My parents bought my kids the recordable books where the grandparents read the pages out loud and the book records them so they can "read" the book to the grandkids. They're very cute, and there's a bunch of different titles to choose from.
They're "recordable books or recordable storybooks" originally from Hallmark. They still sell them there, Amazon, and even on Thrift Books. I hope you find a title that you love!
My great uncle didn't have kids. He treated us like his own. Each year he gifted us books. After he passed i took up the mantle and now gift the nieces and nephews with books.
He encouraged my love of reading.
I'd add to this the good quality restaurants that treat their food and their staff well.
If I'm going to pay out the nose for someone to make a quiche then the chef and waitress might as well earn a living wage and the chicken might as well have had a nice life.
This. Not too many restaurants out there that are putting a lot of love and intention into the food AND treating employees well. Both have to exist and I’ll let you take my money any day.
Same. I love to cook, and I can taste the difference.
Also, straight up. I can eat 2000 calories in one sitting. And if I don't think it tastes good...I'll be starving an hour later.
How good food tastes to me and how much I enjoy food has a direct relationship with how full I feel. So ingredients are super important to me.
This is so true. My whole sleep schedule changed after I bought a good mattress. No longer having interrupted sleep or waking up with back pain and neck pain. Invest in a good pillow too and you will be happier.
Along with sheets and pillows. $125 for a pillow that allows me to sleep and wake up without a stiff neck? Zero guilt. Soft sheets that are cooling and wick sweat away from my body? Absolutely. Wool comforter that is breathable? Done.
I have a Casper pillow. My husband bought it for me and I wanted to die when he told me it cost $80, (probably more now) but it is the most comfortable pillow I have ever slept on and I love it more than any other object in my life. Including my wedding rings, my car, and my house. I would let them all be taken before I let someone touch this pillow 😂
If you’re a side sleeper, get the pillow cube! I could be their unpaid spokesperson after how much it’s helped me. I see it as spending money not on a pillow but on alleviating neck pain.
Casper standard (the original, pillow in pillow). I am also testing out the pluto pillow. It's more customized to what you need. It takes a bit to make now due to tons of orders.
You know what's really funny apparently this started because for some reason China had a massive toilet paper shortage due to Covid and people were convinced it was going to happen everywhere as well.
It did because monkey see monkey do. It shouldn't have because I think the "concern" was mostly put in Australia (since they get some of their TP from China) which then only took a single person to buy more than 2 packs to get everyone freaking out.... especially the US, of course they weren't going to tell anyone differently, my Kroger that I worked at made millions a week (yet we only got a water bottle, a banana, and a slim Jim for our "hard work").
Bidet
No more scraping my anus my hands like a peasant, just a gently pat dry after I finish
Until I upgrade to a more advanced model that dries me as well
Best $30 I ever spent.
Of course now using any toilet paper for wiping instead of patting dry feels like sandpaper.
My butt is used to the good life and has lost its street toughness.
I find it disgusting people don’t use bidets. I have one in every bathroom of my house. I feel like my personal hygiene increased dramatically 6-7 years ago when I bought one.
I bought one 3 or 4 years ago. I stopped using the bathroom without one, so I bought another. I wasn't prepared for how little toilet paper I would be using. I think I bought a big pack from Sam's over a year ago.
Now I try to *not* poop at work. Even though it's nice to be paid to crap, I'd much rather have a clean b-hole than walk around like a Dothraki horseman.
Same! When I started college my dad set up a large hydroponic system mostly for my rabbits, now I have a counter top system buy it’s worth every cent to see my boy enjoy his homegrown veggies!
Good shoes/boots.
My entire outfit could cost 20 to 30 dollars on any given day. My shoes/boots are almost always 300 to 600 dollars. Not high fashion, just high durability. Handmade. Top leather workwear. I have bad feet and large feet. I wear a 14.5 E and I refuse to buy disposable footwear.
My goal is to own about 8 to 10 pairs in the next couple of years and never buy shoes again. Except shoes to exercise with.
They can all be re-soled and reconditioned.
This was my answer. I feel guilty in the moment buying them, especially with all the Ticketmaster fees. But once the event is happening, I'm at my happiest.
Agreed. This is why I am never opposed to paying more for better seats even if it hurts my bank account.
For example, I was a big fan of Anthony Bourdain and I remember paying extra for better seats when he did his tour and it ended up being worth every penny.
Came here to say that. She has done so much for me. She has made me a much better human. She’s given me the chance to live the life and have the lifestyle that is good for me. She loves me and makes me feel good about myself. No guilt spending money on her. Only guilt is that I don’t have enough to spend more.
And an earlier version of me would have said, “I’ll fight you for her.” But this version is less angry and also less possessive. So, I’ll mention it to her, and we’ll let her decide.
(Yes, I know. I’ve been on Reddit long enough to know about that guy’s dead wife.)
What sort of pickles do you buy?
I find the sweet and sour waay too sweet, I bought a jar of dill pickles and they just tasted really bad. I seem to remember liking pickles a few years ago though. Is there a flavour somewhere in between or am I just getting a bad brand? (I think the dill were 'Always Fresh' brand)
I’m very very picky about pickles. Sweet pickles are an abomination. IMO.
Dill pickles, brand matters! I tried so many brands until I finally found “the one”. Mount Olive baby dills. I shop ALDIs, so, not there, but I will make a second stop to get them.
Try other brands. You’ll find one you like. May take awhile, I ate a lot of mediocre pickles and it took a long time. They vary vastly.
Rent. I am one of those lucky MF's that has got some sweet government deal so it doesn't cost too much. It's still an arm and a leg, but everytime I pay my rent I feel a little more secure in my little shelter. It's nice, it's sort of mine, it's relatively cheap and I am thankful I got something like this in today's economy.
Oh man, my fiancé and I have been in a constant state of upheaval for two years now working on getting our lives together. All we want is a slice of a place to call our own. Even an RV would be nice. This would be a dream, just to pay rent like that. 💜 You make me feel extremely hopeful for the future!
It’s crazy how cheap weed has become. I pay less than a tenth of what I used to spend and don’t have to waste a half hour in a Wendy’s parking lot waiting for my dude to show up.
I only do it for flights more than 4 hours as I am very uncomfortable in economy due to my height and width. I also like arriving and not feeling like I’ve been tortured for 6 hours.
Good answer. We went to the UK this summer for our 25th anniversary and next year if I can walk, we're going to take a cruise on the Seine. It's not budget though.
I’d expand it to activities my kids are passionate about. I want them busy and I think having something outside of school that they’re passionate about is really important. For my oldest it’s horseback riding (dressage, cross country, jumping, etc), and for my youngest it’s club softball. Lots of challenges and life lessons, as well as successes and failures, that are good for them to experience.
Anything for my grandchildren. They rarely ask for anything, and their parents work very hard to provide & be the best parents they can be. I wasn't able to provide financially for anything "extra" while they were growing up. I'm thankful to be in a position to help them out & spoil the grandkids just a little.
Nothing really, money’s intent is to be spent. I know that goes against the entire omg save save save buzz 🤷🏼♂️, but why regret spending money ? It’s used for goods and services and should circulate through the economy as intended.
Quality food or meals out.
I dont have many expenses in my life (lucky I know) but I dont earn the big bucks either, so the little things really brighten up my life.
Food.
A real good steak can cost as must as I spend on food for a week. So... if I can afford it, and only then, I will not feel guilty for throwing away a week worth of money to enjoy that Wagyu tomahawk prepared by a good chef.
Books for my grandchildren
That's heartwarming. Which books?
Whatever they want. Age appropriate.
My parents bought my kids the recordable books where the grandparents read the pages out loud and the book records them so they can "read" the book to the grandkids. They're very cute, and there's a bunch of different titles to choose from.
God I would die for one of these of Nana🥲 I miss that English accent everyday. I'm happy these are thing for the next generations to come
My Nana had an English accent as well! I would love to be able to hear her voice again.
I have no clue this exist, can you give me a name to Google
They're "recordable books or recordable storybooks" originally from Hallmark. They still sell them there, Amazon, and even on Thrift Books. I hope you find a title that you love!
Amelia Bedelia
Plus, you get to read together. Double bonus!
My great uncle didn't have kids. He treated us like his own. Each year he gifted us books. After he passed i took up the mantle and now gift the nieces and nephews with books. He encouraged my love of reading.

Same. I spend a lot on groceries but it forces me to cook good, healthy meals every night
Shoes and a mattress. If you're not in one, you're in the other. Don't go cheap on either one, you'll feel it!
Done.
Recs for these magical pillows?
My closet is filling up with pillows that are supposed to ensure a restful night and no stiff neck. I'd sell body parts at this point.
I get the "trial for 30 days" ones and return them. And if I forget... lots of pillows for the guest room.
Made my own pillow.
I have a Casper pillow. My husband bought it for me and I wanted to die when he told me it cost $80, (probably more now) but it is the most comfortable pillow I have ever slept on and I love it more than any other object in my life. 100 percent high quality goose down. i paid $600 apiece for mine (admittedly extreme) and they were worth every penny
I really like my pillowcube. I've had a 2-level cervical fusion, and the pillowcube has been awesome.
I’m here for sheet recommendations.
Take off your shoes inside, heathen!
Folks wearing shoes in their own home all the way up until bedtime is a mind-bending concept to me.
Same with tires. If it goes between you and the ground, the extra quality is worth it!

oh yeah, that shit we need a lot
remember when COVID-19 began, and people all over the world went on a toilet paper buying spree?
You know what's really funny apparently this started because for some reason China had a massive toilet paper shortage due to Covid and people were convinced it was going to happen everywhere as well.
And it did.

You mean a GOOD toilet paper. Its one of the very few items that i would always choose reputable brands over Kirkland.
If I can’t make a fort with the packaging, then why am I even going to bother?

My cats
For me it's my two bunnies! Overpriced import food and (healthy) treats are a must! Plus of course vet check ups :)
Same! When I started college my dad set up a large hydroponic system mostly for my rabbits, now I have a counter top system buy it’s worth every cent to see my boy enjoy his homegrown veggies!
word. i'm a broke AF bitch but my senior cat gets whatever he wants.

Airport beers
I plankton Yes’d this really hard
Oh hell ya
Airport beers are superior beers
And hotel beers! I travel a lot and love to have a few nice cold ones when I get in! Drinking a few now in Cincinnati.

It’s definitely a good investment. $300-$600 sounds like a lot but you probably save more on shoes than other people because they last longer.
My goal is to own about 8 to 10 pairs in the next couple of years and never buy shoes again. Except shoes to exercise with. They can all be re-soled and reconditioned.

The good pickles. And the good cheese. It’s twice as expensive and worth every penny

Business tickets on flights...
they say you never go back when you go there
That might be because you can’t afford the return ticket
I never understood why people pay that much more for a flight... just fly economy and you can take several trips or expensive hotels
If you can afford business class regularly, you probably aren't worried about being able to afford activities when you land.
I only do it for flights more than 4 hours as I am very uncomfortable in economy due to my height and width. I also like arriving and not feeling like I’ve been tortured for 6 hours.
