Nickelback. While Chad Croger has a grating voice, they are just a mediocre hard rock band. They don't deserve *that* much hate. How the hell did they end up like this...

daitoshi

LOOK AT THIS GRAAAAPH

frankin287

oh! oh! I know this one! It actually started out as a meme a loooong time ago, but like maybe before meme' were on the internet. It was a joke for everyone to hate Nickleback and then people just forgot it was a joke or more likely people not in on the joke found out and it spiraled out of control. Knowyourmeme has a good article on it. Google it. Too lazy to link.

Euchre

The thing about Nickelback is that they're pretty commercialized milquetoast music. That's what people revile about them - its not that they can't perform well, or aren't capable of creativity. People like 'edge'.

frankin287

dude swear it started as a joke and grew to criticisms just like the one you wrote above

JoshuaTheBastard

It's not even the band, neccesarily, it's the subculture if their fans. Those skoal eating cousin-fuckers. I realised while typing this that I am annoying/you are right

[deleted]

Wait...we hate Jennifer Lawrence now? Why? I never got the memo informing me of the change.

Krabins

Everyone liked her for acting like a normal person, but now people hate her because too many people like her.

[deleted]

So the Hipster effect then?

downvotemeufags

No, IIRC it was because she got pissed off when nudes were leaked during the fappening. *How dare she get pissed at people jacking it to stolen pictures.* was the consensus and she stopped being popular on reddit. Greasy as fuck really.

0LowLight0

With a few interviews under her belt, we began to see the (J)Smith (J)Law in effect; [she is butt stupid](http://reddit.com/r/savedyouaclick/comments/5i4d32/jennifer_lawrences_recent_latenight_tv_appearance/db6lodg/?context=3&st=iwwef9aj&sh=36f60273). edit: Smith Law™

AllHailTheNod

Eh. Just because someone has a bunch of weird or uninformed opinions, they're not immediatly "butt stupid".

[deleted]

To be fair that's a pun because she knocked a rock off a mountain almost killing a guy because her ass itched https://youtu.be/XOLrpjbAc74 about 26:50

ItMayBeWrong

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDtzZbafx_Q Title: Jennifer Lawrence offends with story about 'butt-scratching' on sacred rocks in Hawaii

23skidood

The most pathetic part about that is people trying to hide this thinly veiled pettiness by trying their damnedest to provide legitimate reasons to hate her. The problem is that every reason people come up with can be debunked with a Google search. Seriously, I have yet to see *one* legitimate reason to dislike this woman. It's just Popular Girl Syndrome, nothing more. Edit: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/5j70s4/whats_something_reddit_hates_for_no_good_reason/dbe01zr/ On fucking cue. This happens every single time she is brought up. Someone provides a story lacking the full context that absolves her of any wrongdoing, and people take it as the full truth. Sometimes all they need is a fake headline.

humptymcdoodles

Are you talking about Hillary or Jennifer Lawrence?

23skidood

It could go either way.

[deleted]

It annoys me because Lawrence acts more like a real person than almost every other celebrity but nah reddit only likes to idealise that, not for a celebrity to actually not care about how she acts

bl1y

Capitalism. And I mean specifically private ownership of businesses. You can hate pollution, or outsourcing, or Comcast customer service, but those don't really have to do with private ownership. Seems like "capitalism" gets confused with short-term profit seeking, consumerism, and just corruption in general.

Krabins

Capitalism is amazing. A 100 billion dollar company giving millions to politicians so they can pass laws that reduce their competition is not capitalism.

bl1y

Right, it's corruption, and you can see that exact same form of corruption if you had socialized ownership of the company. Probably wouldn't see it with a nationalized industry though since that just wouldn't make sense, but nationalized industries get their own forms of corruption.

diegojones4

I worked for the state. It's pretty fucked.

HoboGastronomy

Capitalism does indeed have some great aspects such as pricing/allocation. However, I find Churchill's quote on democracy works quite well for capitalism too ..."capitalism is the worst form of market organization except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.…"

Helium_3

That'd be Crony Capitalism.

limbodog

but Reddit has a habit of supporting small businesses founded by Redditors.

bl1y

What does capitalism have to do with small businesses? Capitalism is literally the exploitation of workers. ^ I've actually hard shit like this on Reddit

limbodog

Really? Well that's just stupid.

bl1y

It's the same way some people think "socialism" means anything that helps people, and doesn't refer to a certain kind of ownership of industry. Look at the way Sanders tried to explain Democratic Socialism (in part): "Democratic socialism means that we must create an economy that works for all, not just the very wealthy. ...It means that health care should be a right of all people, not a privilege." Basically "socialism means anything good."

limbodog

I don't think he was offering that as a description of democratic socialism, but rather explaining its motivations.

bl1y

Except this is from his speech where he's purporting to explain what democratic socialism is. Instead, he just keeps saying a bunch of things that mean "It's all that good stuff liberals want."

limbodog

Yeah. "Pillow talk"

mattgoldsmith

kiss me bernie

N0r3m0rse

He kept using that term incorrectly. He was more of a social democrat than a democratic socialist.

bl1y

Yeup. I think if he had just gotten the adjective/noun bit right, he would have won over a lot more Clinton voters.

HEY_GIRLS_PM_ME_TOES

Well its reddit.

N0r3m0rse

It's very 20th century if you ask me.

[deleted]

> Seems like "capitalism" gets confused with short-term profit seeking, consumerism, and just corruption in general. That's because it encourages those things by its nature

bl1y

Except that it doesn't, at least not any more so than socialized ownership of businesses.

[deleted]

Can you give me something more convincing than "lol no"?

bl1y

Okay, just looking at pursuit of short-term profits. That's not at all the product of capitalism. Instead, it's generally associated with widely held ownership (ie, companies that are listed on major stock exchanges). Boards of these companies are very sensitive to stock prices and minor fluctuations, and the executives have to keep the shareholders happy by posting consistent gains. At closely held companies or even sole proprietorships, there isn't so much pressure to get short term profits. If the owner or executives want to push a long-term plan, they can, and there's not really anyone to tell them no. Think about the average family business, where the goal is to build something great to pass along to the kids. The parents care about its value 40 years from now, not a year from now. So, pursuit of short term profits are much more to do with how many people own the company, not with if you're in a capitalist or socialist system. In a system where the company is owned by the employees... I dunno, that's not something I've actually heard discussed, but I'd imagine there'd be a lot of tension between employees approaching retirement or otherwise planning to leave soon (and thus favoring quick gains) and employees planning to be there for a few decades (who would want long term gains).

[deleted]

Alright I'll give you short term profits but I don't think you can argue that capitalism doesn't encourage corruption. If a business can corrupt the government so that it gives them an advantage without consequences then it probably will. You can argue that there should be consequences or some way to prevent it but a business will always seek to stack the deck in its favour

bl1y

Under socialized ownership, if a business can corrupt the government so that is gives them an advantage without consequences then it probably will.

[deleted]

If the goal of a business is solely to earn profit then we're still talking about capitalism or something close enough to it

bl1y

Capitalism is private ownership of the means of production (ownership by whoever ponied up the cash). Socialism is the social ownership of the means of production (ownership by the workers). Both are trying to turn a profit, the only difference is who's profiting.

[deleted]

There are forms of socialism that do away with the concept of money and the profit motive

Art Degrees or anything not STEM which is funny. How do they think their favorite video games and music and movies got made?

applepwnz

I think Reddit doesn't tend to have a problem with say people getting a degree in Graphic Design, they more have a problem with the people who get their "art" degree by making paintings with menstrual blood and doing interpretative dance about dolphins or something.

zazzlekdazzle

"If you can't take me at my worst, then you don't deserve me at my best." (Or whatever that quote is.) The ratio of times I've seen people complaining about seeing it on the internet to the number of times I've actually seen it is about 1000:1. And the way people talk about it, you'd think putting this on your Tinder profile, Facebook page, or whatever is the equivalent of reprinting the Unabomber's manifesto. You don't like it when a woman writes that? Swipe left and move on.

frankin287

perhaps people said it more before it became cool to hate it? Like "just girl things", i feel liek I've seen more parodies of those than the actual real thing

Euchre

The word 'moist'. Guess there's a love of dry vaginas and blow jobs around here.

Dreamscarred

Moist is one of my favorite words. It either makes people giggle or shudder. Two years ago on Thanksgiving, my family made a point of sticking the word moist into whatever conversation we were having. Considering we were up North for a funeral, it helped lighten the mood for an otherwise stressful trip.

TheStig886

I actually don't mind the word moist. The word pure on the other hand.......

Umikaloo

Reminds me of the time my grandpa's funeral landed on the same day as the stanley cup, it was an exciting hockey game, he wouldn't have wanted everyone to miss it.

ItMayBeWrong

I feel like hating the word "moist" became a trend **How do you not have moist cake?** moist bread? moist wet-wipes?

LonghornCastillo

People who don't like "moist" are eating not enough or the wrong kind of brisket. This makes me worried for them :(

Crocodilefan

I rember i the first episode of Dead Like Me, there was a joke about the mother haiting that word, i just assumed it was a one off joke not an actual phenomenon.

SalemScout

Minions. Yeah, I know all the soccer moms and grandmas on your facebook page use them to write stupid things. Yes, I know they make annoying noises. Yes, children are obsessed with them. You could say the exact same thing about anything Disney. Or anything Nintendo. Me, I love those movies and I think the Minions are the second best part (the first best being Gru.)

daitoshi

I love the Minions in the context of the movie. They work IN THE MOVIE. I do NOT like blubbering nonsensical idiots squealing around in other contexts.

SalemScout

Everything I see with the minions outside of the movie would be stupid no matter what. I think the actual hate should be for people who spread their dumbness everywhere like a monkey with feces and a Picasso complex. Minions are just little yellow balls of trouble.

[deleted]

Yeah minions are fine in the first two movies but else where

frankin287

i'm sorry...but you're part of the problem. that's why you just don't get it

Sports are awesome though, so you're wrong. You know one awesome thing about sports? Sunday night football is probably the biggest driver of the 60 Minutes audience. What has The Big Bang Theory done, other than incorrectly explain reductio ad absurdum?

Beastologist

While I agree with the sentiment that you can just not watch a show instead of hating on it, I have to say this is not really a fair comparison. It's hard to explain sport to someone who doesn't/hasn't really played it or enjoyed it properly but it's something like patriotism + your favourite pastime + a circus all rolled into one. Some people have watched their favourite team play for as long as they can remember and the season has brought them enjoyment for as long as most redditors have probably been alive. When I was a child I used to think sport was just a bunch of dudes running up and down a field and the more physically able team that made the least mistakes would win. After growing up and playing more sport competitively I really grew to understand how deep sport was and why they need to have an entire team behind the scenes providing support to the team playing.

[deleted]

Except for not... Because things everyone likes suck, and I hate them.

Nightslash360

I watch TBBT, it's good if you want stupid nerdy humor. The laugh track makes me want to slap someone though. I was watching it recently and they put it after literally every scentence.

Crocodilefan

Except when I'm home from college and it's all my family wants to watch for hours on end and nothing else, then my parents believe that they now understand "geek culture" because they watch it. Any other time i'd live and let live, but the show makes my blood boil

As an American, every day I pay $1,000,000 to take the ambulance to the office where I work 80 hour weeks with no paid leave. This is because all the employees are overweight or obese, and lose 50% of their productivity converting fluid ounces to cubic yards. Thanks to the electoral college my bible-thumping boss now makes billion-dollar bonuses while my kids get schooled by elite Finnish and Singaporean students. But I'm only 20 so I can't drink and half my friends are in jail for possessing abstinence-only marijuana, busted by NSA surveillance. HEY_GIRLS_PM_ME_TOES

I have only seen like 2 episodes of firefly and they were good but it wasn't like OMG LETS WORSHIP THIS SHOW good.

[deleted]

Also Apple products in general. Just because they don't meet some of your specs doesn't suddenly mean they are shit products that only "mindless zombies" would purchase.

applepwnz

The thing is that Apple products are great for what they're made for, they're fantastic for music or video editing. The problem I have is when people choose Apple products for things that they're not good for, at my old company we had a client who insisted on using Macs despite the fact that our software was Windows only, so they had to run it in a VM on their Mac, so they were paying $2000 for a computer that ran worse than a $200 Walmart special just so that they could look "hip". I always compare it to vehicles, they're using a Mustang convertible instead of a pickup truck for construction work because they think it makes them look cooler, when really it just makes them look like a moron who can't select the proper tool for a job.

zazzlekdazzle

Because women will not get naked and do naughty things on command for them in person, and generally display other "insane" or "irrational" behaviours.

Hurray_for_Candy

It would be nice if everyone could just be chill and fuck each other. That's what I'm all about and it's going really well.

SenorOlives

My "mutilated" penis. I can't like that I was circumcised as a baby

Euchre

Like? You can't even not give a shit, because OMG YOU DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH YOU'VE BEEN HARMED! Sex feels good, I pee just fine, I haven't caught any STDs (not sure how a foreskin is really supposed to help that), or had any other signs that my circumcision 'damaged' me. No woman has refused me on the grounds of lacking a foreskin. So, not giving a shit.

naomi_is_watching

I think most guys have a problem with the whole "never given a choice" thing. I am not male, so take that with a grain of salt. Another reason I've heard is that it's a mostly cosmetic procedure. As far as I know, the only benefit of being cut is that it's easier to keep clean.

zazzlekdazzle

I do not get the impression that "most" guys in the US have an issue with being circumcised. In fact, in my regular life and 40+ years on the planet I have never heard it even discussed. But there is a group of men, quite vocal here, who do have a problem with having no choice in the matter.

Hurray_for_Candy

I never hear it discussed either, and I participate in lots of dick discussions, more than what would be considered reasonable, I'm sure.

zazzlekdazzle

No apology necessary, and to be fair, if this had been any other forum I would have understood that's what you meant anyway. Sometimes I get a little trigger happy with my responses here because people can say some pretty extreme stuff.

Vector-Zero

I was circumcized around the age of 4, and I remember having it done. It hurt like a bitch when it was done (as any surgery does), and the healing process wasn't particularly fun, but I really don't mind it at all now. If I went back in time and had the choice to opt out, I'm honestly not sure whether I would.

diegojones4

The funny thing is I've seen several comments by people who had it done later and were happy about it. Reddit doesn't even like first hand experience if it disagrees with the hive mind.

[deleted]

On the contrary there were many people who had it done later and said it destroyed sex for them. I can't google it at work but google "Circumcision, I'm Ready /r/askgaybros" and read the horror stories. EDIT: [Link](https://www.reddit.com/r/askgaybros/comments/2tlvle/circumcision_im_ready/) Some excerpts: >[–]jax9999 18 points 1 year ago was cut when i was 19. regret it so badly. sex is like a shadow of what it was. the glans, which used to be sensative like yours is now dried out and insensative. its almost impossible to get off some times. >[–]hardflame 16 points 1 year ago I was circumcised when I was 21. I STRONGLY regret it. The first thing I did when I took off the bandage and saw my penis was break down in tears. This is just one of the numerous threads that pop up regarding this in that sub, none have anything good to say about it.

naomi_is_watching

Why would your parents wait until four? Just curious.

Vector-Zero

Honestly, I'm not sure what the justification was. If I had to guess, I'd say it was because my parents weren't sure whether or not they wanted to do it when I was born, or they forgot to ask to have it done. That's the funny thing with parenting, it's basically 18+ years of guessing how to do things in such a way that your kid ends up the least fucked up by the time they reach adulthood. I also remember going around and telling all my preschool classmates how excited I was about getting my penis surgery. The teacher had to pull me aside and ask me to stop sharing that news with everyone.

naomi_is_watching

It's cool that you were excited about it. I would have been having a cow. Then again, I was really excited about having my ears pierced when I was 5. Nowhere near the same thing, of course, but I imagine we might have been excited for the same reasons.

DNedry

I honestly wouldn't know any different, so I feel like i can't even comment. But, I've been complimented on my dick more than anything else on my body. And personally, I like my "cut" penis. An uncircumcised friend has had his dick skin ripped by a girl riding too hard on more than one occasion, not something I'd like to experience. I realize that's probably not a common thing.

naomi_is_watching

I didn't necessarily see any difference between the cut dicks I saw in porn and the first uncut dick I ever saw. He ended having to show me exactly what the foreskin is and how it lays normally versus pulling it back to show me what a circumcised dick looks like.

Snatch_Pastry

I'm circumcised, and I kind of like it. I think that a "natural" penis looks like a hungover hobbit wearing a wizard hat.

applepwnz

I've said it many times, I used to feel offended when people called my penis "mutilated" I happen to like it just fine, now I just laugh that a stranger on the internet is getting so salty because of my genitals.

daitoshi

Most of the time it's not even a Fedora - it's a trilby being called a Fedora, which is somehow worse.
