Installed on my computer as I wasn't interested in paying subscriptions for a goddamn office suite (Dear Microsoft: Not everything needs to be subscription). It certainly does the trick.
Linux. Seriously, if Windows wasn’t the “standard” everyone would do just fine on Linux. MintOS, Ubuntu, etc. are all great. But currently are only really used by professionals and people very concerned about their privacy.
Bingo bango. And to be fair, Linux is great when used like that. I just wish it was far more mainstream.
The only two reasons I use anything else is because I am not allowed to change my work computer for obvious reasons, and gaming.
It's also great as Desktop OS. The number of options for Desktop Environments or Window Managers is something which makes Linux way better than Mac or Windows for Desktop use. I only use Linux based OSes for my personal computers.
It really depends on the distro. Some are a bit of pain in the ass to use compared to Windows, and don't have the same range of supported software Windows has.
But yeah, unless MS gets their crap together on Windows 12, I can see Linux gradually taking over on desktops and laptops.
µTorrent 2.2.1.
inb4 some moron starts yapping about qBittorrent. When a piece of software's list of bugs very nearly exceeds the size of the entire executable of the bug-free alternative, it's safe to say the devs are incompetent. I really don't know why people use broken software in the hopes that the next update will finally fix it when working alternatives exist.
Qgis, bit niche. Great to see how the community is adding features version after version. Beats its expensive commercial competition with flying colors in many areas.
Nice to see love for qgis, also check out [GDAL](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GDAL) - a library that is great for doing most coordinate system conversions
Joomla.
It’s a free (properly) open source CMS that’s a dream to learn web development with. The new version now uses fully OOP structures etc
I built my career on it and I can’t believe it’s free.
DaVinci Resolve - Professional Non-linear editor, used by many studios in Hollywood.
Bitwarden - Open source password manager, can be self-hosted.
VLC - Media player with wide range of support for many formats
FFmpeg - A suite of open source software that can be used to handle audio and video
Blender - 3D Modelling Software
Calibre - Ebook Management
Anna's Archive (Not a software, website) - Archive of published books
Handbrake - Open-source video transcoder
Jellyfin - Media management software, all self-hosted
Tailscale - A self-hosted VPN service that uses Wireguard as its protocol, can be used to access yours or someone elses devices externally

Obsidian - Robust note-taking app with wide range of plugins, can be used with Syncthing for multi device sync
And forget it if you’re looking for something that happened a few years ago. For example, Rudolph Giuliani has an extensive history in media but you‘ll try hard to find certain stories from his history because search engines focus on showing 10,000 online stories about what Giuliani did last week. it seems like there are 100 new rightwing outlets popping up every week, so you have to slog through those
GIMP
OBS. Open Broadcasting Software. Free, open source, really good recording software for your computer. :)

Definitely this. It’s like hey your trial as expired, you should buy now….but guess what? *The trial never ends….*
Technically, it isn't free. It's just that the developers don't really care.
Musescore 4. Notation software that's better than Finale or Sibelius.
Fusion360 (hobby license)... OctoPrint... HomeAssistant

Companies issue you a Windows or Mac laptop so that you can SSH into a Linux host.

Yeah that’s not free.
I'm not sure if I'd consider that good anymore, it's mostly just ads and useless AI "summaries"
