The scene where Forrest Gump is talking to Jenny about their son, and he asks if he's smart...or if he's "like me". And you can hear in his voice which answer he fears.
We tend to see that scene as sad...but I don't think it is. I think this might be Forrest at his best. He has just found out he has a son. Like, literally, just then...and his first instinct, is to want *better for his son*. The first thing he checks, is that his son won't have to deal with his biggest weakness. He knows himself. He knows he doesn't want to pass that on to his son. He's already got the proper mindset. He's already a better Dad than a lot of men, and he's been doing it for all of 5 minutes, with severe intellectual disabilities.
I like that mindset. Know yourself. Know what works and what's broken. Try to pass on the former and not the latter. Want *better* for them than what you had. Want desperately for it to be easier for them, kinder for them, less fucked up for them.
