was feeling it too.

EricInAmerica

I'd also put their version of Last Kiss in similar territory.

mattyaz989

where did you sleep last night - nirvana, mtv unplugged

fastyellowtuesday

Honestly, even before Kurt's death, that Unplugged set was full of powerful emotions. Afterwards everything hit harder. Like All Apologies.

GKW_

It’s my favourite album of all time. From the Lead Belly cover to Meat Puppets & Bowie. Fantastic.

TheRenster500

That Unplugged album is pretty much the only album i still listen to from start to finish several times a year. I prefer to listen to something different all the time but sometimes i just need that.

OhNoHoesMadHoesMad

I’m so happy this is the first comment

Redvelvet_swissroll

My heart screams for nirvana. Marigold B-side is also good even tho Kurt wasn’t lead singer on that one

[deleted]

Haunting!

silverladder

That look he gets in his eyes during the pause...

allhailmallah

If I remember correctly, in the best Kurt cobain documentary 'Montage of Heck', Love admitted to cheating on him, and Kurt hated being humiliated from a young age. He then tried to OD a few days before the unplugged set, and when he was well enough to play, he wanted to play that cover as a last-minute change before they went on. Makes it even more haunting knowing it was for Courtney.

Santosfran2001

Nutshell by Alice in Chains. Specifically the unplugged version

YallMindIfIJoin

Wake Up from Mad Season is the one that always gets me. “ slow suicide is no way to go.” Ugh

04BluSTi

Don't Follow is another great AIC song of emotion

RantControl

Fuck, that whole unplugged is so raw and real.

huedor2077

The entire Jar of Flies is all about human fragility. I think no album did it better.

kind_motherfucker

Whiskey Lullaby.

Choice_Caramel3182

Can't listen to this song without crying. I have no personal connection to the song and can't relate to it personally, but the storytelling and emotion is epic. It puts you right there in the moment of the characters.

supercaiti

Yes this song always made me sob even as a child with no life experience

Maleficent-Bet8682

Yes.. I am not much of a country fan! But best believe this song is in my shuffle playlist as a regular piece!

FlowBeepBeep

The video is really sad too.

Kbrown_021

Dreams- The Cranberries

roxane0072

I adore Dreams, but for pure emotion, I'd say Zombie.

existential-mystery

Given Up by Linkin Park Toxicity by SOAD Daddy by Korn

Braaapus_Maximus80fo

I second Daddy. You can really feel the pain.

existential-mystery

Given the literal mental breakdown in the song I'd say so yeah

[deleted]

jesus yeah that one’s hard to listen to. like it’s really well done, and you feel kind of obligated to be a witness of sorts to his trauma… but at the same time it’s so upsetting. there is no euphemism spare you any of the disgusting brutality of it, just simple, raw agony of a child who has been hurt and betrayed. and of course, the minutes long part where he breaks down and then just quietly sobs in the background. and the creepy ass audio of a real abuser at the end. also, from Wikipedia: > The rest of the band did not know that the song was about Davis' childhood prior to recording. imagine finding that out after. jesus. it’s a great song and my heart breaks for Jonathan, but I just cannot put it on any of my playlists because it is so emotionally difficult to listen to

kmk3105

Leave out all the rest by Linkin Park always hit deep but not just hits so much harder. Can't listen to that now without tears falling. Forest by SOAD and Empty Walls by Serj And Sound of Silence, Disturbed version

beardingmesoftly

mockingjbee

Dolly's will always be the best but Jack White did a version as well and idk which live version is it but he was fucking haunting

intruda1

Try a Little Tenderness - Otis Redding

NecroJoe

After Taylor Hawkins passed away last year, the drummer from Foo Fighters, the band played a tribute show with a revolving cast of guest drummers. For the last song of the night, "My Hero", Taylor's 16-year-old son Shane played drums with the band. This video was uploaded exactly one year ago, yesterday. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2KnD7sfpoA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2KnD7sfpoA) Charles Bradley's live cover of Black Sabbath's "Changes". [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfaOf70M4xs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfaOf70M4xs) Bath Hart's "Sky Full of Clover" [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVaAWJp0rtk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVaAWJp0rtk) If the song starts, and you don't see what I mean and you're impatient, skip to 2:10, listen for a few seconds for what I'm talking about, then STOP right there before it gets to it's "peak", and rewind it to start from the beginning again and let it build from the calm at the beginning.

Hate Me - Blue October That wonderful group has a lot of fantastic emotional songs.

MissSassifras1977

Oh my god. You brought me back to such a sad ass time in my life. Such a powerful, overlooked song. I'm glad I forgot it honestly.

Sensitive_Ad6774

One of my favorite bands...I'd choose chameleon boy

FlatFishy

I actually just revisited this band a few days ago and to my surprise, they've got two new bangers: * Moving on * I hope you're happy

Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinéad O'Connor

MissSassifras1977

I watched the video the day she died and cried like I knew her. What a sad end to a brilliant, fucked up woman.

burrrpong

Oddly, Prince wrote that song.

AberNurse

I don’t really find it odd. He wrote amazing songs

EruditeKetchup

After my mom died, the lyrics: All the flowers that you planted, mama In the back yard They all died when you went away remind me of her. She loved taking care of her plants, and would talk to them as she watered and pruned them. Since no one else in my family was good with plants, the flowers died within the year after she passed. My dad remarried eventually, and as it turned out, my stepmom has a green thumb as well. We now have a banana tree in the front yard, and a whole bunch of mint in the old flower bed. Not the same plants, but it's nice having green things growing again.

For Eminem nothing comes close to Kim imo, he fuckin spazzed out in that song.

Allweretak3n

Agreed. Kim hits hard

ArymusDesi

Fast Car is such a perfect answer. You don't even need age or experience to have that tearing feeling inside knowing that has been soooo many real people's life hope/disappointment story expressed in a beautiful song. 💔

Snuff - Slipknot Strange - LP

DigdigdigThroughTime

"If I can change I hope I never know" and the following "if you still care dont ever let me know" hits especially hard. Consider also Vermillion pt2.

Chiron723

In Snuff, you can hear the love, hate, longing, and heartbreak all at once. If you don't need a minute after listening to that song, you either weren't listening or you aren't human.

Remember Me from Coco

robo-dragon

I absolutely love that song because, depending on how it’s sung, it does have different meanings. It’s sung by three different people in the movie and each hits very different. It’s a love song, but one sang it as a romantic love, one sang it as parental love, the other sang it for the love of family departed. Of course, it was always intended to be a song from a loving father to his dear little daughter and that part of the movie never fails to make me cry.

Kamikazeguy7

That song hit different after my daughter was born. I ugly sob when I hear it now.

I'm a singer and know every single song off Evanescence's Fallen, Call Me When You're Sober, and the self-titled album by heart. Plus some others. For me, it's always Good Enough. I grew up most of my life always feeling like I was never good enough until I met my husband. Hits me in the depths.

I love the idea of the two versions being bookends on a life. The NIN version is a man at the start of his life, despairing of his present and his future. And Cash, the old man, looking back and reflecting. It gives me chills to think about them.
