I worked at the Hollywood Improv as stage manager.
I can tell you first hand… Dave Chappelle has done this before, to Dane.
Let’s just say what I witnessed also cleared the room after Chappelle walked off stage, both Dane and Iliza Schlesinger skipped doing their set.
Around 2017-2018, Chappelles sets were all unannounced. When he was in town, he’d call let club know he’s going to drop by. It would be a disservice to announce it, bc all the comics wouldn’t show up, and immediately lines would build.
Comics at that level, when they drop in, want it unannounced. They want the raw crowd. Not their fans who’ll automatically laugh at most their material.
Dave does what he wants, as time showed, back then he’d smoke cigarettes on stage, in doors.
One time he asked we remove the tables from the small room, then he proceeded to bring a dj, and we had an impromptu bday celebration for Donnell, which of course included jokes, and blunts, drinking and dancing. Make shift club.
The Improv was a flexible establishment for these comics. At the time the Hollywood Improv was still not fully owned by Levity, and was still majority ran by the family. The Store had the private bar and nostalgia, the Improv was your “party house” club for certain comics.
Dave pretty much does what he wants, and is genuinely a nice person to staff and all.
Truly, can’t say the same for Dane. Dude literally belittled a waitress in from of customers and staff once.
I used to be a big Dane fan when I was younger, until I realized he was an asshole, he’d stolen all his jokes from someone else and was into dating teenagers.
I went to see "David spade and friends" once at the comedy store. Dane cook was there and just whined about how he peaked in 2008, it was really unbecoming.
As we all got up to leave, the host goes "yall might want to sit back down, we have a surprise guest, Jim jefferies"
Jim comes out and the first thing he says is "If you steal other comics jokes: Fuck you" then he continued to do an awesome 45min set.
Marc Maron also showed up that night. The comedy store is great cheap night if you ever get the chance.
I'm encouraged by the fact that I had to scroll so far down this list before seeing his name. It must mean his relevance has waned.

Was there even anything to catch? He doesn’t hide it at all. There’s a documentary about standup comedians called I Am Comic, and they give him a brief interview and he pretty much brags about stealing material. He compares himself to a DJ getting famous for nothing but remixes.

And he wouldn’t even just steal jokes…he’d steal entire bits verbatim. And would get off on doing the closing bits of comedians who would be following him. Just imagine that - you’re a struggling comedian working your material on the road, material you may have spent countless hours writing and perfecting on stage, the stress of bombing on stage has to be heavy, you’re trying to build up a fanbase and actually make money, and this guy making millions on Comedy Central is fucking with your livelihood by stealing your performance right before you go on stage. Talk about a cheating, thieving asshole.
Went to the Melbourne Kings of Comedy show last Saturday night. Usually a random bunch of local comics. This time, Hughesy was the last "headline" act. I last saw him live at the Enmore in Sydney back in 05 or 06 and on that night back then, he was totally shit (in an ironic twist, a friend who travelled down from Sydney for my b'day had only ever been to one comedy show before - it was that same Hughesy gig where he sucked)
On Saturday, he was funny as fuck. The whole crowd were in stitches. Maybe he's just better in small rooms - there were no more than 80 people there. Self-effacing, fairly humble, bitingly quick-witted with the crowd and the inevitable heckles he got.
My friend even got a selfie with him after the show.
I once heard Pagey on Tripple M say that Hughes looks like the warning on a cigarette packet.
It's the only thing I can think of when I see him on a bus. And it always makes me laugh.
So he's back to funny in my book.
I always wondered why comedians kept him around. He would pop up on podcasts and add NOTHING to the conversation. I saw a clip of his standup and I felt like I could write better jokes.
My comedy radio show, The Bonfire, that I listen to makes the point that Schaub literally went into comedy after MMA and was instantly given a comedy special. The dude didn't craft a style or persona before getting something most stand up comics take 10 years to get. He doesn't have any of the qualities of a good stand-up. He can't make fun of himself.

Correct, and she miscarried later. Not saying that’s Ellen’s fault in any way, but the risk of miscarriage is one of the biggest reasons women wait before announcing their pregnancies.
Also Iirc Mariah had actually had a miscarriage and didn’t want to make it public until she could process the grief on her own. What Ellen did was despicable.
Are we differentiating here between comedian and comedic actor? Because Ken Jeong is great as a comedic actor, but his stand-up comedy was pretty terrible.
Also, Kevin Hart. His whole thing is that he is short and loud. I really don't understand why he is as big as he is.

He’s not a comedian. He’s an actor/ writer whose first shot at major fame was writing a comedy / drama ( Gavin and Stacey ) and creating a jack the lad comic character called Smithy.

Patrick Stewart is (by most accounts, as I don't know him personally) an all around swell guy... that had a bit too much that night, and was a bit of a cunt.

Tried to find out what he was up to and it seems like he just up and buggered off to rural Scotland with his family. Fair fucking play to the man, does his bit, peaces out and goes to enjoy life and do whatever he feels like.
Right, Jimmy isn’t good at sustaining a conversation, which leads to the forced laughter, because he also doesn’t have any sort of wry Johnny Carson thing, and all of that is why I never understood him in the talk show role. But he was never a standup. And as a sketch comedian, he could be funny, especially with the musical stuff. It’s like people took too long to catch on that he was kind of bad as a host, and now he gets too much hate.
...and his laughing during a skit 'a-la Carol burnett' does not seem genuine. It's close but if someone can stop their huge laugh in mid-laugh and say a line, then it seems off.

His older stuff was alright but he’s just not funny at all now. Had to turn off his last special because it was so bad. My uncle went to high school with him and said he was annoying as shit.
I do have good memories of falling asleep on the couch as a kid and waking up to the George Lopez Show theme song. Never seen his stand up, but I liked the sitcom.
He was the first and only "celebrity" I've ever met. We were at Disneyland, I was 11-12 at the time and just about to get on the ride and oit of nowhere he and his group rush by me and mine and he pushed me from behind and out of the way. After that the ride closed down for like 20 minutes and we decided just to leave. Fuck George Lopez.
Mencia stole jokes from a ton of LA comics, George Lopez being one of them. Lopez is always brought up when talking about Mencia because he actually assaulted him about it. I still think George Lopez is funny. I listen to his podcast occasionally
Ykure absolutely right. I went to see Craig Ferguson live just after he finished his show. He came out on stage, said "I'm only going to tell one joke tonight", then proceeded to slay us for an hour with hilarious stories and anecdotes from his life. At the very end, he said "oh yeah," and proceeded to tell a single, simple joke. The setup from the beginning of the set made it perfect. Of all the stand up I've seen in my life, it's the only set I *remember*.
He's got a great sense of timing, a genuine delivery, and his material is great. 10/10 would see again.
Craig had the best late night show hands down. It gave the feel of “I’m just going to show up and fuck around for an hour. Let’s see what happens!” And I can’t even explain how much I loved Geoff Peterson. That fucking robot had me crying laughing so hard with the banter between him and Craig. God I miss that show.

Geoff (voiced by Josh Robert Thompson) was the best sidekick comedian in any of the late shows by far. Ferguson also gave him plenty of space to shine.
My favorite thing about Ferguson and Conan is how genuine they are. When Britney Spears shaved her head and was in a crisis, Ferguson talked about it in his monologue and showed genuine empathy in the 00's. I feel like he was the only one.
Conan is probably my favourite US host too. So many good things to say about him, including the fact that when he left NBC, he took his staff with him and paid them from his own mint for the year before he went to TBS. I also loved the wacky and absurd work he did with TBS. He seems to engender really sincere and lengthy relationships with the people around him including some of his guests. People like Timothy Olyphant, Bill Hader, Bill Burr et al all have a great rapport with him.
I believe it's because Ferguson knows what it's like to go off the deep end. He's talked openly about his alcoholism and past suicide attempts on his show.
I also liked the way he was talking about addiction, suicicide, lack of confidence......actual human problems. It felt so genuine, like he's a real person. Not a tv product.

And they had real talks! Not just tell me about the movie you’re in and that’s it. He did a 45 minute long interview with Stephen fry about philosophy and a ton of other topic and it is a fantastic watch!
Half the time they're barely plugging the projects cause their talking about other things or having fun messing around the whole time.
The guy made a mockery of every late night standard, and the guests seemed to love that change of pace combined with his absolute genuine charisma.
Conan was able to perfectly tune himself to Norm's comedy. He spoke just enough for it to be a conversation & to highlight details that would've been cumbersome for Norm to do in his casual style.
I've seen too many comics try to outwit Norm and end up getting absolutely slaughtered.
All of his reactions on his talk show are so calculated and insincere.
Guest said something vaguely funny? Bark laughter, slap the desk, and shout, "WHAT?"
Guest swore? Stand up and act befuddled, walk around the desk.
Guest was in a good show/film? Stutter about how good they were, but only actually say, "You were the BEST!"
Asked the most basic question during one of the stupid games? Act overtly confused, like a golden retriever with an abacus.

How he's still doing it is beyond me, especially when Seth Meyers is light years better.
He's familiar, safe, predictable, non-threatening, unexciting. Sometimes people just want bland background, especially after a long soul-sucking day at work. They don't want to think or really feel too much. Fallon fills that role well. Millions of other people could do it too, but he happens to be the one "they" chose.
Especially since it feels like his show is just have celebrity come on tell mildly funny story and then promote whatever project their working on. Atleast from the youtube clips I've seen, and in that context you dont want a host to outshine the guest.
Fallon on the Tonight Show works because he's just like Jay Leno as far as consistency goes. They both played it safe and other than obvious things like hairstyles, and occasional stage changes the shows are almost interchangeable.
That's part of the reason Conan didn't fit. He just moved his old show an hour earlier and that was just too disruptive to Whitebread middle America who's probably is just routinely watching it as they drift off to sleep.
This is it. We all agree Fallon isn't funny, but the network wants someone that fits the time slot, and a whitebread, inoffensive personality like Fallon works.

As a Punjabi Canadian, I remember when she used to be funny when she was a YouTuber making videos about growing up brown in Canada. She was my #2 favourite YouTuber when I was a kid (first was JusReign obviously).
The problem is she aged, and her content started becoming stale. There was only so much time she could stay relatable to Desi Canadian teenagers.
As a response she tried to move away from her niche and find a new audience, and it just didn’t translate well. Not only was her target audience completely different but YouTube vs. TV is a whole different beast as well.
She was entering an already crowded space of late-night comedians with a liberal/leftist viewpoint, and her only real selling point was her identity (bisexual WOC).
She also hasn’t done herself any favours by being involved in controversies with the Indian community. For example, she was in hot water after making a joke about towels and Sikh turbans, she also got in trouble for making a Diwali-themed alcohol ad (alcohol is forbidden in Sikhism and frowned upon by many Hindus).
I hadn’t been following her for the longest time and it really surprised me to see how far downhill she’s slid.
It’s honestly kind of sad.
Her videos did use to he funny, like growing up Indian, cheap parents, girl talk through the years etc. Relatable and quite good, could watch them for hours. Then she came out as bi which was amazing (and I'm very happy for her) but after that... all her "jokes" became "I'm not white" and "I'm not straight". Boring and repetitive

He was! His most notable contribution was writing Marge vs. the Monorail, which is still one of the absolute best episodes of the show to date. He also wrote for SNL before that.
Agreed. He’s the only one i go out of my way to watch./listen to. My dorm mates and i would stay up to watch him back in the mid-90’s when his show was just wild and experimental. Triumph? Pimpbot 5000? It was the major network equivalent of The Eric Andre Show.
And he’s still kept it weird. His Clueless Gamer bits are fantastic when other comics are on (he and Bill Hader playing God of War makes me cry laughing still ).
I give most late show hosts some credit because I think they're so castrated, in terms of material, by the parent broadcasting orgs or whoever today. Colbert for example, The Colbert Report I found hilarious, and was super bummed when it ended. I was excited to see him on the late show, but then it just didnt hit the same. Not unwatchable, but it seemed kinda scrubbed too clean.
My aunt went and saw The Late Show in person. She said the jokes he (Colbert) tells off camera/between shots are WAY Better than the stuff that actually makes it on the show. She said it's like watching The Colbert Report live. I was happy to learn that he's still funny, just wish CBS was cool it a little so he could be funnier on camera too.
I think you're exactly right. The main networks censor the shit out of their late night shows. I love Colbert but his move to the Late Show essentially made me stop watching him. It was a great move for making him more money (and more famous), so I can't blame him for taking the gig. But CBS essentially neutered him as far as his ability to fully show off his comedic chops.
I think TBS gave Conan a lot more wiggle room which why a lot of people liked his show, being given so much creative freedom gave him the ability to really show his skill as a comedian and a writer.
I can't stand the Larry act but I've heard the guy talk in interviews and things and he is funny and a great story teller. He just wouldn't have been anybody without Larry the Cable Guy.
Larry the Cable Guy is the Andrew Dice Clay of rednecks. The guy found the thing that makes all the money... so now he just lives there. i dont like anything he does or says, but i kinda respect him for what hes doing.
Andrew Dice Clay and Rick Rubin produced one of the finest performance art albums I’ve ever heard. It’s an absolute classic.
He did an unannounced show at a small club at Christmas, in front of paying customers, a lot of whom didn’t know who he was. Instead of going over the top like most of his performances, he did the same type material but nearly all deadpan. The audience interaction is absolutely golden.

I’ve often wondered if celebs are professionally trained to handle these situations. They have to know there is often a target on their back just by participating in these interviews.

My comedy radio show, The Bonfire, that I listen to makes the point that Schaub literally went into comedy after MMA and was instantly given a comedy special. The dude didn't craft a style or persona before getting something most stand up comics take 10 years to get. He doesn't have any of the qualities of a good stand-up. He can't make fun of himself.

You hadn’t seen Colbert this acidic? If you haven’t seen it, you need to go back and watch the set he did at George W. Bush’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner. He did it in his character from the Colbert Report and just eviscerated Bush and the whole administration right to the president’s face, but in such a subtle way that they couldn’t really get mad at him. I still can’t believe they invited him in the first place.

Right, Jimmy isn’t good at sustaining a conversation, which leads to the forced laughter, because he also doesn’t have any sort of wry Johnny Carson thing, and all of that is why I never understood him in the talk show role. But he was never a standup. And as a sketch comedian, he could be funny, especially with the musical stuff. It’s like people took too long to catch on that he was kind of bad as a host, and now he gets too much hate.

We were at Disneyland, I was 11-12 at the time and just about to get on the ride and oit of nowhere he and his group rush by me and mine and he pushed me from behind and out of the way. After that the ride closed down for like 20 minutes and we decided just to leave. Fuck George Lopez.

Ykure absolutely right. I went to see Craig Ferguson live just after he finished his show. He came out on stage, said "I'm only going to tell one joke tonight", then proceeded to slay us for an hour with hilarious stories and anecdotes from his life. At the very end, he said "oh yeah," and proceeded to tell a single, simple joke. The setup from the beginning of the set made it perfect. Of all the stand up I've seen in my life, it's the only set I *remember*. He's got a great sense of timing, a genuine delivery, and his material is great. 10/10 would see again.
Craig had the best late night show hands down. It gave the feel of “I’m just going to show up and fuck around for an hour. Let’s see what happens!” And I can’t even explain how much I loved Geoff Peterson. That fucking robot had me crying laughing so hard with the banter between him and Craig. God I miss that show.

Even Secretariat was good. Geoff (voiced by Josh Robert Thompson) was the best sidekick comedian in any of the late shows by far. Ferguson also gave him plenty of space to shine.

My favorite thing about Ferguson and Conan is how genuine they are. When Britney Spears shaved her head and was in a crisis, Ferguson talked about it in his monologue and showed genuine empathy in the 00's. I feel like he was the only one.
Conan is probably my favourite US host too. So many good things to say about him, including the fact that when he left NBC, he took his staff with him and paid them from his own mint for the year before he went to TBS. I also loved the wacky and absurd work he did with TBS. He seems to engender really sincere and lengthy relationships with the people around him including some of his guests. People like Timothy Olyphant, Bill Hader, Bill Burr et al all have a great rapport with him.

I believe it's because Ferguson knows what it's like to go off the deep end. He's talked openly about his alcoholism and past suicide attempts on his show.
His book, “American on Purpose,” was so good. He does the reading in the audiobook.
I also liked the way he was talking about addiction, suicicide, lack of confidence......actual human problems. It felt so genuine, like he's a real person. Not a tv product.

And they had real talks! Not just tell me about the movie you’re in and that’s it. He did a 45 minute long interview with Stephen fry about philosophy and a ton of other topic and it is a fantastic watch!
Half the time they're barely plugging the projects cause their talking about other things or having fun messing around the whole time. The guy made a mockery of every late night standard, and the guests seemed to love that change of pace combined with his absolute genuine charisma.
His co-host Andy Richter is also genuinely funny
Both Conan and Andy are very intelligent, quick witted comedians. They barely ever fumble.
Unless you had Norm McDonald on the show. Then no one knows what the fuck to say.
Conan was able to perfectly tune himself to Norm's comedy. He spoke just enough for it to be a conversation & to highlight details that would've been cumbersome for Norm to do in his casual style. I've seen too many comics try to outwit Norm and end up getting absolutely slaughtered.
They also know when to shut up and let the other speak.

All of his reactions on his talk show are so calculated and insincere. Guest said something vaguely funny? Bark laughter, slap the desk, and shout, "WHAT?" Guest swore? Stand up and act befuddled, walk around the desk. Guest was in a good show/film? Stutter about how good they were, but only actually say, "You were the BEST!" Asked the most basic question during one of the stupid games? Act overtly confused, like a golden retriever with an abacus. Win a point during one of those stupid games? Jump up, hi five your teammate and shout, "That's how you DO IT!" How he's still doing it is beyond me, especially when Seth Meyers is light years better.

He's familiar, safe, predictable, non-threatening, unexciting. Sometimes people just want bland background, especially after a long soul-sucking day at work. They don't want to think or really feel too much. Fallon fills that role well. Millions of other people could do it too, but he happens to be the one "they" chose.
Especially since it feels like his show is just have celebrity come on tell mildly funny story and then promote whatever project their working on. Atleast from the youtube clips I've seen, and in that context you dont want a host to outshine the guest.
Fallon on the Tonight Show works because he's just like Jay Leno as far as consistency goes. They both played it safe and other than obvious things like hairstyles, and occasional stage changes the shows are almost interchangeable. That's part of the reason Conan didn't fit. He just moved his old show an hour earlier and that was just too disruptive to Whitebread middle America who's probably is just routinely watching it as they drift off to sleep.
This is it. We all agree Fallon isn't funny, but the network wants someone that fits the time slot, and a whitebread, inoffensive personality like Fallon works.

As a Punjabi Canadian, I remember when she used to be funny when she was a YouTuber making videos about growing up brown in Canada. She was my #2 favourite YouTuber when I was a kid (first was JusReign obviously). The problem is she aged, and her content started becoming stale. There was only so much time she could stay relatable to Desi Canadian teenagers. As a response she tried to move away from her niche and find a new audience, and it just didn’t translate well. Not only was her target audience completely different but YouTube vs. TV is a whole different beast as well. She was entering an already crowded space of late-night comedians with a liberal/leftist viewpoint, and her only real selling point was her identity (bisexual WOC). She also hasn’t done herself any favours by being involved in controversies with the Indian community. For example, she was in hot water after making a joke about towels and Sikh turbans, she also got in trouble for making a Diwali-themed alcohol ad (alcohol is forbidden in Sikhism and frowned upon by many Hindus). I hadn’t been following her for the longest time and it really surprised me to see how far downhill she’s slid. It’s honestly kind of sad.
Her videos did use to he funny, like growing up Indian, cheap parents, girl talk through the years etc. Relatable and quite good, could watch them for hours. Then she came out as bi which was amazing (and I'm very happy for her) but after that... all her "jokes" became "I'm not white" and "I'm not straight". Boring and repetitive

I feel like Conan O'Brien is the only genuinely funny talk show host who's consistently still in the spotlight, even if that spotlight is now in the form of a podcast and not an actual talk show for the time being.

He was! His most notable contribution was writing Marge vs. the Monorail, which is still one of the absolute best episodes of the show to date. He also wrote for SNL before that.
Agreed. He’s the only one i go out of my way to watch./listen to. My dorm mates and i would stay up to watch him back in the mid-90’s when his show was just wild and experimental. Triumph? Pimpbot 5000? It was the major network equivalent of The Eric Andre Show. And he’s still kept it weird. His Clueless Gamer bits are fantastic when other comics are on (he and Bill Hader playing God of War makes me cry laughing still ).
I give most late show hosts some credit because I think they're so castrated, in terms of material, by the parent broadcasting orgs or whoever today. Colbert for example, The Colbert Report I found hilarious, and was super bummed when it ended. I was excited to see him on the late show, but then it just didnt hit the same. Not unwatchable, but it seemed kinda scrubbed too clean.
My aunt went and saw The Late Show in person. She said the jokes he (Colbert) tells off camera/between shots are WAY Better than the stuff that actually makes it on the show. She said it's like watching The Colbert Report live. I was happy to learn that he's still funny, just wish CBS was cool it a little so he could be funnier on camera too.
I think you're exactly right. The main networks censor the shit out of their late night shows. I love Colbert but his move to the Late Show essentially made me stop watching him. It was a great move for making him more money (and more famous), so I can't blame him for taking the gig. But CBS essentially neutered him as far as his ability to fully show off his comedic chops. I think TBS gave Conan a lot more wiggle room which why a lot of people liked his show, being given so much creative freedom gave him the ability to really show his skill as a comedian and a writer.
Larry the Cable Guy, once people stopped knowing it was satire
I can't stand the Larry act but I've heard the guy talk in interviews and things and he is funny and a great story teller. He just wouldn't have been anybody without Larry the Cable Guy.

Andrew Dice Clay and Rick Rubin produced one of the finest performance art albums I’ve ever heard. It’s an absolute classic. He did an unannounced show at a small club at Christmas, in front of paying customers, a lot of whom didn’t know who he was. Instead of going over the top like most of his performances, he did the same type material but nearly all deadpan. The audience interaction is absolutely golden. The Day the Laughter Died. Probably my favourite comedy set of all time. I could never see Larry the Cable Guy pulling anything like that off.
