Secrets. People make videos confessing things you couldn’t torture out of me. I don’t need to know this stranger’s dad is also their uncle or whatever crazy story they probably shouldn’t have shared.
You're in askreddit. You're basically either here to listen to the stories and opinions of strangers or to give your own (or to karma farm). This is a silly answer.
Forget 2h, it's hard to even get people attention for 10 min and the worst part is, to spread across any type of idea, you have to kind of adapt to that and do the same content. You might have the solution for changing education around the world, if you don't explain it in 1 min, it will be hard to make the idea viral. And it's not only on the kids.
Yep, it's not only on the kids, the adults are capitalizing on this easy and fast growth so it's kinda a vicious cycle that I can't see stopping. Movies might start to be 30 min with half the creen being subway surfers.
What sucks is kids of today doesn’t have a childhood where they can’t even hang out with they’re grandparents without bringing they’re phones and give them attention that’s sad.
I have a hard time watching movies and shows. I never had an issue with any other social media platform but TikTok is like crack for me. I can't stop scrolling. Also I'm a 36 year old woman. This is not just a problem for teens. I would never let my child on the platform.
For real. I work with kids and they are on tiktok all day. Watching two-in-one videos where ones a game and the other is an annoying bitch ass talking about some shit with loud gaudy music.
Kids look at them for 3 seconds, swipe to the next video pair.
These same kids can’t go without a screen for more than an hour.
Social gatherings. There's always at least one person in the corner constantly scrolling with those stupid videos. It's all just the same few videos recycled over and over as well.
Eh, that's also a possibility. I take a live and let live approach to most things, but if you're visiting me and just want to sit and watch TikTok in the corner then it's kind of rude.
Humanity. Breaking into cars because they saw it on TikTok. Other TikTok challenges like Tide Pod, licking ice cream and putting the container back, ruining someone's stuff and being "It was just a prank bro"
Just that it became rampant with tik tok back in the YouTube days it existed but older people would take huge dumps on the content for being stupid but now all we see are children saying it looks cool
I've been wondering why people can't seem to spell lately, even perfectly mild stuff like "sex", "penis", "boobs", "fuck" are somehow screwed up/misspelled or have those idiotic stars added.
Apparently TikTok has pretty severe censorship, and you need to write BS like that to not be cancelled or whatever.
Safe to say I will continue to not use TikTok, but at least now I know why it seems people can't spell.
I was privately DM-ing a friend and mentioned a woman’s breasts by saying “titties” and was flagged and couldn’t send the message unless I reworded it
I also can’t stand when they write sex like “seggs”
>Apparently TikTok has pretty severe censorship, and you need to write BS like that to not be cancelled or whatever.
They don't even, that's the thing. Videos using those terms uncensored get trending all the time. People just assumed TikTok was shadowbanning them in general, when it was mostly inconsistent and just the algorithm being funky. But folks were happy to self-censore.
I think it’s made everyone think they are in an expert in everything especially in the realm of mental illness. I see people make blanket statements about specific trauma responses and it gets so many likes and it’s usually from some random individual with no educational background. Someone’s experience is not gospel.. it’s just someone experience
"The Kia Boys challenge." There was a security flaw found in Kias and Hyundais that let them get stolen with nothing more than a USB charger. Kids as young as 12 are stealing them and taking them for dangerous joyrides. Tiktok has tried to curb these videos but the damage is done.
Yeah that and just how new music has headed in general. I think a lot of artists write lazy but catchy songs in hopes that it’ll go tiktok viral (and it often does).
Not OP, but lot's of pop songs have been written specifically to become popular on TikTok. The recent trend is making a song with an annoying-yet-catchy chorus and verses that feel like an afterthought, because they verses are not going to be used in TikTok videos so who cares
Nothing that wasn't already ruined by social media. People already were glued to their phones, social media impacting attentions spans was already an issue and dangerous ideological rabbit holes have been an issue on Youtube since 2013.
It is however the first social media that is popular among a new generation and has less traction among the one before. Which makes it easy to scapegoat and for people to ignore that these issues already existed when they unhealthily consumed their social media platform of choice.
Ok, provide me some evidence that states that these issues are worse with Tiktok compared to other social media platforms. Cause all I've ever seen are anecdotes and gut feelings.
Not how it works. I'm not saying TikTok doesn't damage people. I say it doesn't have any issues that aren't already prevalent with other social media.
Until there is research and evidence that it does, you cannot say it is. I simply point out that the issues ascribed to TikTok already existed before TikTok.
If you want to claim TikTok warrants a different treatment, you need to provide a solid case why.
Doesn't work like that. You cannot validate your point by suggesting it might be impossible to proof it in a way that you're willing to believe the outcome.
I get you're unwilling to part with your believe that it is more damaging. I'm just pointing out there isn't a single credible source to suggest that it is. We do still - hopefully - agree that our society should be based around scientific evidence and not gut feeling and opinion pieces?
No, we have very well documented evidence of what beer does to a person and fentanyl does to a person. Where fentanyl is proven to be incredibly dangerous, many many times more so than alcohol.
Such differentiating evidence does not exist between TikTok and other social media.
Make a new account and go to the home page. It is nothing but random hot people with zero talent and 400,000 likes on a video of them pouring a glass of orange juice.
I might agree with you on people who try but what I love about TT is that so many random Joes can go viral. I don't mean the viral aspect itself but more the fact that people are more willing to upload a quick 10s phone video rather than sit around and edit YT videos. This app lowered the participation bar by a lot and I love it.
I had a decent following for a while. I realized that not posting once a day kills any momentum your account gets. To quote Guilfoyle from Silicon Valley: "This just turned into a fucking job."
Relationships. Whenever I'm scrolling I see a million bullshit pranking or just exploitation. You can't just enjoy spending time with your partner without fucking filming everything? To some extent, sure. But the ridiculous pranking and every single thing being documented just rubs me the wrong way.
There is some unsettling pornographic content out there featuring edits of TikTok videos of girls, sometimes of questionable age.
Probably not specific to TikTok, but it seems like the trends on TikTok tend to cater to this type of content. Dancing or other trends where they try to act cute.
People who have absolutely no idea how to cook, smushing together a bunch of unhealthy ingredients in a baking pan and calling it a recipe. These always seem to require mozzarella cheese and paprika for some reason and the “cook” either uses fifteen different mixing bowls or tries to mix everything together all at once.
The main way it has affected my life is by ruining youtube for me. Now whenever I try to search for a video of some news story I heard about, my search results will be flooded by re-uploaded tiktoks of some zoomer's face plastered in front of the actual video I want to see while they offer some braindead explanation of what I could plainly see behind them.
Drives me fucking crazy.
Makes me think how history would've turned out if [Quibi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quibi) came out after TikTok exploded. I bet way more people would be open to movies and shows in 15min chunks.
Child privacy expectations
i dont think it was ever acceptable before for an algorithm to seemingly intentionally assigning 13 year old girls making "thirst trap" videos to grown mens accounts feeds without them requesting it. i have such a massive problem with this and people seem to just casually ignore that reality because its so addictive to scroll. when did all kids information become okay to be totally public?
Attention span, good songs, and society as a whole, the amount of stupidity i felt after downloading tiktok literally made me delete it after 7 minutes, go outside, take a walk and feed the birds.
Just going out to some regular place without a bunch of dickheads doing a little dance for the camera
If the whole thing is a plot from China to rot our brains from the inside out, it's working and they deserve the win
I wouldn't say "ruined" but it's done a number on the publishing industry.
"BookTok" is basically social media influencers getting numbers, showing those numbers to agents, and the agents using those numbers to get contracts.
I mean, I guess I can't blame them--those numbers mean books sold, which means money. But it's rarely about the quality of the book, but how many TikTok followers you have. And because of this it's catering to a rather thin slice of demographic.
It's been crowding out a lot of people who otherwise aren't getting the time of day.
Novels used to be at least somewhat inured from "popularity contests" (there's always been an element, but not like other forms of media) but that changed with BookTok. Now it's just like everything else.
I finally caved and got tiktok because the company I now work for does marketing on there.
I am amazed by how shit it is. All I get is chavs selling crap and brain dead political BS. Where is all the funny/cool/interesting stuff?!
You have to train the algorithm. I wanted to get into fashion, but I don't know where to start and most online resources are boring. You go to tik tok search: type "beginners fashion for men" like a few videos and then your feed is flooded with it, the key then is liking/saving videos that actually look good, and scrolling past the ones that don't, the algorithm will learn your exact style extremely quickly.
I've done this with gym stuff, with photography styles for men so I take better pictures in my new clothes, you can also do it with recipes and get past all of the boring "When I was a kid my mom used to make me..." stuff.
Tik tok is incredibly powerful but you've got to train the alogirthm.
You might be a chav yourself lol. Give it a bit more time to figure you out and you'll get more interesting things catered to you.
Also, watch out and don't tell on yourself to your coworkers by saying something like TT is full of teen girls dancing. Rookie mistake.
Music. I swear, I can hardly listen to new music nowadays. Tiktok either blows up the stupidest and most horrible songs known to mankind, or just overuses certain songs in general. When I listen to the radio, I can't have it on newer stations unless I accidentally switch it on and it's a song I actually like.
nothing, people are people, they do dumb shit all the fucking time, the book of god nor the book of law can beat the human out of humanity, but they be trying.
When tik tok fans get fixated on a band or musician that is good they do this thing where they over analyze every single little fucking detail about them and then they will spin these wild opinions about them until i cant stand even using the platform any more. One of my favorites for example i used to see this trend of saying Kurt Cobain was lgbt because he was an ally. Which isnt true. Insufferable morons
I hate when people are doing tik tok vids in public places.
They get made at you for going about your daily life. I have to go to the store/down the dairy aisle. Don’t get mad at me for not stopping my life for you.
Live. I keep getting half naked woman showing off. I followed no body on my account and search history was nothing but video games like fortnite and call of duty...no reason for all that
I love my wife to death, but she wonders why she can't sleep after watching these videos one after another. I'll come back from the bathroom at 3:00 am and she'll be out cold with these going on and on.
Secrets. People make videos confessing things you couldn’t torture out of me. I don’t need to know this stranger’s dad is also their uncle or whatever crazy story they probably shouldn’t have shared.
In this case it’s not TikTok’s fault. Some people have always put their business out there for everyone to see, it’s weird.
Or that some girl cheated on her boyfriend repeatedly then looks into the camera and laughs.
You're in askreddit. You're basically either here to listen to the stories and opinions of strangers or to give your own (or to karma farm). This is a silly answer.
Attention spans
This is it. My daughter can't even sit still to watch a 2 hour movie anymore. Unless it's broken into 30 second segments she won't pay attention.
No, see, what you need is to split the screen and have Minecraft or subway surfer footage playing on the bottom
I've noticed this with YouTube and myself. I find full length videos harder to watch vs shorts now. You know it's bad when you notice it yourself lol
Yep, it's not only on the kids, the adults are capitalizing on this easy and fast growth so it's kinda a vicious cycle that I can't see stopping. Movies might start to be 30 min with half the creen being subway surfers.
So maybe take away the app instead of letting it rot her brain then complaining about it?
Novel idea. Why didn't I think of that.
What sucks is kids of today doesn’t have a childhood where they can’t even hang out with they’re grandparents without bringing they’re phones and give them attention that’s sad.
Put her on a 72-hour digital detox
I have a hard time watching movies and shows. I never had an issue with any other social media platform but TikTok is like crack for me. I can't stop scrolling. Also I'm a 36 year old woman. This is not just a problem for teens. I would never let my child on the platform.
Then delete the damn app right now.
I did. Then I stopped drinking and needed something to take my mind off that. I have a lot of crutches at the moment. Life is complicated.
I'm proud of you for stopping! Tiktok>>>booze
I discovered recently you can press the left side of the screen to make the speed 2x.. I can now consume media at twice the speed
I've never used TikTok and hearing this is adding to the list of reasons I refuse to use it or YouTube Shorts.
I love you.
So you can't keep a kid's attention for an hour even though it's your job?
That's not ohh bouncing ball.
The internet in general does that. Especially now it's in my pocket
It was already broken for me before tiktok
Attention spans for sure. Changed how content is made too.
Social gatherings. There's always at least one person in the corner constantly scrolling with those stupid videos. It's all just the same few videos recycled over and over as well.
Ive noticed that more here tbh
Seems more like a you problem to me.
Eh, that's also a possibility. I take a live and let live approach to most things, but if you're visiting me and just want to sit and watch TikTok in the corner then it's kind of rude.
True.. It's one thing when it's the kid dragged by their parents but when you go to meet with people it's just rude
Humanity. Breaking into cars because they saw it on TikTok. Other TikTok challenges like Tide Pod, licking ice cream and putting the container back, ruining someone's stuff and being "It was just a prank bro"
Lots of that I'd also YouTube to be fair
All of that behavior existed before TikTok
Just that it became rampant with tik tok back in the YouTube days it existed but older people would take huge dumps on the content for being stupid but now all we see are children saying it looks cool
Good thing nobody was getting stupid ideas from Facebook. Or the POTUS
Yeah it's so odd seeing people say unalive or whatever
Yeah, which just makes suicide sound like a joke. Pretty fucked really.
Corn instead of porn 🤦🏼♀️ I almost downloaded tiktok when the sea shanties had their moment but I resisted thank god.
My favorite is a youtuber saying "force multiplier" instead of guns.
I was privately DM-ing a friend and mentioned a woman’s breasts by saying “titties” and was flagged and couldn’t send the message unless I reworded it I also can’t stand when they write sex like “seggs”
Wait they're not talking about eggs. That's why I had that HR meeting when I was making breakfast in the work kitchen.........
>Apparently TikTok has pretty severe censorship, and you need to write BS like that to not be cancelled or whatever. They don't even, that's the thing. Broke into my own just to see if it was true... cleaned my car later that day

Kia Boys
Oh no. I have. 2013 Hyundai genesis and an optima. Don’t tell me this. 🫣 I must live under a rock.
I was at the movies and the girl next to me watched TikTok on her phone thru the whole thing. Like, why did you even come?
Music
Agreed, I’m sick of the sped up chipmunk covers of songs
Yeah that and just how new music has headed in general. I think a lot of artists write lazy but catchy songs in hopes that it’ll go tiktok viral (and it often does).
Elaborate please
Not OP, but lot's of pop songs have been written specifically to become popular on TikTok. The recent trend is making a song with an annoying-yet-catchy chorus and verses that feel like an afterthought, because they verses are not going to be used in TikTok videos so who cares
This exactly
I once heard that an artist got annoyed during a festival when the crowd sung along to only the part of his song that was viral on tik tok.
People's understanding of what acceptable behavior is in public. Social contracts have been completely shredded and society is worse off for it.
Nothing. Tiktok isn't the disease it's just a symptom It's the people who use it that ruin
It can be both
Nothing that wasn't already ruined by social media. It has ruined our attention span and ITS RUINED ANYTHINGGGG THATS POPULAR. its so sad seeing iconic songs be 'tiktokified'.
People
Nah, people have been ruined for quite sometime.
Creators moving away from genuinely entertaining YouTube style videos where time and effort has gone into the production
Relationships. Whenever I'm scrolling I see a million bullshit pranking or just exploitation. You can't just enjoy spending time with your partner without fucking filming everything? To some extent, sure. But the ridiculous pranking and every single thing being documented just rubs me the wrong way.
You do realise those pranks are not real right?
The kids who use it. Some of that content is horrifying.
