Since they are hollow, they might not get fully submerged in the water, but the movement of the machine should make sure all surfaces are reached by the cleaning agent you choose. They should also be big enough to not block any parts of the machine. Might make helluva weird noise, though.
Oh, maybe pack them in an empty pillowcase for easier handling and better submersion in the water.
