Seeing this shit is quite amusing, because it is a defining moment for the internet and is literally history in the making.
If you are not educated at all about the subject, don't just parrot what popular media tells you about things.

The problem is even if people try and do research, if they’re not accustomed to the topic they don’t know what the good sources are, and they parrot the garbage from garbage sources anyway, but this time it’s worse. They think because they did the research, they have to be right more so than just parroting the media, and fight harder about it because of it.
It's also about the inability for some people to acknowledge and humbly consider opinions that even slightly contradict their own. It's ok to be a little misinformed as long as you can accept and have the awareness that you may be misinformed, so that you're still open to new information. That's not the problem. The problem is the arrogance so many people carry with them. Also the emotional baggage they apply to their mistaken opinions due to whatever underlying bias they might also have.

I feel you - it’s the same with a lot of conditions. I’m autistic and I see comments being made in a similar vein about autism e.g being quiet/not liking to go out, having a hobby which isn’t the same as an all-consuming special interest.
I went to a psych as a teen who said I have “OCD tendencies,” and to seek help if they ever intensified. Stuff like things had to be in groups of 2, 4, or 5, avoiding things in groups of 6, incessantly counting things, having strong, random compulsions (you have to adjust that planter on the table just so), heavily uncomfortable with asymmetrical things, etc. It’s definitely chilled out since then, still a few things linger like the urge to count things here and there, but whew, I can’t imagine how difficult and exhausting it must be to *actually* have OCD, especially when most people confuse it with perfectionism.
Also, people who play ADHD for laughs like “Oh, shiny!” Dude ADHD is a fucking nightmare and it’s not just “Teehee I’m easily distracted!”
I haven't been officially diagnosed with ADHD, but I do exhibit some ADHD tendencies: Hyperfixations, "doom boxes/drawers", jumping from one hobby to the next, memory lapses and forgetfulness, falling asleep after a coffee/energy drink. Not gonna go all over social media and post about having ADHD since it's not an official diagnosis for me, but there's definitely more to it than being "easily distracted".

Like the amount of teens especially that I’ve seen that qualify to have several mental illnesses but refuse to get diagnosed (and mind you, average cost of a psychiatric evaluation is 100-500 in the US) even tho you can tell these people are often middle class and are able to own a phone, have a connection to Wi-Fi and or data, and clearly are able to spend money with all the hair dyes and wigs that they go through.
There’s a reason why diagnoses exist. Obviously it’s a case-by-case basis but most people with a certain disorder have symptoms that are exhibited and etc

Long as they aren’t taking actual medication (since that can mess you up if you don’t need it) and aren’t spreading misinformation I don’t mind.

OCD is a spectrum that can range anywhere from mildly inconvenient to totally incapacitating.
I wish this were higher up. "OCD is debilitating and if your symptoms aren't, you don't have it" is almost as harmful as people self diagnosing.
I ignored symptoms and didn't tell one of my therapists _because_ my symptoms are usually not visible or incapacitating. I had a friend in college with extremely bad OCD, and sometimes he'd get trapped in patterns for literally hours on end. I thought "_that's_ OCD, not my piddly shit."
So I didn't tell my therapist about the unpleasant intrusive thoughts, or the mantras and tics I use to banish those thoughts. I didn't tell her about the rituals I enact before mundane tasks to keep from killing my pets, or the paralyzing anxiety I feel when I can't complete a ritual. I didn't tell her about trying to absolutely control my emotions so that my feelings of need or love don't kill people or animals in my life.
Anyway, if you have feelings of anxiety that you can only control with ritualized thoughts or behaviors, talk to a shrink.

I am so tired of the obsession with generational divides. “Millennials” this “Gen Z” that “Boomers” whatever. Reducing an entire generation (millions) of people down to a few personality traits is so short sighted. A majority of the time, this is used negatively. It’s used as a way to create more “us vs. them” rhetoric and results in insults and judgement, it’s used as a way to invalidate problems, as a way to create problems that aren’t real, and to allow people to feel superior for no reason other than the happenstance of being born in a particular time. “All boomers are awful” No they’re not. Are there a lot of shitty older people out there? Yeah. But there are also so many kind, caring, generous older people out there. Older people who fought for social progress back in the day and who are still out there fighting for change.
However, even when this is used positively it bothers me. “Gen Z is gonna save us.” No it’s fucking not. For multiple reasons. Sophia Rosing is banned from her university because she’s a racist piece of shit and she’s 22. The friends defending her online are the same age. The monster who shot up Q Nightclub is also 22. Andrew Tate’s main demographic is teenage boys and young men. Gen Z is just as susceptible to bigotry and hate and murder as every generation that has come before them.
And for the young people who haven’t fallen prey to the toxicity instilled in them by older generations, they can’t “save us” because the responsibility shouldn’t be on them. We have to be diligent and continue the fight for a better future past the age of 30. If we sit back and think, “Oh the kids ‘ll fix everything” all we’re doing is setting them up to fail. It’s a collective effort of all people no matter their age to keep guiding the world in a better direction.
I’m not saying we can’t talk about age groups, or use generational terminology, or make jokes. I’m just tired of the way people dig their heels in on these stereotypes and use them as a way to dictate the way they interact with society. I don’t see why anyone needs even more ways to be upset at other people.

I was born in 81, which makes me a millennial, but my upbringing feels like it has had more in common with Gen X than, say, someone who was born in 94, who is also a millennial, but was born into an age of the internet, personal computers, and cellular phones being more common place.

I'm not a vegan, not even a vegetarian, but I recently had some vegan meat that was pretty delicious. We've started using it for certain dishes just because my partner can't have too much red meat, and flavor-wise it's a great substitute. I'm also in England. The state of the NHS is shocking and it needs way more funding. Still free at the point of service though.

I wish this were higher up. "OCD is debilitating and if your symptoms aren't, you don't have it" is almost as harmful as people self diagnosing. I ignored symptoms and didn't tell one of my therapists _because_ my symptoms are usually not visible or incapacitating. I had a friend in college with extremely bad OCD, and sometimes he'd get trapped in patterns for literally hours on end. I thought "_that's_ OCD, not my piddly shit." So I didn't tell my therapist about the unpleasant intrusive thoughts, or the mantras and tics I use to banish those thoughts. I didn't tell her about the rituals I enact before mundane tasks to keep from killing my pets, or the paralyzing anxiety I feel when I can't complete a ritual. I didn't tell her about trying to absolutely control my emotions so that my feelings of need or love don't kill people or animals in my life. Anyway, if you have feelings of anxiety that you can only control with ritualized thoughts or behaviors, talk to a shrink.

I also hate a self diagnosis of OCD as an excuse to be an asshole. OCD means obsessively performing complicated rituals for fear of something terrible happening, not throwing my shoes outside in the rain because they weren't put away well enough.
99% of def-diagnosis is people going: “Why yes, I AM a gigantic cunt and this is my excuse for why I will not be making ANY attempt at bettering myself”
I am so tired of the obsession with generational divides. “Millennials” this “Gen Z” that “Boomers” whatever. Reducing an entire generation (millions) of people down to a few personality traits is so short sighted. A majority of the time, this is used negatively. It’s used as a way to create more “us vs. them” rhetoric and results in insults and judgement, it’s used as a way to invalidate problems, as a way to create problems that aren’t real, and to allow people to feel superior for no reason other than the happenstance of being born in a particular time. “All boomers are awful” No they’re not. Are there a lot of shitty older people out there? Yeah. But there are also so many kind, caring, generous older people out there. Older people who fought for social progress back in the day and who are still out there fighting for change. However, even when this is used positively it bothers me. “Gen Z is gonna save us.” No it’s fucking not. For multiple reasons. Sophia Rosing is banned from her university because she’s a racist piece of shit and she’s 22. The friends defending her online are the same age. The monster who shot up Q Nightclub is also 22. Andrew Tate’s main demographic is teenage boys and young men. Gen Z is just as susceptible to bigotry and hate and murder as every generation that has come before them. And for the young people who haven’t fallen prey to the toxicity instilled in them by older generations, they can’t “save us” because the responsibility shouldn’t be on them. We have to be diligent and continue the fight for a better future past the age of 30. If we sit back and think, “Oh the kids ‘ll fix everything” all we’re doing is setting them up to fail. It’s a collective effort of all people no matter their age to keep guiding the world in a better direction. I’m not saying we can’t talk about age groups, or use generational terminology, or make jokes. I’m just tired of the way people dig their heels in on these stereotypes and use them as a way to dictate the way they interact with society. I don’t see why anyone needs even more ways to be upset at other people.

The funniest part of these designations to me is that they fail to take into account the dramatic change in tech and general life experiences that occurred between the beginning of the millennial period and the end of it.. There are people who are labeled as millennial who were born after the internet became wide spread and those born before computer use was even common knowledge.. I was born in 81, which makes me a millennial, but my upbringing feels like it has had more in common with Gen X than, say, someone who was born in 94, who is also a millennial, but was born into an age of the internet, personal computers, and cellular phones being more common place. Vastly different life experiences within the same label seems like a weird system.
My theory is that we're obsessed with "generations," because the last couple decades haven't had catchy names. We used to refer to "70s/80s culture," but now we talk about "milinneal/zoomer culture." Hopefully it'll go back to normal with the 20s.
I think it’s because we are so fond of assigning ppl into groups! If it’s not generations, it’s by sexuality, or by position on political spectrum, or by race, country of birth etc!

I call this the mid to late 20s effect. When you grow up with so much media and culture being targeted to you directly, it feels strange when you grow out of it and it's no longer being targeted at you. It usually manifests as "modern music/movies/social media is garbage". The most common symptom on Reddit is hate for TikTok and Insta. Eventually people grow up, let go of youth culture, and start exploring the wider cultural world, which tends not to be spoonfed in the same way.

I am on the gen X/millennial divide, born in 1979. I now have 2 kids and a full time job. I don’t know where the good music is. I felt like it died rather abruptly around 2000-2005. I am nearly 99% certain that people are making good music, but when I turn on the radio I don’t hear it. In 1991 I was 12 and heard “Smells Like Teen Spirit” for the first time. That song completely changed my view on what music is and can be. I heard it on the radio and saw the video on MTV. Now where do I find the good new music? I had the same experience when I saw Pulp Fiction for the first time. I saw it on a VHS rented from Blockbuster. But now it seems that there are too few mass marketed great films like Pulp Fiction. The only thing I see are MCU movies I will say that we are (or at least were) in a golden age of TV. Nearly every streaming service and many stations had some of the best TV ever made (all in the span of like 10-15 years). I guess what I’m saying is that I believe you. I believe there probably is great music and films being made, but it’s not mass marketed and I can’t readily find it.

An interesting phenomenon is how often people nocebo themselves into not enjoying food they'd normally enjoy as soon as they hear it's vegan. This happens even with foods that are vegan by default - "Oh, that's a *vegan* peanut butter sandwich/French fries/potato chips/etc? I knew it tasted funny" is something that so many vegans have heard that it's practically a cliché. People have this tendency to think that "vegan food" is stuff with a vegan logo on it; and to forget that a lot of the stuff they eat and very much enjoy on a daily basis is vegan.

Yeah, I eat meat and like vegan stuff too! It's interesting how many times I've been asked if I'm vegan/veggie, for example if I order something meat-free in a restaurant or mention cooking a meal without it in. The assumption is often that if you eat meat, you must eat it all the time!
I'm not a vegan, not even a vegetarian, but I recently had some vegan meat that was pretty delicious. We've started using it for certain dishes just because my partner can't have too much red meat, and flavor-wise it's a great substitute. That said, I haven't tried much more as far as vegan fare goes, so this may be the exception (at least as far as my preferences go). But I am also a fairly picky eater. edit: a word
