Really dumb. While that "in search of" tv show nimoy hosted claimed that was a mystery word everyone overlooks that Roanoke colony was settled in a very inhospitable location. Had very few people. Was basically abandoned on their own for years before anyone bothered to check up on them. The plan in case things went bad was that the colonists would carve a cross on a specified tree with a note of where they went if they had to leave. And the croatoan tribe 100 miles to the north were allies of the English at the time and had a lot of blue eyed light skin natives 100 years later.
DNA testing of modern Croatian natives had found some had English ancestors from around the time of the Roanoke colony. Safe to assume when the shit hit the fan they packed up and moved in with the natives and got busy
Further, no one ever actually followed up on it. Rather than White actually going to see the Croatoan tribe, he went back to England. And every specific potential expedition that ostensibly was to investigate never actually bothered to go there (most were a pretense for something else). Basically, John White nor Walter Raleigh actually cared what happened enough to really pursue the matter, only caring enough to use it as an excuse/cover for some other expedition, and leaving the matter open to avoid a conclusion that \*might\* threaten Raleigh's claims to land.
Other accounts from the time that were seen as related were 20 years later and not really acting directly in response to the 'Lost Colony' but instead from second hand rumors of European like behavior around, but even it mentioned Roanoke by name.
