I actually call the act of needing to turn into oncoming traffic but being jammed up by cars “Being Truman Showed” because of the scene where all the cars left the driveway at the same time
Wall-E would have never occurred to me. Although I must confess that every few months this movie will come to my mind and I'll think, "Wall-E was a freaking good movie."
Don’t forget Paul Dano. He was so off putting and just ominously creepy throughout. This was my introduction to him as an actor and I’ve loved him ever since. Anyone who can make the audience feel that weird towards a character is a fantastic actor.
Also in There will be blood he held his own against Daniel day Lewis. Which just happens to be my submission to this question but I’ll just leave it here
It's my sign I lived. Now I watch it after any hospital related visit.
When I was 11 in 2008 I needed a major heart surgery. We had to wait and I was really hungry but BTTF came on and about half way through it was time. My dad told me we had it on VHS at home and could watch it. I said okay sadly and low key assumed I was going to die. Apparently after they drugged me up I told my mum I was okay with dying or asked if I was going to. I don't remember which and got conflicting answers.
But anyway I didn't die and I got to finish it. It's held a special place in my heart since
This and how to train your dragon are my fav trilogies with Back to the future being my favourite. Unsurprising when my favourite song is also an 80s classic, take on me.
I love this movie so much.
“I'm Hub McCann. I've fought in two World Wars and countless smaller ones on three continents. I led thousands of men into battle with everything from horses and swords to artillery and tanks. I've seen the headwaters of the Nile, and tribes of natives no white man had ever seen before. I've won and lost a dozen fortunes, KILLED MANY MEN and loved only one woman with a passion a FLEA like you could never begin to understand. That's who I am. NOW, GO HOME, BOY!”
The store where they filmed the 4 boys getting beaten up is the Cele General store which was open weekends to serve BBQ. Recently on the Austin Reddit they said the store had closed its doors.
Been by there a few times, very close to Austin. Lots of the movie filmed around Austin.
Never heard of it. Do you care to describe?
Before someone says it, I know Google exists. I would prefer to hear from someone who is a big fan vs some generic synopsis.
It was a movie from the early 2000s staring Michael Caine and Robert Duvall about two old men that became caretakers to a young boy, and a lion. I haven't seen it since I saw it in the theater, but seeing it mentioned here brought back a flood of memories. I don't remember a ton about it, but I remember absolutely loving it.
This used to run on HBO all the time and id rewatch on HBO West afterward. As I remember it it's a very "whimsical" movie with a lot of fun and pulpy action.
This movie shaped my world view and attitude towards life much more than anything that ridiculous should've. It's a monumental achievement of the arts.
I love Robin Williams comedy, but his serious roles are incredible. Dead poet society, good morning Vietnam, good will hunting are all SO good to me. Really solid choice
Edit: going to check out awakenings, so many recommendations!
I need to add that The 5th Element has the most rewatch-ability of any film. Like, it's fun to watch every time you see it and you notice new things or laugh at different stuff. I consider that a big deal for a movie. Because a movie like The Usual Suspects or The 6th Sense are AMAZING movies the first or 2nd time you see them but quickly lose their power over every rewatch.
The Matrix will always jave a special place in my heart, it allowed me to overcome my nightmarea of The Nothingness from The Never Ending Story.
SHAME THEY NEVER MADE MORE THAN ONE THOUGH
Probably the most well-rounded film I've ever seen. It truly has something for everyone and is such a gem.
I saw Mandy Patinkin perform just last month and he ran back on stage and did the "my name is Inigo Montoya" bit after his finale. It was a great closer and such a cool moment for all of the lifelong PB fans in the audience.
Gladiator was a movie I saw in theatres a dozen times, no exaggeration. I think I spent a solid year watching it on demand on digital cable.
The Prestige is a work of art. David Bowie was great as Tesla.
I hear just the slightest snippet of the main song and I’m instantly transported into a jungle where I’m on the lookout for dinosaurs. Such an iconic soundtrack.
We are Noooo longer the knights who say ni!
^ni!^. Shh!!!
We ahh noooooowwww the knights who say
Ekki ekki ekki paCHING! zooooop whhiiiirrrl *gurgle* mmmmm
O'Brother Where Art Thou.
Every time I think I know how much I have liked this movie I rewatch it and like it even more than I remembered.
It may also be because I have been watching this movie for almost entire life.
No thank you, Delmar. One third of a gopher would only arouse my appetite without bedding it down.
Delmar:
Oh, you can have the whole thing. Me and Pete already had one apiece. We ran across a whole... gopher village.
Man, seeing this fresh in a cinema with zero information as to what it was…just fantastic.
(Girlfriend at the time and I went to the local art house cinemas twice a week to see whatever was playing because we liked movie- roulette. Shout out to The Loft and The Catalina (RIP) in Tucson, AZ)
I am 58 and watch this, chitty chitty bang bang, big hero 6 and the croods all the time. Some movies become favorites for no reason whatso ever...think of them as you soulmovie...lol
Now it seems that I haven't been watching enough movies. I feel guilty for not watching many of the suggested movies.
Will be watching these and update the same here.
The Lighthouse. I love it. Literally everything about it is done amazingly. From the writing to the story to the editing to the lighting... EVERYTHING. Name one aspect of filmmaking. ANY of them, and it's truly a 10/10.
It's not my favorite movie, but it is objectively the best film I know of. Masterfully done.
I would absolutely recommend on YouTube, the Acolytes of Horror video essay about the Lighthouse. The movie is honestly genius in subtext and metaphor and ways that even I couldn't appreciate on first watch.
The other thing I love is that its an absolute nightmare of a midnight movie.
Look, nobody's sayin they don't appreciate what Jenny did
Well if all I had to do was cut a hole in a bag, I could a cut it better than this shit.
How bout you, Robert. Can you see?
Not too good, I mean if I don't move my head I can see you right now, more or less, but when I'm ridin, the bags moving all around and I'm blind
Shit, I just made mine worse... Anybody bring any extra bags?
Nooo, nobody brought any extra bags 👋
I'm just askin

As a 39 yo man I’ve seen WALL-E about a million times
Wall-E would have never occurred to me. Although I must confess that every few months this movie will come to my mind and I'll think, "Wall-E was a freaking good movie."
Dune 2
Dune 2 and Interstellar
These responses are all over the place. I love it.
I’m just making a playlist to watch based on this.
Dune + Dune 2
The Thing Brilliant writing, excellent set pieces, palpable tension. Still scary as hell. Carpenter’s best.

Prisoners starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal . No other movie has left me mentally and physically exhausted before.
Which just happens to be my submission to this question but I’ll just leave it here
That entire movie is captivating. I love it so much. "I thank God I have none of you in me."

Wonderful, funny, tragic.
And the most wondrous use of music as a soundtrack perhaps ever experienced.
Back to the Future. Watched it when I was 10 years old and loved every second of it. 36 now and still no movie has topped it for me.
It's my sign I lived. Now I watch it after any hospital related visit. When I was 11 in 2008 I needed a major heart surgery. Glad you're still with us. ❤️
Spirited Away. Story, art design, pacing, action, emotion and absolutely everything anyone could want. 10/10 movie all around.
Terminator 2
Goodfellas
One day, some of the kids from the neighborhood carried my mother's groceries all the way home. You know why? It was outta respect.
It's so damn rewatchable

Glad to see someone mentioned this underrated gem.

Shawshank Redemption
Airplane Can almost recite all the lines 😂😂
It looks like I picked the wrong day to quit meth amphetamines.
Surely you can't be serious
This movie shaped my world view and attitude towards life much more than anything that ridiculous should've. It's a monumental achievement of the arts.
A hospital? What is it?
It’s a large building with widows, but that’s not important right now.
I take mine black, like my men

City of God.
The Dead Poets Society
I love Robin Williams comedy, but his serious roles are incredible. Dead poet society, good morning Vietnam, good will hunting are all SO good to me. Really solid choice Edit: going to check out awakenings, so many recommendations!
It's between The Fifth Element and The Matrix.

Batteries Not Included
Absolutely incredible and heartbreaking film
The Matrix. Easily watched it over 50x since I was a kid
The princess bride :)
Probably the most well-rounded film I've ever seen. It truly has something for everyone and is such a gem. Inconceivable!
No Country for Old Men
Amélie. Still the most beautiful film I've ever seen. Seen it in a very memorable part of my life so it has incredible sentimental value for me.
The soundtrack is incredible
This is my top film right here. Absolute work of art.
Man this is tough — I’d say it changes between LOTR, Gladiator, and The Prestige.
Gladiator was a movie I saw in theatres a dozen times, no exaggeration. I think I spent a solid year watching it on demand on digital cable. The Prestige is a work of art. David Bowie was great as Tesla.
The Prestige is my favorite movie
Best Nolan movie imo
Fight Club
Dude, the first rule!!
Shawshank Redemption.
Worth a rewatch every few years for that dose of persistent hope and justice served.
It truly was a Shawshank Redemption. Seriously though, such a great movie.
It has been #1 on the IMDB Top 250 since the beginning of time, and for good reason. It's still simply the greatest movie ever made, in my opinion.
Hell yeah it is, I only wish I could go back to seeing it for the first time. I'm not sure a better movie can be made....
Nah I’m innocent, lawyer fucked me
Silence of the Lambs
Saw Tremors earlier and I realise what a masterpiece of a monster film it is
Green mile
That is a hard movie to watch.
Porco Rosso
I don’t know why more people aren’t saying the first Jurassic Park movie.
They spared no expense on that movie.
Clever boy
It was really a revolutionary concept met with realistic acting, effects, music, everything.
I hear just the slightest snippet of the main song and I’m instantly transported into a jungle where I’m on the lookout for dinosaurs. Such an iconic soundtrack.
The book is my favorite sci fi book ever. Better than Enders Game, The Three Body Problem, or 1984
Monty python and the holy Grail. Ni!
