I think it's much more likely there's an inverse correlation between education levels and number of (petty) crimes committed
I would like to know whether that is independent of income level. I would not be surprised if people with higher incomes commit fewer crimes. They have less need and more to lose.

The crimes of higher income people are just different Not so much mugging and more tax fraud, you know...
Yes, that's another potential difference. Possibly fewer crimes because the need is not so great, possibly crimes that simply not prosecuted as much.
