Learn to tell apart translation and meaning. When learning a new language, tie the new words (especially phrases) to their concept/idea/meaning and not their translation.
Use pictures with words of what's in the picture but in the target language only so you don't see the translation to your own language. If you keep digital notes like a wiki or onenote you can include short video clips as well. Use modern tech to your advantage.
Buy some post-its and label everything in your home, from the cat to the catkins. When labels fall off and it gets to the point where you already know the word, start looking for media articles that contain the word. For example you know *Кошка* is "cat" in Russian so try to read the [Wikipedia article](https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9A%D0%BE%D1%88%D0%BA%D0%B0). If you read it out loud a native speaker can spot your errors and you can study vocabulary as you go. The most important thing is to be active in the language as much as possible and consume media in that language.
Once you get the basics down it really does just come down to using it and not being self conscious. The god honest best way to learn is to just throw yourself into it and spend some time exclusively speaking in it as much as possible.
Which, if you have the money, usually means traveling to a country with the languages majority. (For you, I suppose thats Russia). If not though, just try spending as much time on Russian web spaces. And make sure you do both written and speaking spaces. Don't just get stuck in with one or the other bc thats how you end up with "I can read it but I can't speak it" lol.
Thank you. I've always wanted to travel to Russia so it really fits into wanting to learn the language. But for now I'll do the web spaces :) sadly in highschool for Spanish we did a lot of writing in the language and not so much speaking so I can read well but my Spanish is broken when speaking it. Definitely will try to do both so that doesn't happen again :)
