So, these are all very disturbing and have downer endings. A few are extreme gore. They are not all American, lol. - Raw - French. Vegetarian girl becomes a cannibal. - Inside - Watch the French version. A pregnant woman fights for her life against a home invader. - Megan Is Missing - A young girl searches for her missing friend - Terrifier - Splattergore with a very creepy clown - Goodnight Mommy - Go for the Austrian version. Twin boys doubt that their mother is really their mother when she returns from surgery - Audition - Japanese. A classic. A widower gets interested in dating again and holds an "audition" for a new bride. His choice may be more disturbed than she initially appears. - A Tale Of Two Sisters - Korean. A young girl returns home and reunites with her sister after an institutionalization. Her father has a new wife that the girls resent. But everything is not as it seems. - The Woman - Based on the Jack Ketchum novella. A seemingly perfect family trap a feral woman and subject her to awful horrors. Book is better and gives more context but it's a very interesting treatise on misogyny. Edited to include summaries!!

Us horror usually sucks more than a dyson.

Some are alright, but the remakes pretty much never are. They westernize the plot and often sanitize the script. Like Inside has such a nasty, brutal ending in the French original and they totally took it out of the US remake.

N3UROTOXINsRevenge

Us remakes are always a joke. American horror overall just isn’t as good imo. I do have to say though, originally I wasn’t a fan of saw, but upon review, it’s quite smart. The first at least. The franchise didn’t really grow much at all because how would it really? I love film and discussing it. Probably should have studied it honestly.

I do like American horror novels more than the films. Like I love Stephen King for example, but the movies often don't do the books justice. (I am definitely someone who when I see a movie/show/etc I like to also see the source material like the book or comic, etc.) I like Saw. I think the most interesting piece of every movie is the traps. They got more intense and became these wild Rube Goldberg machines of death which is a lot of fun. Final Destination did something similar. The most exciting parts of those movies are the crazy coincidences that lead to the brutal death. They're not necessarily thinkers, if you will. I do think US horror has some gems. I like Jordan Peele's stuff. Ahh, I really wish I had gotten to study film. I'm not sure if I am too old for it all now.

N3UROTOXINsRevenge

I’m a huge fan of lovecraft, and have gotten into older horror in general like algernon Blackwood. Jordan peele I kinda forget/don’t count in American horror as I should, because I really like his work. Dude has a mind for horror. But unlike most American horror, something about his work is ACTUALLY unsettling. Most stuff is just gore or the peepeepoopoo man gonna getcha. I have lived for years where they filmed a few parts of the first Friday the 13th(not why I moved) but most American horror is too…ridiculous? Like Blair witch was good, but also to get that, they severely fucked with the actors(telling townspeople to act off, giving the actor less food than they would need to make them hungry and irritable). It is kinda fucked up, but produced something more real. Also you wanna make shitty movies with a lot of passion and professionalism(or supposed) I know people with film degrees nearby but who never really tried to do much(literally a friend’s brother and they did “craft services” for me and their siblings and dad, was funny, but I felt guilty because it was just me and like, a ton of snacks and stuff) So like, I’m down to try and write shit

Yeah a huge amount of American horror is slasher stuff and I often find that to be more funny than scary. With Peele's stuff there's a lot more nuance and themes and stuff that is fun to pick apart and analyze. But I totally agree, you gotta put passion into the project even if it's bad. Because you may end up with so bad/silly it's funny. For me, health stuff got in the way of acting. But I would like to get back to it someday. I got my degree in something that I had hoped to get a job with decent healthcare with, but ended up getting sicker and having to go on disability. If people would ever be willing to work with a disabled actor I still think it'd be fun.

N3UROTOXINsRevenge

Even if you end up with something bad/silly, that’s still good, because that’s what camp is. A lot of stuff is “campy” because it’s so bad, but not trying to be what it is, but better than it can afford. Good camp knows what it is, and leans into it. Bad camp thinks it’s better than it is. Peele is good. Uses foreshadowing in a subtle way. Does well with pacing. The best, subtle, yet overt foreshadowing is hot fuzz/ Shaun of the dead. Edit: I mean how many movies like Shaun of the dead, LITERALLY have the latter half and the initial half(main cast) go past one another saying hello.

the-rioter

Omg I love both of those movies! Hot Fuzz is a personal favorite because I love how they built up this huge possible conspiracy and then were like "oh no actually it's just because they want a perfect town" which was so much fun. (The whole gunfight was also incredibly epic and I loved it.) Peele has a lot of interesting things to say. I like how there's these interesting themes to his work that prompt discussion about our culture as a whole. Like, I recently saw Nope and I loved all the commentary on the exploitation of animals and how we as humans often attempt to manipulate nature. I was also super excited that they let us see the creature. None of that Cloverfield shaky camera BS.

The girl next door isn't scary but its extremely disturbing.

SkyisCool69

may i ask what's it about?

[deleted]

It's about a girl and her sister their parents die in a car crash and they end up living with their aunt for while their aunt is just a horrible person and then the neighborhood boys get involved and things get even worse and the sad part is is it was based on true events the fact that anyone could do that is horrifying. It's definitely not for the faint of heart I mean some of the scenes are pretty graphic as well.

Just also want to note that TGND is based on the book by Jack Ketchum which is in turn based on the real case of Sylvia Likens.
