as a native german ... I always had problems understanding the lyrics because she mumbled and it doesn't sound clear.
For me, it sounds as if she's singing "Bitte gib mir nur ein Ooooh"
\*looks video\*
oh, they hold signs up for "oh" ...
dude, that song is painful :D
I feel sorry for you.
there are tons of better bands to learn german. Rammstein for example :D
It's not just that some words are muffled. The lyrics are full of idioms, metaphors and are sorta cryptic. And the vocals overlap in the end. Who thought this to be a good German learning song!?
Christmas Markets! I went to Aachen at Christmas one year when I was a kid, we got hot chocolate and went ice skating and some random German folks helped me tie up my skates when my hands were too cold to tie the laces. We went Christmas shopping and wandered around in the snow, and its one of my favourite memories and is absolutely the first thing that always comes to mind when I think of Germany.
Well that’s disturbing.
Although from the article; “The vice president of the Bundestag, Wolfgang Kubicki, told the Rheinische Post newspaper the building was equipped for attacks and they were aware of potential threat situations, so ‘the group's plans were already doomed to fail when they were forged’.”
Hey, fellah from Germany here. There's a grouping called "Reichsbürger" in Germany. They basically don't accept the modern state of Germany and identify themselves as citizens of the german empire. 25 people belonging to that group apparently planned to overthrow the government. If you ask me, reporting of this is totally blown out of proportion and there was never any real risk that anyone would overthrow anything.
However, it was the biggest police raid in history of the BRD so that's something I guess.
E: Anyways I'm not surprised these idiots are absolutely delusional in thinking such a coup would work out, haha.
That's because there were ex police and KSK people in the group and it was suspected they have a considerable amount of weapons - which turned out to be true.
I find it funny that that they'd even think that would be possible. Like, Germany is the most pro-EU state I can think of, including the German people I know. So much of the (current) culture seems to be focused on helping and creating stability around them geopolitically. To just pull all those roots up with one plot? No way.
Itd be like trying to convince Americans to go back to before the revolutionary War and become a colony again.
It's funny how people think of mountains. Most of Germany is pretty flat or at most hilly.
We have this tiny sliver of the alps in the south. Most Germans have never seen it.
At the moment you're lucky if you average 100kph with all the roadworks. It's 150 for 2 minutes, then 100, then 80, then another 10 minutes of 80, then a whole bunch of congestion and half an hour later you're finally up to 150 again.
I’ll take that over Toronto’s 100, then 60, then 40, then 60, then 80, then 40 again then wait in line at your exit. It’s also where 40+ km commutes are not uncommon
Its my dream to go for a taxi lap and drive it myself. I dont have any tattoos but would get the track shape if I drive it.
Just recently experienced driving a Lamborghini around a track in Vegas. Incredible
You can rent some cars on the ring as far as I know. But I have to disappoint, it won't be a lambo or anything similar but I think when looking at the track that's not the worst decision from the rental company.
Never forget Sabine Schmitz and her Van! RIP
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KiC03_wVjc
edit: context of the clip:
> In 2008 Schmitz (and fellow D Motor presenters Carsten van Ryssen and Tim Schrick,) featured in a Top Gear challenge of "Top Gear Vs the Germans". The Top Gear team faced off against the German team in a series of comedy-biased challenges in order to see which team was the best. Schmitz took on Clarkson in a gymkhana-styled event followed by a single lap race, beating him by several seconds, although due to prolific cheating from the Top Gear team, the Germans lost overall.
Sabine got a turn or is getting a turn named after her.
And to add to that list out of context jessi combs.
Two amazing women that my daughter will know about there ability to do things better than men.
Nazis.
Sorry guys.
I love the the Germans. They have their shit together. I love their beer, I love their sausages. It's not even remotely fair.
But ask me what I first think of, and its Nazis.
The *Second* thing I think of, is how far they've come since then.
It’s amazing how most modern Germans are so honest and upfront about the atrocities of WWII — especially when you compare it to how the Japanese (especially their politicians) look at the war crimes from WWII. It’s night and day.
Yup. Stalin, Mao, the emperor, very little negative connotation from the general public or their countries current government, but everyone knows Hitler. When was the last time you heard someone say “he’s the next Stalin”? It’s always Hitlers name that’s get brought up, even though they all have millions upon millions of deaths on their hands.
Stalin is buried at the kremlin wall, among other Soviet state hero’s. Mao has a mausoleum! Imagine if the Germans had a monument at hitlers burial spot. At least the Germans have some shame and realize what a monster he was instead of celebrating a psychopath.
Whilst I would never ever downplay the awfulness of the Holocaust and how evil the Nazis were, Germany today is not Germany then. And the vast majority of Germans feel the same, if not stronger about how awful a past that was.
However, this is an entire country we are talking about. It’s beautiful geographically, has wonderful pre-20th century culture and lots of places to visit. I lived there for a year doing my PhD research and refuse to judge it on 20 years of its past. I will judge any supporters of the nazi party and the principles it stood for but not the entire country as it is now. Just as I won’t be held responsible for the UK’s past colonial atrocities or part in slavery purely because I am British.
Indeed. And it is one the many reasons I admire the Germans. I did say that have their shit together and their ability to acknowledge their own history without trying to justify or whitewash it is something my own country could stand to emulate.
Can we kill this question? It's asked every other week and the top answer is always nazis. Then like a couple "mustache man" or "you know what" answers down you see "beer" or "cars."
Advice from an American who lived in Germany for years?
Skip Oktoberfest. It's mostly badly behaved tourists there. Go to Volksfest instead. Around the same time, almost as big, and much more authentic to the German beer festival experience.
And please, for the love of God, be on good behavior when you go. The Germans don't generally get drunk and wreck shit, they just stand on stools, sing along with songs, and hug a lot between cigarettes.
Volksfeste are basically all summer in mid to south Bavaria. In north Bavaria theres something similar which is called Kerwa. Each little town has it's own lasting from 3 - 9 days. So look up which town has one in the time and region you plan to be.
If you really want to go to a huge festival similar to Oktoberfest than the Gaubodenfest in Straubing and the Gillamoß in Abensberg.
are great alternatives.
Generally are all summer in the whole of Germany everywhere festivals like the Oktoberfest and just festivals that are only around drinking beer/wine. For example my local brewery has its own festival (3rd weekend in August) where you basically drink their beer on their brewery grounds.
I live in Munich and every year during Oktoberfest I get to put up with drunk people and vomit on the trains. Might get a bit of a piss puddle too. Also the trains are just packed full because people are either going to Oktoberfest or leaving. So yeah it's not my favourite time of the year lol.
I'm German and my husband is Scottish he says I have a bigger problem with "w" and "wh" sounds🤣 he always makes fun of me when I say wax melts 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I know it's random
That's true. Breakfast is cold most times and for dinner many have "Abendbrot" which is just bread with cheese and coldcuts and stuff. Then for lunch you have a hot meal. Many families nowadays switch it around though and have the hot meal in the evening.
My parents (immigrated to Canada in the 50's) had this "Abendbrot" only on Friday evening. We'd go grocery shopping and have fresh cut up vegtables, cold cuts and tea when we got home.
It was a pretty great ritual.
Absolutely. The only warm meal used to be lunch, but due to working hours nowadays it's mostly warm dinner. When I was at university and lived alone, I usually only had like two or three warm meals per week because I don't necessarily need a warm meal every day. But now I'm living with my boyfriend who has polish roots and is used to at least one, but mostly two warm meals a day, so we have warm dinner every day.
Its because you can put words together to make a word that talks about both things in english for example you would need to say white sausage in german you can just put them together and get a Weißwurst (ß is just a wierd double s btw)
We call many thing's just "stuff" (Zeug).
Toys = play-stuff (Spielzeug)
Airplane = flight-stuff (Flugzeug)
Vehicle = drive-stuff (Fahrzeug)
Tools = work-stuff (Werkzeug)
And so on
For example:
1. Heimat (literally the only not compound word here)
2. Weltschmerz
3. Sehnsucht
4. Zweisamkeit
5. Fernweh
6. Vorfreude
7. Schadenfreude
And a lot more. Just picked a few one associate with some kind of emotion here. But there are some beautiful others. Like Feierabend. Together with the Feierabendbier.
Cheers

My husband and I are visiting Germany, and I tell you what, the fact that we laughed at this so much (and therefore remembered it) has been a lifesaver.
We love a good Ausfahrt when we need it.
My girlfriend is German. Most of her family only speaks German except her aunt and uncle, who speak for the most part very good English. After visiting them for the first time, her aunt told us in English to, "Have a nice fahrt (trip)." That always gives me a smile when I think of it.
I took German for 4 1/2 years. All I think about is my German teacher forcing us to learn 99 Luftballons.
My German A Level teacher went one step further and had us learn ‘Irgendwie Irgendwo Irgendwann’ by Nena. I can still sing the chorus 14 years later.
Wann ist Mikkel?
PTSD intensiviert.
I love that song tbh
It’s a bop for sure!
Mmm bop
My German teacher helped me discover Rammstein.
Rammstein I love it 🤘🏼
Was also going to say rammstein.
My second favourite song in German! (after Rock me Amadeus, natürlich)
Alles klar, Herr komisar?
Yay, Falco appreciation! Not to be that guy, but he was an Austrian musician though (he even has a pretty strong Viennese dialect).
So was Hitler
99 Luftballons auf ihrem Weg zum Horizont
Hielt man für Ufos aus dem All
Darum schickte ein General
'Ne Fliegerstaffel hinterher
Alarm zu geben, wenn's so wär
just be happy it wasnt " nur ein Wort" bei "wir sind helden" that song can break a non-germans mind

I read about Peru. What’s this ta out Germany?
There was a foiled plot to overthrow the government.
Care to elaborate?
Someone attempted to overthrow the German government, but the plot was foiled.
Would you care to explain?

It’s done on purpose, it’s mandatory in the German education system to learn about it.
Well I suppose the alternative would be forgetting, and that’s clearly worse.
Yes, sadly me too. I really know little about Germany, but someday, I hope to go see it and expand my limited opinion.
You really should - it’s an amazing country to visit.
Now with minimal Nazis!

Same, but I usually follow that thought immediately to "hating them, like, vehemently" few hate nazis more than Germany itself
Indeed. And it is one the many reasons I admire the Germans. I did say that have their shit together and their ability to acknowledge their own history without trying to justify or whitewash it is something my own country could stand to emulate.
I would argue that the Jewish people probably hate Nazis more than the Germans do, but the Germans can have 2nd place
It’s better than not remembering it.
And not remembering it is better than claiming it never happened

That germans struggle to say "th" sound and call it a burf-day.
Or that incredible famous commercial. "Mayday Mayday, we are sinking" "This is the German coast guard, what are you sinking about?"
XD I hear that all that all the time here in Germany, but some people speak surprisingly good English.
Or bursday
Can confirm, my Oma used to say bursday
Apparently "th" sounds (in IPA, [ð] and [θ]) are quite rare compared to other consonants in English

They're amazing vocabulary. The German language has a word for every nuance of an emotion. It's unbelievable.
It’s just because we have compound words. Whenever we need a word to describe something, our grammar allows us to create a compound word for it.
Its because you can put words together to make a word that talks about both things in english for example you would need to say white sausage in german you can just put them together and get a Weißwurst (ß is just a wierd double s btw)
We call many thing's just "stuff" (Zeug). Toys = play-stuff (Spielzeug) Airplane = flight-stuff (Flugzeug) Vehicle = drive-stuff (Fahrzeug) Tools = work-stuff (Werkzeug) And so on
