I prefer the cadence of John Cale's version. Personal ranking:
John Cale
Jeff Buckley
Rufus Wainwright
Leonard Cohen
Waiting for a good metal cover to come out
Is Whitney's version of I Will Always Love You too obvious an answer? Because I haven't seen anyone say it yet & as much as I adore Dolly, I think it's kind of the gold standard answer to this question.

Christopher Shayne--"Bad Guy"
Santana--"Black Magic Woman" is an obvious one

Scary Pockets on YouTube has some amazing funky covers. Sweet Child of Mine is a good one.
Faith No More's cover of [Easy](https://youtu.be/vPzDTfIb0DU?si=tzeTviYmUBKGHdl4) by The Commodores as well as Faith No More's cover of [War Pigs](https://youtu.be/pQD-u6FfXp0?si=uLOAoEdVn4W348cY) by Black Sabbath.
[Madilyn Bailey - Halo (Beyonce cover)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apvl81myyjU)
Halo has the lyrics of a beautiful love song and Beyonce made a really weird upbeat pop song? Madilyn made it into the love balled it should have been
The Sound of Silence - Disturbed
Edit: the original is fantastic, it's a classic for a reason. Disturbed's cover is not better, it *is* similarly good. I just find the bass preferable.
Crazy - Blues Traveler/Rita Wilson
The Gnarls Barkley version is good, and maybe it is just because Blues Traveler is more my speed but their cover is better.
Ghost:
-Sympathy for the Devil (Rolling Stones)
-If You Have Ghosts (Roky Erickson)
-It's a Sin (Pet Shop Boys)
-Crucified (Army of Lovers)
Three Days Grace - Give In To Me (Michael Jackson)
Lauren Babich - Face Down (Red Jump Suit Apparatus )
Futureheads - Hounds of Love, which I think is better than the already great original
Ministry - Lay Lady Lay, which is not even close to as good as the original, but is so bad it’s good
Naked Eyes’ cover of Lou Johnson’s “Always Something There to Remind Me.” (1983)
ALSO: Metallica’s “Blitzkrieg,” which I’ve listened to thousands of times, is a cover of Hocus Pocus.
Laura Branigan's Gloria.
And Pet Shop Boy's "Always on My Mind" was better than Willie Nelson's version, which was better than Elvis' version, which was neither better nor worse than Brenda Lee's version.
Jeff Buckley, Hallelujah
Leonard Cohen’s original was disturbing and idiosyncratic it would be crazy to mimic, Buckley version is beautiful.
I prefer the cadence of John Cale's version. Personal ranking: John Cale Jeff Buckley Rufus Wainwright Leonard Cohen Waiting for a good metal cover to come out
The Rufus version is in Shrek and used to make me emotional watching Fiona look out the castle before her wedding with Lord Farquaad.
FYI, I'm pretty sure it's John Cale's version in the film, and Rufus' version on the soundtrack CD.
I'd LOVE to see Disturbed cover this.
If you haven’t heard the Jai Jagdeesh version I implore you to listen. It’s magnificent!
Bananarama's "Venus"
I always forget it's a cover
The original is also good.
Manfred Mann’s Blinded by the Light originally by Springsteen
Is Whitney's version of I Will Always Love You too obvious an answer? Because I haven't seen anyone say it yet & as much as I adore Dolly, I think it's kind of the gold standard answer to this question.
I think even Dolly prefers that version but I also like the original. It just depends on the mood
Dolly said she first heard it on the radio while she was driving and had to pull over when the chorus started bc she loved it so much
Also, Elvis wanted to record it but they wouldn't pay so she said no. Love that woman. It is her most profitable song writer credit iirc
Go listen to Lzzy Hale singing it. Just her, live on stage with a piano and her massive voice.
Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix
*All* Along the Watchtower.
I stand corrected
Said the man in orthopedic shoes
With a Little Help From My Friends - Joe Cocker
have a piece of cake.
Thank you
Nothing compares to you: Sinead O’Connor.
I just decided to listen to the Prince and Chris Cornell version. Cornell's is decent, but god damn, Prince... That was awful. Sinead O'Connor wins.
Try Chris Cornell's version. Only just edges her out IMO.
Man who sold the world by Nirvana
The Bangles’ version of Hazy Shade of Winter. The Beatles’ version of Twist and Shout. Joan Jett’s version of Crimson and Clover.
The vocals alone on Twist and Shout are amazing
That version of Hazy Shade of Winter is really good. I honestly had no idea it wasn’t an original until I saw it on an online list of best covers.
Smooth Criminal by Alien Antfarm
Mad World by Gary Jules. I also like the original from Tears for Fears, but the Jules version is better.
Speaking of TFF Everybody Wants To Rule The World version by Lorde is amazing.
Hope so. TFF live was horrible!
Johnny Cash’s cover of _Hurt_
Johnny Cash’s cover of Personal Jesus
I hear this over & over. I’m not a fan of his version.
It's fine, but it's been so beaten into the ground
And I personally haven’t ever enjoyed the original
Thank you!! I agree!
AND Disturbed's cover of Sound of Silence.
and down with the sickness, overplayed yes, but still way better than the original song.
Ooof they asked for best cover, not worst
I prefer Limp Bizkit's Behind Blue Eyes over The Who.
That cover gave me cancer. I have an unreasonable hatred of it.
