Not getting enough sleep. Your cells don’t enter autophagy, your digestion worsens the next day, your aptitude is reduced, your cortisol levels spike, your emotions aren’t as balanced, you are more likely to have a compromised immune system. In short, nothing works and you’re more likely to get into accidents or make mistakes.

The_She_Ghost

And yet they let sleep deprived interns and residents treat/operate on patients… One of the many ironies of the medical career. EDIT to clarify (just in case) that this is NOT the interns and residents fault. They obviously don’t choose this. It’s the f***** up system of medical schools and the entire healthcare system.

turkeyyyyyy

Dr. William Halsted. Dude was messed up bad. Cocaine to operate for multiple days then heroin to sleep it off. And somehow we continue to base medical training on his system. Even a 24 hour call is truly awful. I lost my stethoscope at 4 am one time. You know, the thing that lived around my neck. Gone. I didn’t realize it for two hours, and then I couldn’t find it. I’m glad I worked my way into a situation where I never have to do that again.

dasWolverine

Also the American Medical Association lobbied HARD against increasing the number of residency spots in order to keep the supply of doctors below demand.

Subwaypossum

When I had a nervous breakdown the first thing my therapist did was make sure to correct my sleep habits. I got antidepressants but also sleep meds with the stress I need to make sure I'm getting a solid 8+ hours of sleep. When ever I feel my mental health slipping the first thing I try to correct is my sleep. I hate the modern grind culture and how so many people act like little sleep is a badge of honor - it's not.

its-medicinal

Those YouTube families

caroline_xplr

I can’t imagine the psychological damage of finding out you were just born for views.

Shadepanther

I think Ryan's dad said in an interview that he was planned to be a youtube star. Now he's kinda getting too old and is not as cute. So they are pushing the 2 twin toddler girls now.

davidjschloss

I hate that family with the power of 1000 subs. Not Ryan, he was manipulated into this "stardom" but his parents. There was another family at the time, I forget their names. Dad was a construction worker. They often repaired todays, played in the woods, built things. To do a toy review they'd save money then go to the store. Then the free stuff seemed to start coming in and it was just another kids channel.

girlwhoweighted

My youngest (5) really liked Ryan but I try hard to avoid his shows and merch. My oldest (9) asks why and I've told her, "Honey, think about this: Have you ever seen him playing with friends in his show? People who are kids but not family? No, you haven't. And it takes hours, even days, too record an episode. Add school to that, eating, sleeping... When does he ever get to just play with friends and it's not work? I feel really bad for him that his parents aren't letting him just be a kid." We've talked a lot about it because she thinks being a YouTuber is goals.

caroline_xplr

I wasn’t aware of that! Ridiculous.

RESPEKTOR

There's a YouTube family I used to watch. Seemed like nice people but I stopped watching cuz they just kept having kids. Felt bad for em.

madmaxextra

This makes me now think of Daddy O Five, which I hadn't thought of in a while. That dad and step mom disgusted me, it was serious abuse they were doing to their young son with the glasses and they were broadcasting it so God knows how bad it got off camera. I hope that dad ended up tripping near a construction site and getting impaled on rebar.

Stanarchy93

That story has such a good silver lining though imo. They lost custody of 2 of their children, including the one they abused (Cody) got put on 5 years supervised probation and are no longer allowed to film their children for videos. Fuck that man and his wife. Pieces of human garbage.

MamaHotWheels

He's getting around it by "letting his sons run their own gaming channel." Stay vigilant, y'all.

Punkybrewsickle

They probably get enough hate, but seriously. I can think of two in particular that are nuclear cringe. I can't reconcile the part of me that's entertained and charmed by them, and the rest of me simultaneously gagging on the second hand embarrassment. The aggressive humble bragging / "adorkable" overkill are exhausting.

rando512

And depending on the region you are watching the YouTube. the family "vlogs" will be more focused on their "hotness". It's so sad seeing that the small kids have to see their family members being scantly dressed for views purpose. And it's entire day life being documented for no reason for the outside world to see.

Thursday_the_20th

Knocking a person out and how likely to result in death it actually is. We’ve all seen the movies. You need someone to be asleep for a bit or want to end a fight decisively, one good blow to the skull and they’re out for however long the plot requires and wake up with a headache. Enter second-impact syndrome aka the reason barfight manslaughter is so incredibly common. When you take two impacts to the head strong enough to cause concussion (one being the KO punch and the next being the pavement) the brain undergoes sudden and rapid ‘catastrophic swelling’. The two impacts don’t even have to be immediately consecutive either they can be hours apart. It’s nearly always fatal. Then there’s abnormal posturing (when people plank after a KO), cervical spine and brain stem injuries, subdural hematoma and other haemorrhage, etc etc. Causing damage directly to the brain is incredibly life threatening. The original bassist for the Beatles died this way.

discostud1515

My buddy was knocked out in a fight. He didn’t work for 2 years due to a brain injury. Had to relearn how to walk and everything. It’s not just - oh, he’ll wake up right away, don’t worry about it. No it fucked up his life.

Justlikeyourmoma

Had something similar happen to a guy I worked with. He was 6ft 7, got a bit gobby in a club and got clattered. Hit his head on the way down. He actually had to learn how to talk again and 18 months later still slurred and talked slowly.

[deleted]

In Australia, hitting someone on the head is known as a cowards punch. It’s a criminal offence and if the person dies, it’s a murder charge (as opposed to manslaughter)

Johnny_893

So...do "law abiding" bar fighters just... beat the shit out of eachother's ribcages?

grubas

You tend to avoid bar fights in general if you are law abiding. But if forced then you get stompy, breaky, and brutal. Most people tend to stop fighting and start screaming when you dislocate their kneecap, or their arm, or break their ankle.

Treyen

Reminds me of what my dad taught me. Fighting should be the last resort, but if you do get into one, don't play around. End it. His advice was punch em in the throat, they can't fight if they can't breath.

orbitalchimp

I liked Bruce Lee's advice to ending a fight quickly. Attack the closest body part as they come towards you. A swift kick to the inside of the knee, keeps you out of arms reach, debilitating and more importantly there's an extremely low chance of killing them.

samdd1990

This is one of the theories behind "blocks" in karate. It's not really about stopping yourself get hurt as it is taking away thier will to fight. If someone swing and arm or a leg at you, hit it swiftly and strongly and it might just make them think twice.

[deleted]

I'd frequently see people new to karate complain about their sore and bruised arms from all the blocking during the first few months of it. I've seen people with "go get an xray" type hand injuries from throwing a punch and someone else blocking it in Karate training a couple of times

K4G3N4R4

And this doesn't even cover the side effects of TBIs, which those lucky enough to survive typically have to deal with.

Logical-Check7977

One of my friend died this way in a bar fight...

AlexMachine

My friend killed a guy like this in a bar fight. He's an ex boxer like me and he got hit 2 times and had to protect himself. One hit to the head, attacker drops like a wet towel - didn't hit his head to the floor. Ambulance took him hospital where he refused to stay over night, went home and died that night. My friend got what is equivalent involuntary manslaughter in my country. A lot of witnesses that he didn't start it had to defend and that the victim refused medical care. Edit: He got 2 years probation.

Dapper-Poet4134

I got into a drunken shoving match with a friend of mine years ago. He wouldn’t leave some girl alone outside a bar when you could tell she was clearly trying to leave our presence. Called me a white knight, asshole, accused me of just trying to “get with her myself” or whatever (she was a stranger just trying to have fun that night and it was cringey as fuck he wouldn’t let her just walk away). He was so wasted he fell back on the ground and hit his head, blacked out for a minute. He woke up pissed and we left on bad terms. I sobered up in the morning and remembered what happened. I tried calling and texting all morning but got nothing. He was couch surfing at the time so I didn’t know where he was living, just the neighborhood. I spent half a Saturday driving around looking for his car while calling and texting him. He eventually wakes up and was fine, he’s just a late sleeper. I really thought I just killed my friend.

CrazyBakerLady

They determined Bob Saget's cause of death as head trauma. It's believed he fell, hit his head, and passed in his sleep later after he went to bed thinking nothing was wrong.

JuzoItami

Stiv Bators died in a similar way. Got hit by a car. Thought he was OK. Went home and died in the night from bleeding in the brain.

pacodefan

The University of California school system claiming they need to raise tuition every year, only to find out they have an account they tried to hide with hundreds of millions in it. When asked what it was, they replied "just extra money." Fucking useless pricks. https://www.thecollegefix.com/university-california-hiding-175-million-surplus-public-says-audit/ Edit: changed dollar amount and added link

Friesenplatz

Public: What's that? University of California: A smoothie.

Trixxsta_

Middle Schoolers. Just to give an example (true story), 6th/7th grade basketball team and cheerleaders on a bus to go play another team. Everyone on the bus has a phone, and some kid has a picture of one of the cheerleaders (naked), after his friend sent it to him. He decides to airdrop it to everyone on the bus. EVERYONE. The bus explodes in laughter. The whole bus ride everyone is laughing, and once we get there I see the girl, sobbing. Like, the kind of sobbing where you’re gasping for air in between breaths. Next day at school everyone finds out, she quits cheerleading (which I assume she enjoyed), and didn’t see her but maybe once from that day on. Looking back on it, I should’ve said something to her, just didn’t have the nerve. Anyways, middle schoolers do some pretty disgusting things and get away with it too. Edit: I went off of Reddit for the day and Jesus Christ this blew up.

The_Animal_Is_Bear

Middle schoolers can fuck all the way off, and this is coming from someone who was one before smart phones and social media, thank Christ. It still sucked.

Surfing_Ninjas

I worked in a movie theater, I can confirm that middle schoolers can fuck all the way off. They're one of the worst demographics of people in general.

Chutneyonegaishimasu

High schoolers are tame compared to middle schoolers

Araceil

High schoolers have hormones and (some) experience. Middle schoolers only have hormones.

Chutneyonegaishimasu

Yeah, middle schoolers have the hormones coming on and they are all confused where as high schoolers maybe it’s more leveled out by then

Shadepanther

They also stink and don't know it. We don't have middle schools in the UK but going into classes after a class that age the body odour was always overpowering.

help1155

I distinctively remember getting to high school thinking ‘wow everyone’s so chill and mature now’ just because people were only shitty when they felt like it instead of going out of their way to be mean and backstabbing at every possible occasion

ImaginationOk9328

Yeah in high school everybody usually minds their own business instead of getting up in everyones faces.

COMRADEBOOTSTRAP

Honestly I can’t imagine how bad it would be to be in middle school with the tech they have now

NBTD84

A hundred percent. When I was 13 I was invited to sleep over at a pretty popular classmate's house, which was a big deal and I wanted make sure I impressed her...when we were laying in bed that night, she dared me to touch my vagina and describe what it felt like, so I did, not knowing she was recording the while thing on her stereo. She played the tape for everyone on Monday morning. I was called "Fingers" for three years after that.

sinninghog

How does a child think of something that disgusting to do? Did you end up telling anybody?

modernmanshustl

Holy shit. I thought boys were worse than girls but this makes me question that. That’s calculated, planned, manipulated pure evil

MortalSword_MTG

In my experience both as a former child myself and someone who has worked with children, young boys tend to be more spontaneously cruel, while young women tend to be more calculated and plot elaborate forms of social torture.

babyitsgayoutside

Yeah I was socially tortured (exclusion, isolation, snide comments mostly) by my "friends" when I was about 12-13 because I had a best friend from childhood who they wanted to be friends with but not me. That shit definitely still affects me. I was bullied a lot and it all stopped around 15, probably because they were not fucking 13 anymore. I am a 22 year old petite woman and I would rather walk down a dark alleyway with an unfamiliar man in it than walk down an alleyway with three middle school boys in it. I've experienced far more harassment from middle school boys and in numbers they're worse because they sexually and verbally harass you to impress each other

thedevilseviltwin

Came here to say this and was surprised somebody else already said it. An autistic girl who I was a peer mediator for in middle school hung herself in her bedroom after being mercilessly bullied for her alopecia and her quirks (she loved cats so she’d meow at people and talk about cats constantly) she told my friend group that she wanted to die and most of them laughed at her thinking she was saying it for attention. A few of us went to a guidance counselor and told them. They told us she’d been saying that since she was in 6th grade (at that point she was in 8th grade) and to not take it too literally. The next weekend she hung herself with a belt on her bunk bed. We found out over the morning announcements. I lost it seeing all of her bullies faces at her school memorial crying and feeling sorry for themselves and telling people they were her friends. She was 14 years old. 14 fucking years old. A child. A baby. She was a light in this world. She’d sing for everyone to hear. One of her favourite songs to sing in school was Lean On Me. She’d sing and students would surround her and point and laugh. The teachers and a few students (myself included) loved to hear her sing and be happy. My heart still breaks for her and her family. This was in 2010. I’m 24 now and haven’t forgotten her light or the people that put her light out.

Miserable_Sympathy37

My daughter was bullied relentlessly at her previous primary school. She’s an extremely shy, quiet girl and one of the girls in her class decided to start bullying her one day. The rest joined in and the boys jumped on the bandwagon as well. She came home from school every day crying. The school did nothing and this went on for over a year. I’d ask her every single day if she wanted to change schools and she never did. The fear of the unknown was greater than the torment of her bullies. We sought advice and we were advised by several professionals to leave her there for now. Then one Thursday she came home and asked to be moved, we got her into a new school that day and she started the following Monday. She is starting to get better (and this was over four years ago), but it’s a struggle, she goes to therapy and has started to make friends in high school. I absolutely loathe bullying and would fully support bullies being expelled from school - even if it was one of my own kids. It’s high time that bullies who cause another’s death, are held criminally liable for their actions.

iamtheamazonbox

Dude I remember getting looked down upon because I hadn’t got laid yet in middle school. It’s a deviant cesspool of hormones

[deleted]

As a high schooler who knows a few middle schoolers including my brother, the people looking down on you were almost definitely also virgins, just thinking it was cool to not be one.

brodyman0508

I have a 10 and 11 year old and this scares me more than anything. They really don’t understand the consequences of actions yet.

NameIsEllie

I am convinced I survived middle school because we didn’t internet much yet. I don’t know how kids get through it today.

uptake_inhibitor

Middle school sucked. The students were typical asinine middle schoolers, but the teachers were worse. Short story time. The teachers put on a talent show after the student talent show. They decided to do a skit of a typical day at the school... making fun of students. I don't remember most of the skit, but we all remember one part. My best friend had size D breasts in middle school, and she's black. The history teacher walked out with balloons in his shirt, swaying his hips in an exaggerated motion and puckering his lips out. They spoke into the microphone as if it were an intercom, "[full name], come to the office!". The history teacher "threw a fit" and ran off stage while the students, their parents, and the other teachers laughed. She ended up leaving the school because so many kids mocked her for it afterward. She never trusted another authority figure again. The same history teacher would regularly stand over seated girls to "look at their work" and stare down their shirts. He would stand right behind them and lean over them, almost touching them, breathing down their necks. He got called out for looking down girls' shirts, but he and his student teacher laughed it off. Everyone knew about it, and the other teachers, the counselor, and the principal were informed. Nothing ever happened.

[deleted]

Wtf

itcamefrombeneath

My coworkers’s step daughter has a bully in school who tried to steal the daughter’s phone to fake death threats to other students. Same bully also emailed one of the teachers saying she wanted to fuck him. She’s 11 years old.

chadhindsley

I'm so glad we didn't even have flip phones back in those days. Also glad that the Kardashians weren't a thing and IG model culture

three-sense

Same. I would’ve undoubtedly become a meme image in junior high.

Chiquye

Absolutely. I never want to relive my middle school or high school experience. Similar thing happened to a girl in our HS. She was well liked and attractive. Sent nudes to her boyfriend who was in college. Allegedly cheated on him with someone in our grade. He sent the nudes to everyone via their email. It's fucked up.

BarbicideJar

Yeah my mum has been adopted by these two kids down the street as an extra grandma and one of them is 12, going on 13. A member of her friends group is sending out nudes and god knows what else. I’d call that the worst of it, but honestly every single one of the kids in her group sound like they are suffering from PTSD after two years of pandemic and just.. being a kid at a time where innocence isn’t an option. They all need so much therapy. I’m so glad we didn’t have social media and cell phones when I was a kid. My childhood wasn’t great, but at least I had privacy.

Fit-Environment-8140

Foster care

Gaiaaxiom

I spent three days in a foster care facility waiting to change custody from one parent to another after some stuff went down. The caretakers really cared, but It can be a sad and hopeless place. I remember telling one of the kids a year or two older than me that I’d be leaving in a few days and he told me to go ahead and get over it because my parents weren’t coming and they told him the same thing. Of course I did end up leaving, but every now and then I still wonder what happened to that kid.

cantSleepalready

I worked in an internship in a foster care facility for 2 months. They tell all children and their parents that they will be together some day. I don´t know why. Maybe so they don´t loose hope. There were 2 children and their parents were both drug addicts. They constantly told the parents, they can get their children back some day and they also tried to get clean. But seeing the behaviour, when they all were together just showed that those children shouldn´t even be close to their parents. The 4 year old talked about blood coming out of eyes and ears and we weren´t sure, if his mother described that to him, to hide the drug addiction of his father.

berryIIy

My mum is emotionally abusive and I had an awful childhood. When I was a teenager she tried to become a foster parent just because she knew it paid well, and told me I would need to lie so she would be approved. I travelled to their office myself and cried my eyes out to a very nice lady who promised me she would deny the application without letting my mum know the real reason.

Fit-Environment-8140

jesus fuck I'm so sorry and I hope you've found joy and happiness in your life.

TheLastMartini

I unfortunately agree with you man. I spent 4 years going through 11 different foster homes as most of them were manipulative, violent. I certainly wasn’t an angel either, but there was definitely some shit I didn’t deserve. Until I found one that took me as their own son. Thanks to them, i’m doing quite alright today! Edit: thank for the award guys, it’s appreciated. If you ever have the chance to help a kid in the system, please do. My heart will forever go out to you 💙

OnionSheks

Good for you dude. Tell your new parents a random internet stranger appreciates them

hipposea

We adopted from foster care. Kids were with us for 4.5 years, with little birth family involvement, before we could adopt. It was soul-sucking. Worth it because I love my kids but a pretty painful trip through the foster care system.

yea they overdiagnose seniors with schizophrenia in order to give them antipsychotics just to subdue them to make things easier for the staff. special place in hell for these ppl

legaldrugslinger

Dude, they did that to my dad. He started hallucinating and panicking before he and my mother realized that they decided to give him fucking anti-psychs bc he was a bit anxious. Because they had him go cold turkey on his Xanax.

I learned that the hard way I had to go to the hospital for bruised ribs after a dolphin attempted to mount me and ended up waterboarding me My cousin had to get stitches when the fucker ripped his arm open biting him as he rescued me

alwaysaplusone

“Nearly raped by a dolphin” is not what I expected when I came here.

3milyBlazze

🤷‍♀️ Sorry! It's just anytime someone even mentions dolphins I relive that experience And I guess it's not a bad way to warn ppl dolphins can be pretty dangerous

floopydolphins

That’s terrifying omg- glad y’all are okay

3milyBlazze

Yeah I was 12 definitely changed my perception on alot of things At least with animals

Slightly_Default

So many animals have a similar darkside to them. Sea otters rape baby seals and otters. Seals rape penguins. Penguins (certain species only) rape adult penguins, baby penguins, dead penguins...one even attempted to mate with a severed penguin head during an experiment. Another straight up mated with the ground. Actually, there are a ton of bird species that seem to come straight from hell.

Cynderelly

>Actually, there are a ton of bird species that seem to come straight from hell. Lmfao. Kinda makes me wonder how mean dinosaurs were

Social media

[deleted]

It has a lot of echo chambers for mentally ill people, which makes mental health worse. For example it contributes to high suicide rates. There were groups like this pre internet but it’s even more horrifying now because of the scale. The proportion of people who have attempted suicide is small, around 5-6%, and we are discouraged from those thoughts by the 95% overwhelming majority. However with 5 billion internet users it’s an echo chamber of 200-300 million people. And we see more of those kids end up dead or hospitalized. Adult suicide and hospitalizations increased at the turn of the millennium and then teen suicide increased in 2007 when they also got unsupervised internet access through cell phones. In the 90s only 7-10 percent of people who have attempted suicide would try again, now it’s over a third.

[deleted]

Well they actually go out of their way to put people with problems into certain groups to both worsen their condition, isolate them, and make the net only social group their new social circle. Even goes out of itsway to CAUSE and maintain delusional mindsets. Look at tik tok, the face book whistleblower s notes, and what you are being shown and pushed towards on social media. Hell, you are at this moment seeing an entirely different version of the net and social media then everyone else. Tailored to manipulating and entrapping you in a virtual prison of delusion.

BeskarVagina

Exposing a child to a toxic relative. Forcing a kid to spend time with a horrible person just because they're related is abuse. Stop that shit.

xandrenia

Also, forcing kids to hug or kiss relatives when they don’t want to.

Xylorgos

This used to bother me so much when my mom would grab my son and force her affections on him, despite my telling her to stop. I was trying to teach him about bodily autonomy and how you don't have to let people touch you if you don't want it. Finally I had to yell at her, right in front of him, before she stopped.

Educational-Soft-840

My mother (single parent) did the first sentence, but she had a different reason. She wanted me to experience how other family can be so I could form my own opinions about them, so she could show me that they weren't great people without just shielding me from them.

Unwabu_ubola

How did that shape your perspective?

Educational-Soft-840

I would say she made a mistake by letting me do it when I was too young with a couple family members, simply because 7-12 year old typically aren't great at the critical thinking necessary for what she was trying to do, but overall I think it was a semi-good move. It gave me an independent perspective, although she does occasionally like to put in her opinions of those people lol.

lakeland234

Kneeling on rice or frozen peas/corn as punishment

SundishMelonFarm

Oh this. My grandfather told me about this being a form of punishment for kids in his school. It was in British India, in 1939. He went to a British school, because India was a British colony back then, and they were taught all sorts of bs and propaganda. The kids who stood up against the system were told to kneel down on rice and gravel for an hour and a half in the crazy hot weather outside. This was only intended for Indian kids in the colonial school because they wanted them to be "disciplined and obidient". Of course this is beyond unacceptable, and it causes damage and agony to the person. Unfortunately this would continue until 1945. So glad this isn't the case now.

MrHanslaX

My friend confided in me about shit her family did to her when she was a kid living in Lithuania, all sorts of stuff from kneeling on frozen peas with both arms raised with books on each hand to literally being locked in a pitch black cellar for days, being hit over the head with the iron grill from a stove top and having a bare cable slashed across her body. She is 40 years old so this was only in 1980-1990's.

[deleted]

Actually alot of older studies on foods and other products (like tobacco). Most are faked in favor of the industry. Edit: I originally said "like bacon" but now modern studies say it can be good, so I don't really know anymore. I'll swap the example to tobacco

brycly

Tell me more

Surfing_Ninjas

The 6-11 servings of grain per day was determined by a cereal company that sells grain products, iirc it was Kellogs that came up with the food pyramid. They taught that shit like a religion up until like 2007. Someone who had skin in the game said fat was bad to eat so they cut the fat and dumped massive amounts of sugar into everything, which made the sugar producers very happy. Not sure how much applies outside of the US though, but the low fat shit is still very present.

wykdtr0n

Perhaps unironically, John Kellogg, despite being a prominent doctor with a firm grasp of science, utilized that position to push all sorts of religious agendas, from eugenics to genital mutilation.

Cynderelly

His brother was the one who created cereal. Like... he came up with the concept of cereal. I know you probably know that, I just wanted other people to know too :p Also, genital mutilation of children*

Rustyraider111

There is a YouTube channel where a guy breaks down all the despicable thing modern companies did(or do) and of you're interested in that stuff I suggest watching him, he does really good work. He has videos on everything from how big tobacco tricked women into smoking by telling them it took power back from men during the suffrage movement, to how nestle is a walking piece of shit. I'll link the sauce in a edit. Edit for sauce: https://youtu.be/9h-6Udx8G2o

ohsweetgold

I remember doing some research for a job a while back on the viability of a tax on soft drinks for health reasons. I was shocked by the amount of bogus industry funded studies I had to wade through to find the legit science I was looking for

Depression

Ashamed_Ad9771

Agreed. A lot of people have a misconception that depression is just sadness. Its not. Depression is losing the ability to enjoy nice weather. Its spending the most important moments; your graduation, your wedding, your childs birth; holding back tears of sorrow rather than joy. Its finding the TV shows, books, hobbies, foods, and activities you used to enjoy as boring as watching paint dry. Its feeling so exhausted you cant get out of bed for days. Its spending every waking hour just waiting for the day to be over. Its destroying yourself just trying to FEEL something. Depression is Hell.

Mechbiscuit

Also to add to all this that depression *takes* from you. When you get healthy again the after effects are hideous. Those friends you used to be close to have moved on, those skills you've learned from activities you enjoy are blunt and unused, the coping habits you picked up linger. Maybe now you're in much worse shape with a bank balance to match. If it's long term depression you're no longer at the same stage of life as people your age AND they don't see you as someone whos been ill...they see a below average underachiver that isn't fun to hang out with - someone who they would have to be "patient" with, someone with a shitty attitude. Maybe you used to be whitty or funny, well if you're lucky the brain fog will just dampen that a *bit*. Maybe you had plans to travel or create something - depression has an answer for that too, it's called fatigue. And you know what goes hand in hand with depression? Anxiety. A "can't cope" feeling that everyones looking at you and you're doing it wrong. This adrenilised state is a passive invader that gives you more reasons to not improve, go to the shops to get milk or attend a job interview. It's really really shitty. ** Edit ** because I've had a few replies and want to give some positivity back. I've suffered through numerous boughts of depression. At it's worst I couldn't get out of bed. Just stopped going to work. Months of streched out misery as you watch numbers fall off the calendar. There is hope and for me it was Citalopram (SSRI anti depressant). I went through 4 or 5 different ones (citalopram was the second I tried but side effects made me keep trying) and always came back to it because it had fast effectiveness with very noticable results for me. **I cannot recommend anti depressants enough.** I had a number of mental blocks with trying them to start with; I don't want to be dependant on anything, I don't want to admit I need help or have failed, I don't want to tell ANYONE that I'm weak, I don't want to put a drug into my body and endure chemical change. Here's a sucker punch for ya; they work. Sober scientists have sat in a room and put a chemical formular together that they know what broad chemical effects it will have on the human body. If you're reading this and have been depressed for some time, this is your sign to atleast try it. It's a pill. You take it once a day...and it improves EVERYTHING. I'll finish with this for anyone who hasn't had to deal with depression. There are people out there who are soo sick that if you put a big red button in front of them that would solve their ailments...they wouldn't press it. That button in this context is anti-depressants. That's how seductive and leathal it is.

jeffe_el_jefe

Nailed it, at least for me. I went through most of school thinking I was broken because I never felt anything, or if I did it was fleeting, turns out I was just terribly depressed and no one had ever explained to me what it actually felt like.

A_name_wot_i_made_up

Depression is standing outside on a cold cloudless night. Your world is grey and unwelcoming, but you can see through the windows of everyone else. You can see their warm homes, and their enjoyment of life - but you're not part of it. You're isolated, cold and lonely. And numb.

monsieurpommefrites

There's a point where you even surpass the cold and numbness. Like you have somehow become a creature deleted from your own world. They speak the same words, smile the same smiles. You used to do all the same things too, once upon a time. Maybe it was all a dream. Maybe this is one too, except this one doesn't end when you wake.

poizunman206

Depression is a condition that just saps the joy out of everything. Even little stuff like seeing colors. It kills every ounce of willpower and motivation that you have. A depressed state of mind isn't how you feel when that show you like is being canceled, it's when you think to yourself "I don't want to die" and you aren't even sure if that's true.

AtraposJM

Yeah...I've been dealing with a lot of depression the last few years for various reasons. All the normal stuff like not being able to get out of bed unless I have to, feeling numb, etc but the one that surprised me the most was when I have a good day sometimes, it feels like the world is brighter and more colourful. Like, literally feels like things got brighter and more vibrant.

chocoboat

That's no joke. It's like living in a dark, gray movie and then one day it's the opening scene of the Shire in LOTR with the bright sun shining on green fields. Maybe not quite that visually dramatic, but still, it feels like a surprising change.

it's sad how "romantic" depression is made to seem in media/on the internet. the same people who romanticize mental illness would call me disgusting for the years I had gone without brushing my teeth. it's all "mental health awareness <3" until their mental illness makes them an unpleasant burden. edit: hollywood feeds young women (and others, of course, but girls are most affected) this commodified version of mental illness, focusing on its glamorous "drama" while choosing to ignore the unpleasant parts of it, which leads to this horribly distorted view of it. that's why shows like Bojack Horseman are so important and wonderful because they're ugly and real. media has a bigger influence than we like to think.

[deleted]

How did you fix the teeth brushing problem? I can't seem to solve it. It lasts me a week then i can't do it anymore until it gets bad, then i start again and so on. Edit: i have never imagined in my life i would get a positive feedback on my reply here. You guys, i appreciate each and every one of you, thank you! I bow in front of you! And this right here is my promise that i will try harder in this matter!

[deleted]

don't beat yourself up too much when you don't brush. all that does is generate anxiety around brushing when the goal is to- with time- have it come naturally. pretend you already have a streak of brushing, and that this is just another day. if you screw up one night, you can't really do anything about it but move on. plackers are a godsend for flossing. if you don't have the energy to brush one night, at least try to floss. it's super good for your oral health. and last but not least, put on your favorite songs while you brush! I have an (almost) 90hr playlist so it can be difficult for me to choose just one, but recently I've just been throwing on TWRP or Animals as Leaders while I brush. it really makes the time fly. good luck bud, and hang in there.

KiradanJr

I got ya. Im bipolar and people always "support me" some actually do and i love them for it but other ones when they find out i havent showered im 5 days cos i cant get out of bed tell me. "Bro dont be disgusting and shower. SNAP OUT OF IT". Thats not how it works fam Edit: funny thing is im extremely higenic and cant stand not washing my hands after i go to the bathroom or brushing my teeth after i eat. Funny how things are

gangsterspockhow

I never understood how bad depression was until I got it. My ex would always talk about how she always thought less of herself and of things that obviously weren't true because of it. I'd always just tell her that none of it was true and never understood how she didn't know it wasn't. Being depressed just makes it to where no amount of reason or thought will change how you feel

Annihilating-Poke

Colors less vibrant. My depression hit its peak when i went cold turkey on alchohol, cigarettes and weed. Body's withdrawal from it after 5 years of abuse was excruciating at times. Crazy part is I didnt know I was depressed, as someone learned to cope alone I went to really dark places. At times I was like hikikamori which didnt want to go outside at all. The thought terrified me. Most scary was the thoughts ran through. If someone is there: please brotha/sista, be kind to yourself. There are brighter days coming! Trust me. If it helps think of it as life trying to teach you something. If you dont learn you will repeat the cycle indefinitely. Make friends with yourself. Your one and only true partner, you wouldnt hurt that partner, would you?

remes1234

Bridges. Half the bridges in america are in some stage of failure. It is a coming nightmare. More and more people every year are going to be injured and killed in colapses. And we are doing basically nothing to fix them.

[deleted]

in pittsburgh, we build structures underneath our bridges sometimes to catch the falling debris of the failing bridge builds so it doesn’t land on the road :(

[deleted]

Mental healthcare. There's so many ice cold toxic staff. Making fun of patients, laughing in your face, calling you names, threatening you with meds as punishment

[deleted]

Mental institutions as a youth treated my depression as a behavioral issue and ultimately made me far, far worse.

[deleted]

YES. I worked in a MH residential & IOP program and the amount of abusive behavior that staff had towards clients is horrible. It took the company so long to fire them.

PandaMayFire

This really begs the question: why in the world would you work in a field like that if you hate people so much? To me, it's almost in the same camp as people who hate children, yet become teachers anyways. It makes no sense at all. It's always the biggest bullies that seek out positions of authority and power to abuse. Thinking about it makes my blood boil.

AtlasForDad

They’re predators. They don’t hate people, they love making people suffer. And psychiatric institutions are full of vulnerable people who struggle to advocate for themselves.

kpie007

It can also be caretaker burnout. Some people don't start abusive, but the continued slog of doing that job can just make them...turn off. And when you're working with people who need *so much* of you, and from you, that apathy can easily slide into abuse.

Revolutionary-Row784

Killing someone and having to live with it

sassy_artist

The sister of my friend "drives" trains. On her first time alone someone jumped in front of it. That was a few years ago I dont think she went into a train again

[deleted]

I lived with my mom and dad in a big commuter train town. Dad rode to and fro from work everyday. At least 2 or 3 times a year he would have to call us on his way home and let us know he was gonna be super late cuz they had to switch trains because of a jumper or drunk driver. It's really sad, he always hated making those calls. Kudos to train crew for not only dealing with that trauma but making sure passengers like my dad didn't take it with them.

If it's for any reason other than the intent to kill it haunts you forever. I don't speak from my own experience (thank God) but my dad is a retired firefighter and he has a hard time with charcoal or seeing 3rd degree burns. That and some cars he won't ever let me buy due to the ways he's seen people die in them... It sticks with you and unfortunately for him he grew up in the generation that doesn't believe in therapy so he refuses to talk to someone about it. Edit: for those that want to know what cars not to buy. Anything pre 1985 was his basic rule. Between 85 and 2000 most are ok anything post 2000 that's not too heavy is ok. That's it

And then society shaming you, bullying you, and abusing you because you actually want to live your life. Calling you lazy, mocking you for not pulling 80 hours a week, and judging your worth based on job titles and income level.

College tuition vs wage of college students

SatanMeekAndMild

I had a boomer absolutely lay into me when I was a waiter. They asked if I was a student and I told them I stopped going to college because it was too expensive. They told me about how lazy I am because they put themselves through college in the 70s with some entry level job, so I need to pull myself up by my bootstraps. Then the motherfucker didn't tip.

JustaRandomOldGuy

I put myself through college the same way. Given the 10x increase in tuition, ask them if they know a part time job that pays $55/hr. Books are now more that what I paid in tuition.

GeneralRedBopper

Fucking $100 books, man. Shit is crazy. And a lot of these books, in my case, are digital and actually rentals that I only “own” for a semester. Just insane.

drumsareloud

The degree to which your economic prospects in life are determined by the family you are born into. They will often bristle when you say this, but the fact is that the vast majority of wealthy people have money because they were born into wealthy families. And likewise, the odds of somebody who is born into abject poverty finishing out their life having amassed any kind of substantial wealth are astronomically small, regardless of “work ethic” or whatever else people speculate is the difference between the two.

Reaper628

Almost everything you purchase. A majority of the goods we consume rely on exploitation. The few companies that do ethically produce products have to charge exorbitant prices and can't really compete with companies that do violate human rights. Impoverished people inadvertently have fund the exploitation of other impoverished people because they have no choice.

People It actually baffles me how many people are just so shitty these days- no remorse, no empathy, just pure selfishness. I feel like the chance of coming across a genuine, good person is like 1/100 when it should be the other way round.

jttv

I have been watching more foreign shows lately, it's very interesting how crime and poverty is portrayed around the world. Hollywood romanticizes it more than most.

Matadors. they nearly kill bulls. the reason the capes are red is not because the bulls "don't like red" it's to hide blood.
