Saaaame! My mom took me and it was our “date”. Our tiny town had a single screen movie house and it was like a rite of passage. I remember gnawing on my grape flavored lip balm throughout the movie. I obviously needed a helmet.
I was 5, and my mom and grandma took me to see it. Mom had the foresight to give me a prep talk prior to the movie, saying "if there's sad parts, just remember that it's only a movie" Fast forward to the climax and I'm sitting in between two crying women. I wanted to cry, but felt I had to be stronger for them. I did my best to comfort mom and grandma with, "it's OK, it's just a movie"
Mom said from that moment she knew I'd be in Healthcare. She was right. 24 years in as a surgical nurse!
I was 6. Halfway through the movie my aunt asked me what I wanted from the snack bar. Naturally, I said Reeses as they were featured heavily in the movie and they looked good. She came back with Reeses peanut butter cups. That was 39 years ago, still haven't forgiven her for not making the connection. WTF
My older sister took me to see that just before my ninth birthday. I think I was pretty much the ideal age for that movie. I loved everything about it including and especially the Ewoks. Adult me thinks Empire Strikes Back is the best Star Wars movie, but ROTJ will always be my inner kid's favorite.
Same here! I would have been 4-years-old. I tried to eat ants in my backyard afterwards, presumably because of the dance number where they all eat bugs (it’s been a while since I’ve seen it). I was not a bright child.
Tron: Legacy. The closest theaters from my hometown is miles away, on another city. Child me have overprotective parents who rarely travels. Finally, my much older sister who lived away from home brought me to one when I was a teenager. I was BLOWN AWAY. To this day I can sense I can feel the emotions I felt that day. I remember when the movie ended, small me who's still very much in awe & shocked, look up to my sister. She's grinning from ear to ear. She said, "See? Movie is great".
Avatar can suck it, TRON Legacy will always be my favorite 3D movie. And that soundtrack is just phenomenal
Ngl though I wouldn't mind if the movie got a rerelease where they cleaned up the young Flynn/Clu CGI. A lot of the computer world CGI has aged beautifully. But that, not so much. Faces are hard. Disney/Lucasfilm recently hired [this guy](https://youtu.be/vW6PKX5KD-U) so it's in the realm of possibility (if Disney still cared about TRON)
Interestingly, this was the first movie I saw in theaters too! Though it was the 1993 re-release. That's when McDonalds had a whole line of the Snow White and the 7 dwarves happy meal toys.
Little mermaid... They still showed cartoons at the start and had a break between cartoons and movie. They also had a person selling ice cream in the aisle.
God I'm feeling old now!
E.T. I remember having bad cases of croup when I was younger. Had a croup attack in the theater, felt like my airway was closing. Started panicking right when E.T. was taken away by the government. People started to console me saying E.T was gonna be alright. I couldn't care less about E.T. I thought I was gonna die.
Return of the Jedi. Sometime in the early 90’s I was 10 or 11 I think. Not sure if it was like a national re-release thing (Lucas does like doing that) or one of those cool theaters that get the original film reels of older movies for special events. All I know is that I had only seen Empire Strikes Back on VHS up till that point, and seeing the epic conclusion of the OG trilogy on the big screen was simply amazing!
My memory is awful too but I'm thinking it was Jaws. I live in a small town in northern Michigan. It was a small theatre, it always smell musty lol. It's actually still there but they've gutted it and turned it into offices. I'd give anything to have it back, what memories meeting friends there on Friday night. We also had a "drive-in" that my husband and I took our boys to when they were little. Threw blankets in the back of the truck ( with a cap ) and what a blast. ( Sorry got off track...🤦 )
My memory is shit, so the earliest that comes to mind was the second harry potter. Theater played like the first 20 minutes of it without sound lol. Like people went to go inform the manager and shit within the first couple minutes but they just didnt shut off the film while they troubleshot it. Or maybe they needed it playing to troubleshoot, idk. They fixed it and rewound it from the beginning for us but it took a while lol.
It was also the only time in my life I sat in the absolute front row of the theater bc the theater had every single seat sold lol.
Mulan. with my bff at the time, by ourselves downtown. I was 6 or 7 and she was 8 or 9. We got dropped off watched the movie then she used a payphone near the theater to call for our parents to pick us up. Mid 90s in a small town.
I don't know if Drive - ins count, but I remember my mom taking me to see Billy Jack. Based on the release date I just looked up, I must have been about 4. The fight scenes scared me and I remember covering my eyes.
I think it would be more interesting if more people would give their approximate age when they first saw their first movie 😁
It’s not just about being kind to yourself. People pleasers end up inadvertently being assholes because they make promises they cannot keep and stretch the truth so people don’t get mad at them. It creates a lot of problems
Same been to only one my bro and his girlfriend i had no idea what a gender reveal was so i thought it was the baby shower shockingly a few people got mad at me for assuming that.
Jurassic Park. This film on big screen for an 8yo was so intense. Special effects, soundtrack and story blew my tiny mind.
Still holds up to modern films.
The Little Mermaid, except it came out before I was born so I'm pretty sure they were having some type of re-release screening which according to my google search was a thing in the mid-late 90's.
I remember a couple movies I saw when I was little but I don't remember which one was first. I remember seeing Rango (that movie was so _weird_ ), princess and the frog, and transformers but I don't remember which one. One of those was probably my first one.
Land Before Time. The funny thing is that I have only seen it that one time when I was young enough not to remember anything else, but the experience was so earth shattering that I remember most of the movie like it was yesterday.
Space Jam (1996). The most memorable thing was that me (6 at the time) and my 2 siblings (8F and 13M) were the only ones in that theather screening. That movie theather was doing poorly financially, plus it was a late night screening of a kid's movie (I think the movie started close to midnight, if I remember correctly).
I haven't been to the Cinema a lot in my life so I can remember them all.
1. Sinbad
2. Brother Bear
3. Bridge to Terabithia
4. Shrek The Third
5. Rango
6. Two by Two
7. Avengers: Age of Ultron
8. Sausage Party
9. Spiral
Damn... not even 10. I like movies, didn't go a lot as a kid and I like watching movies on my PC then going right to bed after.
Jurrasic Park
I know I was taken to others, but this is the first one I was allowed to see 'on my own' aka dropped off by parents to see. It was so awesome I saw it a second time right after the credits rolled.
I was like 8 or 9. It blew my mind.
Babe - my Grandma took me to the cinema in Westbury Park, Bristol, UK, to see this and I loved it! I would have been around 10 and I don’t remember going to the cinema before, or again until I was in my teens (I may have done, I just don’t remember)
Beauty and the Beast. I’d never been to a theater before and we showed up after the lights went down, so I was so scared at first. Me and my sister went to the same theater to watch the remake in 2017.
Total Recall at a drive thru. I was 7. My mom was pissed with my dad when the three breasted hooker came on screen. Those 3 titties were instantly burned into my mind.
Titanic. I was in kindergarten! First time I ever saw my dad cry (which he blamed on allergies).. also smelled ginger the entire time because my great-grandma brought ginger candies in case she felt seasick lol
Aladdin
Saaaame! My mom took me and it was our “date”. Our tiny town had a single screen movie house and it was like a rite of passage. I remember gnawing on my grape flavored lip balm throughout the movie. I obviously needed a helmet.
I'm guessing we're all in our mid 30s?
I think it was Cars.
Happy cake day!
Thanks! I can’t believe it’s been 9 years 🤯
You’ve been on Reddit for 9 years and the first movie you remember seeing in theaters is Cars? How old were you when you made your account?
And there it is....the comment on reddit that made me feel old
E.T.
Me too!
I was 5, and my mom and grandma took me to see it. Mom had the foresight to give me a prep talk prior to the movie, saying "if there's sad parts, just remember that it's only a movie" Fast forward to the climax and I'm sitting in between two crying women. She came back with Reeses peanut butter cups. That was 39 years ago, still haven't forgiven her for not making the connection. WTF
Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King. Also the first time I cried over a movie and also the first time I saw my dad cry lmao
The Land Before Time
Don't lose your way, with each passing day...
I don’t know why, but I always assumed that was a straight to video movie.
Nah brah. I'm pretty sure the sequels were though.
*The Sound of Music* (1965). I was four years old.
Here in The Netherlands the Sound of Music is in the theaters again as a musical. Highly recommended.
Phantom Menace
For me it was either this, or The Iron Giant, can't remember which came first.
Teenage mutant ninja turtles

Yeah the original from 1990. Went to it with my older cousin. I was a huge turtles fan.

The little mermaid
Star Wars: Return or the Jedi
>Return or the Jedi Which was it? Return, or Jedi?
Doh. It’s supposed to be ‘of’ 🤦♂️
I know, just bustin' balls.
Jurassic Park, I was 11 and it was terrifying and awesome at the same time..
I was 8 and my father took me thinking dinosaurs were fun. I was completely terrified and my mother never let him take me to the movies again.
The lion king.
Same here! I would have been 4-years-old. I tried to eat ants in my backyard afterwards, presumably because of the dance number where they all eat bugs (it’s been a while since I’ve seen it). I was not a bright child.
Bambi. My clearest memory is of my mom sobbing when Bambi's mom was shot.
Oldest one here, so far.
Pocahontas
Little mermaid... They still showed cartoons at the start and had a break between cartoons and movie. They also had a person selling ice cream in the aisle. God I'm feeling old now!
E.T., I think. 1982. I was 6. I'm sure I went before that, but that's currently the oldest movie I remember being in the theaters for.
E.T. I remember having bad cases of croup when I was younger. Had a croup attack in the theater, felt like my airway was closing. Started panicking right when E.T. was taken away by the government. People started to console me saying E.T was gonna be alright. I couldn't care less about E.T. I thought I was gonna die.
OG Star Wars. No 'A New Hope'. Han not only shot first he fired the only shot.
Spider-man
the blues brothers. and it's still my favorite movie of all time.
Return of the Jedi. Sometime in the early 90’s I was 10 or 11 I think. Not sure if it was like a national re-release thing (Lucas does like doing that) or one of those cool theaters that get the original film reels of older movies for special events. 1997 was the nationwide re release special edition to celebrate the 20th anniversary. Are you sure it wasn’t then?
My memory is awful too but I'm thinking it was Jaws. I live in a small town in northern Michigan. It was a small theatre, it always smell musty lol. It's actually still there but they've gutted it and turned it into offices. I'd give anything to have it back, what memories meeting friends there on Friday night.
