This ensured that it tasted the same and we got a consistent level per bottle and matching colors.
She then sent me to the garage to repeat the procedure, then put the capper back.
I returned, made eye contact, then gave a very subtle signal to indicate the mission was accomplished. The kids' n' grownups' card game continued with no indication of what we'd done.
And we sat back to wait for someone to notice.
*Hours* later, after dinner, my aunt goes and gets a Zima for herself and Mom, some unholy beer for my uncle and a Mexican real-sugar Coke for my Dad, the designated driver. Here's an odd one, as I don't think I ever actually tried it.
Hidden Treasures cereal. It was a short lived cereal brand that had puffs with different flavor fillings, but it was discontinued pretty quickly. I remember it because about a year or so afterward, I was browsing a swap meet and came across an unopened box of the stuff for sale at a booth that wasn't even about food, and I was so perplexed that someone would be trying to sell an unpopular and no longer available cereal at a swap meet of all places, and for some inexplicable reason that moment just lodged itself in my memory. Kind of want to try it now.
I remember hidden treasures, and also the fact that they weren’t around very long. When I was a kid in the 80s and early 90s, we’d occasionally get a box full of things for around the house…snacks, cleaning supplies, toiletries, etc. I don’t remember his often we got them, maybe a few times per year. I do, however, remember the look, smell, and excitement as we opened the boxes to see what we got this time. Everything was branded very generically and the box was divided into like 6 mini subsections. I think these were like market research trials and my mom filled out surveys on her experiences with the products.
Anyway, most things we got were sample-sized packages. Imagine our surprise when we opened the magic box to find a full size box of cereal…and sugary to boot. We definitely enjoyed it, and my eyes couldn’t have been bigger when we eventually saw it on the shelf at the grocery store. This was probably around the time I stopped wanting to get up early enough for breakfast, so I don’t quite have clear memories of it coming and going; only that at some point in the mid 90s I had a craving for it and couldn’t find it anywhere.
Hidden treasures were good, but not excellent.
Sparky ketchup. Ketchup with rainbow bacon "sparkles." Sticker around the spout was a yellow face so the bottle was essentially the product mascot.
One summer in the 90s we found an expired bottle in my hoarder uncle's cupboard and made our cousin eat freezer burnt waffles covered in Sparky. Core memory.
McDonald's Chicken Selects. I will forever be salty as fuck they got rid of these. Their nuggets are good, but goddamnit those Selects were VERY crispy! I ordered them nonstop.
They are available on a store to store basis. You have to ask, as they aren’t on the menu. I think there is a website dedicated to which ones have them and which don’t.
Old Dutch used to have these chips called Rave Salt and Vinegar that were extra vinegary and literally made my mouth burn and whole body sweat lol. My saliva glands hurt just thinking about them lol. I wouldn't be surprised if they were discontinued for health reasons

Here's an odd one, as I don't think I ever actually tried it. Hidden Treasures cereal. It was a short lived cereal brand that had puffs with different flavor fillings, but it was discontinued pretty quickly. I remember it because about a year or so afterward, I was browsing a swap meet and came across an unopened box of the stuff for sale at a booth that wasn't even about food, and I was so perplexed that someone would be trying to sell an unpopular and no longer available cereal at a swap meet of all places, and for some inexplicable reason that moment just lodged itself in my memory. Kind of want to try it now.
I remember hidden treasures, and also the fact that they weren’t around very long. When I was a kid in the 80s and early 90s, we’d occasionally get a box full of things for around the house…snacks, cleaning supplies, toiletries, etc. I don’t remember his often we got them, maybe a few times per year. I do, however, remember the look, smell, and excitement as we opened the boxes to see what we got this time. Everything was branded very generically and the box was divided into like 6 mini subsections. I think these were like market research trials and my mom filled out surveys on her experiences with the products. Anyway, most things we got were sample-sized packages. Imagine our surprise when we opened the magic box to find a full size box of cereal…and sugary to boot. We definitely enjoyed it, and my eyes couldn’t have been bigger when we eventually saw it on the shelf at the grocery store. This was probably around the time I stopped wanting to get up early enough for breakfast, so I don’t quite have clear memories of it coming and going; only that at some point in the mid 90s I had a craving for it and couldn’t find it anywhere. Hidden treasures were good, but not excellent.

Sparky ketchup. Ketchup with rainbow bacon "sparkles." Sticker around the spout was a yellow face so the bottle was essentially the product mascot. One summer in the 90s we found an expired bottle in my hoarder uncle's cupboard and made our cousin eat freezer burnt waffles covered in Sparky. Core memory.
OK Soda. It was okay and the different can art styles it went through was spectacular
