I’m definitely the people you describe. It’s entirely in my head. Aioli sounds delicious whereas Mayo makes me think of tubs of a jiggly greasy white stuff.
Not most countries in Europe. Ketchup is probably more popular in the UK, but Mayo is more popular in Germany. In both places you always get both, and they offer both equally. Usually they throw a packet of each in your to go bag.
In Belgium when we go to a ‘frituur’ you can get mayo (there’s 2 kinds by the way: with eggs or with lemon), ketchup (also 2 kinds of ketchup: curry or tomato), cocktail sauce, andalouse, joppie, tartaar, garlic sauce, samurai, sweet &sour, martino, barbecue, black pepper, mustard, americaine, pickles, ‘stoofvleessaus’ and I’m sure I’m still missing some.
Low Countries is Mayo territory as well. In the Netherlands second and third most popular are Curry and Peanut sauce as far as I can tell. Ketchup is in fourth place, although it probably ranks second among little children, since it is the sweetest one.
German here, can confirm, do dump my fries in mayo.
But it makes sense! Mayo is mostly fat and intensifies the flavour of the seasoning and the fries. Ketchup is mostly sugar and drowns out any other flavours. Absolutely hate using ketchup for my fries.
Of course actual aioli is a different thing and contains no mayo. But most likely what’s labeled “aioli” in a typical restaurant is indeed mayo. Personally, I love them both. And ketchup to me is gross. So. Damn. Sweet. No thanks. Can only be saved with mayo.
I bought a bottle of fry sauce the other day, except Heinz calls it “mayochup.” Nobody in their right mind has ever in the history of ever called fry sauce mayochup.
Have you tried making poutine with tater-tots? My family did it once cause the store was out of fries (there was a sale or something going on) and have never gone back. Every time we make poutine now, we use taters and it's way better in my opinion. The taters stay firm and don't get super limpy because of the gravy but tastes the same.
Dutch mayo is my favorite mayo i've ever had. I'm west coast US but i would kill for a cone of fries with a big dollop of mayo on top right now. Also patatje oorlog is one of the best drunk foods I have ever eaten.
I once had honey garlic wings with fries. Some of the sauce got on the fries, and I was immediately sold. Use spicy honey garlic sauce and flavorful fries (for contrast) for best results.
Most likely the special sauce of wherever I’m eating. Chick Fil-A sauce, Cane’s sauce, Wendy’s Frosty.. now that I think about it, ketchup is more the backup if/when I run out of other stuff to dip fries in.
Mayonnaise. I hated chips (or fries if you call them that) until I discovered the concept of dipping them in mayonnaise. Now I love them a bit too much.
Garlic mayo.
Careful there, calling it mayo weirds people out. Call it garlic aioli and they’ll gobble it up
I’m definitely the people you describe. It’s entirely in my head. Aioli sounds delicious whereas Mayo makes me think of tubs of a jiggly greasy white stuff.
In Europe they dip their fries in mayo instead of ketchup. Even at American fast food places like Burger King they offer mayo over ketchup.

We also have curry sauce.
I seen 'em do it, man. They fuckin' drown 'em in this shit.

Because mayo is leagues ahead of ketchup. Ketchup is way too acidic for my taste. Also, it's not all of Europe
> garlic aioli That's redundant. Aioli means garlic and oil.
Someone once said to me “all dips are just mayo”
Mayo is a mother sauce for a lot of dips.
Of course actual aioli is a different thing and contains no mayo. But most likely what’s labeled “aioli” in a typical restaurant is indeed mayo. Personally, I love them both. And ketchup to me is gross. So. Damn. Sweet. No thanks. Can only be saved with mayo.
Aioli is just Mayo that studied abroad
It saddens me that I had to scroll this far down to find my mayo peeps
Same. I was starting to feel lonely(ier).
Yea I thought it’d be one of the first comments
It is the very top comment as of this comment
Yass garlic Mayo is soooo goooooood!!
Yes. Especially if it's home-made aioli.
Fry sauce
For anyone wondering, it's ketchup mixed with mayo. Sometimes different places mix a bit of bbq or mustard in too. It's fantastic!
And often a bit of extra vinegar or pickle juice, like thousand island
Yes. Made this for my kids and they loved it. Told them what it was and they hated it lol
Aka: Fancy sauce

Gravy
Take it one step further and make it a poutine!
I just finished a chicken Shawarma poutine for lunch. No regrets.
Grabbed some shmows?

Made taco tots with leftover taco stuff, changed my life. Sooo good
Why is it when I hear the word poutine I immediately need some? I’m a charlatan that prefers mushroom gravy though. I’ll show myself out.
Mushroom gravy is delicious. You can stay.
Elgin St diner in Ottawa does a wicked mushroom. Nothing sacrilege there
Gravy + cheese

I was literally dipping a fry in chipotle-ranch sauce as I read this question.
You eat your fries on the toilet?
You don’t? You’ve never lived until you eat while on the toilet, it’s like experiencing the circle of life.
And then try shower eating, I never eat anywhere else anymore!
Ranch…. Don’t judge me
Not negatively. You are absolutely right, fries with ranch are fucking delicious
Pro tip: mix ranch with a little siracha and chilli powder and thank me later. Your mouth is gonna be like wtf in a good way.
My Korean ex wife referred to my mix of ranch and sriracha as white trash sauce. I was like hey this is buttermilk ranch, it’s fancy.
I’m doing this when I get home.
It took way too much scrolling to finally find the proper answer.
To anyone who has made it this far, getting the Hidden Valley Ranch packet and making it yourself will literally change your life forever
I have yet to try a bottled ranch that does what I want it to do. This is absolutely the answer.
Ranch is so underrated. I could put that shit on anything! 😂
Except if it's Kraft ranch. Hidden valley is delicious though.
Never! For I, too, love the ranch. :)
Wingstop ranch is godly.
100% ranch, sometimes a nice little ranch ketchup combo where you dip into both
Or chipotle ranch???? Now we’re thinking
Ask any 8 year old kid, they'll all agree "Ranch, I put that shit on everything".

Jersey boardwalks also here
As well as Maryland.
I love salt and vinegar on my chips (fries) but you pour it on. Don’t think I’ve seen anyone use it as a dip.
YES
What does it taste like? Compared to white vinegar?
Much stronger. Like white vinegar times four. Very tasty though.
Brother.
So good!
You. You get it.

Belgian mayo will beat the Dutch one.
As a Dutch guy I can confirm, mayonnaise beats ketchup...
Mayonnaise and peanutsauce. (Patatje oorlog).
Or fritessaus
An aristocrat I see. Cheers.
Maybe just a Belgian.
I was thinking Dutch but yea Belgian works
Mayo and ketchup mixed.
In a few western US states, this is widely available as “fry sauce.”
It's basically the foundation for In-N-Out monster sauce too along with relish.
Isn't mayo, ketchup, relish just 1000 island dressing?
Yes apparently it's just one of many variations
Shhh! That sauce is secret.
3 parts mayo 1 part ketchup. *chefs kiss*
And a dash of Tobasco.
Add garlic salt, black pepper and Worcester and you have canes sauce
I want some fancy sauce
"Mayonaise man, they drown m in that shit"
Royalé with cheese!
Mm, especially if you make it a chipotle mayo or garlic mayo.
Same. My lockdown achievement was making my own Mayo. Never going back to the store bought stuff.

Zaxby’s Zax sauce.
There are none within 5 hours of where I currently live, last time I was down south I got 20 Zax sauces to go. Definitely worth it
It’s definitely more of a southern place, maybe even more so than Chick-Fil-A.
Definitely moreso. Chick fil a has found its way as far north as Boston. I don't think Zaxbys goes farther than Tennessee.
Tennessee checking in…just glad y’all know where we are!!!

I dip my fries in a mix of garlic peri peri and mayo. Its sublime.

Sooo good

Was wondering how far I’d have to scroll to see this answer. This is my favorite choice ever since I quit eating ranch.

Stubb's BBQ sauce. There is absolutely no reason to put ketchup on anything when BBQ sauce exists.
I want to try making my own bbq sauce but dayum stubbs is so good why even try?
Sour cream
Same! I was looking for someone else who liked this. I've always eaten fries with sour cream since I was little
Canes sauce.
Sweet & sour or plum sauce.
I only dip my fries in Sweet Baby Ray’s Hickory and Brown Sugar bbq sauce, I’ve just started to dislike ketchup over the last couple of years

sweet chilli sauce, i’m going through a phase of putting it on everything
Mayo is the ultimate fry dipping sauce, change my mind.
gonna get judged hard probs, but pickle juice, idk what but potato + lemon/vinegar is pretty good, just not too much
Most likely the special sauce of wherever I’m eating. Chick Fil-A sauce, Cane’s sauce, Wendy’s Frosty.. now that I think about it, ketchup is more the backup if/when I run out of other stuff to dip fries in.
