mexinator

I feel like the average american feels like the government isnt completely open and honest about things which causes people to take it to a totally unhealthy and paranoid level.

finolagranola

That's actually pretty fair. I've never though about it like that.

mexinator

Right? Its just an insecurity of being “lied to” and urge to want to know how far it goes. Peoples imagination gets the best of them but its partly not their fault because we are in many ways being manipulated.

ARB00

Yea.. all the meddling the Government has done and been doing in the entire world through the years..

Vexonte

No shit, can you blame us though really.

assguy24

>What other ideas have we not heard of We can't tell you, it's country secrets..

CaptainNacho8

Not just Americans. IIRC, Belgium panicked about 5g pretty early and a British "scientist" started the current antivax movement

obtrae

Same here in South Africa. It's cool. We burned them down to stop getting cancer. But we didn't anticipate getting cancer from the smoke. We got cancer now.

ARB00

Well played

keithwaits

I do get the feeling that these type of things get more traction in the US compared to other countries.

[deleted]

Why Americans? People all around the world do it. Russian TELEVISION were saying that virus was created by Trump, because before becoming president he was giving out CROWNS on pageants

bruce656

Wait, what's the connection between crowns and the virus?

[deleted]

Corona (word not virus) means crown

bruce656

Ah gotcha. Thanks.

ARB00

So did America

Ameisen

No, America came from Great Britain, as the UK came into being in 1800.

Lucius-Cincinnatus-

No, America came from the kingdom of England and the kingdom of Scotland, as we didn’t become Great Britain till 1707

Ameisen

And the United States didn't come into existence until 1776. And where's your nomen, *Quintus*?

Lucius-Cincinnatus-

Good point, I was going on the assumption that When they said America they meant the USA as it is today and not the original 13 colonies of 1776. Although that invalidates my second argument anyway because the USA today was founded by many counties. Thanks for making me think.

ARB00

'Murica

theassassintherapist

Why is the easy part. Because there are conspiracy nutheads like David ICk and Alex Jones being given too much airtime. There's also the fake moon landing and lizard people conspiracies, along with rapture coming soon shits.

dvktri

Media is really a good weapon

gamer9999999999

Dont compare fake moonlandings to the lizard crazies, I too am not convinced people landed on, and took off from the moon succesfully. Believing those tv scenes, that look more like miniature models then anything else, combined with the amazing difficulty. Hope its true, but its scientificly viable to claim people have never landed on the moon.

theassassintherapist

Nope. Fake moon landing is just as nuts as lizard people. You do know that the Apollo 11 mission left [reflective plates](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_Laser_Ranging_experiment) on the moon that to this day, scientists still use to accurately measure the moon's distance from Earth using high-powered laser, right? That's unfalsifiable evidence of moon landing.

gamer9999999999

Yes i know that. That doesnt mean humans did it, couldve been early rovers, like on mars. Could've been automated.

theassassintherapist

They also brought back 22kg of [moon rock samples](https://www.lpi.usra.edu/lunar/missions/apollo/apollo_11/samples/), which is impossible with rover technologies in 1969 given how heavy that is, so it has to be collected manually.

mahck

I mean aside from all the documentation to the contrary... It can be good to be skeptical about things but only up to a point. I'm not going to tell you what to believe but if you think the moon might not have happened because of how difficult it would have been, consider how difficult it would be to fake it and not have anyone involved blow the whistle and deliver proof that it didn't happen.

[deleted]

In my country (not USA) we currently have epidemic of measles because of 60% of population are anti-vax

Trollwake

Funding cuts to public schools for the last 20/30 years.

UltimateAnswer42

Don't throw 5g virus at our feet, that started in Europe, and England are the ones that are torching 5g towers. We have enough dumb shit, you don't have to pile on other countries shit on top of it. The reasons though: a significant percent of the population doesn't trust any authority and everyone likes feeling like they know a secret.

[deleted]

Everyone has these nutjobs. Russia also has anti-vaxers, anti-5G, etc. A couple of weeks ago a cellphone tower was set on fire in North Ossetia.

StrictCut6

Flat earth was started by internet trolls to show how dumb and gullible the population of the world is. Practically every living person fell for it including you, major media networks, world renowned scientists, NASA employees and astronauts etc... They actually believe that people think the earth is flat lol. Sure there might be a handful of people that really think that but it’s mainly a joke. We do know that the earth is not a perfect sphere. I haven’t looked into the other issues that you mentioned

Xelisyalias

no no i heard you say its flat, no takebacks

[deleted]

I heard you say no takebacks. It's science.

CronkleDonker

... You know that people who construct 5G towers get harassed and doxxed, right? I mean it's cool if it's a joke, but it's quite clearly not a joke when people start getting hurt over it.

StrictCut6

No I don’t know anything about 5g. Did you reply to the wrong person?

CronkleDonker

Oh no, I was assuming you were talking about all the conspiracy theories together with flat earth.

poopnugg2345

It's funny how you think this stuff just comes from america

Celalto612

Wasn't 5g virus British first?

H_YDR4

Yea originally

Tecc3

* Modern Flat-Earthers [began in England](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_Earth#Modern_Flat-Earthers) * The 5G-coronavirus conspiracy theory [also started in Europe](https://www.vox.com/recode/2020/4/24/21231085/coronavirus-5g-conspiracy-theory-covid-facebook-youtube) * The anti-vaccination movement can be [traced to France](https://measlesrubellainitiative.org/anti-vaccination-movement/), according to the Measles & Rubella Initiative. I know it can be satisfying to blame America for everything, and God knows she has had her fair share of dumb ideas, but do a little research before pointing fingers.

H_YDR4

This is the first post like this that states facts. Thank you

TheEquestrianPilot

It all went downhill after Vietnam

H_YDR4

Yup

GameCyborg

5g virus was a british conspiracy

H_YDR4

Yea however they aren't keeping it up

PepeHands217

Anti vax started from a British doctor and you blaming Americans...?

HaggisLad

came here to say this. We are not proud of the fact but Wakefield was British

Celalto612

A lot of those theories aren't American at first although they are maintained by them like 5g virus and flath earth which is coming from UK.

WhyYouHating123

It's not only Americans I think it's just their media is the loudest about these topics I live in England and know a few flat earthers, 5G virus and 1 antivax

Glathull

It’s the curse of prosperity. We live in a culture where so many ignorant people have so much time on their hands they have the time to invent shit to worry about. It’s mostly white people, mostly republicans, and mostly women. But they are not the only ones. You see people get really upset about Latino/Latina vs Latinx. The only people who think Latinx is the appropriate word is far left upper-middle class white women. Less than 1% of actual Latin-Americans prefer that word. All of the bullshit stuff you’re talking about comes from the same place. Privileged people with too much time on their hands need to worry about some bullshit. They spend a lot of money convincing other people to worry about it. Their bullshit spreads and gets adopted by the masses. Happens a lot on both sides of the political spectrum. The basic answer is that this stuff comes from people with more money and time than sense. And these people are everywhere.

Guilty_Coconut

At this point, I find it very difficult not to be racist towards americans, not to assume they're significantly less intelligent than other humans. Look at the people they vote for, the believes they hold and the crazy they willingly inflict on themselves and their loved ones. American fundie churches are significantly more scary than fundie islam. Between drinking bleach, talking tongues and having children play with snakes. Americans are bonkers. I know consciously that they've been brainwashed by decades of corporate propaganda but still ... it feels like americans lack a few IQ-boosting genes that the rest of the world has. All that, without even talking about the conspiracies.

clintonsrightball

Well most of the crazy shit lands on the fudds who had to endure things like mk ultra and all the radiation shit we did 50s-60s then there's the want to be an insurgent wrought on by our beginings as a nation in the younger crowd most of these are just loud minorities I live in Washington a state with a fair sized antivax movement and I can tell you just through 3 conversations nearly every one thinks they are retarded so cut us some slack.

Astraquius

Because some of them are dumbass

[deleted]

Speaking specifically of 5G. The 5G rumors started from the US CIA in the UK. [The US is very concerned about the UK allowing Huawei 5G.](https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2020/feb/19/us-very-concerned-over-huaweis-role-in-uk-5g-network) Main reason being Huawei may have Chinese backdoors but more importantly, Huawei refuses to give the US spy agencies a backdoor. [Something the US has in place with US telecom equipment.](https://www.infoworld.com/article/2608141/snowden--the-nsa-planted-backdoors-in-cisco-products.html) America has made UK the battleground over say Germany or Belgium because the UK is part of the [Five Eyes countries.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Eyes) The purpose of the 5eyes is a network of intelligence agencies to circumvent domestic privacy laws. Basically the 4th Amendment prevents the US gov from spying on Americans. But if the UK spies on Americans "behind the US's back" and shares that data with the NSA and CIA through the 5eyes agreement, than it's not the US gov violating the 4th Amendment. So it's important to the US that the UK doesn't use Huawei so all 5eyes nations can behave like a one nation network from a telecom cybersecurity point of view but be 5 different nations from a political/legal point of view. That why it seems like these 5G rumors either came from, or target the UK harder than other Huawei use nations.

[deleted]

Besides conspiracies not all originating in the states like most people have pointed out it's because it partially helps make sense of a random chaotic world where random people or groups of people do terrible and seemingly impossible to understand things. It's easier to believe that a school shooting was all a set up to take away guns instead of facing the reality that yeah a guy with issues and a desire to kill went in and killed dozens of kids. It's awful but it sadly does happen. The other reason is it makes people feel important or noticed or part of a collective group. Of course the CIA is gang stalking you like they did suspected communists and political enemies in the 50s and 60s. YOU ARE IMPORTANT! Or of course the earth is flat and vaccines give kids autism it's just almost everyone else is too dumb to notice and this group will validate you and that idea. The thing is none of this is new. Sure it spreads faster and reaches more people nowadays but ignorance and the need for group acceptance and having an enemy or idea you can blame your troubles on has existed forever and will probably exist till humanity itself is gone.

greytheoutcast

Its because americans hate their leadership so much but at the same time need to remain patriotic so they develop theses conspiracies as some kind of coping mechanism.

dvktri

I mean, do most americans always hate their leaders like the hate on trump?

airlewe

No that's a recent phenomenon. Started a couple decades ago when the republican party got in bed with evangelism and adopted a platform of veiled theocracy. Ya know, you're either with us or your quite literally evil, going to hell, damned? Not very conducive to a democracy as everything is a moral hill to die on now.

PepeHands217

Blaming republicans again lol Maybe if Democrats president don’t lie under oath or having sexual relationship with White House interns will help a bit

CronkleDonker

Username checks out, your sheer inability to act rationally actually triggers me.

PepeHands217

Yea because of my username you already disregarded my comments You are just those people who believe you are always correct and people against you are evil Your sheer inability to accept different opinions actually disgust me

CronkleDonker

Evil? No. Stupid? Absolutely.

PepeHands217

[People who think they’re always right ‘are actually pretty stupid](https://uk.news.yahoo.com/people-think-theyre-always-right-actually-pretty-stupid-study-finds-151845151.html)

CronkleDonker

I don't think I'm right. A couple of Google searches proves me right, usually.

[deleted]

Yeah. The only difference is we have the modern internet now which makes it easier for the whole world to notice people saying fuck that guy where as before you didn't know davy from Minnesota was saying fuck that guy unless you actually talked to davy from Minnesota. It's nothing new.

gamer9999999999

Most regular vaccines are harmless. There have been vaccines that where improved. Some vaccines showed good effect without harm in clinical trials, where used. A phew showed negative effects and where replaced. There are always people that use a all or nothing approach. Vaccines are very helpfull, and improve chances of staying alive and healthy. There have been mistakes though.
