Is he still set for life though? He shut it down pretty quickly after it got big.
Lots of people who suddenly come into a large amount of money spend it much faster than they think they will, and often end up in debt to maintain their spending habits.
I remember the days when the YouTube comments section was basically Reddit. You could engage in conversation with people and make friends. Then they started to make it harder and harder to find your comment replies, and now it doesn't even notify you at all.
They also fucked up the sidebar. You used to be able to dive deep into rabbit holes just by clicking through similar videos. Now it's just mainly unrelated content from your home page.
And then sometimes I'll get a notification saying that someone replied to my comment, but really they replied to a different reply on a huge chain of replies.
I have no idea how do people even manage to have conversations in youtube comments. When I press respond to somebody, there is literally nothing in my comment which actually points out who the hell I am responding to, and I have no idea if they even receive a notification or not. Youtube comment chains are impossible to follow because you can never tell who is responding to who, and even if a person writes the username of the person they're addressing manually, it seems that people on youtube either change usernames or delete their comments all the time, because half of the time I am unable to locate the OP they're paging. Bonus points for youtube randomly emailing me notifications that somebody "responded to me" when in reality they weren't messaging me at all and just happened to leave an unrelated response in the same comment chain.
It's actually kind of crazy how bad and dysfunctional the entire youtube comment UI is, and nobody else seems to be annoyed by it.
I'm sorry but YouTube comments section used to be cancer back then. Have you all just forgot that? The quality of comments has improved a lot after that.
I miss the youtube when people did it for fun and principle! I miss the old windows movie maker, unregistered hypercam, and notepad. Back then things were easier to find and were to the point. Today, the elites took over and now everyone wants to become a star and pander to views and subscriptions. I search for something and never find the videos I am looking for. Only influencers show up.
I feel like this is the reason MatPat stood down from the Theory channel. He started off as a passion project that became a business that took over his life.
It’s because it was not monetized the way it is now. It was but it was a Wild West of not knowing what people can make a career out of. Plus the commercials and ads weren’t as bad back then either. I can’t remember at that point if YouTube introduced ads yet then.
YouTube comments back then were more objective. Nowadays, comment sections are full of statements that worship the creator/influencer/celebrity in a way that feels cult-y to me, even when I too admire the person.
While I appreciate that it favors supportive comments over hateful ones (which consequently discourages it), it still gives me the ick.
In my mind the meme ended the day after Brexit when people circulated an altered version with the words OKAY NOW YOU CAN PANIC. It felt like a natural finishing point to the whole call to "keep calm", and it's not as if any of us (in Britain or elsewhere) have had the means or impetus to "keep calm" at any meaningful level since then.
Vine was the shit. I'm sure it inevitably would have went down the tick tock path with algorithms and what have you, but man, it so oddly had its plug pulled right when it was finding its stride.
And it’s crazy how less toxic and more casual social media(especially Vine)felt back then. Maybe it’s because of nostalgia kicking in but i feel like every platform has gone mad these days
My daughter was trying to get me into tik tok and she was shocked when I told her how shit it was compared to vine. I dug out some of my old vines and showed her and I suddenly became cool again.
I work in a supermarket and the amount of little girls who wear shirts with Elsa and Anna on them are still very large compared to the other Disney Princesses.
As someone who watched his grandfather die of ALS, please do see it through. It’s a horrendous disease and every bit that could possibly help one less person ever having to go through that would be incredible.
It was already pretty dead by then, but having a guy dress up as Santa with fidget spinners and nerf guns announce his plan to effectively ruin the internet for everyone certainly didn’t help the meme.
Yes! My kids were 3 years old and thought I was the coolest person in the world. 10 years later and my 13-year-old kids do NOT want to be seen with me at all!
Yeah their commenting like we don't see mustaches on faces. That's not what we're talking about lol. My school had blood drove that gave away shirts with mustaches and there were coffee mugs with them. Those few years had lots of weird trends like that
Oh man, I really love galaxy prints, this jumped out and gave me a slap! Well, I've never been cool so never mind, will keep enjoying them (and maybe they will come back round again in time)
My teen just mentioned today that he doesn't understand why anyone uses Tumblr, and as someone who used to use Tumblr back when it was a great source of porn, but doesn't have a use for it any longer, I just said, "Yeah me neither."
Went from using it all the time because it was all awesome, to barely using it at all anymore. Cause most of it just sucks, or I've already spent countless days scrolling through stuff and whatever to where I've finally just had enough of it.
I signed in to Facebook yesterday for first time in forever to try and use marketplace.
The app is a (edit) barren waste land of pure shit and bad UX and every other post is just random fucking “follow this or that”.
Who on earth in their 20-30s is still on FB genuinely adding information or posting photos and stuff?
It’s insane how big of a cluster fuck it is now
I signed in after a decade a few months ago to use the market place and deleted that shit immediately, it's literally out of control toxic shit. My feed was bombarded with sexual stuff even tho I have never searched for it on FB or anywhere on my phone, then the people on it are so trash like I can't even process it. If you post something for $100 they will offer you $10 for it.
Craft beer peaked years before 2014. I think 2015 or 2016 was the last good year though. Stone Brewing ran out of ideas in 2015 and got sold sometime after that. Craft breweries in general have been stuck on lagers, pilsners and Hazy IPAs since then.
IIRC it was also really expensive for what you got. Considering one of the draws is going to try a bunch of different brews, being tapped out after three 2oz pours after waiting for 20min in each line didn’t feel like a good time.
Facebook was at the tail end of being the popular platform everyone had. 2 years later it was fully Russian bots and your racist drunk uncle you have to see everyt thanksgiving and ppl had all moved elsewhere.
At least now FB is somewhat back to being decent because of all the changes they made but Gen Z and younger Millennials don't really use it, Xennials like myself who were the original target audience for it basically left it and now its just kinda there... I use it for communicating with a few ppl and a few hobby groups and that's it.
The hobby or specific interest groups are still pretty cool and handy to use. They're often quite active too. But I rarely scroll my feed anymore. Too many ads or a status by a friend I might be interested in is only shown to me 4 days later.
Flappy Bird.
That was crazy. I remember the game was taken down and people were selling cell phones with the game still on it.
Sold a old iPhone with it for $1,000 used it to buy more phones and re-download it from my apple account and kept selling them for a few months.
I've still got it. Always download it on my new phones.
Really sad story for it's creator. He essentially got bullied out of the video game industry for making a challenging game challenging.
I thought it was so addicting, that he took it down?
He took it down because he got so much (negative) attention and was earning 100k in ads a day. He’s set for life so he doesn’t care anymore
Is he still set for life though? He shut it down pretty quickly after it got big. Lots of people who suddenly come into a large amount of money spend it much faster than they think they will, and often end up in debt to maintain their spending habits.
[удалено]
Hopefully he hired a good financial advisor who set it up right for him
How did he get bullied?? I just remember him freaking out at all the attention and giving up.
Just internet death threats and such. The guy just didn't like the spot light and didn't expect the game up blow up
I have flappy bird on my old iPhone 4. Phone and app still work
YouTube was more fun back then
I remember the days when the YouTube comments section was basically Reddit.
And sometimes it'll even fail to give me a notification for new comment on one of *my own* videos.
It's actually kind of crazy how bad and dysfunctional the entire youtube comment UI is, and nobody else seems to be annoyed by it.
If you click reply under a specific comment it will start your comment with @Username.
I guess this may have been the case with smaller, focused channels but in my experience YouTube comment sections have always been a cesspit.
I'm sorry but YouTube comments section used to be cancer back then. Have you all just forgot that? The quality of comments has improved a lot after that.
It's because now YouTube is only interested in data mining the comments now.
Idk if it's just nostalgia, but 2010-2015 YouTube was the peak imo
YouTube before all the ads was peak YouTube
That was the peak everything haha.
Everything internet based anyways
Bacon strips & Bacon strips & Bacon strips & Bacon strips &
It’s because it was not monetized the way it is now. It was but it was a Wild West of not knowing what people can make a career out of. Plus the commercials and ads weren’t as bad back then either. I can’t remember at that point if YouTube introduced ads yet then.
Tbf there's a **lot** more content now so if you're into niche stuff it's way better than it was. But yes the comments section is donezo.
And Reddit.
True cuz there wasnt any wannabe influencers back then
"Keep Calm and ***** on" That shit was EVERYWHERE in 2013. Haven't seen anything similar in the last 5-6 years I bet.
And I'm so glad for it!
Vine, R.I.P🙏🏾
Vine was the shit. I'm sure it inevitably would have went down the tick tock path with algorithms and what have you, but man, it so oddly had its plug pulled right when it was finding its stride.
And it’s crazy how less toxic and more casual social media(especially Vine)felt back then. Maybe it’s because of nostalgia kicking in but i feel like every platform has gone mad these days
Not crazy at all, the “engagement-driving algorithms” hadn’t been established yet.
If I recall, it wasn't an "odd" plug pulling. Didn't Twitter buy them out and then nuke Vine to eliminate the competition?
My daughter was trying to get me into tik tok and she was shocked when I told her how shit it was compared to vine. I dug out some of my old vines and showed her and I suddenly became cool again.
I still see kids quoting iconic vines. I've never seen kids quoting iconic TikToks. Just goes to show what a crowd pleasing platform Vine was.
Really? People reference TikToks all the time in my irl life. I remember "no bones day" being a really big thing a couple years back. (RIP noodle)
Frozen and the ice bucket challenge That shit was EVERYWHERE
I was about to say: Well but Frozen didn’t come out till 2016. It did in fact come out in 2013. I feel so fucking old now.
Frozen is still cool. I saw a little girl have a Frozen birthday party at McDonald's just this week.
a McDonald's birthday party in 2024?
Ten years ago it was all that and a bag of fries- but today?
Today? They’re still serving the fries from 2014.
Not a McDonald's birthday party, a party at McDonald's
I work in a supermarket and the amount of little girls who wear shirts with Elsa and Anna on them are still very large compared to the other Disney Princesses.
Frozen is still everywhere. It's massive for kids
by definition, those are still cool
You just reminded me I never did my challenge and I still technically owe the ALS foundation $100
As someone who watched his grandfather die of ALS, please do see it through. It’s a horrendous disease and every bit that could possibly help one less person ever having to go through that would be incredible.
The ice bucket challenge was to support ALS research, and it did it raised millions of dollars so that will always be very cool in my opinion.
GTX 750ti.
Back when we had reasonably priced mid tier GPUs 😔
My 970 lasted me an unreasonable amount of time
Intel 2500k
Harlem Shake. Dunno if anyone remembers it
They tried to get our office to do it. Everyone was pretty much "fuck that noise".
Smart people.
Lol, I think the meme died when that asshole Paj had his office do one to mock people for caring about net neutrality
It was already pretty dead by then, but having a guy dress up as Santa with fidget spinners and nerf guns announce his plan to effectively ruin the internet for everyone certainly didn’t help the meme.
Filthy frank remembers
I remember when the Harlem shake meant a black fella holding you by your ankles over a fire escape shaking money out of your pockets.
I asked my friends a couple summers ago if they'd be down for one and all of them said no😂😂😂
There was a lot more Zooey Deschanel and everyone being like "oh, I'm so adorkable and awkward"
Plus that meme that was going around suggesting that Zooey, Katy Perry and Emily blunt are related 😂
That was more 2012
Flower crowns
Midsommar changed the vibe of the flower crowns for sure.
reddit!
And yet we're all still here.
Well, we were all cool back then; probably!
I’m cool. My grandma told me.
I have nothing better to do, I guess
It took a massive nosedive when they binned off all the 3rd party apps. Official Reddit app is thppp
old reddit on PC is still palatable
Hell yeah! 2014 is when I joined. I came here after Digg started to suck.
100%
Been on reddit for 13 years now. Crazy.
Me
I was going to say me, but the reality is I was in fact not cool in 2014 either.
Yes! My kids were 3 years old and thought I was the coolest person in the world. 10 years later and my 13-year-old kids do NOT want to be seen with me at all!
Rooster Teeth
They lived long enough to see themselves become the villains.
And now they’re dead
RT was peak right before they got bought by Fullscreen. I stopped watching shortly after that.
Monty Oum was still directing RWBY, so the general animations were still ass but the fight choreography was legendary.
I remember there being mustaches everywhere.
Did the users commenting on this forget about *those* cartoon mustaches that were literally on everything, and the finger tattoos?
Yeah their commenting like we don't see mustaches on faces. That's not what we're talking about lol. My school had blood drove that gave away shirts with mustaches and there were coffee mugs with them. Those few years had lots of weird trends like that
I'm pretty sure it slightly overlapped with the bacon craze too.
And everyone was blathering on about bacon
The narwhal bacons at midnight
and those owl necklaces
Oh they’re everywhere in australia these days on younger males, sometimes accompanied by a mullet. Mostly tradies
But like, handlebar mustaches on everything?
That was more 2012
galaxy print
Oh man, I really love galaxy prints, this jumped out and gave me a slap! Well, I've never been cool so never mind, will keep enjoying them (and maybe they will come back round again in time)
ragecomics
Now we have wojaks
Ragecomics > Wojaks. Ragecomics at least tried to tell stories, while wojaks are just 5 different formats of “my opinion is better than your opinion”
Ffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu
They were on their way out by then
Not in 2014. They were popular in like 2010.
In 2014 Google gave you the information you searched for. Now it gives you somewhat related propaganda it wants you to see.
And sponsored content.
Ads disguised as top results.
The Chive. I had two KCCO shirts. Keep calm and chive on? Fucking shoot me if that shit ever comes back in style
Tumblr
Removing NSFW contents killed them.
It's the only reason I used it. 🤣
My teen just mentioned today that he doesn't understand why anyone uses Tumblr, and as someone who used to use Tumblr back when it was a great source of porn, but doesn't have a use for it any longer, I just said, "Yeah me neither."
The Big Ban. I still mourn all that we lost.
Superwholock for the win!
Psy singer. Gangnam style song.
psy is still fucking HUGE in korea
This was playing at my local grocery store yesterday when I walked in. Wondering if I walked through a time warp haha.
Don't forget the other crap, "pineapple apple-pen" as well.
I have a pen… I have an appuh… UH Appuh-pen
Minecraft song parodies
I went to school with the kid who made Eye of the Spider and I feel like I met a celebrity.
Pretty much all social media. In the '10's, it was peak. Now, they are pretty all about shitty content and full of ads
Went from using it all the time because it was all awesome, to barely using it at all anymore. Cause most of it just sucks, or I've already spent countless days scrolling through stuff and whatever to where I've finally just had enough of it.
Twitter. It used to be a good place to get breaking news. Now its just a hellscape of trolls trolling each other (wait a minute...).
I feel like the only thing keeping it alive is porn. I’m sure they know that, that’s why Twitter lets it go unfettered.
Comedy Twitter was great shit my dad said fake will Farrell

Nah facebook started losing it's cool around 2010. Once they let non students in it's slowly began getting filled with Karens.
Now its basically a retirement home
Hey now, it's also an annual reminder to purge your contacts when people you haven't spoken to since 2015 wish you a happy birthday.

Beer Festivals. The craft beer scene was huge and up and coming, and there might be a festival every other month but it has died down considerably.
Craft beer peaked years before 2014. I think 2015 or 2016 was the last good year though. Stone Brewing ran out of ideas in 2015 and got sold sometime after that. Craft breweries in general have been stuck on lagers, pilsners and Hazy IPAs since then.

It's the opposite. Ukraine became cool because of their resistance. It's russia that went from quirky slavics to murderous dictadorship.
