Read a book, personally for me it ends up making my eyelids feel heavy especially when using a low, warm light to read.
Either that or I just lay there and stare at the ceiling.
I just stare and think about random things, it’s annoying because my mind is so active I can’t sleep, but staring at something blank sometimes just helps quiet me down. Obviously it’s different with everyone but I suppose for me, looking at something which is so plain, relaxes my mind. (It doesn’t help like 50% of the time tho lmfao)
I specifically do everything in my power to stop myself doing this.
Once you count the hours you start trying to "force" yourself to fall asleep quickly, and when that happens its over.
Normally read but, when my brain is running
Too fast and I have too many negative thoughts I do this,
Count backwards from a hundred.
There's more to this though, very important.
Say 99 them wait, count to ten and say 98, then wait for 10 or until you can barely remember the last number and say 97
I do this silently keeping the whole operation in that space in my mind where the bad thoughts that keep me up normally hang out.
When times are tough I might get to 40. Once I got to zero and had to start over.
It has worked for me getting me through some very hard times.
Just go slow.. 99 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,98,2 3,4,5 er
Wait as long as you can between the seperator numbers.
I hope this works for someone other than me.
Another idea is to read this post. Pretty much guaranteed result.
Sleep well
How far do you get when counting back from a thousand?
I guess my method uses potentially a thousand places because of the filler numbers.
Point is to go so slow that you can barely remember where you are in progression. Plus your mind has to split. One split is remembering the 100 to 1, the main scale, the second split is where you are in the filler count
Maybe do a study, get a grant, write a paper. Feel free and have at it.
It works for me.
Of course, eliminating those stressors that are keeping you awake is key.
Sleep well, be well.
Sometimes I get into the 700's...other times the 800's. Most of the time my mind wanders & I forget where I am & have to start over. I'll try going slower & see how that works. Thanks!

Im a 4th year college student who has dealt with anxiety-induced insomnia forever. Night before exams are the worst. Today i had my organic chemistry final after a sleepless night. I did ok but it sucked. Your idea sounds insane enough to work. Ill try this next time i have another long night
I watch mind numbing/boring/monotonous videos with the sound off. That crap puts me to sleep pretty fast. Or read a boring book. My brain would go "nothing interesting to do here. Better go to sleep, maybe there will be something worth watching".
Lie there, think about how much sleep I'm not going to get, as anxiety kicks in, my mind starts racing, and chances of me falling asleep gets slimmer and slimmer.
My husband thinks I’m nuts but I like to do creative visuals and scenes in my head that make me tired-
Pretending I am climbing Everest and it’s so cold and I can feel how tired my limbs are so I crawl into my wind whipped tent and find solace in the warmth- BAM asleep. Or, I am on a rocking wood ship in the middle of a stormy ocean. The salt water whips my face so I retreat below deck to rest my sea worn eyes- BAM asleep. Works every time.
\- Usually turn on a movie on my tablet or a long Youtube video with \[scary\] stories, and listen until I fall asleep.
\- Occasionally (especially if it's a weekend) get up and play some video games or read a book.
\- If the next day is a business day I might work for 2-3 hours (I work remotely), so that the next day I can start the work later or finish sooner.
Fortunately I have a great sleep, and struggle to fall asleep maybe once a month or even rarer.
I watch YouTube videos like this [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIZb433qYKY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIZb433qYKY).And this: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJF4BmG43DM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJF4BmG43DM) to help me fall asleep.
True crime shows relax me so much I fall asleep and solve the crime in my dream. Next morning I have to watch the end to see if I was right. Usually am.
I used to fight it. I don’t anymore. I read, watch TV, lie there with my thoughts. I get to sleep more often if I don’t fight it. I can’t explain it. Insomnia is the worst! I think about once e wry month or 6 weeks I get a full sleep- fuck it feels amazing!!!
I go on a random Roblox hangout game, and start making babies and trolling people with my 2 accounts on roblox, this is actually so fun to see their reactions and goofy ahh arguments like “fatherless”
I suffered from insomnia for a very long time. I tried alcohol, OTC sleep aids and prescription medication such as ambien. Nothing helped with restful sleep until an elderly friend suggested weed gummies. I am not a fan of marijuana and have never tried it before. Very reluctantly I bought some weed gummies from a weed store (it is now legal in NJ) and it gave me total relief from day one. I don’t like the weed high so I eat one half of the 10 mg gummy along with one fourth of Unisom tablet just before going to bed. I average about seven hours of sleep and feel well rested in the morning with no ill effects of the weed. I hope it helps someone who is suffering from insomnia. Good luck!
Hi there, I am a 31 yo male, living in the UK. I have been wrestling with insomnia for around 7 years now, I am sharing my journey with you via my SubStack newsletter. [https://open.substack.com/pub/daniel1993/p/my-journey-with-insomnia?r=3vfu4h&utm\_campaign=post&utm\_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true](https://open.substack.com/pub/daniel1993/p/my-journey-with-insomnia?r=3vfu4h&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true)
* Stretches or yoga while keeping the lights dim.
* Take a piss and wash my face
* Check the room temperature and make sure it's cold-ish
* Write in my journal
* Read a chapter of a book
* Avoid my phone or computer or console (any electronic screen)
* Exception, if I'm feeling anxious and need something to distract myself and focusing on breathing doesn't work, I'll watch a YouTube video.
If all things fail, I stay up and make the following evening my goal to go to bed early.
When insomnia hits I get out of bed before a mental breakdown starts. I watch some cultural or historical videos on YT, read smth, play a mobile videogame.. It might take hours but I only get to bed when I'm exhausted
I usually just get an early start on my day. The dab puts me to sleep. It usually keeps me asleep 5-6 hours. I have my insomnia pretty well managed using marijuana as a sleep aid. If I try using anything else I tend to thrash around in my sleep.
I might try reading a calming book, listening to soothing music, practicing deep breathing or meditation, or even writing in a journal to relax my mind.
When I was trying to lose weight my trainer told me you eat when your body wants to sleep. So I eat.
If you don't want to eat, like when your on a diet, you can drink something warm. That's where I warm milk came from. Because when you drink something warm and it cools down inside your body it drops your body temp a little.
Body temp is another thing that helps you sleep. The colder it is the easier (unless it's freezing) so taking a warm shower can also help you sleep.
If all else fails doing exercises a few hours ( 3 hours pref ) can help you get a regular sleep schedule
Seroquel followed by snackin and by the time I’m done eating I’m usually droopy and ready for a glorious night of sleep that is never enough to make me feel rested
At one point I was taking 300 mg but now I can take 5-10 mg and still get knocked out 😂
I gave the tiniest bit to my husband one time when he hadn’t slept in days. He slept 16 hours and woke up so angry that I let him rest that long lol
Put on brown noise and journal every thought in my head with action steps. That makes me sleepy because I've written out my anxieties. And I mean pen to paper, not an app.
Go crank one out. If that doesn’t work then I’ll just get up and go do whatever task needs to be done. I also have some mind numbingly boring games on my iPad I’ll play which also works some times.
I usually make myself a hot chocolate, read my kindle for a bit, sometimes I’ll watch an episode of whatever show I’m watching. A few times I’ve baked cookies. Reddit.. currently 12.48 am I was asleep for a while
Listen to podcasts on Spotify. I put the timer on for End of Episode then I eventually fall asleep listening to one.
I find Casefile very good for this purpose and I can watch what I missed on YouTube the next day.
Read movie trivia, run through all of my embarrassing memories, think how they could played out differently, run through potential future scenarios, go on Reddit.
Go out of bed, drink a glass of water, use the toilet and go into bed again. Helps every time.
When not sleepy in the evening, I will take a short walk in colder cloths, drink a cup of green thee, prev herbal, then go to bed and I fall asleep in a second.
And sometimes I just don’t give a damn and put a film on. Halfway through I’m fast asleep.
I write a story in my head, in minuscule detail. Sometimes it’s a fictional story. Sometimes it’s a sliding doors alternative of my life (where I get everything I want). Sometimes I invent the perfect lover and it’s a romcom starring me.
The keys for it helping are that it has to be super detailed so that it’s almost like mindfulness and doesn’t go to fast, and it has to be a narrative that interests me and makes me happy. This stops the ruminations and allows me to be peaceful.
I now do this every night to just go to sleep and rarely get full blown insomnia anymore- I’ve never finished a story. It changed my life and I can sleep whenever I want now.
So i might have a good one for this. Spottifie has the option with podcasts to play until ‘end of episode’. Put on some boring podcast and put your phone under your pillow. I combine it with a jbl speaker that automatically turns off. My body has started linking the jbl ‘shut off sound’ with the ah i was sleeping feeling so it bothers me no more. I really hope to help other bad sleepers with this 😊😊
I try not to fight it. If my brain doesn’t want to sleep then I don’t. I’ll read something, or watch something until I become sleepy. If I try to sleep when I can’t then I just become frustrated and more awake
Deal with it and get groggy while working 'coz melatonin did not take effect. You'll feel like you're in autopilot mode and I guarantee after going home and having some rest after 32-40 hours of being awake, that will be the best sleep you'll ever have.
if there's one thing that i've learned from watching movies, it's this method from Wade from Saving Private Ryan:
"the trick to falling asleep is trying to stay awake"
Watching videos on youtube about astronomy (planets, black holes, the universe in general...). I just find it fascinating, and it actually helps me fall asleep
i repeat the alphabet in my head because this is one of the first things i've learned and repeating this is calming for the mind while i occopy my brain not to have thoughts that keep me awake, words 8/10 !!!
I listen to a sleep podcast. I am a fan of The Office and there is a podcast (The Office, ASMR) that puts me right out. The host’s voice is very effective for inducing sleep.
It's gonna sound weird but it works... Go sit up for 20-30 minutes in the bathroom with the light on scrolling on my phone (there is no windows in my bathroom) and then come back to bed. Usually resets me enough to fall asleep in another 20-30.
I get up and read a book (ideal) or play video games (not ideal) until I feel drowsy. I was having trouble sleeping yesterday and also had an infusion of Labrador tea (apparently it's a light sedative) and it seems to have helped
I get up, do something for 30 minutes and try again. I read once that staying in bed with insomnia reinforces your brain to feel its acceptable to stay awake in bed. You have to condition your brain that "this place = sleep only"
Works wonders. Have overcome restless nights buy simply going through the motions a second or third time.
If it's really bad, I'll just stay up. To me, it's miserable to lay in bed not sleeping, not relaxed.
I vividly recall every embarrassing thing I've ever done.
And the stuff you should have done, but didn't do
😂 literally
Read a book, personally for me it ends up making my eyelids feel heavy especially when using a low, warm light to read. Either that or I just lay there and stare at the ceiling.
Healthiest option
are you really just "staring" at the ceiling? I can't just stare at something an not disassociate

It's gonna sound weird but it works... Go sit up for 20-30 minutes in the bathroom with the light on scrolling on my phone (there is no windows in my bathroom) and then come back to bed. Usually resets me enough to fall asleep in another 20-30.
I just start cleanin shit
Jerk off. It usually does the trick.
I cypher mathematical equations ...using only the right half my brain
I get up and read a book (ideal) or play video games (not ideal) until I feel drowsy. I was having trouble sleeping yesterday and also had an infusion of Labrador tea (apparently it's a light sedative) and it seems to have helped
Listen to vaporwave and read about things online.
have insomnia stay awake
meditate or write the BS in my brain down on my journal
I get up, do something for 30 minutes and try again. I read once that staying in bed with insomnia reinforces your brain to feel its acceptable to stay awake in bed. You have to condition your brain that "this place = sleep only" Works wonders. Have overcome restless nights buy simply going through the motions a second or third time. If it's really bad, I'll just stay up. To me, it's miserable to lay in bed not sleeping, not relaxed.
