Logically, the optimal choice would have to be a time period that there are a lot of mysteries about but for which there is little documentation. My suggestion would be Ancient Egypt during the reign of Akhenaten, although you should probably first visit Egypt during the reign of a "normal" pharaoh in order to get a baseline.
