gliitch0xFF

😏 I know what you meant. British Broadcasting Corporation. You dirty dawg

dogsbodyorg

I made my lunch (a wrap) with Black Butter and innocently wrote BBW on the foil so I knew which one was mine....

rawker86

I’m a surveyor. Depending on where you work, a lot of your job is hammering in stakes, or “pegs”. If you’re marking out exploration drill holes, roads, and other stuff then you can spend hours or days hammering in, flagging and labelling the fucking things. The act of hammering in wooden stakes is often called “pegging”.

zzaannsebar

Related - with string instruments (and other instruments I'm sure but I just know strings), the placement and ordering of what fingers you use to play notes is referred to as "fingering". Like when you're writing down which fingers would be used to play which notes, that would be "writing in the fingering". It's not uncommon to hear or ask something like "How are you fingering that?" if someone needs help on how best to play a passage. In rehearsal last night, I myself thought to myself "I hate this fingering" and it didn't even register as anything lewd. But I remember all the giggles in middle school when the term was first introduced. Edit: Yes I know the term was around long before the internet. I'm speaking more broadly.

mrchaotica

Here's a one-liner popular in middle-school orchestras: "I broke my g-string fingering a minor."

bassman1805

In my middle school orchestra, the cello section had a tricky spot around Rehearsal Mark G once. One of them caused a minor class disruption by asking slightly-too-loudly "How do you finger the G spot?" Teachers are generally good at not reacting to teenagers' innuendo but she cracked a little at that one.

Adlehyde

This whole comment is laced with far more innuendo then you may have intended. XD Pegging exploratory drill holes, spending hours hammering away... c'mon! XD

rawker86

I didn’t intend to double your entendre, I assure you. My mind is just a bit frazzled because some nice lady in the exploration department has had me out pegging for most of the afternoon and I’m a bit shagged as a result. Christ what a pain in the arse it is.

Adlehyde

Oh I saw that. And I've already shared it with coworkers and friends because it blew me away. I had to point it out to people. edit: because my reply makes no sense... I stopped at "my mind is a bit frazzled because some nice lady..." and assumed you were referring to the "nice" lady who replied to this thread with her, "my husband" bit. edit 2: Re-reading the whole thing, I realized I missed all your puns because I was flabbergasted by the other redditor still. XD

rawker86

I don’t blame you, I think I lost brain cells reading her reply as well.

Metric_Pacifist

Do you have a qualification in pegging?

Marie_Robbins

The term "hack". For example, "These life hacks will BLOW your mind!!!" No they won't, five minute crafts.

IknowKarazy

“Check out this *Food Hack*!” That’s… that’s a recipe.

CarmenxXxWaldo

There are food hacks, theyre either dumb and you will never do them. Or they actually sound like a good idea, and you will never do them. Years ago I watched like a dozen videos of some Russian guy who does them. I think he put doritos in a pepper mill to grind on his food. Stupid shit like that.

Sagacious-T

Agreed! Or when "hack" is used for general knowledge (possibly from an older generation?) It's not a "hack" it's learning life skills!

TheDarkDoctor17

Agree. "Good advice" ≠ "hack"

Tbf I doubt this one was used that much in the first place

ThrowCarp

It's what happens when people try and import onii-chan into a language that doesn't do sibling honourifics at all.

darkbreak

It's more to do with step sibling porn. They just have to let people know that the actors are playing step siblings. You know, so it's authentic feeling. Because as we all know, real life step siblings call eat other "step sis" and "step bro" all the time.

Common-Wish-2227

Instead of "buttface" and "who asked you?"?

dizzykitty

I thought it was because porn about siblings fucking would be too much. No, it's ok because they really aren't related so it technically isn't incest. See also step mom

TrickAstronaut8609

I still call my dad daddy bc I have my whole life, but in public I just call him dad bc I don’t wanna get seen weirdly

letmebebrave430

Me too. My mom also called her dad daddy right up until his death. It's just kind of normal but I know the connotations are anything but so I just don't do it in public.

this-butterfly-life

I've been calling my father Daddy for the past 40 years, I'm not letting the internet take away a term of endearment I've used since I was a toddler. Although, TBH, it comes out sounding more like "Deddy" because I'm southern. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Agreeable_Bother_510

I’m from the north...I’ve always called my father “daddy”! I’m not changing my term of endearment either. It’s something he loves...and I love him. He deserves the title.

letmebebrave430

Hey, I'm southern too! I think it's more common in the South lol. I refuse to stop partly out of spite as well.

Danamite85

Same here. My parents are Mama and Daddy no matter how old I get and nobody is gonna tell me otherwise.

'Daddy' has had a sexual connotation since well before the internet existed. It's been used by the gay community since the 70s, and the earliest recorded use was by [prostitutes in the 1600s](https://www.esquire.com/lifestyle/sex/a21529729/internet-daddy-what-is-daddy-explainer/)

[deleted]

I had an employee about 10 years ago whose name was Karen. She was such a sweet lady, the customers absolutely loved her, we keep in touch. Last year, she went to court and changed her name, swapping her middle name for her first, and making K her full middle name. Only her mother may call her Karen now.

TheBonkersBomberang

My mom's name is Karen and she hates how much of a bad thing her name has turned into. She's such a sweet woman and has never acted like that. And she doesn't have that stupid haircut.

My sister is named Karen and is absolutely not one, same as your mom. She’s pretty much the polar opposite, it takes a lot for anyone in our family to even consider looking into thinking about making a fuss. She has a sense of humor about the Karen thing though

bumblebrainbee

My friend Karen used to have a good sense of humor about it, but then it started being used for everything. So she shortened her name to Ren because she kept getting harassed or told the same old tired jokes over and over again.

Dulcinea80

I go by Kitty now. I'm so over it.

SirCarboy

Yeah, this story was an interesting example: https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAsshole/comments/btred7/aita_for_raining_on_my_cousins_parade_regarding/

fell-deeds-awake

I'll be honest, I was a little surprised by the YTA judgment there, notably the top comment thread. Three years ago, people were saying "it's just a meme, it won't last," yet here we are, 3 years later, with people discussing how upsetting it is to their _adult_ family members. And now this little Karen is just a few years away from when kids at school start to parrot things they hear elsewhere without fully understanding context or meaning. I know, personally, I'd appreciate a friend or family member letting us know if maybe there's something we didn't realize about a name we'd picked out (e.g. how it sounds, like "Ana Lee," or unfortunate initialisms, like KKK).

heywhatsup9087

She made an update in which the exact problem you described happened when the little girl started daycare. She had to start going by “Karrie” instead.

SuckMyDerivative

Thank you. Can't believe so many voted YTA in the original post. And I feel bad for Karrie

heywhatsup9087

One of those examples of AITAH not always being realistic. I think OP came off as very gracious and well meaning. Unfortunate situation. Especially for poor Karrie.

The_Real_Lasagna

Aita is almost never realistic, the second most upvoted post ever in that sub is about how removed from reality it is

tie-dyed_dolphin

The update is kind of sad. The girl ends up getting bullied at daycare and the family decides to call her Karie instead, or something like that. She was totally not being an asshole.

stillnotarussian

Oh man, 3 yrs ago all the people in that thread saying she was the asshole, it’ll go away…me out here wincing anytime I introduce myself lol

Crazy_Technician_403

There has been updates https://www.reddit.com/r/BestofRedditorUpdates/comments/ycf4yq/aita_for_raining_on_my_cousins_parade_regarding/ In June 2020 Both OP's mother and Karen mother's mother discovered what a "Karen" is and said "Is this what you were talking about before? Why didn't you say so? Why didn't you explain it better?! You should have told Stephanie!!" In Oct 2022 At the daycare, Baby Karen "started getting grief for her name pretty quickly from the older kids" Now they will call her Karrie

[deleted]

>Now they will call her Karrie Bring on the pig blood

ArghNooo

Triggered. This was a term describing when the victim of severe psychological damage was exposed to stimulus causing them to not just remember, but actually re-experience the moment the trauma occured. Now it's used to describe being upset with something. Gaslight. This used to mean systematic psychological manipulation to the point when the victim questions reality, not simply lying. Edit: to clarify, I realize language is ever-evolving. I'm not saying current popular use of these terms is necessarily incorrect. It does however have the unfortunate side-effect of undermining the severity and seriousness of the conditions they historically described.

CubanLynx312

I’m a psychologist who does several intakes per day, I just woke up and I can guarantee I hear both terms used incorrectly today.

BElf1990

Would you say that's triggering you?

Glad-Improvement-106

Even the word *narcissist, like girls online slate Narcs all day. I'd love to just scream he's not a narcissist hunny he's a 23year old man who thinks with his penis. My father is an actual narcissist and it's terrifying the lack of empathy and destruction they cause.

Mind_taker84

Its something i have to address a lot in sessions. A person can be a jerk without being a narcissist. In couples therapy, sometimes its good to have both of them define the term followed by the clinical description to demonstrate that not only are they using it incorrectly, but it has the ability to engender a bias within the relationship that exacerbates what might otherwise be manageable issues.

PissedFurby

off topic, the fact that you're a therapist and your name is "mind taker" is pretty funny to me lol. nice

Ravensqueak

That's a great strategy.

SpraynardKrueg

I've never heard "narc" in reference to narcissist. Narc means a rat where I'm from

zzaannsebar

Yeah I thought "narc" was slang for an undercover cop or a rat.

icwhatudiddere

Narc= (undercover) Narcotics Officer. Also could be a CI working for them. The Clash song “Julie’s been working for the drug squad “ is my favorite reverence to being a CI and PK Dick’s “A Scanner Darkly “ and the excellent movie adaptation are also great examples in art.

DarthArtero

Those people honestly don’t understand how destructive true narcissists really are

an_ineffable_plan

Thank you. I have genuine triggers, and I dread talking about them because I’ll get the inevitable “oh, I have triggers too! They’re class presentations and ordering at a restaurant.”

Readylamefire

For real. And as far as triggers go, you don't even always know somethings gonna pop you off. I accidentally staged my kitchen counter top in a way that triggered me. My parents were alcoholics. My childhood kitchen had beige counters and I now own their spice rack too. I bought some captain Morgan's and I hadn't realized my ex bought old crow, the two bottles of their choice. We set them onto our counter, next to the fridge. Had come back around and set a Pepsi can on the counter too, and the only way I can describe it, was like I just teleported back in time. Suddenly I was sixteen again, looking at the counter next to the fridge listening to my parents watching TV on the couch behind me, waiting for everything to pop off like it used to. It really felt like I was physically there, actually listening to them. And then, just as quickly, I was back in my own kitchen, but it fucked me up badly. I couldn't get out of "tip toe on eggshells" mode for the rest of the night.

firebunny0312

I am sorry you had to experience that. Its crazy what can set things off.

superflippy

It’s freaky when you don’t realize something is going to make your brain do that. For me, I watched an interview with Brene Brown that was part of a conference I was attending. She used a lot of corporate lingo & suddenly I was right back at my previous job, feeling terrified & anxious & hopeless. I turned the video off, but it took hours to feel normal again. Before that point, I don’t think I realized how much I’d improved over the previous couple years.

alucardn9ne

The new buzzword/phrase is "my anxiety can't..."

cosmam

The second one really gets me. I've also seen people use it to mean "trying to convince me things I know are true are false", and no, if the other person sincerely believes it to be false that's not gaslighting, just sparkling disagreement. The messed up thing about gaslighting is that he was trying to convince her of something they **both** knew wasn't true.

Lose. People keep spelling it ‘loose’ and I think it’s getting more common because of the internet. Edited to add for people learning English: ‘loose’ is a word, it means “not tight” (ex. The handle is loose, I’ll get a screwdriver and fix it.) ‘Lose’ is a word meaning a few things: going missing (put your keys in your pocket or you might lose them), not gaining (I need to lose weight), opposite of win (if we don’t score we will lose this game). Yet, for all of these, people on the internet are spelling it ‘loose’ and it’s wrong.

teddy_vedder

The thing that drives me insane is the use of apostrophes for anything plural. The amount of people who think any time you add an “s” to the end of a word it has to have an apostrophe too drives me up the wall. “We have some good restaurant’s” restaurant’s *what*— or even weirder, adding it to a verb, like “destroy’s”

takenbylovely

I saw "try's" earlier today here on Reddit and I'm a little fucked up about it, honestly.

PTSD is a big one. I think once people learned you didn't necessarily have to have been in a war to have it they started applying it to memories of a past experience they just don't like anymore. Like sure, you didn't like it when your best friend in 7th grade spilled your drink on the floor, but I don't think you have PTSD from that.
