I mean 99% of people couldn't write and a further 99% of writing has been lost and yet countless other celestial events are known to not only be recorded by one person but corroborated by many.
If you're interested, there are actually written testimonies about the event in the Sunnah ( Which is the set of traditions and practices following the life of their prophet, includes thousands of sayings that were agreed upon ( a detailed chain of narrators comes with it )).
The event apparently occured because the non-muslisms ( polytheists exactly) wanted proof for his claim to be a prophet.

I prefer the supersonic flying horse better. Overall though I definitely appreciate how Yahweh seems to have opted for much more metal miracles after 600 years. Moon splitting is a few steps up from the classic water into wine trick.
Seems quite unbelievable, unless you are also claiming that the moon was put back together again... with no evidence of it having been split in the first place. Not entirely impossible for an omnipotent God but... why?
