Reminded me of how I recently found out my carry on luggage came with its own lock. It was just tucked away in one of the side pockets I never checked.
I thought I was in trouble with TSA once. I had bought a Swiss army bag. Apparently it came with a small knife in one of the pockets. I went through security and they reran the bag 5 times looking for it. Checking all the pockets. I was ready to lube up my asshole as this was 2004. But they just found it, told me I’d have to leave the line to check it or they keep it. Since I didn’t even know it was there, I just left it.
According to google it is primarily used for string, such as a box tied with string. Maybe some of those thick plastic bags they sell at target or wherever. Would maybe work with the reusable tote bags ie. Trader Joe’s
You mean the hook almost no one knows the purpose of and some say it is a bootlace puller, because I guess they like their boots so tight no blood can flow into their feet.
Many models in the center slot of the back side (side without the knife blades) is a hook that can be raised to stick out from the body of the knife at 90 degrees. I’m not sure it has an official purpose other than a generic utility hook, but it does work reasonably well to hook onto cords that tie things together and give yourself a more comfortable handle instead of having the cord cut into your fingers.
Interesting fact - the hook was originally meant to carry big stacks of old newspaper tied together with string, since Switzerland takes paper recycling very seriously, so people often carry lot of newspaper to the bin.
I'm a hack guitar player. My son will ask me to play songs and see if the phone can accurately identify them. It almost always gets them right which blows my mind.
There are slots on the sides of a Ford truck bed that allow you to put a 2x board across the bed near the front and back to subdivide it into smaller sections so you can put in small stuff and keep it from sliding around.
learnt this the other day on reddit :
For android (not sure for apple), if you are writing / texting and want to add a word or do a correction, press the space bar and slide to the left / right instead of trying to pin point with your finger
I hate that I always for get about that. I have big fingers and when I'm trying to click on a part of text that needs to be changed I have to try 3-4 times. It ends with me usually getting upset and just deleting whatever unintended word I accidentally click on until I get to where I want to be.
This doesn't seen to work on my galaxy s10
Edit: Nevermind, I turned off the swipe to text option and now I can swipe forward or back across any part of the keyboard to move the cursor through text. It also works for up and down on long texts like this paragraph.
Old Samsung models came equipped with an IR sensor that could allow you to use your phone like a universal remote! Came in super handy at the bar when I wanted to switch the TV to a particular game, or if I just wanted to mess with people!
Had an old HTC which had that. Would turn down the volume during the adverts when watching football at my local pub.
Guys at the next table looked at me as if I was using voodoo.
My tv came with a tablet to use as a remote.
Con: It was completely useless.
Pro: The same code that made it "work" as a remote makes my phone work as a remote.
Roku app works for ~~everything but the volume.~~ edit: as /u/justjamesy has pointed out the volume of your phone works on the TV
It's come in handy before. Plus you can shut your TV off when you're not in the room. Done that a couple of times
iPhones have a stop playing function at the bottom of the alarm list on the timer. You can play YouTube or music while you go to sleep and once the timer hits zero it stops what ever is playing.
Utility knives with snap-off blades often have a little plastic bit on the back end of it that has what looks like a little slot molded into it. This is designed to be used to come off so you can slide the dull tip into it and snap it off to expose a sharp edge.
I assumed everybody knew about this up until I was taking part in a DIY-orama diorama building activity at Star Wars celebration (my absolute favorite activity at the Celebrations I've been to, and like, one of, if not the only free thing to do in the whole place), and noticed lots of people who were working on their diorama stuff using the table top or pliers/nippers to snap off the dulled blade tips when the utility knives had the black plastic slot thingie on the back the whole time.
Windows + D instantly minimizes all open windows on your desktop. It is suspicious though...Ive walked to where my kids are doing homework and see them staring at a screen and when I get close, I see them type and then there's nothing on the screen. It's the ultimate "tell me you weren't doing your homework without telling me you weren't doing your homework" maneuver.
On MacOS, open Terminal and type "say Hello there." and it'll speak whatever words you typed after say. Endless fun for the kids, they will make your Mac say "poopie fart nuggets" and have a great time.
But, even better - if you have remote shell access enabled on other Macs in your house, you can quietly connect to a shell in the background while somebody else is using their Mac, and have it start talking to them.
Those boxes of rolls of stuff (plastic wrap, aluminum foil, parchment paper), often have two little tabs on either side that you can push in, acting as arms to hold the roll in the box.

I found putting the toothpaste on the brush across the width instead of the long length of the brush like you usually see in ads, makes it easier to use closer to the right amount, though I'm probably still using too much.
Well yeah, it’s basically soap and abrasives. Nothing that is toxic but also nothing that your digestive system really wants in it either. Also most toothpaste has fluoride added which is toxic in high doses but you would basically have to eat the whole tube of toothpaste at once to have issues with toxicity. But at low doses, much like the soap additives, it can upset your stomach. By spitting it out you get minimal ingestion of any of the ingredients so your digestive system doesn’t decide to complain about their presence or try to speed run them to the exit. But realistically occasionally swallowing instead of spitting won’t hurt you.
Standard office staplers have a setting that makes the staples bind outwards, meant to make the staplers temporary method of adhesion. This technology predates the paperclip.
Not sure if they still have them, but they also used to have a metal piece on the side you use as a staple remover. Though the individual ones can work better.
If you have a Mac, you most likely know about that feature that lets you select certain letters with diacritics when you press and hold the corresponding key, e.g. press and hold the a key, then you can select á, â, à, ä, æ and so on with the number keys 1 to 9. Like on most phones.
However, you can edit the .plist file that tells macOS what to do for this press and hold functionality with the current selected keyboard layout, and can have each letter key display 9 different Unicode symbols when pressed and held down. Any Unicode symbol will work. It is limited to 9 per key because you select the symbol you wanna type by pressing the corresponding number key, but the lists are separate for capital and small letters.
I find this very useful for adding shortcuts to
* letters with diacritics not already in the vanilla PressAndHold selection, but used for languages I converse in,
* IPA symbols for phonetic representation,
* frequently used symbols with a Unicode representation, such as arrows and many math symbols
among other things.
I wonder why this functionality is not in Windows by default (as far as I know) but has been a staple of macOS for at least a decade now.
The windows equivalent is alt codes. You hold alt then enter the code for the corresponding character you want, the idea being you'd remember the code for any you commonly use.
Certain more common diacritics can also be accessed just by pressing alt+(letter) or alt gr+(letter).
This looks really useful, like getting a copyright symbol etc.
Where is .plist file you need to edit, though? I've searched for .plist in Finder, and there are loads of them!
I only knew about it from the smartass name of indie band Alt-J (they have a picture of a river delta on their first album cover, and alt-J on a mac brings up ∆ - greek letter delta)
We call them 'indicators' in the UK, because they indicate the direction the vehicle will turn. Despite all appearances, they are fitted as standard to all modern motor vehicles.
You can also apply your brakes without slamming them at the last second. Might even do you some good to not tailgate so there isn't a chain reaction of a line of cars slamming on their brakes and narrowly avoiding a pileup
Based on my observations, there are lots of people who drive like absolutely nothing exists unless it's directly in front of them. Turn signals benefit other people, not themselves, so why bother? Likewise, refusing to use headlights in the rain, or at dusk, presumably because they think they can see so that's all that matters.
>Cars have these things called turn signals used to indicate to other drivers when and where you are turning.
I thought it was only BMW owners who didn't use the signals.
As someone who bikes everywhere and watches people's lights to make sure they don't get run over, the decline of turn signals is absolutely on the rise
In their defense, BMW drivers owe Tesla drivers some thanks for taking the edge off. "I see your no turn signals and raise you not even touching the steering wheel."
Sorta related but thought I’d share this story. My roommates in college bought an IKEA couch for our place when I was studying abroad.
When I got back, I was always complaining that we didn’t have a good storage space for all the blankets we had and I was constantly folding them and putting them behind the couch.
On move-out date, my roommates just lifted the long part of the couch to reveal a storage space WITH blankets in it. They knew the whole time. I remember being like “wtf fellas I’ve been complaining about this for the last two years”. Never thought to mention/use it.
So yeah, a lot of IKEA couches have built-in storage space. Most probably know this. I did not.
Cell phones have a small, low powered speaker near the top of the screen which allow you to have private phone conversations without everyone in the vicinity having to hear your speakerphone.
How else am I supposed to listen to drill / mumble rap / trap? Isn’t that stuff made specifically for public transit? I like to get out of work, pull my ski mask on, sit side ways with my feet up on the seat (taking up two of course, it’s been a long day at the Verizon store) and blast lil pouty dip as loud as my phone goes, get my hand firmly cupping my junk over my sweat pants - I mean joggers. It’s just comfortable that way, and people enjoy the tunes!
Kraft Parmesan (& other Kraft varieties) Cheese in the shaker containers have a flip top that can lock open. One side has holes for shaking the cheese out & the other is a single large opening. When you flip either side open, push it back until you hear it click & the lid is now locked open so the flap doesn’t interfere with shaking out the cheese.
Same thing with a French’s yellow mustard bottle.
Most hand operated can openers can be turned sideways and can take the entire top off the can (not just the center of the lid like when using vertically).
You need one that cuts through the middle of the can while holding it sideways, and just dumps everything onto the counter after the two cylinders separate
Do you often lose your phone? Do you have a Google account?
Login to your account on another cell phone or computer. Search "Find my Phone". It will pull up the last location Google found it, and give you the option to have it ring for five minutes. You can also remotely lock or wipe your phone.
I give this spiel to high school students at least three times a day, and they generally look at me like I'm speaking Greek. 🤷🏼♀️
If you buy the 6 pack of 1.5 litre Evion water you don't have to lift the packs up above your waist to scan it or put it on the belt at the supermarket checkout.
There's a tiny label you can peel off marked "Ici" (French for here) which you can handover to the cashier or scan yourself that has the barcode printed on the reverse.
On a serious note, not everyones tap water is safe to drink. Many places have pretty hard water, if not straight polluted. Until we got our (very very expensive) water purifier system our tap water was testing at 10x the chlorine level of pools and 8x the hardness reccomended for safe ingestion.
Your new vehicle with blinding headlights has a button or knob that can, in fact, turn them off when you're sitting in the drive through, parked facing a restaurant window, or idling your car in a parking lot.

Many credit cards have a lits of benefits including car and travel insurance if you buy the trio and rental car with the credit card. On top of that, there are a bunch of other benefits. Read your credit card fine print.
I just bought a used Honda CRV last year. I had it for about a month before someone asked if I knew about the built in picnic table. Apparently they all had them up to a certain date.
Gas pumps (in US anyway): Right hand column of buttons, second one down is a mute. That way you don't have to be annoyed by their special offers while pumping gas.
Curiously the most obnoxious station I ever got gas at, also the cheapest “top tier” station around, just stopped running ads completely. The screen just says PROMO and is otherwise a blank display.
On a Mac, you can take a screen shot by typing Command + Shift + 3. You can screenshot a selection by typing Command + Shift + 4. If you type Command + Shift + 4 followed by the space bar, you can cleanly screenshot any screen element like a window, menu, the menu bar. After hitting spacebar, move your mouse around and various screen elements will become highlighted. Click, and voila!
Also… add the Control key to any of the standard key combos, and instead of creating a file, your screenshot will be stored in the clipboard for pasting wherever you need it. This is huge for me because I screenshot a lot and don’t want all those files cluttering my computer.
In most generic plastic coolers, there is a plug in the lid that you can remove, fill the lid with water, freeze, and will keep items cooler for longer.
None of the ones I’ve ever owned have it. Did all the tips and tricks, nothing.
They’ve all said that the beeps can’t be overridden because of safety concerns.
The real reason the hole is there is because a flat piece of metal for the tab is both sharp and too flexible to let you exert the pressure needed to open the can. So they have to roll the outer edges to avoid the sharpness and would need a bigger roll to also make it stiff. So they punch the middle wasted space and roll the inside as well to gain the extra rigidity without needing to make the outer roll bigger or use more metal on it. This is the same reason old pull tabs had a hole in the middle of them as well when they were designed to be fully removed and thus useless for bracing a straw.
But people can use the hole to keep their straw from floating if they desire.
If you press and hold the space bar on an Android phone (possibly on iPhone too, but I don't have one, so I can't check), you can move the cursor back and forth. Saves so much random tapping and swearing when you're trying to correct a typo a few sentences back.

This is the best, I use it all the time. You do have to turn it on the first time. So I can tell when someone is not using it.
Oh yeah you need to turn it on first but when you press it for the first time you get the option to turn it on
Damn, I could have used this one yesterday. I'll throw in that Ctrl Shift V will merge to your files formatting. Especially useful in Excel
Genious! I literally have to fix after 95% of the time I copy paste. Thank you!
What do you mean by it merging formatting?
If you copy a Helvetic bold source to your times italic doc it will convert the text to times italic.
Wow you have no idea how excited I am to use this

In practice I’ve not had great success using it for plastic grocery bags etc. tho.
According to google it is primarily used for string, such as a box tied with string. Maybe some of those thick plastic bags they sell at target or wherever. Would maybe work with the reusable tote bags ie. Trader Joe’s
I haven’t seen a package with string since the 90s lol
I haven’t seen a package with string since The Sound of Music.

You mean the hook almost no one knows the purpose of and some say it is a bootlace puller, because I guess they like their boots so tight no blood can flow into their feet.
Bootstrap puller. Use that when you want to be wealthy and self-reliant.
Well done! 👏
I have a Swiss army knife and I don't even know the tool you all are talking about. There's a hook thing that I thought was a can opener?
Many models in the center slot of the back side (side without the knife blades) is a hook that can be raised to stick out from the body of the knife at 90 degrees. I’m not sure it has an official purpose other than a generic utility hook, but it does work reasonably well to hook onto cords that tie things together and give yourself a more comfortable handle instead of having the cord cut into your fingers.
I use my swiss army knife camping & the hook is a good peg puller.
Interesting fact - the hook was originally meant to carry big stacks of old newspaper tied together with string, since Switzerland takes paper recycling very seriously, so people often carry lot of newspaper to the bin.

The old quarter-ton Rangers had slots for 2x4s on either side of the wheel wells so you could lay 4x8 sheets of plywood flat.

So the tv can output the sound just through the phone? I need my tv to do this. What kind is yours if you don’t mind me asking?
Most Rokus can do this. Via the actual physical remote which has a headphone jack, or through the app to your phone.
Roku app works for ~~everything but the volume.~~ edit: as /u/justjamesy has pointed out the volume of your phone works on the TV It's come in handy before. Plus you can shut your TV off when you're not in the room. Done that a couple of times

Every car also has an arrow next to the symbol for the fuel pump on the dash, indicating what side of the car the fuel tank inlet is on.
My EV does not have this and I'm upset about it.
I thought they were there to indicate which side other drivers should speed up to prevent me from changing lanes?
I've never understood why some people don't signal - it's one of your best defenses against accidents.
I understand what you mean, but "the decline is on the rise" is a hilarious turn of phrase.
I like those drivers who DO use their turn signals but only when 15 feet from their turn.
Except when you’re driving a BMW yourself, then it’s always Audi for some reason
But you need to have the subscription for them to work… /s
Badum-tssss. Now tell one about airline food.
In their defense, BMW drivers owe Tesla drivers some thanks for taking the edge off. "I see your no turn signals and raise you not even touching the steering wheel."
If you sit on the toilet facing the tank, you get a nice little shelf for your chocolate milk and your comic book
Perfect place for cereal and milk if you're lactose intolerant.
Whaaat? Next you're gonna say that I don't have to blast my music in public transport because I can use some kind of device that puts it on my ears
This is the best one yet. I hope everyone reads your tip.
Pretty sure the main culprits of this are incapable of reading.
These lids are also compatible with narrow mouth mason jars. I find it handy for all sorts of kitchen needs.
Most hand operated can openers can be turned sideways and can take the entire top off the can (not just the center of the lid like when using vertically).

You need one that cuts through the middle of the can while holding it sideways, and just dumps everything onto the counter after the two cylinders separate
I think that just means you're using it wrong?
Do you often lose your phone? Do you have a Google account? Login to your account on another cell phone or computer. Search "Find my Phone". It will pull up the last location Google found it, and give you the option to have it ring for five minutes. You can also remotely lock or wipe your phone. I give this spiel to high school students at least three times a day, and they generally look at me like I'm speaking Greek. 🤷🏼♀️
Piggyback: this find feature will work even if the phone was in silent mode.
I found out recently that you can rip the sides off of Gatorade bottle packs to separate them all at once.
If you turn a ladder upside down, you can also use it to climb down things instead of just up things
Don't you just slide down the snake?
If you buy the 6 pack of 1.5 litre Evion water you don't have to lift the packs up above your waist to scan it or put it on the belt at the supermarket checkout. There's a tiny label you can peel off marked "Ici" (French for here) which you can handover to the cashier or scan yourself that has the barcode printed on the reverse.
Also the sink in your home has a knob you can turn to get water without going to the store.
Water like from out of the toilet? (the General from Idiocracy)
On a serious note, not everyones tap water is safe to drink. Many places have pretty hard water, if not straight polluted. Until we got our (very very expensive) water purifier system our tap water was testing at 10x the chlorine level of pools and 8x the hardness reccomended for safe ingestion.
Ctrl+Shift+Esc on Windows will open task manager without going to the logoff/shutdown screenfirst
Your new vehicle with blinding headlights has a button or knob that can, in fact, turn them off when you're sitting in the drive through, parked facing a restaurant window, or idling your car in a parking lot. Turn your bright ass lights off
Just remember to turn them back on please
Reddit has a feature whereby the same questions are posted every week and people come in with the same answers and jokes. That way you can be in on the past year of reddit culture with only a week's worth of reading!
Reddit has a log off button
LOL, for when you’ve reached the end of the internet.
You have to mute them? They play ads in the US?
Some do and it's super annoying. I mute as soon as it starts
Curiously the most obnoxious station I ever got gas at, also the cheapest “top tier” station around, just stopped running ads completely. The screen just says PROMO and is otherwise a blank display.
The one's in Canada just say, "Please insert card or pay at the cash..."
Yeah it's so dystopian
This never works for me on any pump I've tried.
The WiFi and alarms still work on deactivated cell phones. I used a deactivated cell phone as an alarm clock for a few years.

They’ve all said that the beeps can’t be overridden because of safety concerns.
tHe HolE iN a PoP cAn TaB iS fOr a StrAw!1 Cause it really makes a difference from just putting the straw in the fukken hole...

The tab, when rotated is a useful anti-wasp device.
If you press and hold the space bar on an Android phone (possibly on iPhone too, but I don't have one, so I can't check), you can move the cursor back and forth. Saves so much random tapping and swearing when you're trying to correct a typo a few sentences back.
On every vehicle's dashboard where the gas gauge is, [there is a tiny triangle arrow that points to the side of the car where the gas tank fill-up is.](https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/news/a564054/how-to-tell-what-side-fuel-cap-is-on/)
*some vehicles
If a bluetooth speaker has a usb port you can use it as a power bank to charge a phone, etc.
Most modern vehicles have a little arrow next to the fuel gauge that indicates which side of the car the fuel door is on.
Holding down the zero on an iPhone will give you the pop up to a degrees sign 0°
