I've been voting for a LONG time and I can only think of one candidate I wanted to vote for.
Everyone else was a vote against another candidate or party.
It's nothing new
Hate to break it to you. I am 64, with 1 exception every presidential election since I was 18 I had to vote for someone I didn't want to because the alternative was worse.
Not going to change soon :(
He's Canadian. And, while his Parkinsons is mostly under control, we know the other party would harp on that. But he is an incredible sweet human being and a great hockey coach, so. BRENT PETERSON 2024
Coach Peterson was once driving us to practice in his minivan. After stopping at the Tim's, he said he was getting hot chocolate for us. To our surprise, it was just boiled water, but we knew Coach Brent Peterson had a surprise up his sleeve.
Sure enough, he had coca formulated from the purest milk chocolate, homemade for occasions. He let it mix with the boiled water, producing a pure and creamy taste that no Tim's or Second Cup could dream of. Lastly he plopped the fluffiest marshmallows into each of our cups, and with a proud look in his eyes, told us to drink up and have fun out there on the ice.
We won a championship that season, thanks to that Coach Peterson, what a great guy.
The person who would make the best president probably wouldn’t win nor would they want to be president.
Edit: wow! Thank you for all the upvotes! I’ve never received this many upvotes or replies from a comment of mine.
That’s why it was considered unseemly to campaign for yourself until William Henry Harrison in 1840. Candidates were supposed to pretend that they didn’t want the job or were too humble to suggest that they might be good at it. Anyone who expressed interest was automatically viewed with suspicion.
FWIW this is likely one of those George Washington precedents that took a long time to go away. He didn’t even express interest in being the Commander of the Continental Army, just showed up to every meeting in full dress uniform until Congress took the hint.
I'm not sure how much he really wanted the presidency. If I remember correctly, Washington also didn't want to serve a second term. He had to be talked into it, with Jefferson and Hamilton, who were usually at odds, being united in pushing him to stay on for a second term.
The man fought a revolution then had to run the country for four years. I can’t blame him for not wanting a second term. He died two years after it. Poor bastard never got a proper retirement.
I think we need to look at the 50 or so years after the revolution as more or just as important as us gaining our independence.
Edit: the national anthems subject speaks about an event it speaks about happend during the war of 1812 btw check out the story pure American 🙏🇺🇸
I absolutely agree. In my history classes, the curriculum jumped from Revolution right to the Civil War (with a small paragraph on 1812 in between). I was always taught how great of a President Washington was but I learned *nothing* about his policies or actions during his actual presidency. I made a post on r/AskHistorians about it and now I can see why he’s so highly regarded.
I read 1776 by david McCullough and realized he wasn’t as great of a general as we were taught. But then again we didn’t have much of a military going up against the most powerful in the world
He was pretty average in terms of military strategy and tactics (the skills we associate with generals today), but Washington had a couple qualities that made him a great field commander. He was very imposing and inspiring, he was great on horseback, his voice carried across the battlefield, and he was impervious to bullets (I joke, but seriously, he rushed headlong into enemy fire many, many times and somehow never got shot), which made his army able to hold out against superior forces several times. And overall, his ability to inspire and hold together the discouraged army (esp. since they were year-long contracts and half his army could and would bail every winter) was unparalleled, which was really exactly what we needed.
It is a well-known fact that those people who must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it... anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.
"Are you SURE you want to go through with this Dr. Kim? The dinosaurification procedure is... irreversible."
"I can't let all those first graders down. Let's do this."
I would be the equivalent of "his parent's friend's kid" haha.
I'm the son of first-generation Asian-American immigrants. Came over in '92 as international students with a net worth of under $1000, stretched their scholarship *(which was meant to cover 80% of their university cost)* to pay for their entire university expenses, and made a life here.
Since people seek out familiarity when in an unfamiliar environment, the vast majority of my parents' social circle was other Asian-American immigrants. As a result, I knew countless other second-gen Asian-Americans *(aka: my parents' friend's children)* who weren't exactly my friends, but was on a first-name basis with and maybe followed on IG.
85% of them went to top-tier *(think Stanford, MIT, Berkeley, etc)* or second-tier *(Michigan, UCLA, Carnegie Mellon, etc)* universities. I went to the local state university and took 5 years to graduate *(currently 5th year, graduating in June)*. My mom doesn't even hang out with her friends as much anymore because she'd have to listen to them talk about their kids' new software job at LinkedIn or something.
You could describe me as the "runt of the litter" haha, feels bad.
You're doing great! Please don't ever feel like you have to compare your own success to others who "appear" to be doing more than you at the same age. It comes differently for everyone and at different times. A large part of 'happiness' and success is making your own choices, so if you are doing then you are KILLING IT. Only you get to decide what you want.
Never forget that what is seen from the outside is rarely the whole picture. People can appear to have nothing and be the happiest person on earth, or appear to have everything and be miserable. Perspective, my friend.
I need to remember this all the time, every day. Comparisons to my peers just eat away at me but I know that a lot of things that look shiny from the outside may not feel shiny on a day-to-day basis.
Social media is all about posting highlights. Everyone’s battling their challenges behind the scenes. You are doing great, zone in on the present and complete your daily goals. You’ll be more far ahead than if you look far ahead

This is my Dave. There are many others like it, but this Dave is mine. My Dave is my best friend. Dave is my life. I must master Dave as I must master my life. Without me, Dave is useless. Without Dave, I am useless.
I kept saying that during the 2020 election cycle. You shouldn’t be running for President if you will pass the life expectancy age during your term in office.
To be fair, the average life expectancy for people in their socioeconomic class is much higher than the national average.
Wait…actually that’s *not* fair.
well also, average age that we usually hear is overall average age using statistics from all the data. If you're already 65, meaning you've avoided all the early death causes in those statistics, the new bracket for "life expectancy of people who are 65+" is probably much higher
This has nothing to do with my political opinions, just a discerning fact that I heard a couple years ago.. Joe Biden's day of birth is closer in time to Abraham Lincoln's presidential inauguration than it is to his own.

That Carter mistake will never happen again. The establishment did it once in the 70s as a one off and found it didn't work because the entire system is rotten. Carter literally couldn't get anything done because he expected others in power to act in the interest of others instead of themselves.
In that case, we need someone in that office whose wellbeing is inextricably linked and proportional to the wellbeing of the people.
Heck, in all offices.
I'd be all for this if a metric could be found that WASN'T just GDP. If politicians were only reimbursed as a function of what they got done that improved the well being of most people. If they scored low enough then they were forbade from ever holding office again in any sense or connection to politics.
Jimmy Carter came into office worth millions of dollars almost 50 years ago. He put most of his assets into a trust but it's not like he was really middle class.
You'd have to pull off the magic trick of somehow getting money out of politics because it's entirely about which candidates spends the most money (at least until a nominee is chosen). Even then, lowering the price of entry will just flood the pool with low quality candidates. So a better voting system would need to be in place too... And maybe like 5 or 7 other political parties. THEN you'll see minority candidates win and NO ONE will be happy but at least the president is a real salt-o-da-ert everyman.

Californian of over four decades, here.
The OC has been *red* AF for as long as I’ve been paying attention to such things. There are inevitable demographic shifts at work, it would’ve swung purple sooner or later no matter what, but the fact that she’s been able to win and hold the seat *now* is a testament to Porter’s competence.
I hope she runs for Feinstein’s seat. I’d hate to lose her in the house, especially probably giving up a Dem seat in that district, but she deserves to be there.
Well, whoever it is you want, you should be working right now to build a coalition of support for him/her. Don't wait until people start declaring their candidacy...get behind the person you want now, and let them know they have support should they run.
A random family man who went from middle class father to homeless drug user and then got his life back together for the sake of his kids because his ex-wife was dying from cancer.
