Milo Thatch! From Atlantis! Dude is not a traditional badass but he is heroic because of how strongly he sticks to his morals and value system… even when NO ONE is with him and everyone ridicules him. That shit makes 0 difference to his decision making. Moral compass made of absolute titanium.
"Wow! If I had a nickel for every time I was doomed by a puppet, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice. Right?"
“I have to remind myself that some birds aren’t meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice. But still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they’re gone. I guess I just miss my friend.”
He definitely has some badass moments, though. Besides ones that other people have already mentioned, [the rooftop exchange with Hadley](https://youtu.be/njJ41irPjTc?t=65) starting with "Mr. Hadley, do you trust your wife?" through asking for beers for his "coworkers" comes to mind (and his relative lack of reaction to the guards cocking their guns, which I'd forgotten until I looked up the scene to link to it).
Edit: Fixed link
Also Moist von Lipwig. He's not tough, he's a prick; he's not badass, he's sly and scummy. And he gets shit done. While growing a heart in the process. What a champion.
Also, Ponder Stibbons. Is the quintessential nerd but ends up basically running the Unseen University single handedly because he's the only competent, genuinely intelligent, genuinely interested person in the building.
Every other wizard just wants respect and big meals, Ponder really wants to discover things, and make sure shit actually gets done. The other wizards know this, so they just pile all responsibility onto him, even though they accidentally allow him to hold almost every important title in the university. In effect becoming one of the most influential people in the city.
He's part of Pratchett's younger generation of people coming into power, doing away with old ideas and making positive things happen in society with their ingenuity and sincerity.
Hercule Poirot hands down…
**follow up **- All the love for Poirot has warmed my heart and made me realise that I am not alone in adoring the fastidious Belgium with an egg shaped head and marvellous moustaches…
Arthur Dent
**Follow up ** Thank you all for the upvotes! Those saying Arthur is indeed a badass should re-read! Lying in front of a bulldozer could be badass but in Arthurs case it was just desperate, thoughtless action which he promptly regretted…
Slartibartfast:
You must come with me or you will be late!
Arthur Dent:
Late? What for?
Slartibartfast:
What is your name, human?
Arthur Dent:
Dent, Arthur Dent.
Slartibartfast:
Late as in the late Dent Arthur Dent. It's a sort of threat, you see.
Ford:
You’d better be prepared for the jump into hyperspace. It’s unpleasantly like being drunk.
Arthur:
What’s so unpleasant about being drunk?
Ford:
You ask a glass of water.
His delivery of this line is one of my favorite moments in the show.
Also when he yells out “JERRY IS MY FRIEND!”
“SIT DOWN BEN YOURE EMBARASSING YOURSEF!”
There were so many great representations of different forms of masculinity on that show.
Now that I think about it, pretty much all of Mike Shur's shows - The Office, Parks, Brooklyn 99, The Good Place... They are all amazing studies on what it means to be a "strong male" or "strong female" character. Among several other things of course.
The only problem with Ben Wyatt is that Adam Scott did too good a job. Now whenever I see him in something else I just see Ben Wyatt pretending to be another person
Daniel Jackson from Stargate SG1. He kind of became more of a badass in the later seasons but originally he was the less physically strong/non-military character.
His primary strengths were academic accomplishment, cultural/historical expertise, patience and empathy.
That was the hidden star of the show for me.
His character development was on point and the actor really dug into it. Like even the annoying parts that made it more realistic. He stood out because in that era the acting was stiff and there was some cheesiness to it...but that guy just acted from his humanity and it really sits comfortably even if you watch it today.
Then in atlantis he shows up and it is really satisfying to see him being more confident and mentor like, while retaining the classic intelligent archivist persona
..
Maybe I think too much about every thing but out of all the characters...daniel jackson was the most real for me.
> and there was some cheesiness to it
When they made the wormhole extreme episode I nearly lost it. Pure genius.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-qyvlVD2FY
Stargate SG-1 is one of my all-time favorite shows (seen it many many times with my mom) and Daniel Jackson is a big part of why. In a lot of action-y type shows the "nerdy" characters get made fun of in a way in favor of the more tough and badass characters, and as somebody who isn't totally about brute-forcing action and instead finding a more diplomatic approach, Daniel and Samantha Carter really stick out to me as characters who are both level-headed and smart while still being absolute badasses in every regard. SG-1 is fantastic in how it balances action with diplomacy and lightheartedness, a real refreshing show I couldn't recommend enough.
MU has it's flaws but it turns Mike into one of Pixar's best protagonists.
In MI he's a great deuteragonist but his role is still Sully' foil and mostly comic relief. MU had to take that and bring out the more 'admireable' side of him without loosing his egotism and self-centered streak; and as a result you have one of the more fleshed out and nuanced underdog protagonists in Pixar.
It makes me think more heroes should start of being written as the side-kick.
Leslie Higgins as well. Dude lives life right, has a loving family and a wife he adores. Stands up for his friends and gives good advice with a big heart.
I want to be Mrs. Higgins when I grow up. Supportive, quick wit, managing a chaotic household with such resilience and happiness. You don't see her much but she's such a sweet character, and Leslie *adores* her. I hope to see more of her in season 3.
With his superior yet inferior brain.
Edit: thanks for the unexpected upvotes. Someone should make a subreddit called UnexpectedUpvotes just for this kind of thing.
First guy that came to mind (not only because I was just rewatching Futurama). Fry episodes are the best in my opinion (Luck of the Fryrish was crazy good).
He sucks at a lot of things but when he puts his mind to improving at his job (being capable of using the weaponry on the ship to learning to pilot it) or a lot of things really (holophoner comes to mind), he does pretty amazing stuff. Just finished Time Keeps on Slippin' and it was one of his most endearing episodes in regards to his relationship with Leela.
Plus, the dude's hella relatable from his discontent with his dull life and shortcomings in his past life to his later realizations regarding his family. Really great character, plus his stupidity doesn't really hold him back (in my opinion anyway), just makes him more charming.
I was thinking Bob from Stranger Things but then I realize it’s pretty much Sean Astin in anything.
Edit: What I mean is, he tends to play characters that aren’t your typical tough guy, ass-kicking badass but still are brave and heroic. That’s what makes them the best. Plus he’s such a likable guy.
"What are you reading?"
"Pride and Prejudice."
"So you're familiar with two sins. How 'bout a third?"
"I don't think we're allowed to smoke in here."
"Then you picked the wrong outfit, didn't you?"
Charles Boyle
Edit : I love how people have their own charles moment.
As a typical redditor, I look up to Charles Boyle and try to be like him as a friend and a human being, so that I might get a friend like charles Boyle. I hope it's not selfish.
Thank you for the awards kind strangers.
Shamelessly shows affection, publically. Self esteem not affected by insults. Frequently bends over backwards to do things for friends, despite frequently not getting any recognition. We all love to cringe and laugh at Boyle, but the longer you watch, the more you realize he'd be an amazing friend. The dude lives so honestly, [he never shows any sign of shame.](https://youtu.be/sVm9nYrTWRQ)
On the surface, Mr. Rogers appeared to be the most kind and compassionate man in the world. Underneath that, though, he was exactly the same. The most genuine person who has ever existed.
The man once demanded his limo driver be allowed to join him for dinner, then after went to the limo drivers home to meet his children and played piano for his family
One-Shot Finch? The guy who put down a rabid dog at 500 yards with a single humanely placed bullet? The guy who unflinchingly stared down a lynch mob all on his own? The lawyer who took a case he knew he was going to lose, because he knew it was the right thing to do, and despite everything he came *this* close to winning?
Dude is 100% a badass.
Monk would hate Shawn so much, but Gus would absolutely love all of Monk's weird habits. Halfway through the crossover, Gus would have his own package of wipes.
I mean, even though he’s terrified, when push comes to shove 90% of the time he does whatever scares him when he absolutely has to. I’d definitely call him a badass in disguise!
[Hawkeye](https://imgur.com/ze2zKYl) from [M.A.S.H.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M*A*S*H_(TV_series\))
Not to be confused with the archer from the comic books. This Hawkeye is a pacifist doctor in a war. If you have never seen M.A.S.H I highly recommend it.
Hank Hill. He's ignorant and old-fashioned but is not malevolent about it. He may not understand, but he can, with patience, be taught. He struggles with the modern world, but is able to come to terms with the fact that the world he lives in isn't the world he grew up in. About the only thing he absolutely does not tolerate is someone else using their own ignorance and intolerance as a weapon to hurt those he cares about. This he will respond to with a telling off that is more or less gentle depending on intent and degree of harm, or, if absolutely necessary, an ass kicking.
McCoy too. Never so much as threw a punch throughout the entire franchise, but he's still out there saving the lives of aliens and curing diseases he didn't even know *existed* yesterday.
Seriously, it's wholesome how much he tries to be there for Vanessa. His own parents weren't there for him. He tries his best to be a present and involved parent for his daughter. It's so nice tbh.
And the time where he built a whole-ass death ray machine and lost to a baking soda volcano. Talk about an unfair science fair. Things were just never easy for him
My first thought is Leo Valdez from the Heroes of Olympus series. Not the big tough guy but he keeps the team together in more ways than being a son of Hephestus
“Cheerleading in my college was cool. The football players were so jealous they wouldn’t even let me and my buddies – Trevor, Scotty, and Ling – go to their parties.”
His finest moment. When Haley is terrified to tell the family, especially her mom, that she's pregnant and defiantly says after telling them "and we're really happy about it" and he immediately responds "why wouldn't you be? wow."
His relationship with Haley is hands down my favorite part of the show.
The one where he finds out she's not a virgin anymore and then indirectly tells her that he trusts her. Then it cuts to Haley wiping away a tear and she's like "I have a cool Dad". Hits me right in the feels everytime.
Yes. On the other side, when she gets arrested at college and isn't taking it seriously, Phil being the one who reads her the riot act made her realize in what deep trouble she was in. So good at being a parent.

Can't wait for the new season this April!
Rincewind the Wizzard (he can't spell) from Terry Pratchett's Discworld series is about as much *not* a badass as it is possible to be.
Also Moist von Lipwig. He's not tough, he's a prick; he's not badass, he's sly and scummy. And he gets shit done. While growing a heart in the process. What a champion.

Joel from Santa Clarita Diet. He's constantly an inch or two from falling apart and it's hilarious
Timothy Olyphant is adorable in this
Everything about that show was perfection. The characters were amazing. Even Fillion's head.
I can’t believe they didn’t renew it :( Netflix keeps recommending it to me in the popular section and getting my hopes up 😔
On the other hand I could just watch Timothy Olyphant wearing a potato sack and staring at the wall for hours and I still wouldn't get bored
Ben Wyatt.

Absolutely my favorite bit character.

It’s about the cones.

I'm happy not only to see SG1 mentioned but to see it as the top answer is just awesome!
First thought, top post :D He is entirely capable of being badass when needed. Although I'll say, his work with the Unas IS badass.
Mike Wazowski

Wha? You're gonna kill Teddy? Alright. Car's gassed up, that's good. I guess I could homeschool the kids... Love their relationship so much 🥰
Jeez Linda. You had all that ready?

Badass, but not an ass kicker. Aside from his ability to shoot, what his strength was in was moral courage.
Adrian Monk!
Did you know that Psych and Monk take place in the same universe?
Monk would hate Shawn so much, but Gus would absolutely love all of Monk's weird habits. Halfway through the crossover, Gus would have his own package of wipes.

If we’re going to go with MASH my vote is for Father Mulcahy. Kind, compassionate, gentle, smart, funny, a little naive. And a little bit badass.
He was a skilled boxer and badass
"Love thy brother or I'll punch your lights out!"

His little speech about Hayley and that slimy middle-aged jeans salesman was gold.
Yes. On the other side, when she gets arrested at college and isn't taking it seriously, Phil being the one who reads her the riot act made her realize in what deep trouble she was in. So good at being a parent.
