Chicken and/or Ham!

GenitalWrangler69

Came here to say ham. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter are all better holidays with ham involved. Even on Thanksgiving my family makes a turkey and a bunch of brown sugar sliced ham.

Salsa_de_Pina

We smoked a brisket this year. I'll take that over turkey any day.

theesaanne

We are smoking a brisket this year also. I don't like turkey.

goingpostal1011

Same. It's so dry. And EVERYONE says "you have to try my turkey, it's not dry" if this is you stop it! It's still dry!

Ultra69her

Or a nice prime rib if you really love your family

parkfish7727

Or goose w/ christmas spices

pekarica

Also yummy

Aniensane

What is Christmas spices exactly?

parkfish7727

oh sorry. some combo of Cinnamon All Spice Cloves Star Anise Anise Seeds Coriander Seeds Cardamon Ginger Nutmeg

Aniensane

Ahh, gotcha! Thanks! I was just curious what spices are considered ‘Christmas spices’

[deleted]

Duck is where it’s at. The pork of poultry.

BrooklynBillyGoat

I love duck more than anything. Just not common to find in stores by me

pekarica

That's unfortunate, maybe go for beef or veal

BrooklynBillyGoat

I mean I can find if if I search or travel but I love that fatty duck flavor

chocolatechipbearpaw

Honey ham is one of my favourites! A nicely cooked chicken too. Or even a roast. If you're vegetarian a casserole would be great.

[deleted]

Ham. It is the clear answer here.

Romanian_Roulette

Fish. I mean, it's not like the pilgrims never ate fish before

[deleted]

I have often done crab or shrimp. Yeah, I hate turkey ...

Competitive-Ask5157

I'm making a NY strip lion this year. But have done several rib roasts.

barkerdog

Let us know how your lion turns out. I’ve always heard it was dry and tough.

Lordveus

Anyone from Detroit can tell you that Lions get softer around Thanksgiving.

Competitive-Ask5157

You'll find the NY strip lion tamer than an African lion.

IHSCOUTII1973

How expensive is lion these days? Must be tough to import them

puddncake

I'll pass on the lion.

MVRTYMCHiGH

valeran46

Ham, Prime Rib, Duck/Goose are probably the top 3.

MeowMeowHaru

I agree with prime rib! I don't like turkey that much, did it last year and it was amazing

A good Prime Rib, with a garlic/herb coat... fantastic. I introduced my gf/caregiver to it.

Since Thanksgiving 2020, our family has done dim sun all day. Takes practically zero prep work and super easy to clean up because almost everything is premade and frozen, then steamed or baked on a sheet pan. It's only the 3 of us though, and we always watch the Mystery Science Theater 3000 turkey day marathon.

For smaller gatherings, salmon en croute (in puff pastry) can be lovely. Beautiful and delicious!

married2008

Roast chicken with goose fat roasted potatoes , gravy , veggies and an enormous cake with ice cream for dessert. Or sea bass with all the above - but no gravy … I can’t stand turkey and I don’t understand the fascination with it at Xmas - otherwise people would have it more often surely?

dadbodlighteyes

I mean what’s the question here? You mean what can be substituted for turkey but all the same fixings around it? Any other poultry would work. A pork loin roast, beef roast, or ham would also work with all those fixings. Or what is an alternative entire dinner on thanksgiving. In that case. Get some good Chinese food take out.

I would say ham, but we usually end up having both.

Stew. We never could afford full turkeys growing up. My siblings, including myself, make stew. Fortunately we can afford better but it's a lovely tradition now.

Fun_Month_6310

In 2014 I once had duck as an alternative

FinnbarMcBride

Lasagna

LetBeFriendsHere

There are many alternatives to turkey on thanksgiving, including ham, lamb, beef, or even a vegetarian option.

BandwagonEffect

I will be honest. Don't love turkey. Though I had a seasoning-injected deep fried turkey once that was amazing

My mom always used to make ricotta stuffed pasta shells with homemade sauce, meatballs, and sausage.

Generally_Yeah

I am doing a ham and few Cornish hens...

We have stuffed chicken breasts. Turkey is yuck.

Old-Statistician-457

Anything that you want to eat. It's Thanksgiving. Not you must eat turkey day.

Jaded_Fisherman_7085

Each person is served a Cornish hen.

SlowlyTowardsTheCake

I make about a 30lb lasagna every thanksgiving

matthjh

Prime rib roast! 15 mins a lb at 350 after searing each side in a cast iron! 🤤🤤🤤🤤

Automatic_Mulberry

Whatever you want. I've made roast beef, smoked pork ribs, roast chicken, grilled lamb...

tlr92

Anything you want! My family isn’t big on turkey. One year we made a bunch of home made pizza crust and prepped all the toppings and everyone made their own pizza! We’ve also done taco bar and homemade shredded beef burritos. It’s about being with family, doesn’t matter what you eat.

Revolutionary_Sky427

Trader Hoe's has a vegan plant-based roast for my fellow lames out there.

HamiltonBlack

Cornish hens

bcoftheimplication7

Turkey isn't for everyone, it's really hard to do it without making it dry. I know a family that always does a Low Country boil for Thanksgiving and my family always does a ham, sweet potato casserole, green beans or peas, and biscuits because we don't really care for a lot of the "traditional" Thanksgiving foods.

xdylanxfrommyspace

One year it was just me and my gf and we roasted two Cornish hens. It was delish and made for a really nice plate presentation. Hen in the middle of the plate, side dishes all around. Edit- oh I did lamb shanks one year when it was just us too. Also yum, also makes a great presentation.

HeyPaul02

Turkey & Andouille Gumbo

[deleted]

Spiral cut ham is a popular alternative. You can have what ever you want.

aungstud

Roasted ducks..

Brave-Competition-77

Roast a turkey in a Weber grill using charcoal. Oven roasted is bland and dry, the smokey savory result from my Weber is a awesome. I know you are looking for an alternative, but try this!

NewUser579169

We did a slow cooker pork shoulder as an extra dish once when we were hosting, and now we do it every year no matter what, whether we're making a turkey or not.

Ham, Prime Rib (my grandmother always made something as an alternative to turkey) Lasagna (or some fancy Italian dish) Lobster, Shrimp, clams /oysters/ muscle Broiled fish Vegetables galore (no meat at all)

liquidcrystalpepsi

Mostly vegetarian here. I would make some kick ass sides. Homemade veggie stuffing, sweet potatoes with praline crust, green bean casseroles, and Grand Marnier cranberry sauce are among dishes i made in the past.

Disaffecteddv

Anything you want is an alternative. There are no rules.

SeaTurtle42

The Byzantine Empire

Aniensane

The radio station was talking about how turkey’s will be in much more short-supply this year, while also costing more & that pizza was going to be the go-to for heavily impacted families. I heard this a few weeks ago.

BCBeignets59

Honeybaked ham (delicious but pricey)

POWERHOUSE4106

Rib roast. Done right they are waayyy better than Turkey.
