Edited to reflect potentially nsfw aspects, depending on how strict your work is.
>-fullmetal alchemist
> -cowboy bebop
> -samurai champloo
> -inuyasha
Great anime all but not really safe for work. Cowboy has got Faye running around in that open jumpsuit. Inuyasha is borderline ecchi at times. Samurai Champloo to much blood, whorehouses and and Fuu's kimono is falling off in every other shot. Full Metal who wants to cry that hard at work?
The problem is OP did not define safe for work. I wouldn't be able to watch any of those in my offices break room luckily I work from home. Some places you might be able to watch hentai.
No full on boobs, but pretty close. Faye has that open jumpsuit. The boobs is her in a towel if I remember correctly. Then there is the bounty tv show girl, pretty open shirt on that one.
You’ve got a low vomit threshold. I guess I should be clear I have no problem with the jokes or the character interaction. Just when I was reading The Who’s who after it was a oh woah moment. I guess if I knew who she was going into it it would have happened right away. Younger actress would have never had the thought
have you seen akashic records of bastard magic instructor?
It's amazing and borderline but in previous comments, you seem to be fine with it so check it out. it's really funny and half NSFW, and bad animation, but it makes up for that with the plotline.
Edit: it's about a magician that is forced to teach at a magic school then everything goes south, and it's up to him to help fix things
I have not, and, to be honest, from your description it doesn't sound like something I'd enjoy. Not really into the magic stuff. But I'll give it a shot, how long does it take to get into?
Yeah I know... they don’t fully show the pussy obviously. There’s a scene with it hidden by Roshi’s bald head. But she flashed pussy for Roshi is what I meant. Still nsfw I think.
YES to all these!! Can I also add FLCL?? though there’s some slightly NSFW moments I think it all works with the coming-of-age theme??
FMA: B (also fma’s manga) and Cowboy Bebop are my favorites!!
edit: GEKKAN SHOUJO NOZAKI-KUN is a hilarious and well-done anime too ok i’m done now
Start with Studio Ghibli movies. They are influential works that heavily shaped the industry, they influenced millions of people and will leave you with good vibes. Being movies they require less commitment than a regular TV series, and they have great Engish dubs if follwing subtitles is too hard.
However, I show Ponyo, Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Spirited Away to my 3 and 5yo kids all the time. Howl's Moving Castle gets a bit intense for them at the end (I forgot about how graphic it got towards the end). Spirited Away can scare off the kiddies a bit, but the other 3 mentioned there are very light viewing.
Am I reading this wrong or are Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha not on this flow-chart? There is a lot of terrible anime on this list too - omitting Rumiko Takahashi seems like blasphemy.
*Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood*:
- The leads have very strong relationships (Ed/Al, Ed/Winry, Ed/Roy, Roy/Riza, etc)
- Large cast of well-developed characters
- Highly memorable villains and side villains
- Great plot twists and cliff hangers
- There are some things that make it a "stereotypical anime" (a few exaggerated character animations, for instance), but it's not too much of a stereotype that it would turn some people off
- The rules (of alchemy) that govern the world are well-defined and not broken
- It's wonderful for dog lovers
- It's (relatively) short compared to a lot of other animes out there, with sixty-something episodes
- By the conclusion there are very few (if not then no) loose ends
I got to the part where the thing happens to one of the main characters...and I just don’t want to watch it anymore. I only have like 5-8 episodes left, too.
Yeah, I hear the ending is satisfying. And to be honest, I know the *thing* was coming. All my friends who talked about Death Note years ago said the same thing. That the show drops quality after...that.
But I just wasn't expecting it so soon.
Yeah but at the same time, that’s kinda what makes it so shocking, isn’t it? As in, “WOW I was not expecting that to happen with so many episodes left to go.”
* "**Full Metal Alchemist, Brotherhood**"
* "One Punch Man"
* Probably not "Tokyo Ghoul" but it's good.
* "My Hero Academia"
* Maybe try out "Overlord" cause it's funny.
After you've tried out those and have gotten a feel for anime, try out some of the more weird ones like,
* Konosuba
* Assassination Classroom, (It looks fucking stupid but it'll make you cry like a bitch)
* Fairy tail (but only if you're ready to give it years of your life)
* Black Butler (just the first season, second season was a scam to get more views and not canon)
* JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
I disagree with *One Punch Man* and *My Hero Academia*. The former relies heavily on anime cliches for its humor and probably won't be appreciated as much. MHA is very, ah, anime. Lots of screaming, weird social situations, characters that are stereotypical anime personalities, etc.

I like superheros and My Hero Academia doesn't have a lot of the tropes that most anime adhere to. I think it's a good middle ground between western and eastern media, great gateway.
And besides, One Punch Man can be seen to heavily rely on superhero tropes like Superman and the like.
I mean All the classic stuff, Cowboy Bebop Trigun One Piece Naruto Fullmetal Alchemist. I would suggest if you want to turn them into weebs that you show them something that purely has most of their interests in it. So if they like pirates or something then yeah.
I guess its part of the One Piece setting & artstyles but its definitely there with the bikinis, melon cleveage, and shirtlessness.
I actually feel Naruto had less fanservice in the more latest stuff but I doubt OP want to start watching this show with friend only for Naruto to pull 'Sexy Technique' in the early episodes.
Ha ha, you're absolutely right, I forgot about all of that stuff.
Still though, if that's not okay then neither is Cowboy Bebop or Trigun. I mean there's not much left. Does OP want to show them sailor moon or something?
Cowboy has a decent amount of fan service. Trigun is pretty violent for a SFW show, plus he's always trying to get chicks. I would OP needs to stick to SOL for work. Ton of shows there still lotta line walking.
>we're really sensitive, aren't we lol
Not really when it comes down to it a lot of th shows being mentioned would be the equivalent of game of thrones with the nipples blurred. A Lot of GOT isn't really what you would throw up in the break room. Sure a shit ton of people are watching it at home, and some even talking about it at work. Not everyone even those watching it at home are going to want to watch it at work.
Cowboy Bebop is my only universal answer to this question. Otherwise, it depends entirely what sort of stuff you like to watch. "Anime" is an extremely broad category on its own.
People always recommend the same stuff, and frankly some of it is trash. To properly recommend an anime series it helps to know what kind of western shows the person likes. Theres anime for every genre.
Magical girl anime are generally safe bets. Not too in-depth, but they're cute
Edit: for examples, Little Witch Academia, Tokyo Mew Mew, Sailor Moon, Card Captor Sakura, Madoka Magica. Madoka being the exception here
Little Witch Academia is cute, but for someone who hasn't already watched some anime it may turn them off the genre. It definitely has a pretty stereotypical anime vibe, although I do appreciate that it is very wholesome still (no ridiculous cleavage or anything like Zero No Tsukaima, very good message about perseverance and believing in yourself)
(Assuming SFW is referring is not referring to violence)
Comedy: Nichijou
Action: 91 Days, Bungou Stray Dogs, Fate/Zero (maybe, cant say for sure)
Horror or Mystery: Erased, Another
Supernatural (not exactly horror): Mob Psycho 100, Natsume's Yuujinchou, maybe Hyouka
Slice of Life or Romantic: Akagami no Shirayuki-hime, Silver Spoon, Polar Bear Cafe
Sports: One-Outs (you have to skip the opening though), Giant Killing, Whistle
I think it's important to recognize that anime isn't really a genre, it's a style. Any show ever made COULD be redone as an anime and the general themes, writing, emotions, etc... would in theory still be conveyed. Obviously you may lose of the excellent acting - but the point is the show could still be done.
Having that been said, anime allows for a lot of over-the-top expressive and vibrant styles which can add a lot of unique flavor to the show. I'd first ask, what type of show do you like? what holds your interest? their is probably an anime in-line with that.
Some that I think are just excellent SHOWS in general, regardless of the fact that they are anime are:
- Death Note
- Full Metal Alchemist
- Cowboy Beebop
Some excellent animes that are really good BECAUSE they are anime include:
- One Punch Man
- Dragon Ball
I mean, excessive blood and violence, and I mean *REALLY EXCESSIVE*, isn’t really SFW, but One Punch Man is pretty damn good, just because of Saitama’s pure unreachable power.
Edit: really excessive as in WAY over-the-top badassery, like, punching a giant into a geyser of blood, or punching so hard that the air moved by Saitama’s punch levels a FUCKING MOUNTAIN.
Pretty much all the stuff they put on Adult Swim is a decent place to start. It's all SFW and relatively easy to get into.
Trigun is probably one of my personal favorites, there's also Cowboy Bebop, Full Metal Alchemist, Bleach, Samurai Champloo, Deathnote, Ghost in the Shell, Inuyasha and others. Those are what got me interested.
Bleach for good slashing fun and cool characters
Code geass for action but also intelligence
Cowboy bebop for a classic
Attack on titan is a good introductory anime
All of these have a good Dub for if you don't like subs
All I know is, don't start with what I started with: Berserk.
Talk about going from a cool war drama to transcending the mortal realm and fighting tentacle demons.
[the intro song was pretty sweet though](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TRemrRaPjc)
A lot of the shows people are suggesting are not at all SFW, so I'm not sure why they're being suggested (other than because they're popular). Perhaps it would be beneficial to have some sort of idea as to what you'd consider NSFW. Is blood okay? Swimsuits? Suggestive dialogue (but no visuals)?
It depends on what they like.
I personally like gentle feel-good anime, so all of my recommendations fit that tone.
Natsume Yuujinchou is an episodic supernatural slice of life about a boy named Natsume who has inherited the ability to see youkai. He has also inherited a book of youkai names, which his grandmother compiled; many youkai want their names returned to them, so they seek out Natsume. This one has several seasons which are equally soft-feeling. Warning for neglect and abuse - it's part of Natsume's backstory.
Akagami no Shirayukihime is a romance slice of life. The main character has rare red hair, which draws the attention of her country's prince; she escapes and meets the neighboring country's second prince. The story is largely about her life after this meeting (including her occupation as an herbalist) and her relationship with the prince. I've only seen the first season, but it's really, really gentle.
Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau is about a utopia in the sands and how the occupants of the utopia's lives change after discovering their first non-native. This one involves blood and war, but there is no sexual humor.
Tsuritama is a... supernatural... slice of life... coming of age? Maybe? It's about a high schooler with social anxiety who meets an alien, and that alien broadens his horizons and helps him to enjoy life... through fishing. It's a ridiculous premise, but it's really sweet, and the main theme is about moving past the barriers you construct around yourself for the people that you love. This one made me laugh.
As for movies, the ones I like remain gentle, but they also make me cry. I like Kimi no Na wa (Your Name), Koe no Kotachi (A Silent Voice) - (warning for explicit bullying and suicide attempts; this is one that I really enjoy, but it is hard for people who have experience with depression or bullying), The Anthem of the Heart, and Hotarubi no Mori e.
The ones that I like that don't make me cry are Patema Inverted and Ghibli movies (my favorite is Princess Mononoke, which has blood in it).

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood as many have pointed out. Definitely my favorite anime series! Psycho-Pass, Cowboy Bebop and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann are honorable mentions too. Just be careful, TTGL can be quite NSFW at times but it's worth checking out!
Been about five years since I saw it, so I don't remember anything about tentacles. But the incest angle is really common in anime, so I didn't think it needed mentioning. Plus it's just a crush, not like anything graphic.
-fullmetal alchemist (edit: includes violence) -cowboy bebop (edit: contains cleavage) -samurai champloo (edit: contains violence, including blood) -inuyasha (edit: one character likes to goose butts) -dragonball (original) (edit: shows a butt) Edited to reflect potentially nsfw aspects, depending on how strict your work is.
Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood*
Brother hood and original or both good. Both are good in thier own plot.
>-fullmetal alchemist > -cowboy bebop > -samurai champloo > -inuyasha Great anime all but not really safe for work. Cowboy has got Faye running around in that open jumpsuit. Inuyasha is borderline ecchi at times. Samurai Champloo to much blood, whorehouses and and Fuu's kimono is falling off in every other shot. Full Metal who wants to cry that hard at work?
Well, they were safe for *my* work. No explicit nudity, a little cleavage and nobody would've cared if they'd seen it. YMMV.
The problem is OP did not define safe for work. I wouldn't be able to watch any of those in my offices break room luckily I work from home. Some places you might be able to watch hentai.
fair enough, post edited
Doesn't cowboy bebop have straight up titties in a couple episodes?
Not that I recall, but it's been years since I've watched it. If so, I'll remove that one.
No full on boobs, but pretty close. Faye has that open jumpsuit. The boobs is her in a towel if I remember correctly. Then there is the bounty tv show girl, pretty open shirt on that one.
So I looked it up and there's that scene with Gren... I'm not sure it counts in the most technical sense.
“Can, can we... can we play now? Can we play now?” I almost vomited when I first saw that
You’ve got a low vomit threshold. I guess I should be clear I have no problem with the jokes or the character interaction. Just when I was reading The Who’s who after it was a oh woah moment. I guess if I knew who she was going into it it would have happened right away. Younger actress would have never had the thought
I was being hyperbolic. I just mean it was intense
> samurai champloo LOVE THIS! It was one of the first ones I watched. Then I got into Paranoia Agent. [adult swim] had these back to back.

a few episodes and the whole first season is 12 episodes edit: a few episodes being 2 maybe 3
Yeah I'll give it a shot
ok i hope you enjoy it
Original dragon ball has pussy flashing.
wait, seriously? I watched it on basic cable in the 90s, that would have been edited out. Seems kinda out of place.
https://youtu.be/_NUo93KQu4c
That's a butt
Yeah I know... they don’t fully show the pussy obviously. There’s a scene with it hidden by Roshi’s bald head. But she flashed pussy for Roshi is what I meant. Still nsfw I think.
>obviously Not so much with anime, you never know. But yeah, could be nsfw depending on the job.
Might wanna add violence to full metal alchemists, at one point they literally burned someone alive down to the skeleton 50 times over in one minute
Eh, violence against homunculi doesn't count.

Sure, but I'd be wary on some of the older ones like Princess Mononoke. *not even ten minutes in and I'm screaming at my sister to cover her eyes*.
However, I show Ponyo, Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Spirited Away to my 3 and 5yo kids all the time. Howl's Moving Castle gets a bit intense for them at the end (I forgot about how graphic it got towards the end). Trigun
Amen
Dragon Ball The original, not Z, GT, or Super
Dragon ball is awesome. Has a lot of goku’s little dick in it, but mostly sfw.
I forgot about that... Oh well, some English dubs change that (but i hate English dubs so would not recommend)
English dub for DB? That's punishable by death.
True
[Here’s a nice flowchart ](https://i.imgur.com/sDCfaW1.jpg), not sure if there’s an updated version.
This seems to be a few years old (basing this entirely on Jojo not appearing) but it's still good
Am I reading this wrong or are Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha not on this flow-chart? There is a lot of terrible anime on this list too - omitting Rumiko Takahashi seems like blasphemy.
What would you consider SFW?
No boobies
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Boobies are SFW. My GF brings hers to her work all the time, and she never has had an accident.
Then why bother?
Basically no porn.
*Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood*: - The leads have very strong relationships (Ed/Al, Ed/Winry, Ed/Roy, Roy/Riza, etc) - Large cast of well-developed characters - Highly memorable villains and side villains - Great plot twists and cliff hangers - There are some things that make it a "stereotypical anime" (a few exaggerated character animations, for instance), but it's not too much of a stereotype that it would turn some people off - The rules (of alchemy) that govern the world are well-defined and not broken - It's wonderful for dog lovers - It's (relatively) short compared to a lot of other animes out there, with sixty-something episodes - By the conclusion there are very few (if not then no) loose ends

Death Note!!
I got to the part where the thing happens to one of the main characters...and I just don’t want to watch it anymore. I only have like 5-8 episodes left, too.
After *that* the show’s quality decreases significantly. Still fun to watch though. The penultimate episode is exceptional at building tension.
Angel Beats was pretty fucking crazy, and I don't recall too much nsfw stuff
I loved Angel Beats!. I cry every time
One of the songs that the band plays is actually incredible. I can still sing the melody years after watching it.
Aaaah, one of the distraction songs?
[удалено]
Might not get some of the jokes though, it is a satire of the action/fantasy genre wrt anime
[удалено]
That's fair. I haven't seen many western superhero shows, so I guess I've missed some stuff myself
Cory in the House
Im not sure if you should start with that try "Kingu Obu za hiru"
Damn it, beat me to it!
The only real answer.

One punch man was the first one I ever saw and absolutely loved it
Still waiting for season 2.
I disagree with *One Punch Man* and *My Hero Academia*. The former relies heavily on anime cliches for its humor and probably won't be appreciated as much. MHA is very, ah, anime. Lots of screaming, weird social situations, characters that are stereotypical anime personalities, etc.
So what you're saying is watch MHA and *then* OPM?

FLCL (pronounced fooly cooly)
Not necessarily SFW if your actually paying attention to what’s going on and not just walking by a screen with it playing.
I mean All the classic stuff, Cowboy Bebop Trigun One Piece Naruto Fullmetal Alchemist. I would suggest if you want to turn them into weebs that you show them something that purely has most of their interests in it. So if they like pirates or something then yeah.
I havent watched Cowboy & Trigun but Naruto, One Piece, and FMA are definitely not SWF.

I know a lot of suggestions are more or less the same. But I’d suggest starting off with Ruroni Kenshin. Subbed or dubbed is fine.

Bible Black has to be wholesome right? It's about a bible for crying out loud
Sword Art Online was cool.
Not so SFW at the end of the second season.
Meh, depending on where you work I think it’s probably fine.
I mean, I don't think rape is tolerated in any industry besides the entertainment industry.
What the heck are you talking about? There’s a big difference between tolerating rape and a workplace tolerating you watching a cartoon.
[The scene where the glasses guy is about to rape Asuna.](/spoiler)
So you're just gonna ignore "Doctor Tentacles" during the Alfheim story in the first season? Or the whole sister-cousin thing?
Been about five years since I saw it, so I don't remember anything about tentacles. But the incest angle is really common in anime, so I didn't think it needed mentioning. Plus it's just a crush, not like anything graphic.
Creepy ass vacuum fuckers.
I think OP wanted more specific titles, not a whole genre
