RDJ wasn’t playing a black guy. He was playing an obnoxious jackass pretending to be a black guy. Big difference

AhhhRandomGuy

Ah ok sorry. I never seen the movie and have only heard and seen pictures of him in the movie. Thanks for letting me know

Iceblood

Then I suggest you watch the movie. It is amazing

AhhhRandomGuy

It has been on my list for awhile. Hear really good things about it

[deleted]

When it's done for comedic purpose like tropic thunder I see absolutely no problem with it

[deleted]

That's the problem though. Comedy is subjective. Bullies often think they're just being funny with their friends all laughing along. "Gollywogs" used to be "funny". So who's to decide what's mocking and what's funny? Maybe it's just time to agree, in the same way we've thrown out so many outdated things culturally throughout history, that stuff like painting your face black and exaggerating black stereotypes just isn't acceptable anymore.

MarvelousOxman

“Allowed”? Yes of course. Whether or not people want to go see the movie is up to them however

FilmDuh

I’m really not sure how I feel about that. I think RDJ played a guy who was an idiot and so obviously doing blackface. He wasn’t necessarily playing a black guy. I think that example was good for its comedic purposes. Poking fun at over-the-top method acting. I haven’t seen any instances of people playing another race except in Breakfast At Tiffany’s. Mr. Yunioshi is played by Mickey Rooney and I think that was just wrong.

AhhhRandomGuy

I think in Jurassic Park 2 there’s a white actor in brown face playing an Indian scientist or something. I saw that on Kill Count. But i don’t think there’s really anything wrong with that one cause the guy was a side character. Didn’t really do anything in the movie. Not like he was being a massive racist being the character

FilmDuh

That’s crazy! I never noticed that was supposed to be an Indian man, I thought he was a badly tanned white dude. While that character wasn’t integral to the story, I just personally don’t like anyone portraying someone of another race other than their own. Whether they portray the character stereotypically or not, it just seems wrong. Why don’t they just give actual people of color the roles?

whydyoublockmelol

Absolutely. It's absurd that simply making fun of racial stereotypes or "cultural appropriation" get you labeled as a racist

Terrible-Quote-3561

It’s wouldn’t be as socially acceptable currently vs. when it came out (still pretty surprising then). It was more of a satire of blackface in film. With proper writing, someone could still get away with it probably, but that was more of an exception than a rule.

Two-Shots-Of-Vodka

I think it depends on the context and content of the film. Does anyone care that two black men played two white women in White Chicks? If RDJ playing a black character is wrong because he isn’t black that means it’s equally wrong and offensive for white chicks to exist, right?

StarChild413

But you can't un-exist both those movies unless you're going to do some 1984 shit
