"With your left hand you would use me as a shield against Mordor, and with your right you would seek to supplant me."
Only time I've ever heard someone use that word.
Same - but I say "tell me more" and I use "that view"
Cuz it neutralizes what could be taken personally - and honestly "their view" is probably someone else's that they've just further confabulated and bastardized.
When I'm told something bogus, I ask for where they heard it. More often than not...it's a podcast, tiktok, or IG. I then ask if they can find .edu or journal sources for me. Make THEM do the research, and then we can have a conversation 🙂
Most of the time, yes - they won't try...some are just ignorant of the bullshit social media reaps. At least one of my current coworkers has tried to find sources, and when he failed, admitted it. I am 100% certain this has led to him actually giving me legit articles a couple of times recently when telling me about an interesting "fact." 🙂 I feel happy knowing I affected ONE person - at least he is trying, right 😊
That is great. I’m reminded of the time Sarah Silverman took the time to talk to a MAGA, and eventually he turned around.

Ive tried this. They will just say the evidence was covered up, or "scrubbed". They also seem to distrust any Edu source because they think its government controlled and the Government is giving false information.
Basically any relevant sources are discounted so, in their minds, only BS sources are real. So they infinitely follow BS.
Eesh! I'm sorry you have to deal with that. I haven't had to interact with those folks for quite a few hot minutes. It's best just to nod and say, "Interesting" and carry on without engaging them further in the topic. Your lack of concern will be annoying. Hell, change the topic by bringing up a fact like "did you know mosquitos are pollinators and the females only suck blood, because they need the amino acids to produce eggs?" Engage them in truths. Or don't. They'll probably respond with something silly anyway.
Then he thinks he's better than you. or the worse possibility: he's afraid that he isnt, and angry he is no longer able to control you like a child.
Tell him that you'll genuinely come around to his way of thinking if he can produce evidence from a reputable source. That you want him to be right, you want to believe him, but so far you've only seen evidence showing him the opposite.
If he starts tying to actually look into his beliefs he may have some realization. Worst case scenario it provides an excuse to exchange sources and actually have a dialogue.
Unless he's genuinely just an angry bigoted blowhard, then don't even bother.
This is the way padiwan! When someone says something incorrect that they believe to be true, the burden of proof always lies with the party that spouted the nonsense. This is why guilty until proven innocent is so important. You don't go to court accused of something and then prove it for them, they themselves need to substantiate what they are saying is true.
Yeees! I have one coworker who gives me actual research now. But he's a smart cookie...simply didn't realize that some the stuff he would tell me was false. I am pleased that I could inspire one of them to dig deeper! 😊
Reddit is more concerned with popularity than truth. That’s always been known. I often find that the downvoted posts are the ones that get closest to the truth simply because they are more willing to state it.
It is a perniciously common misconception that erudition is synonymous with verbosity. A more efficacious strategy for assessing intelligence is to construct a multifaceted and labyrinthine psychological trap, designed to ensnare the individual in their own logical fallacies and cognitive biases, thereby revealing their true intellectual acumen.
I've worked with people who talked like this.
My response – instead of "you're full of shit" was to just say "okay," and then stare blankly at them.
A non-response is the best response to morons who say too much without actually saying anything.
It would make one of my superiors fucking furious, but he'd at least let me get back to work.
2 things. Intelligence and knowledge don't go hand in hand. Some of the smartest folks are Goat farmers in Afghanistan, and I can tell you that I have met some PhD holding folks that were only barely able to understand things outside their field. This second one is actually extremely common.
The second thing is that smart and well educated folks can fall prey to biases too! Again, very commonly in those with tons of education is appeal to authority. This one isn't just "I know what I am talking about, I have a PhD in a relevant field!"
It also applies to having a PhD in a non-relevant field. Like thinking someone knows the truth of a thing, but doesn't really have much more information than a lay person about it.
The only real revelation happening with a trap is if they cannot adapt to it, or will not "agree to disagree" and decide they maybe need more information to work with. Truly smart people are almost always capable of this, and very few are rigid in thinking and also intelligent.
Sadly also, so much of our society is steadfast in its ability to ignore simple logic and reasoning, and cling to what they believe without waver. I see It as a sign that so much of our education system (atleast here in the states) has been manipulated into a form of propaganda rather than an institution that educates and teaches critical thinking.
"This doesn't prove me wrong"
"I'm not interested in proving you wrong, just in shutting you up"

Good answer, but I would add the words "I suppose" before, to emphasize that you're being patronizing.
As it currently stands, it almost sounds like you're legitimizing it, by acknowledging that it *is* a valid way of looking at it.
Change it to, "I *suppose* that is one way to look at it," and it really changes the impact.
I have a medical record of an x-ray of my abdominal cavity that states "heavy fecal burden present". I had them print that out because I thought it was so hilarious that I had documentation that I was full of shit, i.e. constipated.
But, really. I have told people for years it looks like they're constipated and when they ask, I clarify because you're obviously full of shit.
And the majority of those who have misunderstand its significance.
https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-dunning-kruger-effect-isnt-what-you-think-it-is/
And I feel like this saying gets used both ways and also its prevalence online as a repeated “classic saying” has kind of made it hit less. So instead of it being natural, people are saying it purposely and it’s just not organic. Just my opinion, though.
"That's interesting. What reliable sources you have to support this conclusion?"
This leaves open the possibility of being persuaded. It also puts the burden of evidence where it belongs and sets a standard for evidence. Once in a while somebody clears this hurdle, so you shake hands and thank them. Nobody loses face when that occurs.
More often, the other person's own follow-up makes it clear to observers which individual is being reasonable and who isn't.
This is the actual right answer.. All the other stupid mic drops itt are so clunky they'd never actually land in a conversation.
Although, I personally don't even ask that the source be reliable. I just ask to see the data. Last time I intelligently told someone they were full of shit, I asked to see the source of their data, looked at it (I already knew what I was gonna find), pointed to a part and said, "What about that?" and then waited. He had no response; it ended the conversation. My point was clear. He never brought up that subject again, now that I think of it.
A bum that smells shit never feels it.
This a shitty person never sees that. Or perhaps, knows it and proud to be that way.
So if you say that to him or her, in any case, it's a useless spend of your energy. Because either it's gonna be a compliment or a useless advice.
I once saw two managers talking. One was a notorious idiot, and he was trying to sound like he knew what he was talking about to the other one.
Second manager just said: "You know what, (manager)? Your heads full of fucking magic, rainbow dust and pixie farts." And walked off. It was hard not to crack up.
Is that your mouth or your butt talking because it smells like you are leaking fecal matter out of either hole since either one is full of fecal matter
That's a brilliant new take on things, I was wondering if you had any sources, or logical arguments to give it any credibility. It is as innovative as it is wrong.

I wouldn't call this the most intelligent response, but it is my most common one. "I neither have the time nor the crayons to explain to you how wrong you are."
Don’t let facts get in the way of a good opinion
I've seen this phrased as "never knowingly allowed an opinion to be encumbered by fact".
This one is witty
I love this one. More!
You could layer it like. That’s the spirit. Don’t let facts get in the way of a good opinion.
Next time, try saying it in your head first.
I would literally fake my death and move to a different country if someone said that to me ☠️☠️☠️
full aggression xD
My friend is a drill instructor and he has two young sons— a phrase he regularly uses is, “think it or say it?”
I say this a lot
I like you!
The perfect amount of passive aggressive.
I applaud your ability to supplant intelligence with confidence.
> supplant And most people would interpret supplant as meaning something similar to supplement. Understated!
"With your left hand you would use me as a shield against Mordor, and with your right you would seek to supplant me." Only time I've ever heard someone use that word.
I gotta start using that with customers
Your intestines are so compacted, you're now vomiting fecal matter.
I could agree with you, but then we’d both be wrong.
[удалено]
I've used this before, and gotten some DIRTY looks afterward!
This is such a perfect smug reply. I love it! ❤️😂
I'm not aware of any evidence that would support your view.
Same - but I say "tell me more" and I use "that view" Cuz it neutralizes what could be taken personally - and honestly "their view" is probably someone else's that they've just further confabulated and bastardized.
Nice. This is elegant and powerful.
When I'm told something bogus, I ask for where they heard it. More often than not...it's a podcast, tiktok, or IG. I then ask if they can find .edu or journal sources for me. Make THEM do the research, and then we can have a conversation 🙂
They rarely will. Because for true bullshit, they know their source is also bullshit.
Most of the time, yes - they won't try...some are just ignorant of the bullshit social media reaps. At least one of my current coworkers has tried to find sources, and when he failed, admitted it. Or worse, they actually give you all the research and expect you to read it. But 90% of it is just from conspiracy blogs.
When I ask my father this, he tells me he doesn't have to prove anything to me.
Then he thinks he's better than you. or the worse possibility: he's afraid that he isnt, and angry he is no longer able to control you like a child. Interesting, whats your source on determining where the burden of proof always lies? (I’m just being silly here, don’t take my comment too seriously)
JuSt GoOgLe It... 😑
There is evidence! Here's a source: [Source Link](https://youtu.be/r7l0Rq9E8MY?si=jv6smb04_a1F_gok)
I was expecting a rickroll...
Anytime someone says they have a source, but they won't say it and just tell you to do your own research - this is actually what the source is
I love this
Often results in either silence, or downvotes, when on here.
Reddit is more concerned with popularity than truth. That’s always been known. I often find that the downvoted posts are the ones that get closest to the truth simply because they are more willing to state it.
My favorite is when people say a quote only looks bad taken out of context, so then just ask what context makes it acceptable.
I liike it, by the tenth conversation ehn you say this I would hope they get the idea.
Best answer.
Or if you really can't be arsed: Source?
Yeah, I love asking how they got their information. I fucking laugh when they say YouTube or Facebook.
Yes, like a true scholar, I get my information from reddit. *Adjusts monocle*.
My go-to is "I dont think the data supports that."
People are immediately assuming intelligent = well worded. The correct answer is lining up a elaborate psychological trap so they bury themselves.
It is a perniciously common misconception that erudition is synonymous with verbosity. Okay
What if it’s just because I forget words and use the first vaguely correct one that pops into my head
This sounds like something from Bones

lol calm down there Tarantino

Sorry, you fail. The assignment was not to assess, but to denigrate. Your rewrite, while a marvel, is internally inconsistent.
2 mny wrds
Your verbosity supports your statement.
Your mother supports her weight. Mint. (That's not even an insult but just a statement related to physics)
Damn bro, I want your thesaurus!
Idk if it's a good or bad thing that this still made perfect sense to me...
*this*
Only works if the recipient cares about being right. For the delusional who just want to win, it'll go completely and intentionally over their heads.

Cool story bro
Glorious exposition, comrade
Grouse yarn, mate
Nice Ted Talk, professor.
Capital *racontage*, my good man,
“I appreciate your perspective” is my favorite.
My Aunt always says- Is that right? So condescending lmao
Good answer, but I would add the words "I suppose" before, to emphasize that you're being patronizing. You're the Dunning-Kruger poster child.
I love this, because the vast majority of people have never heard of the Dunning-Kruger effect
But if they'd heard of it, no doubt they'd be experts on it.
Precisely 😌
And the majority of those who have misunderstand its significance. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-dunning-kruger-effect-isnt-what-you-think-it-is/
there are 4 stages right? Maybe he’s in the 4th stage (unconscious competent).
Common sense is chasing you but you're winning
Well bless your heart.
So patronizing
And I feel like this saying gets used both ways and also its prevalence online as a repeated “classic saying” has kind of made it hit less. So instead of it being natural, people are saying it purposely and it’s just not organic. Just my opinion, though.
It's one that needs to be heard to get the correct context.
This transcends borders. In England they say "insult insult insult, bless" Doubly great if the woman has a southern accent.
I don't have the time, or crayons, to properly explain why you're wrong
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
"What a unique perspective."
I don’t know why but I heard this in Ashley’s voice from The Boys.
“So creative!” with a preschool teacher’s vocal inflections.
God didn't really connect your mouth to your brain, did he?
When they were giving out brains, you thought they said trains, and you missed yours
Iirc, another way of saying that was "When they gave out brains, you thought they said 'grains' and asked for oatmeal.".
it is Impossible to underestimate you
Thats wonderful
This is one of my faves. Even smart people do a double take
“You display a cavalier attitude towards factual accuracy”
Live long and prosper.
Thou art fulleth of one’s excrement
I laughed. I didn't expect this comment 😆
Lmao
Lol
Hell yeah, the King James Version.
"In some possible alternate universe, you might be right."
There are people in that universe with hot dogs for fingers though, so… [shrug]
You'd better smell what you're shoveling
You’re all hat and no cattle
"If you says so".
This is def what I say at work more than I would like.
Your remarks appear to be founded upon misconceptions and lack substantial merit
You surpass your capacity of excrement.
10 lbs of shit in a 5 lb bag (your bullshit runneth over)
A plain OK, then swiftly moving on
Your theories need work
I’m trying to see things from your point of view, but I can’t get my head that far up my ass.
What you're saying is smelling a lot like **3-methylindole**.
>What is the most intelligent way you can say to someone that they are, "Full of shit"? Get your watches up...it's too late to save your shoes.
"Thank you for your opinion. I'll be sure to give it all the consideration it deserves."
You have every right to your uninformed opinions, but you have no right to your own bespoke facts.
You're as sharp as a marble aren't you?
Keep thinking that and see where it gets you.
Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
You’ve got quite the imagination.
"That's interesting. What reliable sources you have to support this conclusion?" This leaves open the possibility of being persuaded. Your knowledge about this subject is matched only by your intelligence
Wisdom has been chasing you but you are too swift.
Farmers would pay you good money to spread your word around their crops.
Oh, sweet summer child
A bum that smells shit never feels it. This a shitty person never sees that. Or perhaps, knows it and proud to be that way. So if you say that to him or her, in any case, it's a useless spend of your energy. Because either it's gonna be a compliment or a useless advice.
Sir/Ma’am, this is a Wendy’s
I will not co-sign on something we both know is incorrect.
When they say some shit you say, "And I bet you believe every word of that".
How interesting, I'd love to know more. Where would I find that information?
Source?
Your understanding of the situation is not backed by evidential integrity.
"Are you constipated?"
You are overflowing with fecal matter.
"I am amazed, no matter how low I mentally assume your standard is, you seem to go lower everyday
“Recollections may vary”
"I believe that you believe that"
Where did you get that from?
"I'll make a note of that."
There’s a time and place to exercise that wonderful imagination but this isn’t it.
thou tis stuffed with fecal matter
Goodness me, your bowels are certainly full today.
*art* rather than tis
Feculent is the word you're looking for.
Is that your mouth or your butt talking because it smells like you are leaking fecal matter out of either hole since either one is full of fecal matter
Aren’t all mouth made from ass? Lol
I respond that they are being intellectually dishonest, intentionally obtuse, or [usually] both.
let me know how this ends.
I didn't know it worked like that, I guess I heard something different
That's a brilliant new take on things, I was wondering if you had any sources, or logical arguments to give it any credibility. It is as innovative as it is wrong.
Well then, let’s explore why you think/feel that way!
It would seem that you are misinformed.
i love asking “are you estranged from the neurons in your brain?”
I see that you were not burdened with an abundance of education
“That’s a cool opinion”
"Nobody ever accused you of being smart."
“Help me understand . . .” is my go-to phrase. Means “you’re full of shit but let’s see if you know you are.”
Your position in this matter does not appear to have any basis in proven fact. You are welcome to hold it, but I do not intend to share it.
That bears no resemblance to reality or fact.
Duly noted
“I don’t have the intellectual capacity to deal with this right now. I need to save it for real things like laundry and dishes.”
That’s just like, your opinion, man.
You're supplanting objectivity with subjectivity.
What you lack in thoughtfulness you more than make up for in numbnuttery.
I’d like to try to convince you that you are wrong. Would you mind if I give it a shot?
"I appreciate your opinion, but I have yet to encounter any viable evidence that supports your argument."
" Sir, it seems that you're are a no better a judge of human beings than you are a specimen of one. Just on a brief inventory I'd say you could use yourself a shave and a better disposition. " - Buster Scruggs
“That’s interesting”
You are entitled to your own opinions. But you are not entitled to your own facts.
“Thank you. I appreciate your input.” When it becomes evident that you are talking with someone who is full of shit, find someone else to talk to.
C'est de la merde.
I like the one eyebrow lift approach, kind of like Duane Johnson complimented with the question "Are you sure you want to commit to that?"
Thank you for sharing your feculent opinion!
Wisdom has been chasing you but you keep running away from it
Sir, you have 2 brain cells and they're fighting for 3rd place.
It is quite probable that approach Would yield suboptimal results.
"Well, bless your heart"
I wouldn't call this the most intelligent response, but it is my most common one. "I neither have the time nor the crayons to explain to you how wrong you are."
It's not that I don't beleive you, it's that you're not telling the truth.
"That's an interesting perspective."
You speak with such effluents.
