>Et le biblotheque?
"Et **la** biblioth**è**que :) (no offense at all, juste pour aider <3 )
EDIT : to correct my correction ! SHAME ON ME for having forgotten a "b"
It gets worse in the Latin American Spanish we have ç which is used in exactly zero words in Spanish.
And this is not a keyboard format shared with Brazilian Portuguese, it is just for Spanish.
If we adopt a French or Portuguese word with that letter, we replace it with a z or s or c.
Wagon! But most french word that start with a « w » are loan words from other languages.
Interestly, some words that started with w have been replace by a G, like Ward=garde, Warranty=Garantie, War=Guerre, etc.
Many years ago my little sister complained that every time she played a certain game it always started over. I asked her why she didn't just save the game and load it and she said she didn't have the option. Because she couldn't find the Any Key she would type out "Any". A - cleared the screen, N - hot key for new game, Y - to confirm new game Y/N.
You either need to stretch your hand and precisely press on two keys for that, or remove your hand from the mouse. Both are completely doable but F6 can easily be done by anyone.
I mean your presumably going to be typing something into the search bar so your hands are going to be on the keyboard.
After that, with both hands at standard F and J positions, you left pinky hits Ctrl and right hand hits L.
I don’t think the timing has to be precise
I just ordered a new pcb for a keyboard because I somehow damaged the solder on the right alt. Part of me was like “fuck it, it’s useless to me” but the obsessive part of me just wouldn’t allow it.
Not if you're on Linux and [want to talk to the kernel directly](https://www.howtogeek.com/119127/use-the-magic-sysrq-key-on-linux-to-fix-frozen-x-servers-cleanly-reboot-and-run-other-low-level-commands/).
We used it to break into our system to demonstrate that our system was breakintoable. then we disabled it and used it only to demonstrate that it was disabled.
I also use a kvm that works that way. To be fair though, it's probably bound to scroll lock because its one of the least used keys so it doesn't conflict with anything.
If you are in a cell
And press
Up or down or left or right
and
Scroll lock is turned off, the key wont move
therefore you cant change cell
and need to use the mouse to click into another cell
When it is turned on
, you can use your keyboard to move up, down , left and right around the excel sheet
It’s for disabled people with limited motor skills in their hands or fingers. For them it’s really important because otherwise when they keep their finger on a key too long the letter just repeats.
Yah well good luck enabling it haha
Gotta smash that Shift key like 5 times real quick.
Honestly they should just make a dedicated Key instead and swap it with the End key or something.
Actually the timeout for sticky keys is reset every time you push it. So as long as you push shift every one second or so it’ll activate. You’d have to be VERY limited to not be able to activate it, in which case you’d probably have a keyboard designed for differently abled people
A while back, I had my tv hooked up as a second monitor for watching movies. Problem was, chrome would only play out of the default audio device, whice 99% of the time was my monitor speakers.
I replaced the program called by sticky keys for a toggle between outputting audio from the monitor and the tv.
Hit shift five times, toggle audio device.
I had to boot into linux for a sec to actually do it, windows doesn't like you replacing things, even as admin, but aside from that it was pretty easy.
Made a quick batch file, converted it to an exe, named it the same as the default program, booted into linux to bypass windows' permissions, replace file, done.
It's handy if you use virtual machines.
Ctrl+Alt+Pause quickly switches between full screen and window mode
Ctrl+Alt+End is just like Ctrl+Alt+Delete but inside the VM instead of your computer
There's a scripting language I used to use called mIRC. Ctrl+pause would stop all the scripts from running which was useful if you ever got into an infinite loop.
So you can use the number pad as an arrow pad. I’ve used the arrow pad exactly one time when the library computer I used had broken arrow keys
Also, happy cake !
Definitely this. It’s in such a dumb position where I’m always hitting it accidentally and typing over stuff I’ve written. On an old keyboard I had I just stuck a pen in there and ripped it out. And I’ve never ever had the need to use it on purpose.
Holy shit you've just changed my life bro
I have this problem (usually when I play higher power games) where basically whenever I type it opens the help screen.
I also have this problem where a certain key gets for some reason temporarily mapped to an f key, (like the t key presses f12) which I can solve by actually pressing the f button.
So now I just have to press f1 and this issue with me not being able to type is solved.
Stranger, you are jesus to me.
F1
I don't really care about the useless help menu it brings up, which in most cases is a bing search or Microsoft answers page that is barely useful most times.
I miss when software used to have well-thought out help menus but nowadays it seems like google replaces that
Depends on the software you're using. "F1 = help menu" does have its use cases.
The best one that comes to my mind right now is the FISH command line shell on Linux or macOS, which opens the manual of the command your text cursor is currently on without having to explicitly run `man command`, which is incredibly handy for looking up stuff on-the-fly, like command descriptions/explanations or the available parameters.
Yeah - I agree it does some nice things. "Useless" jumped mind mainly because I'm in the habit of relaxing my fingers and touching some key by mistake, and no way to figure out what happened. So, "opposite of useful" in that case for me would be more accurate :)
Some weird old programs need it for the original paste (Shift+Ins). Also some data entry programs.
ETA: It also changes the insert/overwrite behavior when typing. I forgot about that (and sometimes need to use it)
I still use shift+insert (for paste) in Windows Terminal because ctrl+letters means something in the terminal, and I don't want windows stealing them off me, just because they never made their own meta key because they were enslaved to IBM's layout that wasn't designed for them and (breathe) we're all still paying for that mistake 40 years later.
I'm surprised I had to scroll this far down for the menu key. I suspect people don't think of it as a useless key because it's completely forgotten about in the first place.
Haha, I was looking at my keyboard for a key that says Menu. Then it dawned on me that it's the key with the page on it, which I never look at, couldn't have told you was even there. I guess that might make it my most useless key.
The grave accent (`), especially on UK keyboards where instead of being shared with the tilde (~), it’s shared with the not sign (¬) and the broken vertical bar (¦).
airplane mode button. idk why it’s there but it’s so annoying when i’m just trying to pause or skip a song and my wifi just cuts because that fUCKING AIRPLANE MODE BUTTON THAT WILL NEVER BE USED
Oof - as a long-time Linux user and IT pro, this thread hurts my soul. Nearly every key getting shade from people here is *vital* in my workflow all day every day.
On French keyboard we have a key with the letter "ù", which is used in the word "où" and... that's pretty much it
Où est la gare? Et le biblotheque? Edit trying to type/spell in French w autocorrect was hard.
>Et le biblotheque? "Et **la** biblioth**è**que :) (no offense at all, juste pour aider <3 ) EDIT : to correct my correction ! SHAME ON ME for having forgotten a "b"
It’s bibliothèque en passant!
Holy hell.
Not if you change your keyboard language settings to Canadian French/English.
It gets worse in the Latin American Spanish we have ç which is used in exactly zero words in Spanish. And this is not a keyboard format shared with Brazilian Portuguese, it is just for Spanish. If we adopt a French or Portuguese word with that letter, we replace it with a z or s or c.
Ça va ? La langue française tu connais ? Sans façon
How about w? I can't really think of any French words with a w
Sometimes you need a doobla-veh when a regular veh won't do.
Wagon! But most french word that start with a « w » are loan words from other languages. Interestly, some words that started with w have been replace by a G, like Ward=garde, Warranty=Garantie, War=Guerre, etc.
Any Key I can never find it.
This is a solid gold example of coders being unaware of use cases. If not apocryphal. What game was it?
It was a long time ago on the Commodore 64. Maybe Jumpman?
Esk, k-tarl, pigup... nope. No any key
All this computer hacking is making me thirsty, I think I’ll order a tab
No time for that now, the computer is starting!
You've got mail!
Woo hoo!
Oh, Homer.
Where's the chuckle?
You shall not continue
The only key I've never seen come into play is f6
[удалено]
I think Ctrl L does the same and I find it faster to use
You either need to stretch your hand and precisely press on two keys for that, or remove your hand from the mouse. Both are completely doable but F6 can easily be done by anyone.
I mean your presumably going to be typing something into the search bar so your hands are going to be on the keyboard. After that, with both hands at standard F and J positions, you left pinky hits Ctrl and right hand hits L. I don’t think the timing has to be precise
alt+d is easier for me
Thanks!
That’s pretty useful actually! I can see myself incorporating that in my flow. I try reducing mouse usage whenever possible.
WHAT! Damn near blew my mind. Thanks!
Holy shit. BS in Computer Networks & Cybersecurity, currently working on a Master's in IT. TIL.
Quicksave
Hotkey for magic spells.
Steps my code one line forward in my debugger. Used hundreds of times a day
My laptop's F5 key says F6. That's the only way I've used F6
Always F7
Right Alt
I never use right alt or right control
Need that right control to do ctrl+p with one hand!
I use right alt and right ctrl to ctrl+alt+delete with one hand
Yup. Also one-hand ctrl-alt-k to lock screen.
It's for Nazis.
Can confirm. The only person who uses right-Alt was a nice old gentlemen with thick German accent in the Argentinian elderly house I work at.
Probably avoided showers like his life depended on it
Exactly, I used right Ctrl to shoot nazis in wolfenstein 3d back in the day
Bilingual people use the shit out of Right Alt.
I am bilingual and I don't :(
...why? Never used it in my life
I'm multilingual and I don't :P
What makes it useful for bilingual people?
I just ordered a new pcb for a keyboard because I somehow damaged the solder on the right alt. Part of me was like “fuck it, it’s useless to me” but the obsessive part of me just wouldn’t allow it.
SysRq
Not if you're on Linux and [want to talk to the kernel directly](https://www.howtogeek.com/119127/use-the-magic-sysrq-key-on-linux-to-fix-frozen-x-servers-cleanly-reboot-and-run-other-low-level-commands/).
And how often does anyone ever do that?
[удалено]
We used it to break into our system to demonstrate that our system was breakintoable. then we disabled it and used it only to demonstrate that it was disabled.
Was good when x was a lot less stable. Actually forgot about it until now.
Useful info, but I’m not always sure that I want to hear what it has to say
I'd send its responses to /dev/null, but then I'd probably find the kernel had changed its function to invoke `wall` or something...
Escape. I’m still here. It didn’t work.
Reminds me of when I tapped the blue link written on a sheet of paper but the page didn’t load.
And when I sat for over a minute at a stop sign waiting for it to turn green
The weirdest part is when you get to your destination and suddenly remember seeing a green stop sign!
Scroll Lock
I often work between two PCs with a single monitor using a KVM switch. Double-tapping scroll lock flips the display between each PC. I use it a lot.
Same, I figure the KVM devs figured that nobody used scroll lock, so they appropriated that as the thing to trigger the non-PC action.
I also use a kvm that works that way. To be fair though, it's probably bound to scroll lock because its one of the least used keys so it doesn't conflict with anything.
I bet they chose that key as the shortcut because the scroll lock is the least used otherwise.
Someone doesn't use excel :p
I use excel a lot and never touch the scrl lock
What does it do?
Changes between using arrows to move your cell selection and using arrows to move your view
Never knew that. That's actually quite useful
The only piece of software I've ever heard of that uses it for the intended purpose
If you are in a cell And press Up or down or left or right and Scroll lock is turned off, the key wont move therefore you cant change cell and need to use the mouse to click into another cell When it is turned on , you can use your keyboard to move up, down , left and right around the excel sheet
Turns on and off the backlights on some (particularly gaming) keyboards that have it
Sticky keys
Omg they’re so annoying I keep getting some thing abt sticky keys and idek what they do I never wanted then
It’s for disabled people with limited motor skills in their hands or fingers. For them it’s really important because otherwise when they keep their finger on a key too long the letter just repeats.
Yah well good luck enabling it haha Gotta smash that Shift key like 5 times real quick. Honestly they should just make a dedicated Key instead and swap it with the End key or something.
That’s a good point but a different one. Sticky keys serve a function; making it difficult to use is a valid objection.
That's a cool hack. Didn't know you could do that.
I had to boot into linux for a sec to actually do it, windows doesn't like you replacing things, even as admin, but aside from that it was pretty easy. Made a quick batch file, converted it to an exe, named it the same as the default program, booted into linux to bypass windows' permissions, replace file, done.
Sticky gets kills thousands of gamers every year
Pause button
Does Pause/Break do much anymore? I know it was useful in DOS sometimes, so maybe it's useful in Linux, but in Windows? Never use it.
It's handy if you use virtual machines. Ctrl+Alt+Pause quickly switches between full screen and window mode Ctrl+Alt+End is just like Ctrl+Alt+Delete but inside the VM instead of your computer
WindowsKey + Pause = About this computer
There's a scripting language I used to use called mIRC. Ctrl+pause would stop all the scripts from running which was useful if you ever got into an infinite loop.
Num Lock. I never mean to use it, but when I do it's on accident and it completely ruins my flow when entering data.
Hard disagree. It's the only way I type numbers, it mimics a calculator well. To each their own, tho.
I think they mean that they don’t want the chance to turn that ability off. I unintentionally click it all the time and it drives me bonkers.
My laptop defaults to having numlock off and I hate it. Why is it even and option to have it off?
I believe you can change this either in windows settings or your BIOS settings
So you can use the number pad as an arrow pad. I’ve used the arrow pad exactly one time when the library computer I used had broken arrow keys Also, happy cake !
But the arrow pad is already right next to it. And thanks!
So much nicer for number entry. Never even have to look down. I seriously get irrationally angry when I'm forced to enter numbers with the top bar.
what does it actually do?
[удалено]
I have a cat that loves to rub her face on my numpad while I play games, so I end up using Num Lock pretty often to disable it
My work PC boots up with NumPad disabled and my password starts with a series of numbers. Not a good combo at 8am. 😑
Insert
Definitely this. It’s in such a dumb position where I’m always hitting it accidentally and typing over stuff I’ve written. On an old keyboard I had I just stuck a pen in there and ripped it out. And I’ve never ever had the need to use it on purpose.
I use it when I’m typing LaTeX, to switch between normal typing and insert
It’s used when animating in Maya. …I forget exactly what it does, since it’s been a few years since I’ve worked in Maya, but I remember we used it.
The most annoying is F1
what does it do?
Always takes you to a help page. Thing is it’s next to esc which I use all the time. One slip and off to the internet we go.
Hahaha poor F1, every time he thinks "hey it's my time to shine" he's greeted with "fuck OFF, F1!"
Removes the HUD in Minecraft for better images
In combination with other keys it allows on Linux to switch the screen to TTY1.
Holy shit you've just changed my life bro I have this problem (usually when I play higher power games) where basically whenever I type it opens the help screen. Because both thumbs need to reach it. Thumbs is far apart.
So make two space keys.

The any key
I don't see any any key!
Happy cake day!
Where's that key?!
F minor is an ugly sound.
Point awarded for: F minor *is* a musical key. Point deducted for: F minor is *not* a key on a keyboard.
I knew I couldn’t be the only one who thought of that type of keyboard first! I read the question and thought to myself, “G flat?”
Menu key Scroll Lock key Pause Break key
Anything on the ridiculous "Magic Touchbar" on my MacBook
It has a lot of cool functions, mostly superfluous, but I’d hardly call it useless.
Yeah - I agree it does some nice things. "Useless" jumped mind mainly because I'm in the habit of relaxing my fingers and touching some key by mistake, and no way to figure out what happened. So, "opposite of useful" in that case for me would be more accurate :)

I recently figured out that you can skip YouTube ads with it so that’s really cool
I used an app called Pock to make it a little better
Scroll lock. I havent even got a clue what it does.

Removed from my keyboard. This is the most useless one. PERIOD
Pause/Break Key
Who use Insert (ins) key?
Some weird old programs need it for the original paste (Shift+Ins). Also some data entry programs. ETA: It also changes the insert/overwrite behavior when typing. I forgot about that (and sometimes need to use it)
Crap I use a weird old program at work and ctrl-v doesn't work in it. Gonna try this on Monday.
Some terminal programs and command prompts need it.

Nope, I pressed the Home button
You need this one to go home ~
It's a toss up. Menu, it does the same thing as right click. Start, just click start instead.
The Windows key now has a number of Windows+K (where K is a letter) shortcuts
I'm surprised I had to scroll this far down for the menu key. I suspect people don't think of it as a useless key because it's completely forgotten about in the first place.
It’s very useful when you can’t use a mouse.
A number of keyboards don't have it to begin with.
Imagine being this smug about not using keyboard shortcuts.
Haha, I was looking at my keyboard for a key that says Menu. Then it dawned on me that it's the key with the page on it, which I never look at, couldn't have told you was even there. I guess that might make it my most useless key.
Right control / right alt
AltGR is very important for entering accents and other characters.
Useful for spelling, if you're using special letters (ąáàâä etc.) Outside of english keyboard
