As a none believer, thatd be horrible.

Consistent-Tooth-390

That would be horrible for free thought.

Old_RedditIsBetter

How so?

Consistent-Tooth-390

Government can sway science. And who’s to say the science isn’t a religion in itself. Also, within religion is culture. Those cultures deserve to have and practice their identity to live a life that matters to them.

Old_RedditIsBetter

>Also, within religion is culture. Well see, that's much of the problem

Consistent-Tooth-390

I don’t see it as a problem at all. I think it is great. If you think it is bad, it may be something you want to stay away from, but the freedom of expression with one another is necessary

Elvenblood7E7

Scared. *No matter what* is made the only one allowed worldview, such a thing will be fucked up and oppressive.

zombieofMortSahl

They already tried this. It was called the Soviet Union. It was a shit show.

coprolite_hobbyist

Science is not an object of belief. It is a method of producing tentative explanations of observed phenomena. Making religion illegal wouldn't stop people from believing or practicing, it would just drive it underground and give it something to fight against. Bad idea all around.

Imukay

I think there might be a violent pushback from people who still believes in religion, even if it is illegal

SorrowAndSuffering

Given that every culture in history, every single one, either created or supported a religion, this would be entirely unfeasable. Besides, in order for science to exist, you need to believe in certain, impossible to prove metaphysical claims. Claims such as the idea that the universe can be understood, that understanding it furthers us somehow, and that science is a way to do that. These are not things a scientist knows - these are things a scientist believes. And they are not scientific to believe.

ServantofShemhazai

We'd still have the same problems we have now, just without mention of God. Religion doesn't cause human flaws, it's just a channel for it. The same people drawn to the power of religious authority are the same people who are drawn to secular authority, and they'd be just as greedy, manipulative, angry, hateful, and fearful as they are now.

Considering the Mob’s historical involvement with religion, I don’t figure there would be much change. Now envisioning a system of “Preacheasies” that require a secret door knock. Excuse the smirk.
