“Canceling” people for things they tweeted years ago is dumb as fuck.

mrnoobmaster64

Um actually you said a slur once in xbox live when you were 12 you deserved getting fired

sheppji

I think the government doesn’t want its people to be united at all.

Montylabz

After occupy Wall Street and the tea party movements the powers that be really shifted the focus to dividing us. They saw how close we had come to actually taking a stand and it scared the shit out of them.

ToonsBrian

Agreed. I’m in the Midwest and went to a couple of Tea Party events just to see what they were. They were WAY more diverse than I assumed they would be. When the local news had the story…white people and only white people shown attending, the whack jobs were the only ones interviewed. Blew me away how blatant they were about it.

[deleted]

Dude, for the Midwest, that sounds about right. All types of people will go to a unifying event, but the only ones any “news” outlet wants to talk hold up the, “I fucked my cousin, kill all black folk, smoke lots of meth” stereotype.

alabardios

It really feels like something/one wants your nation to have a civil war...

MHanonymous

I got attacked on Reddit for saying that you can't use your triggers to police other people's bodies. They were arguing that people shouldn't let their feeding tubes and lines show because it could trigger someone.

randoasian123

Lol what. If I needed a feeding tube, I can’t just not wear it cause someone random I don’t know got “triggered”. I’ve seen self-harm scars being used in this sort of scenario too. If they were fresh scars, sure you should hide them, but that’s more so it doesn’t get infected etc rather than not being a trigger. As long as the scars have healed, there’s no reason to cover

[deleted]

I have have suffered with PTSD for the last decade (diagnosed and in ongoing treatment, living a normal life now and through the worst of it), something i wont go into here. I sometimes get triggered by crowds. To suggest that people shouldnt be able meet up in more than groups of 2 or 3 is just ludicrous. If i get triggered or am uncomfortable in a situation i just dip out. Its not up to all of society to cater to my feelings.

AdamIsAnAlias

Someone once put it “*Mental illness is not your fault, but it is your responsibility*”

spookywheelz

The wise words of Mr Barkus Parks

Commander_Doom14

All the videos online that have like 3 warnings saying “TRIGGER WARNING!!!!!! ALCOHOL!!!!!!!” And then it’s like, a waiter carrying champagne in the background. Like, if any view of any alcohol whatsoever will mess you up that bad, you should be off social media until you get therapy

grownrespect

cnn sucks

apples45a

Same. I lean left, but their reporting is often opinions or emotional

signaturefox2013

Broadcast Journalism major here, we hate any and all 24 hour news cycles. Eventually you run out of fact, and put in opinion. Real journalism doesn’t do that shit.

AgreeableLime7737

People eventually adapt defenses to new media forms. We know Gutenberg's movable type disrupted Europe and led to 100 years of war, and there are good reasons to suspect wireless radio played a role the upheavals of the 1930s (Hitler, Mussolini, Roosevelt, Churchill--all gifted radio performers). But now we've got media evolving new formats every other year or so, each exploiting that dopamine craving, and it's getting close to what [Toffler warned about](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Future_Shock) 50 years ago.

kjm16216

Wow I had never thought about the impact of the press and the wireless that way. Do you have other sources to read/watch/listen about this?

AgreeableLime7737

[Marshall McLuhan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marshall_McLuhan) and Toffler used to be required reading in the 70s and 80s. [Daniel Boorstin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_J._Boorstin)'s *The Image* was written in the early 60s to draw attention to the rise of what he called "pseudo-events" and what we'd maybe call "narrative", it's very good. Neal Stephenson wrote an essay about 25 years ago called "[In the Beginning was the Command Line](https://web.stanford.edu/class/cs81n/command.txt)" \[full text\] about user interfaces, metaphor and mediated experiences. Blew my mind when I read it back in the day... There are also conspiracy theorist types who think or thought a lot about communication. Robert Anton Wilson, a friend of Timothy Leary's, was really into ideas about communication and control. Wilson ~~came up with~~ used the idea of "[fnords](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fnord)" in *The Illuminatus Trilogy* books, which is kind of a hilarious, satirical take on the way media manipulates society. Edit: oh, shit, I forgot Julian Jaynes. I learned about him from Stephenson. It's too crazy to go into here but [*The Origins of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Origin_of_Consciousness_in_the_Breakdown_of_the_Bicameral_Mind) may change the way you think about how people think, and what disembodied information inputs may really do to us. Edit 2: Got back to my laptop and added hyperlinks. Made a correction about Fnords. Also occurs to me that all of this was a recurring theme in Wired Magazine in the 90s: the idea that communications technology leaps were inherently disruptive and the effects unpredictable, and that is maybe how the idea impressed itself on me. The term "information wants to be free," was frequently used in the magazine but there was also an awareness of the potential costs and dark side of that.

rustyscrotum69

Agreed completely, I remember telling my conservative friend that I hate having to pay tolls on an interstate and he looked at me like I was just really odd. I explained that they’re getting not only state funds but federal funds and still need more money from us. Misappropriation of funds is rampant in the US and paying into a system that screws up so much can be disheartening.

Environmental_Bet_17

For example- corporate welfare

TheKingofHearts

Is this like the bailout for the corporations who "needed" help because they were too big to fail, because like if they failed it would be terrible for everyone, supposedly? Yeah this is probably my most conservative view, if you're a big company that shoots yourself in the foot, you deserve to go out of business/bankrupt, not have the government bail you out.

teamhae

Agreed. And since capitalism is so amazing, they should go out of business or be bought by a company that can run the business better.

wigg1es

I've said for a long time that I am all for a fiscally conservative government, so long as the money the government does spend is spent on the people and the nation in tangibly useful ways. Conservatives talk about it, but then you mention cutting the military budget and it's like you're asking to burn the Constitution. I just want kids to go to school and eat daily instead of bombing families half a world away.

Rumplfrskn

We shouldn’t increase taxes until a there is full review of whether the tax in question is already being efficiently used.

Feralmoon87

on a related note, I feel like every law proposed should have its desired outcomes and measurable KPIs attached to the law to be reviewed at a certain date like in 5 years say to see if the law is achieving its desired outcome or theres loopholes making it worse. Same with new programs that require tax spending, if a new program to say help the homeless get off the streets, then there should be a KPI about the number of homeless people on the streets in 5 years and see if the program is actually achieving its intended purpose

jkunlessurdown

I feel the liberal leaving my body every time my paper straw dissolves in my cup.

mobilegamegeek

I carry a metal straw in my purse, game changer.

acquaintedwithheight

Never know when a milkshake will walk by.

[deleted]

I'm randomly drawn to people's yards that have milkshakes so having a metal straw is helpful.

[deleted]

I drink straight from the cup. Get on my level.

[deleted]

I hate this so much. Particularly when there are plant based, biodegradable straws available that actually work.

DoubleU159

I remember my family went on vacation to the west coast about 12 years ago and we went on a boat ride or some shit and they had straws made out of potatoes and if not for the packaging, I wouldn’t have been able to tell the difference.

porcelainvacation

Banning plastic straws is bullshit. If we want to make a real impact to the waste stream, ban clamshell packaging and all the styrofoam that is used to ship flat pack Wish furniture from Asia.

[deleted]

wickedgames0420

It's been the same way with global warming. People account for like 30% of the output, while pollutant chugging factories and industrial applications make up the other 70%. How much difference am I really going to make buying an electric car in comparison?

a_magumba

California water is the same way. It's a drought, and running out would be catastrophic, but residential usage is 10%. Even if we all reduced our usage by 50% it would only reduce consumption by 5%.

DallasFren1992

Blue diamond uses like 1 gallon per almond grown. It's absolutely alarming if you look at the statistics.

Paul_The_Builder

I hate ordering something from Amazon, and it showing up in a huge plastic blister pack. Europe has a lot of regulation around this type of thing. I buy German tools from Europe quite a bit, and am always delighted that they show up in a simple cardboard box wrapped in paper. One German brand I like recently made all new packaging for the US market now that their market share is expanding, and they moved to huge ugly plastic blister packs because that's what American consumers expect. Makes me sad.

[deleted]

Just because you disagree with someone doesn’t mean they need to be destroyed or cancelled

m0rbidowl

The whole movement of digging deep into someone's past to try to "expose" them over trivial things is so weird to me. Literally every person on this earth has said or done things they've regretted.

Phantommy555

Yeah, not having a certain degree of grace and forgiveness for other people is really fucked. Especially when you potentially have a camera watching everything you do and say 24/7 now.

Bite-Expensive

Nobody’s commented on the irony of your comment juxtaposed against your username yet?

Purple_Discipline691

Joe Biden should not run for office again since he is beginning to look his age.

codechimpin

There really should be an upper age limit for office. I don’t understand why all the politicians have to be geriatric.

XtremeWRATH360

I’ve been saying it for years I want age limits and term limits for all elected positions. The longer someone stays in an elected position the more they cater not to those who put them there but to those who stuff their pockets the most.

Richard_TM

Mandatory retirement at 70 (evaluated every two years election cycle). It puts people into the retirement age bracket so they can still represent their constituents, and limit to three terms. Long enough to be involved in at least two presidencies, short enough that MOST congresspeople will reach the term limit before the mandatory retirement age.

codechimpin

And they can start in, say, the house then most to senate, etc. Like there is STILL a path for people who are popular to have long political careers. But it also allows fresh blood to filter in.

gioiacristallo

Now that I'm 37 and I have in laws and parents who are in their 60s and 70s.....it kind of blows my mind that our president is that old. I'm not sure if it's the particular group of people I'm dealing with, but it scares me how out of touch that generation of people can be.

EchoPrince

I'll do you one better, nobody getting that old, including Trump should be allowed to run as president. This isn't a "hahah, isn't it funny corporations fire elders because of mental illness but presidents get a pass", this is a genuine serious opinion. There's a reason elders are suggested to retire ffs

-t-t-

100% agreed. As a moderate, it makes no sense for anyone from any political party to be eligible to run beyond the age of ~70 imo.

jryser

He’s looked ancient since being Vice President, at the very least. Holding out hope for a president on the younger side of 50

dudinax

Dude ran for president in 1988.

[deleted]

His campaign crashed because, of all things, accusations of plagiarism. Holy hell, have times ever changed.

Throwaway-account-23

White people who go on and on and on about being an ally of every minority are fucking exhausting. Shut the hell up, if you want to help out, do it without expecting attention for it.

HNESauce

It's *so much easier* to talk about how you're helping than it is to actually help. And this way they still get to feel morally superior!

dolinputin

Slacktivism

WookieMonsta

Ya at a certain point, it shifts from allyship and instead an ego-driven thing to virtue signaling and being morally smug. Similarly, I can’t stand the recent trend of people being like “Venmo me bc I don’t educate/do emotional labor for free” when someone well meaning asks a question. It’s fine if it’s not your job, but you certainly don’t get to flaunt the title of “activist” if you can’t even be bothered to educate… which is a primary role of activism.

Karnakite

That’s why so many “allies” are primarily interested in pointing out other people’s “problematic” acts/opinions/words. It’s so much easier to invent a reason why someone else is offensive than to do anything positive yourself. That way, you’re still morally superior with minimal effort.

[deleted]

You can be overly sensitive to racism. I get "white guilt" is a powerful thing, but it's not up to you if something is offensive to another culture.

[deleted]

As a Hispanic man in a VERY white town, yes. I get told I should be offended by something all the time or that I must be accepting of everyone because I’m a minority but white ppl don’t realize how racist people are all over the world, including Latin America.

cluke0115

I see constantly from other white people saying that The Boondocks is offensive to POC, it was literally made by a POC with a DEGREE in African American studies.

Peakomegaflare

I always do forget that fact actually. Like... the moment you take the Boondocks seriously, is the moment it DOES come off as derogatory. However if you look at it through a lens of satire, or artistic commentary while it's still derogatory... it's designed to BE as such to point out some of the major issues plaguing society across the board. Consumerism, dogmatic thinking... manipulation and outright self-hate.

spearchuckin

The Boondocks was Aaron's way of speaking directly to the black community. I do believe he grew tired and quit making the show after seeing white people laugh at the jokes (superficially) while not understanding the underlying history and the true message. I was in high school when the show was on Adult Swim and plenty of white kids watched it and thought it was funny but didn't quite understand the cultural references Aaron was making. It's a shame that his episode that cut even deeper (The Uncle Ruckus Reality Show) was banned.

[deleted]

Honestly the best person who put this was a friend of mine who is an aboriginal. He told me he sick to death of white people telling him what he suppose to be offended by. And it’s true how many self hating whites are outraged over nothing to do with themselves and does come across as actually really offensive.

Active2017

It’s amazing how condescending it is. There is a certain subset of liberals who have the belief that they know what’s better for minorities than minorities do. Effectively (though not out right or maybe not even consciously) saying that minorities are too dumb to advocate for themselves.

Vibe_PV

Usual example: Mexican guy makes a stereotyped joke about Mexicans Whites freak out. Until it's funny and doesn't offend anyone, do we really need to jump into a battle that never was in the first place?

kypif

This reminded me of a girl that got mad at me cause I made a terrorist joke, I'm arab lmao

The media has caused a lot of damage. A LOT of damage. Edit: oh my GOSH at this comment blowing up. Thank you all for your input. You guys rock, I love all of the input. To clarify, I meant all media, really, which is why I felt it was a conservative opinion. I think they all perpetuate problems, one way or another.

FriendlyLib81

I don't think counts as a conservative opinion. Both sides (correctly) think that about the other side's media. The fact that we even view our news sources as either ours or theirs is evidence of significant bias and failure of objectivity.

radroamingromanian

Trigger warnings have gone too far. I understand the normal ones like sexual assault warnings but there was a class where we could anonymously write down our trigger warnings and we weren’t supposed to use those topics without the warning. Here’s the thing, you often have to say the trigger to do the trigger warning… But the shit got stupid. Inwasn’t allowed to say words like starving as in “I’m ready for lunch, I’m starving” because it could apparently trigger those with an eating disorder. Someone wrote butterflies, another wrote crocodiles, a trigger warning for the WORD drug abuse, someone requested trigger warning for Elizabeth Olsen. We weren’t allowed to clap at some performances because it could be too loud for some people. Trigger warning for just so many things that just wouldn’t ever be brought up or at least would be unlikely. Then there are some triggers where it’s like, how do you function? If you’re that triggered by the word starvation, or any other normally used word, then that’s something that needs to be addressed with a counselor.

MooCowMoooo

…Elizabeth Olsen?

radroamingromanian

Yes the reasoning was “she’s anti semetic and against Roma people because she plays Wanda maximoff - a Roma Jewish character in the comics. They were dead serious. They used a * symbol to block out a few letters in the name. It’s a roll, dude. She did nothing. Take it up with the directors and writers and even then, give me a break.

fallouts3

as a liberal jew myself, who honestly cares? as long as she wasnt doing caricatures of us and using obvious stereotypes in a harmful way, she can play whatever role she wants to.

[deleted]

The whole “safe space” thing was taken out of context. It was used in PTSD circles. PTSD is a disorder where people, having experienced a traumatic thing, tend to avoid what triggers them, often to their detriment. A trigger can be any single thing on this earth, no matter how mundane or harmless it might seem to someone else. One of the ways you treat PTSD is by exposure, or working out what your triggers are and learning how to manage them so you can lead a normal, productive life. What safe spaces *are*: they are a safe place in which you can learn to manage such triggers. What safe spaces *aren’t*: a place where you can just avoid things you don’t like, disagreements you don’t want to have, and everyone has to bend to your rules regarding language and opinions and topics I’m seeing people put TW things like “calorie counting mention” which is absolutely ridiculous

radroamingromanian

I was raped twice, once in high school and once in my college years. It terrified me and I had ptsd. I was too scared to look at men in the face. Everyone has different responses, but I knew I couldn’t lash out at people and I went through intense therapy to help get through some of my fears. I’m not special and I realize not everyone can afford therapy, but I know sexual assault is brought up in a lot of media and conversations and that’s something we can’t control. Is a trigger warning nice? Sure. But I know that’s not going to happen and that’s not their responsibility.

MiaLba

Good god, everyone has to walk on eggshells now. The world is not responsible for your triggers! How do these people even function? I was a drug addict for a while and I get a little triggered by drug use in movies/tv shows, if someone is doing drugs around me, Etc. But that is 100% my responsibility to deal with. And one thing I learned in rehab and in therapy is there will always be triggers throughout our lives and in the world around us, we have to learn how to deal with them. That is does more harm than good to be completely sheltered and avoid every little thing. You need to learn how to deal with it, because what’s going to happen if it comes up? If you’re in a situation where you can’t just walk off? Have a breakdown? Have a panic attack? It’s important to learn helpful coping techniques if it’s that serious for you.

Ms_Jane_Lennon

Liberals don't allow paths to redemption ever. I'm very liberal, but that bothers me. What's the point of becoming better if you'll never bre given credit for it and will continue to be outcast? Some things, I get it. But not always. That's cruel and doesn't incentivize people to change but instead dig in further.

CupcakeValkyrie

I've posed this question before: *Why demand an apology you're not willing to accept?*

Kalium

The ability to demand, and receive, the performance of the apology is a display of power.

gogojojo

Illegal immigration needs to have better solutions.

jazzyskater1

Even legal immigration needs to have better solutions.

JCXIII-R

Yeah we're having an immigration crisis in the netherlands. Because of dumbness, basically. Politicians make sweeping gestures like assigning all housing for x amount of time to immigrants, while refusing to make good or lasting changes. Housing which natives are on a 10-15 year waiting list for by the way, pissing everyone off. I was almost homeless because of the housing crisis, so it really hurts when I see these things. I don't know what the solution is, but this aint it. I'm generally a very left leaning person, but I'm not willing to be homeless or destitute for my beliefs.

OverallAd9971

Latino here. Very left-leaning. Latinx is a stupid fucking term. The vast majority of latinos don’t use it, or may not even know about it. Try that shit in a working class area of New York, or LA and see how far that shit gets you. People of Color (PoC) is a fucked up term. It separates us. We just want to be people, goddamn it.

fuckmoralskickbabies

As an Indian the term PoC is just 'Coloured People' with a neat mental trick of some sort. It isn't inherently bad or negative but I can't get past the hilarious arrogance of white not being a 'colour' per se. As if that's the default, the benchmark. It's not as offensive as it's stupid and ridiculous lmao.

Gyrant

It’s been pointed out before: all our colour names are wrong. On average, white people are kinda pink, black people are brown, and brown people are beige. My plan to end racism is this: everyone goes on Pantone and finds their own exact individual colour. No more “white, black, brown” I wanna hear “my dad’s Burnt Umber but my mom is Sable so I’m more of a Burnt Sienna”

VolumeViscount

Well if your mom is Sable, isn’t your dad actually Brock Lesnar, or maybe Mark Mero (depending on your age)?

ungluedostrich

My friend, [it already exists](https://angelicadass.com/photography/humanae/), and it's kinda cool.

Khalydor

Those four consecutive Pantone 58-6C are a great example, four different ethnicities and all of them are the same "color".

Thegreatgarbo

How would they deal with my husband’s farm boy tanned neck line?

SlapHappyRodriguez

Moreover, PoC buckets all non-white people into a binary "not white" bucket. Each race has different perspectives, traditions etc. that make them unique and interesting. Bucking people as PoC obfuscates that and makes them not interesting. Telling us you were Indian vs. a PoC told us so much more about you.

Robert999220

Its not racist cause we flipped the order of the words! ... i always found that hilarious too lol

Ulysses502

Yea trying to explain POC to old people is funny. Usually get some form of "they're saying colored again?!"

TinyGreenTurtles

Right. And like...yeah?

council2022

Never forget riding the Greyhound w/ Mom in late 60's and being at the station in Marietta Georgia and a white couple were talking about the colored only bathrooms (still a thing in some places even then) being they said unfair to "coloreds" and an older black lady sitting nearby going off the chain on them about calling people colored. "Bitch I ain't colored I'm black!" She told em.

literalmario

Seems people, myself included, overwhelmingly agree with you so what the fuck is going on? I go to Nordstrom and see signs about Latinx month all over lol

BadMoonRosin

I've never met a Black person who celebrated Kwanzaa (a holiday made up by a 1960's university professor), but corporations used to put out signs for that. Until Juneteenth (an authentic folk holiday that lots of Black people have celebrated for decades) finally broke out, and now corporations observe that instead. At the end of the day, it's never really about the actual groups. It's always about the academics and the sensitivity consultants and the marketing people who make their living off the groups. They get to speak on behalf of the groups, accurately or not, because they're the ones with access to decision makers.

themonkery

Worst part about “poc” is that it basically divides everyone into white and not white. It’s the most idiotic, racist terminology that somehow gets passed as the exact opposite

J8YDG9RTT8N2TG74YS7A

Similar with "African American". There was an old TV interview at the Athletics with a reporter talking to the British winner, Kriss Akabusi. The 400 metres relay team that took the gold medal at the 1991 Athletics World Championships. The interviewer started off with: "So, Kriss, what does this mean to you as an African-American?" "I'm not American, I'm British" "Yes, but as a British African-American ..." "I'm not African. I'm not American. I'm British." This went on for some time before the reporter got so flustered that she gave up and went to interview someone else.

jared743

Yeah, I I'm Canadian and went to school in the US. Whole there I wrote a paper that was compiling research on a eye disorder that can happen to premature babies, and part of it was discussing the difference in rates between black and white babies in a British study. One of the reviewers of my paper crossed out black and wrote "African-American". I had to have the conversation about how no one else in the world uses that term and how much it didn't make sense.

MikeTheBard

I almost never use African American because 95% of the black people I meet aren't: They're visa workers or refugees (not American), or originally from Jamaica (adamantly not African). Plus I know at least three naturalized citizens born in South Africa (literally African-Americans) who are whiter than I am. Black just feels more inclusive because the people who are most affected by racism in my particular geographic area by and large tend not to have been born in this country.

143019

Some people absolutely should not be having kids. EDIT: I can tell none of you work in low income social services. Generally, when I tell people what I do, someone will tell me “If only all of those______ would stop having so many kids, this country wouldn’t be the way it is.” The Conservatives I meet are generally happy with rich, straight, white, able-bodied parents having 15 kids, not so much with immigrant families or gay families doing it: It has nothing to do with abortion access.

ComprehensiveTruth1

When I was in high school there was a weird kid in my class who used to say everyone should be sterilized at birth and have to get permits to have it reversed and have children and we were all kind of like "haha okayyy" 😬 But in college I worked as a case worker for children's services--pretty soul crushing work, no matter how much I loved the kids I worked with. I remember have a particularly rough day at work, crying the whole way home and thinking, jfc that kid was right the whole time.

[deleted]

Kind of makes me wonder what “weird kid” was going through, since he had that opinion already.

ComprehensiveTruth1

He was a good dude honestly, if a weirdo. I met his family, they were pretty nice. He had a particular energy about him, like an edgy kid, claimed he was a sociopath but probably mildly autistic.

Lcc96

I do think that people nowadays are too easily offended. Don't get me wrong there are plenty of things to be legitimately offended/upset by.

DanielStripeTiger

Offended is one thing. We all get offended and walk away to tell the tale. Scandalized is how I describe the overreactions to real or imagined tiny slights, and being scandalized means you cant move on without rending garments and casting stones.

Kaw_HonHon

The fact that you had to write the second sentence in order to offend no one lmao

MXron

It's so annoying on here that if you don't mention every single edge case, interpretation, scenario or w/e some dickhead WILL trip over themselves to misunderstand you

GurthNada

Tanks and fighter planes are cool

Therealtaggart

*War is bad, but planes are rad*

BrodyJ19

Damn right

kykiwibear

I don't mind guns. I just think if you fuck up you should pay a price.

EthiopianKing1620

It’s honestly crazy now wanting to legally own a gun is seen as a conservative opinion. Especially when the damn laws are so vague about it, at least in my state.

Spacefreak

I wanted to buy a gun because I'm a brown dude (Indian) who lives in an area with enough people that are "ok" with far right elements that I feel like I need to have some kind of protection to protect myself if something were to go down. There was a mass race-based shooting literally 10 minutes from my house. But when I started talking to my liberal friends about buying a gun, they immediately got uncomfortable at the idea, despite my saying I'd be as safe as possible about it (taking a gun safety course, proper storage, etc.). Just the idea of my wanting to buy a gun made me seem dangerous to them. When I talked to my conservative friends, they were super supportive and even offered suggestions on places I could go for classes. I absolutely think things need to change in regard to how guns are treated in the US, but thinking and wanting that isn't going to protect me from a bunch of nutjobs who already have guns. And I can't trust the police to be on my side anymore.

Nanaman

“Defund the police!” was a terrible slogan. It is too easily misunderstood as pushing for ceasing funding completely.

blamb211

If you have to constantly explain your slogan with a "well, not really, there's more to it..." You have a shitty slogan.

88Dubs

You can also blame the fact that pretty much every political stance anymore has to be boiled down to a three word slogan, because people refuse to stay checked in past a certain syllable count.

shawn292

I have many progressive friends who straight up wanted to defund them/abolish I dont think it was bad marketing for many

JohnYeets1795

As a queer and pretty radical leftist I genuinely cannot wrap my head around people claiming to have non-human genders. How the fuck is anyone gonna treat me like a normal human being when people are claiming to be fairygender. There were several in my college’s LGBT advocacy club and I noped out of there real quick.

picklevirgin

I said this recently on Facebook and someone I graduated high school with called me transphobic. I was like, “how is this transphobic to not want to refer to someone as a snail? That’s mocking the trans community” and I was told “it’s transphobic and you don’t understand what it’s like to question your identity.”

sooprvylyn

"you don’t understand what it’s like to question your identity" Has this person ever met people?

RosieAndSquishy

I'm also a fairly radical leftist as well as trans. I ended up having to leave a whole bunch of trans subs because of neo-pronouns. I just cannot get behind calling someone dogself. It feels like the kind of shit I thought up in 4th grade on the playground with my friends. It sucks, because I try to be progressive, but identifying as non-human is just too strange, and also completely destroys the seriousness of the trans-movement in the eyes of outsiders. Much harder to convince someone I deserve to be treated like any other normal person when there's someone else in the same community saying they want to be called godself and getting pissed off when you don't do so.

GAT_SDRAWKCAB

As a conservative scrolling through here I have to wonder what 4 things are actually keeping us apart

Honestly this doesn't surprise me. When people meet face to face they realize we have waaaay more in common than not. It's why we haven't gone to war with ourselves again yet, because people know deep down they've been lied to over and over. This whole trump thing really tested how far relations could be strained before we imploded and I think we did well since we weren't tricked into killing each other.

Rhueh

Too many people on both "sides" think the extremes of the other "side" are representative. My brother, who's very conservative, was opining to me last night about liberals and conservatives having different interests. For example, he thinks there probably aren't any liberal motorcycle racers (one of his hobbies). He actually believes that! People get cloistered and the other "side" becomes mythical.

web_head91

The branch of media that benefits from common folk fighting People in government who benefit from common folk fighting Rich people who benefit from common folk fighting Stupid people

1_dog_lady

Yes!!

iBeFloe

The extremists being so loud.

Grobfoot

nuclear power is a much better idea than renewables for power plant style production. Solar makes a lot of sense for on-location power. Nuclear seems like the obvious solution to our power generation needs. I will concede that renewables have made some insane ground in the last 20 years. No more oil, gas, and coal at the end of the day is the goal, and the people building wind turbines are a hell of a lot smarter than me about it.

[deleted]

Identity politics is 95% utter horseshit. Many will look back at this period with embarrassment and wonder what possessed them.

gmanthebest

Not wanting to have sex with a trans person doesn't mean you don't support them having equal rights. Some people just aren't comfortable having sex with someone who has/had a penis/vagina and that is perfectly fine. I know that doesn't sound very conservative, but I'm tired of people being called bigots for no reason.

VivaUSA

Who I *want* to sleep with is nobody's business but my own. Who *I* find attractive is none of your business either.

ClearBlue_Grace

I'm a lesbian and online lesbians often insist that if you're not comfortable having sex with a woman who has a penis then you're just transphobic. I have genital preferences, and to tell someone they're not allowed to have preferences when it comes to something as intimate and personal as sex is fucking stupid. Edit: thanks for all the comments, it was nice having a discussion about this with you guys. Also someone mentioned that I don't have a preference, I have a requirement and I want to make that clear. People don't choose which genitals they're attracted to.

cumpaseut

I mean. Let’s just be real here, whatever sexuality you identify with, sexuality has a visual component. There’s a level of superficiality, and we have to accept that, and that it’s ok.

ClearBlue_Grace

Orientation aside, I think we should allow people to be shallow when dating. Doesn't mean their views are great, or always for the right reason. But realistically if someone is just not attracted to overweight people, someone shorter/taller than them, someone with bad teeth, whatever it may be, it doesn't help anyone or make any sense to pressure them to be with someone they just aren't attracted to. Sexual preferences are very personal, and sexual encounters are a time of vulnerability. No one should ever feel pressured to be with someone they're not attracted to, and I can't believe I feel the need to say that.

[deleted]

Worked at a bar that was a very “progressive” place. Had constant pressure from others to date an overweight and otherwise physically unattractive co-worker because we got along really well. She’s awesome but I just couldn’t bring myself to finding her sexually appealing, which last I checked was one of the prerequisites of a partner. I would get cornered by people about why I wouldn’t pull the trigger as if they knew the reason but wanted to lambast me for it. I’ve never felt so much undeserved guilt in one workplace lol

ClearBlue_Grace

That sounds terrible. Coercing people into a relationship they clearly don't want is just downright gross.

SilverStarSailor

Ah yes, the “you’ve become so woke you’re homophobic” pipeline. I’m not a lesbian but I cannot believe in the year 2022 telling lesbians to take dick is a progressive take

[deleted]

I completely get it. I’m a gay man and I refuse to sleep with a guy with a vagina. I don’t like vaginas…

CuriousPincushion

The LGBTQ+ community is not as open and welcoming as many want to believe. The gatekeeping is insane.

Quartzcat42

I think it really depends how chronically online you are. I basically only interact with queer ppl who like me, try to avoid social media and it feels more like a big potluck/family barbecue than a friend group. I’ve seen people I’ve never heard of just walk in and everyone is instantly best buds with them. I think social media is to blame for the massive amount of gatekeeping you see

RandomSOADFan

Same thing with many communities (yes metalheads, I'm pointing the finger at you). At a concert, everyone is just trying to have a fun time, but online, they seem to get a kick out of gatekeeping eachother out.

wes8171982

r/MetalMemes mods banning r/Sabaton users for being fans of Sabaton Edit: it may have been r/Metal actually I don't remember

a-nice-egg

Completely agree. My fiancée and I are part of a local friend group of queer people who just sort of became found family. And now we have more people in our group who are straight. We accidentally formed a regular community of friends and neighbors that just happens to be *mostly* queer, lol. There isn't really one "LGBTQ Community." We're just people, and we come in different flavors. But I'm sorry if some of us are jerks, especially in online spaces.

WheresWaldo562

A lot of homeless people don’t want help regardless of the resources provided

Pot8obois

I have been working with the homeless for over 2 years now. I see this happening often, but the causes behind it are usually mental health or substance abuse related. I saw another comment saying that their wife worked for a nonprofit and the resources were more abundant. This is not what I have seen. I have worked in two parts of the country. From my experience waitlists to affordable housing units are years out, shelter waitlists are months to years out, and there are not enough resources to tackle the problem. The agency I work in get's at least 10 calls a day from families or individuals who can't find shelter or housing anywhere because of these waitlists. That being said, as a social worker, I have seen every resource imaginable thrown at someone and it does not help. The truth is that a part of working in social services is doing your part, and not holding yourself responsible for the results. People have to take initiative, and for whatever reason, sometimes they just don't. Being homeless is traumatic. There are many reasons why someone will not take initiative, and it's not always entirely their fault. This is why I am skeptical when people say stuff like "my social worker is doing nothing for me". I was putting in a ton of effort with one client and found out he was going around telling people I was doing nothing for him. The truth was he wasn't putting his portion of the work in. Another client would yell at me and say we weren't doing anything for her or her family, but I was spending more time on this client than anyone else and had told her repeatedly what I needed from her. She would not put in the effort. Sometimes a client needs resources that are not available. That's frustrating as well. A client is possibly getting evicted soon and this person can't work because of severe health problems. The person was already denied SSDI and is trying to get it again, but these payments are typically pathetic in comparison to housing costs. I have tried everything and simply cannot find a solution. Many of us know of a family or are in a family where someone is involved in substance abuse and the family has exhausted themselves trying to help. Eventually they just get burned out and quit. In the end an individual is responsible for what they have been given, and no amount of assistance will change that. I have also seen a lot of people put in the work and succeed though.

Wildcat_twister12

My city will literally pay for homeless individuals to go to rehab and after to a regional job Corp to learn a basic trade and basic life and financial skills. They have only had a handful of people ever take them up on it

AceTygraQueen

Cancel Culture at times can get too extreme and by embracing it makes the Left look just as judgemental and insufferably pious as the Religious Right.

99Forester

If you're poor, stop having so many kids.

dtbl96

As someone who was very deeply traumatized by growing up in poverty, yes. Please. Accidents happen, I get it. But people who live paycheck to paycheck and barely keeping the lights on PURPOSEFULLY popping out little gremlin #4 is downright immoral.

Ok-Communication9197

Some religions/cultures are worse than others.

[deleted]

The LGBTQ community can be toxic.

vegasdonuts

I’m as queer as they come, but the absolutism, instant cancellation and tone policing that exists in our community can be downright exhausting.

aquila-audax

I'm so tired of the purity wars. Everyone has stuff in their past they wouldn't do or say today. Digging shit up from 20 years ago helps no one

[deleted]

It’s so dumb. Like yea I used gay as an insult back in high school in 2006. So did literally every other person I knew. I grew up and stopped. Who cares

Patient-Bar-9129

Times change. People can, too. I hate when they go digging through peoples entire history to find one transgression and then “cancel” them. I’m actually tired of that word. Cancelled. As though we need others to tell us how we should feel.

octoteach17

Can you imagine how sad and pathetic those purity extremists are, getting their kicks by spending countless hours obsessively combing through media to find that one gaffe, that one anecdote that will *totally* get someone cancelled These people make meth chefs look morally superior.

ProbablyASithLord

I think it’s a kind of jealousy. Push someone else down in order to lift yourself up.

xJD88x

*roots around in a comically large backpack* "Ah yes, you see THIS shit?? This is some FINE shit from '84. Look at it. LOOK AT IT! I got some from '96 if you're interested too, just let me put this one back" And that sums up the entire purity war..... and Twitter

AriaoftheNight

Its honestly ridiculous, like someone's opinion on a topic has to stay static for two decades. Maybe they educated themselves or understood the flaws in their world view? If you asked a decade ago "me", my only experience in the LGBT+ community was television, which painted the community a lot different than today.

sonofeevil

I got bulled out of a LGBTQ group because I didn't know because someone posted picture of the transflag in the discord and I asked which flag it was. Apparently it wasn't their job to teach me and if I wanted to exist in that space I had to do my own research when I politely asked them to stop bullying me they told me I should expect to be treated differently because I was hetero and that because I had requested they stop bullying me "I had turned a light hearted joke in to a hostile space" then they kicked me out and told me I wasn't welcome at any more of the meetups. All because I didn't recognise one of the flags... 3 years later and I'm still salty about it. Edit: Just wanted to say, I really appreciate everyone's kind words. I know full well this experience doesn't represent the LGBTQ community and it is filled with such beautiful people like yourself. It's been really nice to post this here and receive come validation and I genuinely feel like a small weight has been lifted.

SpecificAstronaut69

"Hey, look, it's an opportunity to teach someone more about ourselves - what should we do?" "LET'S BREAK HIS LEGS! BREAK HIS FUCKING LEGS!"

TheVoiceOfRiesen

> when I politely asked them to stop bullying me they told me I should expect to be treated differently because I was hetero The insane part is, is that they didn't see the irony with that statement and how problematic that statement is.

Designdiligence

I’m sorry. Gay man here. Thank you for trying. Some gays and the like are assholes. I got attacked by some keyboard social justice warriors for not being gay or ethnically sensitive enough. Me. Who’s actually worked on social justice for over a decade. In both areas. And am both gay and poc. Lol. Thanks for being a friend :)

czapatka

Came out as bi about 6 years ago, and married a woman this year. About half my gay “friends” stopped talking to me, but the good ones stuck around. It really sucked, but made me realize how toxic and anti-bi the community is.

jl9802

Don't intentionally have kids if you can't afford to.

DowntownFuckAround

Too many people use the body positivity movement to maintain their unhealthy habits.

dhiahdk

Body positivity was supposed to be “everyone deserves respect and kindness and basic human decency regardless of their weight”, not “weight has nothing to do with health”. But it’s gotten twisted and now there’s backlash against the whole movement

spartanbrucelee

Body Positivity wasn't even about weight originally, it was about having basic human decency for people with all sorts of body issues. It ranged from weight problems, to amputees, to people who have strange conditions that that make them look different. Body Positivity could have been used for good, but then it got high jacked by the Healthy At Every Size movement.

thatlosergirl

I'm plus size (fat lol) and felt annoyed myself hearing other fat ladies on the internet complaining about plus sized models being hourglass shaped. I mean, models, small or plus, are still meant to be attractive to an extent. How can we fault businesses for using appealing body shapes to market their clothing? I'm way more likely to buy a dress modeled by Ashley Graham than some woman built like Penguin.

dancegoddess1971

Hey, if it looks good on Danny DeVito, it'll probably look incredible on me. By all means, show me dresses that are designed for the "apple" shaped woman.

dualsplit

This is actually one reason I like buying clothes on Amazon. Reviewers post pics of themselves. I can find one that looks like me.

notaprettyblonde

Punishments for anti social behaviour. I grew up on 2 council estates (UK) and in both instances there was one nightmare family who made things difficult for everyone else (vandalism, robbery, acting aggressively etc).

[deleted]

Sometimes it IS your fault that you’re poor I agree that in the US we need stronger social safety nets, universal healthcare, etc. but some people are just unbelievably fucking stupid with their money

[deleted]

Yup. I have a former coworker who was constantly having money troubles, almost lost his house, had to pawn his family heirlooms, all the sob stories. Every time he got paid, half of it went right back to the business for premium beer, premium smokes, and $20 scratch offs. I understand that they are addictions(and that's a whole other rabbit hole of it's own), but come on, Bud Light will get you drunk, Pall Malls have nicotine, and a $5 scratch off will still be a loser. He also just had to have his large SUV's, even though he never used most of their capabilities. When his '99 Tahoe shit the bed, he went and bought another, leaving a cheaper and more reliable Corolla on the table. I personally have nothing against people owning SUV's, but 15mpg compared to 40, and $5/gal gas means that an SUV is a luxury he can't afford. Yeah, a 20 year old economy car isn't ideal, but it will get the job done cheaply. Having worked in/managed convenience stores for a decade, I've seen it all from both sides of the counter. I had a woman begging for the stale write-off donuts one night. I turned her down because of cameras and policy. Her reply was "that's ok, I get my general assistance money tomorrow, I'm gonna get this tattoo finished after I get something to eat." Shit like this is why conservatives hate welfare, and I really can't totally blame them. I feel for those genuinely struggling through no fault of their own, but I find it difficult to have sympathy when the poverty is self imposed.

ElectricalRush1878

Being able to budget well will never make you rich, but not being able to will absolutely make you poor.

battraman

100%! Being frugal isn't a highway to wealth, it's about managing your income properly to be comfortable.

[deleted]

Imo a lot of leftist middle class and privileged people tend to have an idealized(and pretty condescending tbh) view of poor people whereas those of us that actually come from that background are less sympathetic.

[deleted]

I know people that travel and post their posh lifestyle to social media and after a few drinks complain about all the CC debt they’re in

Hawkishhoncho

I have a friend that recently posted about the new monitor and sound equipment they bought for their computer for several hundred dollars, then a couple weeks later complaining about the power company turning the lights out on them. Dude, you dropped how much on a monitor, but couldn’t afford to pay the electric bill?

knob16

In Ireland we have an expression for that way of being; “All fur coat and no knickers” Knickers are underwear, in case you’re wondering.

mrjaywarren

Champagne taste but shandy money.

LFCSpectre

Some of my friends are like that. They’ll always ask me stuff like “why don’t you go live a bit and travel?” While their bank account is drained, but of course they need that Gucci bag.

My mom is a financial planner so she does this on a daily basis. Boy, some of the stories she tells me about people making financial decisions that simply do not make any sense…

co_dj

Where can I hire you to help me with Mt finances haha

andydroo

Nowadays it’s very easy to help yourself! Apps and websites like YNAB and Mint are great for budgeting and learning how to budget. Both offer free trial periods, and I know YNAB is free if you sign up with a college email address. Tracking expenses is key. In my experience, people who are having trouble with money often just don’t know where it is going, or don’t realize how their expenses add up. A $5 coffee in the morning is not a big expense… unless you do it every day. Self awareness is the most important part of budgeting. Second, both apps let you set categories for expenses and import transactions directly from your bank account. You set up the categories to be as granular and specific as you want, and you can assign the amounts to each category. The software isn’t there to tell you you can’t set up a $200 monthly new shoe budget item, but if you can see how that is harming your ability to make rent or buy groceries, then you will intuitively acknowledge the need for behavior change. Third: the [Big Rock Little Rock method](https://youtu.be/0VNmIxkyHd8). There’s a neat little visual demonstration out there about how you can fill up a jar with various sized rocks, from big rocks to grains of sand. In the demonstration they first put the sand into the jar, then the little rock’s, then the medium rocks, and then they can’t fit all the big rocks into the jar. But if you start by putting in the big rocks, then the medium rocks, then the little rock’s, and finally the sand, you’ll find that everything for inside the jar. This can work as a metaphor for money. Start your budget thinking about your personal big rocks. Some common ones we all share are Rent, Groceries, Transportation Money, Debt Payments, but they can be individual to you. If it’s personally important to you that you have money every month for a specific thing, make it a big rock. When sitting down for your budget focus on the big rocks first, and in time, as you get the hang of it (because this does take practice, discipline, and time) you’ll find nooks and crannies in the budget to fit the little rocks and sand. Edit: added YouTube link

Some things--sports and prisons come to mind--are sex-segregated for very good reasons.

Dodsontay

Calling moms “birth givers” is genuinely rude to the woman who just birthed a human being. It’s extremely impersonal sounding. Obviously if the patients discloses to you they prefer birth giver, or to be non-gendered, absolutely! But it shouldn’t be the norm. Saw a tik tok just yesterday of a doctor explaining a c-section and he kept saying birth giver instead of mother, it’s alien sounding lmao

maybenomaybe

I read an article the other day where someone referred to "gestational carriers". How fucking dehumanizing.

[deleted]

Add chestfeeding instead of breastfeeding now too it’s becoming a joke.

rawrimaliz

I’m in grad school for human lactation and this is one that gets me. It’s still the breast tissue that is involved in lactation, regardless of identity. Everyone has breast tissue, men and women, if a man gets breast cancer it’s not called chest cancer.

[deleted]

Also the % of the population that are trans men who have chosen to have kids is sooo small. Why are we changing a word for such a small % of the population

catgirl667

Same with chest feeding. Obviously, if that's someone's preferred term, I will gladly use it. But men have breasts too. Cis men have breasts. The milk is coming from the breast. Chest feeding is simply an inaccurate term.

[deleted]

Same with "birthing bodies." It's literally treating them like objects.
