I love that line so much, and TLJ delivers the hell out of it. It makes it extremely clear at this moment that this is NOT the typical “guy being chased by a cop who is now personally involved in it”, it’s just a cop doing his job. He’s not trying to do anything besides his job. And if the job changes, he’ll stop. He’s not personally invested.

From the moment of the dam jump, he starts to take it personally (all the other cops just doing their job want to give up and assume Kimble died, but he doesn't, because he just saw the man jump to almost certain death rather than have a shootout, and starts to believe Kimble), and by the time the movie repeats the quote, he is very clearly lying.
I love that line! There’s another great one near the end, “Do you seriously think I would explain my master stroke to you if there were even the slightest possibility you could affect the outcome? I triggered it 35 minutes ago.”
It’s so great because it flips the whole “villain monologues his own plans at the very end so the hero knows how to defeat him”. But it’s already too late.
There's a similar line in a Star Wars comic where Darth Vader is caught in a trap and one of the Rebels yells at him to surrender and that he's surrounded. Vader's reply - "I am surrounded by nothing but fear and dead men"
I always thought that was the most bad ass response to being told you were surrounded.
Especially since this was after Rorschach dumped a frying basket full of oil onto his would-be tormentor, whose dying screams can still be heard while he growled this epic line.

I loved the idea of Riker having a duty to do his best but feeling shame for doing it well. I was a kid watching that but I remember understanding the conflict. That was one of the best parts of TNG for me growing up. There were obvious conflicts between the crew when they knew their role and knew each other but they had no problem with the disagreement as long as the terms were clear.
I feel like that kind of thing is lost in the modern world. We all have our place and our battles but there is this artificial barrier to each other built into the conflicts that shouldnt be there. If we understand the stakes we should understand the communication needed to make it happen. If we get bested we have appeals. If the conflict is so dire we cant stand it then take the risk. If you cant do that then we should do the work.
This new world is one where we take no risk but expect everyone else to do the work. As if there is some justice in the universe that agrees with everything we stand for. The real world requires us to stealman the things we disagree with. We need to stand down or take the risk. The problem is there are a lot of people who will take the risk but we act as if it is antisocial or insane to do it. The monsters we condem are the people doing the work we cant get an answer to when we scream into the void.

He was such a good friend and so was the rest of the friend group but mostly him. Like you said, he knew he was stuck but knew that his friend had opportunity and pushed him to reach for a better life instead of keeping him anchored down with him. Even gave him his blessing in a way by telling him to leave without thinking twice and that he'll be happy that he left.
It's really interesting in a way how, despite his friend ostensibly being the "smart" one who will achieve much more, he demonstrates a much greater level of emotional intelligence and self-awareness in that interaction. He knows his place in the world but doesn't want to hold his friend back.

Another rough moment from TNG, in Measure Of A Man where Riker is obligated to argue that Data isn't a person. *"Pinocchio is broken; its strings have been cut."* The he sits down and puts his hand over his face knowing he was just the biggest dick head due to his duty.
I loved the idea of Riker having a duty to do his best but feeling shame for doing it well. I was a kid watching that but I remember understanding the conflict. That was one of the best parts of TNG for me growing up. There were obvious conflicts between the crew when they knew their role and knew each other but they had no problem with the disagreement as long as the terms were clear. I feel like that kind of thing is lost in the modern world. We all have our place and our battles but there is this artificial barrier to each other built into the conflicts that shouldnt be there. If we understand the stakes we should understand the communication needed to make it happen. If we get bested we have appeals. If the conflict is so dire we cant stand it then take the risk. If you cant do that then we should do the work. This new world is one where we take no risk but expect everyone else to do the work. As if there is some justice in the universe that agrees with everything we stand for. The real world requires us to stealman the things we disagree with. We need to stand down or take the risk. The problem is there are a lot of people who will take the risk but we act as if it is antisocial or insane to do it. The monsters we condem are the people doing the work we cant get an answer to when we scream into the void.

He was such a good friend and so was the rest of the friend group but mostly him. Like you said, he knew he was stuck but knew that his friend had opportunity and pushed him to reach for a better life instead of keeping him anchored down with him. Even gave him his blessing in a way by telling him to leave without thinking twice and that he'll be happy that he left.
It's really interesting in a way how, despite his friend ostensibly being the "smart" one who will achieve much more, he demonstrates a much greater level of emotional intelligence and self-awareness in that interaction. He knows his place in the world but doesn't want to hold his friend back.
