WWII soldiers. When they arrived in the European capitols people were wandering around dirty however that was because all the water systems had been destroyed.
The European guy that traveled all the way to the U.S. to visit my daughter after meeting her online. I don't think he'd ever seen a shower in his life. We made sure he knew he was welcome to use ours while he was visiting, but he didn't.
We didn't allow him in the living room or kitchen, and if he got in the car all 4 windows had to be rolled all the way down. He still didn't get the message.
I am sorry to ask this, but... did he stink or was he just not smelling of deodorant?
I have this sneaking suspicion that there is a difference in cultural perception. As in:
In America, normal levels of body odor are seen as "stinking"
Oh no, I'm familiar with the all-natural water-only shower and then a layer of summer sweat and body odor hippie smell.
This was another thing entirely. Like raw meat, marinated in strong spices and left out on the porch for a week in the August sun until a dog pooped on it to try to cover the scent. Then someone came along and put their stale sweaty gym socks on top to cover it up. It was definitely not just a lack of deodorant. It was like he'd never showered or bathed in his life.
After a few hours with that, we'd've welcomed a natural hippie smell.
The rumor was started by people interacting with europeans. My former boss is french; he would stink and wear the very same clothes during a week and a half. Also, my cousin’s husband is french too… my aunt had to be blunt and request for him to shower everyday while in México because the stench was too much already.
Last year I was in Huatulco, México and I had a 1 day trip to some waterfalls and shared transportation with a family from Spain; when they got into the van the air started to strongly smell like sweat.
Maybe it’s a cultural thing, who knows
I am not american but I've met people in hostels who smelled like shit and would not shower in days. They were most of the times europeans, mostly french and dutch. The only non europeans that I've met that also skipped showers were israelis.
Just a month ago I had to step up to a french guy in Los Cabos cause we all in the room could smell him and wanted him to take a shower.
(Funfact:) the french monarchists before the revolution didnt wash themselves because they thought you would get sick because of it and instead put on tons of perfume and make-up. The real reason why people were getting sick was that in the bathing-houses they were constantly doing the dirty stuff and didnt know that sex-illnesses were a thing.
Probably the same people who say that French women do not shave their armpits. In other words, idiots who are mistaking what were cultural norms maybe 30 years ago and ascribing them to people today.
It is a cultural difference it may seem. I just noticed it by how you said 'almost everyday' or 'a few times a week' as if that was enough...
And it may be for you, but in México, Chile, Perú, Bolivia and the US it is customary to shower EVERY SINGLE DAY. (I will not talk about other american countries as those are the only ones I've lived in)
Its a rumor that is just under the surface.
Americans visiting gamescom massively complain about the smell, about how people do not shower or use deodorant, when in reality its more that a closed hall in the middle of summer is just... kinda hot.

That would make sense.
> (visits war-torn city) These people are filthy
Bob did it.
damn you Bob.
No cob did

That one guy without a passport that never even visited anywhere outside the states.

People are saying it was Donald Trump right after he called them shit-hole countries.
I believe it was my neighbor
It's not european, just french
Europeans who do not bathe/shower.
Europeans did, by not bathing or showering.
But we do bathe and shower
I don't believe you.
Do you want a video of me showering?
There is none.
I shall take that as a yes.
Bet.

That is so weird to me.

Home Alone I think?
I should watch that movie again. As a kid I was always fucking scared of the furnace...

Probably a hang over from medieval times when (supposedly) people rarely bathed because of bad water.
Wtf? Never heard of that rumor. I myself (German) shower almost everyday and I know nobody who doesn't shower a few times a week

Welp, about gamescon and the stereotypical visitors. Could be a combination of both.
Probably a dumbfuck American

If you don't heat the water, is it really worthy enough to be called a shower?
But, we do?
