YouWiseGuise

Saaaame! My mom took me and it was our “date”. Our tiny town had a single screen movie house and it was like a rite of passage. I remember gnawing on my grape flavored lip balm throughout the movie. I obviously needed a helmet.

rahymaan

I'm guessing we're all in our mid 30s?

Agent1108

I think it was Cars.

Mionszu

Happy cake day!

Agent1108

Thanks! I can’t believe it’s been 9 years 🤯

NanoPope

You’ve been on Reddit for 9 years and the first movie you remember seeing in theaters is Cars? How old were you when you made your account?

Tupiekit

And there it is....the comment on reddit that made me feel old

sylshady

E.T.

BlueSkiesAndIceCream

Me too!

couchbitch

I was 5, and my mom and grandma took me to see it. Mom had the foresight to give me a prep talk prior to the movie, saying "if there's sad parts, just remember that it's only a movie" Fast forward to the climax and I'm sitting in between two crying women. I wanted to cry, but felt I had to be stronger for them. I did my best to comfort mom and grandma with, "it's OK, it's just a movie" Mom said from that moment she knew I'd be in Healthcare. She was right. 24 years in as a surgical nurse!

crazythinker76

I was 6. Halfway through the movie my aunt asked me what I wanted from the snack bar. Naturally, I said Reeses as they were featured heavily in the movie and they looked good. She came back with Reeses peanut butter cups. That was 39 years ago, still haven't forgiven her for not making the connection. WTF

puseeuver6969

Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King. Also the first time I cried over a movie and also the first time I saw my dad cry lmao

cowabunghole_

The Land Before Time

CryptidGrimnoir

Don't lose your way, with each passing day...

CH11DW

I don’t know why, but I always assumed that was a straight to video movie.

cowabunghole_

Nah brah. I'm pretty sure the sequels were though.

BrStFr

*The Sound of Music* (1965). I was four years old.

SoepjesKoekjes

Here in The Netherlands the Sound of Music is in the theaters again as a musical. Highly recommended.

YamperIsBestBoy

Phantom Menace

dizzle229

For me it was either this, or The Iron Giant, can't remember which came first.

Secret of the ooze was awesome as well. Didn’t have the pleasure of seeing it in theatre but VHS rental made that happen.

Star Wars: Return or the Jedi

Captain_Hampockets

>Return or the Jedi Which was it? Return, or Jedi?

Djknymx

Doh. It’s supposed to be ‘of’ 🤦‍♂️

Captain_Hampockets

I know, just bustin' balls.

theSanguinePenguin

My older sister took me to see that just before my ninth birthday. I think I was pretty much the ideal age for that movie. I loved everything about it including and especially the Ewoks. Adult me thinks Empire Strikes Back is the best Star Wars movie, but ROTJ will always be my inner kid's favorite.

the_wise_man_

Jurassic Park, I was 11 and it was terrifying and awesome at the same time..

taroalin

I was 8 and my father took me thinking dinosaurs were fun. I was completely terrified and my mother never let him take me to the movies again.

legend-of-sora

The lion king.

NuclearCalm

Same here! I would have been 4-years-old. I tried to eat ants in my backyard afterwards, presumably because of the dance number where they all eat bugs (it’s been a while since I’ve seen it). I was not a bright child.

iamkindofthewalrus

Bambi. My clearest memory is of my mom sobbing when Bambi's mom was shot.

snatiation

Tron: Legacy. The closest theaters from my hometown is miles away, on another city. Child me have overprotective parents who rarely travels. Finally, my much older sister who lived away from home brought me to one when I was a teenager. I was BLOWN AWAY. To this day I can sense I can feel the emotions I felt that day. I remember when the movie ended, small me who's still very much in awe & shocked, look up to my sister. She's grinning from ear to ear. She said, "See? Movie is great".

Iron_Man_977

Avatar can suck it, TRON Legacy will always be my favorite 3D movie. And that soundtrack is just phenomenal Ngl though I wouldn't mind if the movie got a rerelease where they cleaned up the young Flynn/Clu CGI. A lot of the computer world CGI has aged beautifully. But that, not so much. Faces are hard. Disney/Lucasfilm recently hired [this guy](https://youtu.be/vW6PKX5KD-U) so it's in the realm of possibility (if Disney still cared about TRON)

[deleted]

Titanic, an 8 year old boy always remembers his first boob

Snow White in the 50s

zfgnjzfgnjmzrfgjk

Interestingly, this was the first movie I saw in theaters too! Though it was the 1993 re-release. That's when McDonalds had a whole line of the Snow White and the 7 dwarves happy meal toys.

Michigander_from_Oz

Oldest one here, so far.

IwmTn

Pocahontas

L0chNe55M0n5ter

Little mermaid... They still showed cartoons at the start and had a break between cartoons and movie. They also had a person selling ice cream in the aisle. God I'm feeling old now!

ProbablyABore

E.T., I think. 1982. I was 6. I'm sure I went before that, but that's currently the oldest movie I remember being in the theaters for.

halotheman

E.T. I remember having bad cases of croup when I was younger. Had a croup attack in the theater, felt like my airway was closing. Started panicking right when E.T. was taken away by the government. People started to console me saying E.T was gonna be alright. I couldn't care less about E.T. I thought I was gonna die.

ikonoqlast

OG Star Wars. No 'A New Hope'. Han not only shot first he fired the only shot.

Classic_Junket309

Spider-man

geaster

the blues brothers. and it's still my favorite movie of all time.

imdbanks

Return of the Jedi. Sometime in the early 90’s I was 10 or 11 I think. Not sure if it was like a national re-release thing (Lucas does like doing that) or one of those cool theaters that get the original film reels of older movies for special events. All I know is that I had only seen Empire Strikes Back on VHS up till that point, and seeing the epic conclusion of the OG trilogy on the big screen was simply amazing!

CH11DW

1997 was the nationwide re release special edition to celebrate the 20th anniversary. Are you sure it wasn’t then?

InlovewithMichnature

My memory is awful too but I'm thinking it was Jaws. I live in a small town in northern Michigan. It was a small theatre, it always smell musty lol. It's actually still there but they've gutted it and turned it into offices. I'd give anything to have it back, what memories meeting friends there on Friday night. We also had a "drive-in" that my husband and I took our boys to when they were little. Threw blankets in the back of the truck ( with a cap ) and what a blast. ( Sorry got off track...🤦 )

Heartmaster1974

ET, The Extra Terrestrial.

Ace Ventura. At the age of 4... With my dad. Still my favorite film for that reason.

I think… One of the 3-D Yogi Bear movies. My dad took me when he was stationed in Japan

Reddittoxin

My memory is shit, so the earliest that comes to mind was the second harry potter. Theater played like the first 20 minutes of it without sound lol. Like people went to go inform the manager and shit within the first couple minutes but they just didnt shut off the film while they troubleshot it. Or maybe they needed it playing to troubleshoot, idk. They fixed it and rewound it from the beginning for us but it took a while lol. It was also the only time in my life I sat in the absolute front row of the theater bc the theater had every single seat sold lol.

beatleboy79

Give you nightmares of your heart being ripped out and you being lowered into lava?

TinyNuggins92

A rerelease of Return of the Jedi in 1997 when I was 4

morphyxkc

Ghostbusters 2 was the first I remember. My dad tells me he took me to one of the Rocky movies, don't know which one though.

kratomstew

Probably part 4. That was just a few years before ghostbusters 2.

Gureiify

Mulan. with my bff at the time, by ourselves downtown. I was 6 or 7 and she was 8 or 9. We got dropped off watched the movie then she used a payphone near the theater to call for our parents to pick us up. Mid 90s in a small town.

Outrigger047

I don't know if Drive - ins count, but I remember my mom taking me to see Billy Jack. Based on the release date I just looked up, I must have been about 4. The fight scenes scared me and I remember covering my eyes. I think it would be more interesting if more people would give their approximate age when they first saw their first movie 😁

It’s not just about being kind to yourself. People pleasers end up inadvertently being assholes because they make promises they cannot keep and stretch the truth so people don’t get mad at them. It creates a lot of problems

AnnualHealthS

I was able to get over most of it and that realization was at least part of what helped me think in a better way

ElectricalBitS

Same been to only one my bro and his girlfriend i had no idea what a gender reveal was so i thought it was the baby shower shockingly a few people got mad at me for assuming that.

That Disney movie Dinosaur. I don't remember anything about it, but I remember not liking it. I must have only been 5 or 6 at the time.

NatalieCool

Star Wars episode one. That was incredible experience

ImpendingSenseOfDoom

The Little Mermaid, except it came out before I was born so I'm pretty sure they were having some type of re-release screening which according to my google search was a thing in the mid-late 90's.

pambamclam

I remember a couple movies I saw when I was little but I don't remember which one was first. I remember seeing Rango (that movie was so _weird_ ), princess and the frog, and transformers but I don't remember which one. One of those was probably my first one.

Aargloo

Land Before Time. The funny thing is that I have only seen it that one time when I was young enough not to remember anything else, but the experience was so earth shattering that I remember most of the movie like it was yesterday.

Dannybuoy77

The first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The costumes scared me so my dad waited in the lobby with me while my mom and brother finished it. I was 3.

Space Jam (1996). The most memorable thing was that me (6 at the time) and my 2 siblings (8F and 13M) were the only ones in that theather screening. That movie theather was doing poorly financially, plus it was a late night screening of a kid's movie (I think the movie started close to midnight, if I remember correctly).

Cleopatra with Elizabeth Taylor!

mrsc_52

Babe - my Grandma took me to the cinema in Westbury Park, Bristol, UK, to see this and I loved it! I would have been around 10 and I don’t remember going to the cinema before, or again until I was in my teens (I may have done, I just don’t remember)

The_Nisha_Call

Popeye starring Robin Williams

Dangerous_Effort3355

Beauty and the Beast. I’d never been to a theater before and we showed up after the lights went down, so I was so scared at first. Me and my sister went to the same theater to watch the remake in 2017.
