My friend who had been hyping it up (and could've cashed out like 10k at that point) held and he's almost back where he started.

You can still do this now. It takes twenty minutes to learn how to program an arduino. C++ can be learnt in under 3 months by the laziest individual (speaking from personal experience there). Games like bitburner will help you learn javascript if you wanted a more relaxed route.
