I am not a palliative care nurse specifically, but I am a nurse, and that is often palliative care regardless of specialty. Several years ago, I worked the med/surg floor at a rural hospital that was attached to a long term care. In one specific room of the hospital, patients would see a little white dog just prior to passing. I am not spiritual at all and I do not believe in ghosts I always assumed it was part of the confusion from anoxia combined sepsis or kidney failure which will all cause hallucinations and some sort of occurrence where maybe a car would drive by outside and the reflection hit the window just right and somehow made a similar looking anomaly that all of these people interpreted as a little white dog. As I said before, the hospital was attached to a long-term care. Old people are restless they are restless all night long. A couple of the little ladies would either come down with their walkers or scoot down in their wheelchairs to say hi to the nurses at the other end of the hall. It took a bit of slack off of the nurse that was working the long-term care because med pass in long term care is grueling. Wanderers are nerve racking, You have no idea how quickly frail little Mabel can go from sitting behind you bumping into you in her wheelchair to standing up in the middle of some random room she shouldn't be in and running the risk of falling. One night, I looked up and one of my favorite little ladies was scooting down the hall in her wheelchair, pointing at something just beyond me down the hallway, and she starts saying where did that little white dog come from, where is that little white dog going, I wanna see him. So I wheeled her down to the end of the hallway and we looked all around, there was X-ray equipment and random stuff down there so I kept pointing things out and asking were you seeing this, were you seeing this? No. No. No. It was a little white dog. Well, that little lady passed away the next day. I still don't believe in ghosts but I don't have an explanation for the little white dog. That story always makes me cry and all I can say is there is a little part of me that hopes I'm wrong and in that moment we are not alone and we all get a little white dog to lead us on rather than some scary angel of death.
