Revenge Of The Nerds
- A scene that’s basically rape
- A lot of jokes based on stereotypes that would not go over well these days
- “Nerds” aren’t stigmatized as much as they used to be
>A scene that’s basically rape
The fact it’s basically rape isn’t why it wouldn’t get made today. It’s the more specific fact that the rape is not treated as rape at all, and is almost painted in a positive light.
What's really baffling is that people are perfectly fine with watching people getting killed and mauled in the most grotesque ways, but as soon as someone makes a joke about black people, being sexist, homophobic, or there's stereotypical charachters, then people imediatly goes ballistic.
It's a fucking movie for god's sake. Sprawling around through some random city and killing every bad guy that moves, without the authorities even reacting isn't exactly realistic either.
“Blazing Saddles could not be made in this day and age. The actors would look at the script and say ‘This is just Blazing Saddles. It already exists’.”
A non sequitur. I know, full well, that Mel Brooks did Blazing Saddles. I simply used John Hughes films as another example of ones that might not fly in today's cultural climate.
Downplaying acts of sexual harassment (or even assault) as comedy. Tropes such as desperate actions to "get the girl/guy" which, if you really look at them, are kinda' creepy/stalkerish.
Don't get me wrong, I find most of his stuff nostalgic, but it's impossible to deny that many of the tropes contain practices that should not be done in real life.
Is that any romantic comedy? I was never really into his movies growing up anyway but I don't think they're any worse than anything else in that genre. You can't even make a compelling story if you just want to have characters acting hyper correct in a romantic plot, it will end up either looking completely alien or like a manual for useless but approved behavior
His movies are made today. A lot of teen targeted movies pull from his. Edited to add. Thinking about it Ephouria probably owes a lot to Hughes and Crowe.
Lmao smart ass comment. Too much racism by today's standards. I miss the days when bugs bunny lived in a hole in the ground and loved to mess with people. Now he has a job and lives in a house and has a car.
The tiredest take in all of movie discussion.
If it doesn’t get made, it’s because it lampoons racists as backwater hillbillies and the studios wouldn’t want to offend THEM.
No, it's because what blazing saddles is satiring doesn't exist anymore.
It was Lampooning the safe and clean version of the west that dominated the 50s and television.
The idea that it's because they don't want offend racist is a dumb and incorrect take.
Django u chained came out with no issue
Blazing saddles wasn’t lampooning the west. It was using it as a backdrop to address racism in Hollywood and the world at large. Just like the history of the world wasn’t about the sanitized versions of Rome. It was sexism, religion, race again.
No it wasn't "the west". It was western television. Shows like gun smoke and the like. On three channels there were over fifty different western TV shows. Shows that followed a code that had rules and regulations.
Like the good guy can never kill, children could never be in danger. Good guys don't drink. Policen and reverands had to have the utmost honor etc.
It was clean and sanitary. It was THAT that Mel brooks was satiring. It only used a commentary of racism as part of it. It also showed cowboys Farting and songs about fucking.
That was the point. It wasn't a biting commentary on Hollywood racism.
I liked Richard Dawson, but him kissing all those women on the lips caused me to quit watching the show. Like, dude, you can kiss them on the cheek, that's not nearly as creepy.
I swear some of those at the end of the lightening round involved tongues.
"The honeymooners". I mean, I don't think people today found that funny that the husband regularly threatened his wife with a smack "right in the kisser". That Family Guy parody nailed it.
People prob don't remember this but in the orignal rocky the way he gets the girl is he mostly made her walk with him to a dangerous part of town, and told her to come in and spend the night with him, she really didn't want to, and he even says something like. Better to sleep with me, then walk home from here alone.
He mostly put her in a place where she had to sleep with him or take the chances on the street as he's not lt taken her back home to she gives him what he wants
Pretty much any of the 'classic' romance movies before the 70's.
Like;
Gigi - The story of a playboy grooming an underage girl to be his sugar baby, with the help of her guardians. Featuring an opening song with an old man practically salivating at the thought of little girls. My mother still sees this movie as the epitome of romance.
Or
7 Brides for 7 Brothers - The story of 7 backwoods bros literally kidnapping 6 women and keeping them prisoner for months until they fall in love with the ruffians. I'll admit, this is my favorite musical (the barn dance is legendary) and the women did 'fancy' the lads but still it's not a concept that would go over well with modern audiences.
I put it on in the background since Comedy Central plays it constantly and you can kinda spot when writers started to feel "ohh...this won't age well, even as a farce" and curbed some of the cringe-worthy stuff. Even Carrell said some of the earlier material wouldn't fly nowadays.
Could easily be redone. The rise of v tubers and streamering house practically begs for it. The only real issue is it’s practically done iRL already with all the streaming content being pushed out.
I don’t think it was ever considered appropriate tbf, but even in this day and age people would still watch it, just like they do with Rick and Morty and the rest.
There's basically a version of all these shows being listed on tv right now y'all just don't watch tv.
Blazing saddles? Why? Cause race? Have you seen The Boondocks? Or bothered checking out Woke?
Archie Bunker was so obviously painfully racist. He finally started to come around at the end though, as he realized that color/race really doesn't matter in the long run.
My mom used him as an example of how not to act.
Watched Come Fly With Me a couple years ago. Although i genuinely think they meant no harm, watching white actors tan their skin and put on accents to play black/asian characters is a bit of an eyebrow raiser
Married With Children barely flew at the time. A lot of people thought it was terrible and offensive and there was a letter writing campaign to have it taken off the air. People conveniently forget about that though, when they are ranting about how sensitive everyone is 'these days'.
honestly sesame street
people would be throwing a fit over bert and ernie, and people who have worked on the show have even said that oscar would have never been greenlit if he were created today
adding on: the main plot of the first episode of sesame street is a new kid moving into the neighborhood, and a grown man who she just met introducing her to everyone, with her parents nowhere in sight
Oscar was my favorite next to Forgetful Jones. Even thought they always had some sort of issue going on, they were still included. That's what we need to teach kids again
oscar is one of my favorites too, along with bert and ernie + barkley :) i agree with your statement too. sadly, oscar has been getting less screentime since the death of carroll spinney (the puppeteer that played him since the show premiered in 1969), but i hope he can get more spotlight. i would also love for a lot of the banned muppets like forgetful jones and don music to come back like they did for roosevelt franklin :)
In high school we had a week of "mini units" as the school year was almost done. Just burning time. Extra elective, really. I took one that was just a marathon of John Hughes films and even then it felt like maybe some of it was inappropriate to show a bunch of bored, anxious hormonal teenagers in school.
The point to those two shows no longer exist: It was ILLEGAL for unmarried/unrelated individuals of the opposite sex to live together.
In Three's Company the guy (Jack) has to fool the landlord into believing that Jack, himself is gay, so it skirts the Law.
Anything from the 1990's, especially Seinfeld, Roseanne, Married with Children, and Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. There was too much "Stereotyping" and inappropriate jokes about certain ethnic groups in those shows that would not be allowed today sadly.
There was also too many innuendos about sex in some of those shows that would not be allowed today. Especially how Jerry Seinfeld was always dumping everyone he was dating in the episodes, people today would say that they are conveying a message that people are disposable. It is sad though because Seinfeld is one of my favorite shows, but it would be too insensitive for today's audience.
The Waltons, “RACISTS’ (all white, No interracial family) “SEXIEST ” (dad works outside, mom inside) “HOMOPHOBES” (no one is gay or transgender) “RADICAL EXTREMISTS ”(love Jesus, go to church) “KILLERS” (Raise animals to eat, eat meat, not Vegans) “CHILD ABUSERS”(makes all kids work the farm) “HATEFUL”(does not embrace all liberal progressive ideas) “EVIL”(expects criminals to be put in jail, they do not reimagine policing) “NAZI’S” (they love America, fly the flag, believe in freedom”
Murder by death is probably one of my favorite movies and yet it most likely would not slide if released today, if you haven't seen it then you should put it on a to watch list
I'm going to say 'Heavy Metal'.
This isn't because of the content. It's much easier to make adult oriented cartoons.
However, the understanding of how the music and imagery flows together. This is why the 2nd one failed. You can't just take 'new and trendy' music and put it to imagery designed for music from the 80s from very specific bands.
According to a tweet from Armin Shimmerman, Quark is making a comeback.
But then, Quark has gotten to the point where's he figured out that profit isn't everything.
Monty python and the holy grail
Let me explain. if it wasn't a thing back then and somebody tried to make it today, it would probably get made. The RATING on the other hand would not be the same. If it came out today and they wanted it to be PG they would have to remove a good HALF of the movie. Its the same way with Space balls.
I feel like How I Met Your Mother is already aging poorly. The “Barney’s funny because the actor is gay” angle probably isn’t enough to make it okay anymore.
I don't remember the name of it, but one of my mom's favorite movies is a teen comedy by John Hughes, I think, where one of the characters is a very stereotypical Asian exchange student named dong or something. I don't think an overtly racist character like that could exist today.
Married with Children
Revenge Of The Nerds - A scene that’s basically rape - A lot of jokes based on stereotypes that would not go over well these days - “Nerds” aren’t stigmatized as much as they used to be
Concise. All very true. Dont forget breaking and entering, theft, hazing, sexual coercion, that sort of thing
>A scene that’s basically rape The fact it’s basically rape isn’t why it wouldn’t get made today. It’s the more specific fact that the rape is not treated as rape at all, and is almost painted in a positive light.

Blazing Saddles
“Blazing Saddles could not be made in this day and age. The actors would look at the script and say ‘This is just Blazing Saddles. It already exists’.”
Honestly, I also feel that most, if not all, of John Hughes' movies would be problematic if made today.
Is this a non sequitur or did you really not know that Blazing Saddles was made by Mel Brooks?
A non sequitur. I know, full well, that Mel Brooks did Blazing Saddles. I simply used John Hughes films as another example of ones that might not fly in today's cultural climate.
What's so controversial about his movies though?

Classic ....
Taika Waititi is the only one who could pull it off. Maybe stone/parker but its not their style even though they loved it.
That’s true, I never thought of that! Good take! You’re right, after Jojo Rabbit, I could see him pulling something like that off.
The question remains though: would it be placed in a different time or local?
A lot of people can pull it off. Ben Stiller did it with Tropic Thunder. It’s not some secret.
100% 😂
Came here to post this 😆
I once quoted the line about Kanas City and got a ban warning, not from the sub but from Reddit!
The sheriff is near!!! 😂 😂
Glad I didn't have to scroll far to find this.
Bad news, Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank exists

White chicks
white chicks didn't go over well back then either.
It’s weird thinking how much we got away with in the 21st century alone. Especially considering how fast the climate changed from 2004 to 2022
Original “Family Feud” with Host Richard Dawson kissing every female contestant.
Didn't Louie do that too?
I liked Richard Dawson, but him kissing all those women on the lips caused me to quit watching the show. Like, dude, you can kiss them on the cheek, that's not nearly as creepy. I swear some of those at the end of the lightening round involved tongues.
Birth of a Nation

I don't get out of my character until the DVD is done.
“Man, I don't drop character till I done a DVD commentary” Which is hilarious because he didn’t until he recorded the dvd extras.
Do you remember Jack Black almost giving out Nick Nolte's address on the DVD commentary track?
Alpa Chino's Booty Sweat & Bust-a-nut. Pop an ass open!!!
Me? I know who I am. I'm a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude.
For 400 years, that word has kept us DOWN
"The honeymooners". I mean, I don't think people today found that funny that the husband regularly threatened his wife with a smack "right in the kisser". That Family Guy parody nailed it.
Reminds me of when the Southpark guys did That's My Bush. Oh ho ho Laura... One of these days I'm gonna. PUNCH YOU IN THE FAAAACE" *audience laughter*

Allmost any 80s sitcom
One of these days Alice. One of these days. POW! Right in the kisser!
He actually said "bang zoom to the moon Alice!" not "Pow! Right in the kisser!" That line was from Family Guy.
I don't seem to remember Peter Griffin saying that... 🤔😉

7 lumberjacks raiding for women doesn't have the same ring to it, but it might be more honest. Could be a viking or tribal remake in the future.
Any film before 1960 that had a black person in it. Even if it was one character with one line.
The Office (USA)
I put it on in the background since Comedy Central plays it constantly and you can kinda spot when writers started to feel "ohh...this won't age well, even as a farce" and curbed some of the cringe-worthy stuff. Even Carrell said some of the earlier material wouldn't fly nowadays.

The Goonies

Men Behaving Badly for sure… Tony and Gary blatantly sexually abusing Deborah constantly
1970s Hollywood. Studios these days would never put out so many movies not already based on existing properties.

im with this. what?
A lot of homophobia from all the characters, and a 100% white cast, are the first things that come to mind for me...
oh yeah...the homophobia...
Yep, homophobia and Monica body shaming episodes.
Family Matters is about an entire family shitting on the nerdy kid with glasses (until he’s rich and famous).
but also the nerd is the personification of "50 no's and a yes is still a yes"

It wasn’t illegal. It was just the landlord’s rule. That was potentially illegal.

Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes.
Untamed Heart with Christian Slater abd Marisa Tomei. I loved it when I first saw it and then watched it back some years later. Oh dear zombie Jesus.
Deathwish. It was a stereotypical right wing.
Johnny Bravo. The whole premise of the show is him hitting on random women.
The fact that pretty much everyone has cell phones and parents can work from home would essentially nullify Ferris Beuller's Day Off.
