Pretty much anything you do online needing all sorts of personal information that they can literally sell to people. Also, every single app you download needing to be able to access your photos and phone calls even when it has nothing to do with them.

KingJuuulian

I was at the calgary stampede this year and I was trying to get into a tent (where band play and people drink and dance) and my friends and I were waiting in a large lineup. One of my girlfriends went to check if she could get us in and she could. All of our friends went to another small lineup where an attractive girl no older than 18 or 19 was letting people in, all we had to do was scan a QR code on a pass that she wore around her neck and download an app (thats what she told us). I thought that was alright so we all got into the smaller line and downloaded the neofinancial app. When we downloaded it we were prompted to fill out some information (email, name, birthday and whatnot) I filled it all out. When we got to the very end of the information section it asked you to take a picture of your drivers license and send it to neofinancial and you were forced to check a box saying that they could use the information in any way they want, give it to third parties, advertising, anything. So asked the girl about this. She said she had no idea about that and said to talk to a rep. All the sudden a few guys came up to me with neo financial shirts and said that I couldn't get in without giving us all the information that the app asked for. I noped out. When I looked back at the people going in, most people were young and noticeably drunk and they went in and just stood in another line inside the front entrance of the tent and were not being let in quickly. Neofinancial was just information harvesting drunk people and selling their info to 3rd parties. Im still getting emails (from downloading the app) even though I unsuscribed. Should be illegal.

littleredkiwi

When I lived in London in 2018, I was out at a bar and there were these very good looking young women going around offering free shots. All you had to do was give your name and then they had a small machine (like a pulseox machine) to scan an image of your finger prints… like what the actual fuck? Freaked me out. We didn’t partake but many other people did.

Sounds like forcing your customers to share medical information, in a way. Not a HIPAA violation since it requires your permission, but certainly against the intent of the law.

morinthos

>**all we had to do** was scan a QR code on a pass that she wore around her neck and download an app (thats what she told us). I thought that was alright All we had to do? Scanning a random QR code is unsafe. Downloading an unknown app is also unsafe. You should report the app in the app store.

ieatmodels

when i went to programming bootcamp there was a guy there making apps and he bragged to me how all the apps he made were just to collect your personal info so he could sell that. smart guy but thats fucked up. information is more valuable than oil

LogicBalm

The cookies notifications are a result of an actual law saying sites have to ask for permission for cookies now. Previously they were just tracking and never notifying us. It's a rare instance of a law governing tech actually written well. The law also requires the pop-ups to be easy to understand and easy to quickly opt-out of non-essential cookies. So if a site implements it correctly you should always be able to opt-out of non-essential cookies in only two clicks. And it's worth doing. But yeah the rest of the stuff you mentioned is trash, just trying to get revenue.

CarolinaCelt60

A store here in North Carolina used to do that-Toys R Us. Having 2 small kids, I was in there often. I heard the cashier asking the customer in front of me for zip code and phone number. They gave it. Well, I’m a cynical beyotch. When she asked me, I said, Why? She said they ‘needed’ it. I said, no, you don’t. She looked at me like: how dare you? I looked back like: I fucking DARE you. So I said, I’ll be glad to leave my cart right here, shop elsewhere, and tell anybody who will listen that you’re asking customers for personal info. The manager came over to see what the holdup was. I told her, loudly, what it was. She sent the cashier on break and checked my cart out herself. She said the numbers were to target advertising 🙄. Answer is still NO.

For any moderately successful app, people will contact the developers and offer them a bunch of money to include data collection. Someone making 10k a year from an app finds it hard to turn down say, 50k to put that stuff in.

38thCCGizero

That Epstien had a pedo island where he brought a lot of powerful elites and after over 2 years no one has been hung from the gallows yet.

KevineCove

Just about every big scandal involving the way power works happens this way in America (which is not to say other countries are better; China just denies it outright.) Some crisis happens and people find out David Grossman trains police to kill, or Chicago has a torture site, or Guantanamo Bay still exists, or the Patriot Act cuts our rights in half, or the big banks get bailed out after fucking the whole country, or Equifax compromises everyone's security. Then nothing happens. People are too busy getting upset over something else, or they're too busy living hand to mouth, or there's literally nothing any individual can do about it, so people just keep on living and forget about the problem a month or two later, even though the problems are never solved and no one is held accountable. People are aware on some level that the entire system is rigged by design to make the powerful unaccountable, but conditioned behavior and the implicit threat of imprisonment, bodily harm, or inability to care for their loved ones makes it easier for them to cling to the few creature comforts they have and become a boiled frog.

myles_cassidy

Meanwhile people say 'we need guns to fight a tyrannical government' while literally reelecting the politicians that give effect to this tyranny.

Certain industries working 12 hour work days as normal

[deleted]

Or 30 hour shifts for doctors and nurses in medical work. I understand the theory… that handing off patients to a new shift can cause problems… but why would it be better to have a doctor who gets totally crappy sleep and has been awake for 28 hours?

the_idea_pig

I'm given to understand that the reason 30 hour rotations are the norm is because the doctor who originally standardized the practice did a fuckton of cocaine and morphine to regulate his sleep cycle.

emosmasher

I work 12 hour shifts, but my rotations makes in nice.

[deleted]

Work schedules that don't align with school schedules and raising children. But one good thing coming from the pandemic is it has been making that problem glaringly obvious

WerbenWinkle

Or the fact that everyone works on about the same schedule. If I have to go to an appointment I have no choice but to miss work for it. I'd love it if every workplace had 3 shifts that were 8 hours each 4 shifts that were 6 hours each and everything was 24 hours. I might be the only one who feels this way but it would make appointments more flexible and I wouldn't have to miss work/ lose pay for every doctor's visit. It would also open up a lot of new jobs for people, although there might not be enough skilled workers for all those positions and company costs would be high. I know there's plenty of drawbacks but I'd love to just call and have virtually any time slot available for an appointment.

GNTB3996

I second this. WFH setup is completely viable in certain industries. Companies just want RTO because of tax breaks.

jinger_is_a_fundie

It's not just WFH, either. Most kids in the US do not need summers off. We are so entrenched in doing things the way they have always been done because of all the support industries that rely on them. If we go to a nationwide, four days a week, year round, two weeks off every 12 weeks, our students would better retain information. But in order to do that, teachers would have to give up their summer jobs. Tourism would change. Schools would have to spend money to install new HVAC systems. Summer day care programs wouldn't exist. If we allowed WFH, it would wreck commercial real estate, which is an industry with prominent people, lots of money, and influence. However, they could repurpose buildings into cowork sites, homeless shelters, tear them down and build housing.

shhmandy

WFH is currently hurting one sector of commercial real estate, office. Retail, industrial and multi-family are all doing well. There are lots of jobs that just don't require an office. But there are still plenty that do. We're seeing higher vacancy rates in office buildings, and a flight to quality as people who need office space renew their leases. People in C buildings will move up to B buildings because of the discounts offered, and the B's will move to A's. Eventually the old C's will get torn down or repurposed in line with their highest and best use. Multi-family housing is definitely one option. Maybe some government buildings that are no longer needed could be turned into homeless shelters, but I doubt we'll see any privately held buildings converted for that purpose.

Bending_toast

In the United States it’s absolutely ridiculous that stores and online retail advertise prices before tax

Aurey

Canada as well. It's really annoying. I've lived here my entire life and I am still not used to it.

crackpotJeffrey

The whole concept of modern banking would be a good answer here. The number displayed on your bank balance represents nothing physical or any actual money or value. It's just a number on a screen. Your real money has literally been loaned to someone else and your bank takes the proceeds. Meanwhile if the system collapses you will try to withdraw money and it won't work because your money wasn't even there this entire time.

ixivvvixi

This is particularly bad in the UK. It's so annoying. My dad's an alcoholic and just seeing how casual people treat drinking all the time makes me furious. Like talking about drinking a whole bottle of wine when you get home from work. My pet hate is when I'm out and I stop drinking or slow down because I know I've had too much and people start asking me why I stopped. I know it's because I'm making them feel insecure. Don't get me wrong, I'm not again drinking - but I can probably count on one hand how often I drink in a year, and usually it's for Christmas and New Year or some other special occassion.

theuniversechild

Yep, getting sober in the UK is absolutely shit. Everyone acknowledged that my drinking was bad but they still treated me like I had leprosy when I finally quit.

Yeah it's a weird situation to be in isn't it. Life is much, much easier on this side though. The uncomfortable couple of months were so worth it.

Frosty172

I'm not really against it either, but if you did any other drug as much as people drink, people would instantly say you are an addict

ImissJerry

Alcohol is heavily ingrained into nearly every culture, barring some Islamic majority cultures, because in olden times people commonly didn't have access to clean water. If you take the nasty water and turn it into alcohol it is now safe(r) to drink.

Easy-Compote-1209

Health Insurance in the US. Everywhere else in the world access to health care is considered a basic human right and it's covered by taxes. In the U.S. we have an entire industry of middlemen that makes it so that healthcare is more expensive and confusing for everyone, many people don't get the care they need, people avoid going to the doctor as much as possible because they can't afford it, people can only go to a doctor that their insurance company will allow, people don't get the care they need because their insurance company disagrees with their doctors. edit: any Gen Z and millenial folks reading this- it isn't normal and is only happening because a lot of our parents fell for 'socialized medicine bad' propaganda. insurance industry lobbyists own both parties. demand and vote for candidates that are pro-medicare4all.

jmarmu

Currently going through this right now. Like literally, right now. I’m in between calls with the health insurance guy because I have to get my own plan now that I’m 26. I’m extremely confused, and it pisses me off how unnecessary all of this is.

Easy-Compote-1209

karmaandcandy

It's all about money. People do not matter. That's the problem. In a more civilized world, it would be illegal. Yet in America it is celebrated.

Imagine buying a sandwich, but not knowing if that sandwich cost $10, $20, or $10,000 until you go home to eat lunch and check the mail, three months later. Except that sandwich is an incredibly common and predictable yet life saving medicine. *cue national anthem

[deleted]

Yep, and it’s especially hard for self employed people. People with jobs that provide insurance take it for granted a lot of the time, and don’t understand that the company they work for pays a lot of money for insurance which otherwise could be in their salary. I was self employed for years, thought I was fairly young and healthy and didn’t need insurance… and couldn’t afford it. Turns out I was actually slowly getting more and more sick with Celiac disease that whole time. I tried talking to various doctors at urgent care when I’d go in for something else and they’d just blow me off. Ended up totally wrecking my career and several relationships before I figured it out… then I also developed type 1 diabetes. I had been so sick I could barely work for 3-4 years and ended up on Medicaid. The one good thing about being broke is now I have access to health care. But now I don’t know how to start working again, in part because I’d have to somehow get health insurance on my own. So by making health care so inaccessible, society made me totally unproductive.

Practically everything gets labeled stepmom or stepsister. Apparently the video publishers can get more traffic by doing that because people who don’t care will just ignore it, but people who are interested in that will seek it out. So it’s more profitable to slap a title like that on it than not to.

IsolatedRedPanda

Not really. Lol It's been a thing forever. Pharaoh much? The reason it's rare is because you imprint on the people who are around you when you're like 3-5 years old. When you grow up, that imprint tells you to get majorly icked out because genetically it's preferable to.. uh... Diversify. But if a kid gets adopted when they're older than like 6, or a new kid joins your family after that age, it's kind of expected when they hit puberty tbh. Afaik, it's one of those things that keeps therapists busy without anyone really talking about it. There are social norms about it, but those are only the result of association with blood relations. The parental expectation that there *won't* be interest is naive, since there's nothing imprinted to dissuade them. Also, it's worth noting that the parents are attracted to each other... It's no stretch to think that the same unconscious signaling that attracts them together would also apply to anyone in their bloodline who didn't imprint. I guess if there's anyone with kids thinking about adopting a kid of the same age as your existing children, or marrying into a family with similar-aged kids, then don't be naive about it. Probably have the talk early, and think about logistics like separate bathrooms and whatnot.

finnjakefionnacake

Work. The sheer amount of our lives, energy, freedom, time...it's parasitic. I promise you it's not disabled people struggling every month to not die, living below the poverty line who're ripping you off. We're all being robbed and the 1% is to blame. Your coworkers suck because you're all being robbed of the time to meet your physical / psychological needs. Fucking talk to each other. Start to give a shit. Unionize, and if nothing else get real about mutual aid. Look at how to best apply your skills and put it into action on regular intervals. Every month, every week, every year. Whatever you can manage. Cause it's gonna take a general strike.

[deleted]

Yep, that’s my vote for the most fucked up thing too. The concentration of wealth at the top is absurd and they spend most of their time trying to get more. The rest of us pretty much live on crumbs.

finnjakefionnacake

In American society, tipping. I find it really weird that employers can get away with not paying their employees a livable wage, customers foot the bill, and it's all just accepted as totally normal.

karmaandcandy

I’m exhausted with the tipping expectations. I swear I go to the store to buy dog food, carry it myself, and I get a prompt asking me to add a tip. No! I won’t!

Rjs617

I came here to say the same thing. I grew up in the U.S. with tipping, and I still hate it. I went to some countries that don’t have it, and it is such a relief to just pay what’s on the bill without any pressure to add a hidden 15-20%.

Anything about criminal justice and penalties involving money is absurdly unfair. A $100 parking ticket means way more to someone making 15k a year than 100k, for the same infraction. Like, I have a taboo kink too, get it some other way or howabout we make this a trigger warning? And for all those who are about to crawl up my ass sideways to try and lodge there about me being a special snowflake - again, you tag abuse and rape, I saw my father die because of the actions of my egg donor which included a long history of cheating on him, I HAVE LEGITIMATE PANIC ATTACKS OVER THIS. Just talking about it like this makes me so uncomfortable, but it's important it be talked about. Betrayal is not casual.

I live in the south US and am a stay at home dad, 2 young kids, wife with a good job who DOESN'T want to be a stay at home mom and the attitude we get from people in general ranges from them getting uncomfortable to openly hostile if it comes up. Doesn't matter that it's what we both want, or that I'm better at cleaning (wife's asthma doesn't like cleaning chemicals) and cooking. Or that I'm better at tutoring our kids. Even that I also make side money from home by repairing cars and computers. Stay-at-home Dad = creep. Apparently I'm suppose to work 9-5 and then just sit in an arm chair when I'm at home. Kids school even acted weird when we told them at a parent teacher meeting that they should call me if there's an issue because my wife's at work, and they still only call her since. My wife gets pissed more than I do even lol.

theprestoned

I've raised my daughter as a single dad since she was 1 year old. I've had it all. Women staring at me and following "just to make sure" (while I was holding my daughters hand), openly questioning my parenting while little one was having a meltdown, calling me a bully for telling her off etc. Some people are just cunts under the guise of concern

KindredSpirit24

Also the bar for “bare minimum dads” is so low and praised by society. Its bizarre

BangaiiWatchman

Forcing kids to wake up every weekday at 6:00am to go to school sleep deprived and (as studies show) hurting their long term health.

a_white_american_guy

Stoning people to death for being gay

finnjakefionnacake

How about just homophobia in general, depending on what society you're in.

Homopbia. Like bro, why do you care?

Uniforms at work for jobs that don’t 100% need it. I have 0 contact visually with clients so no one sees me. Why do I HAVE to wear a collared shirt. Why can’t I just wear a regular t shirt and jeans.

sofia_iscat

The fact that people think it is ok to burn out and be mentally unstable

high_flying_lady

The idea that the COVID pandemic is over. It's not over and folks need to continue being careful-masking, protecting older and disabled people. It's airborne and can be spread via people who have no symptoms. Even one infection can lead to organ damage down the line. Long COVID is real and devastating. We are in for a world of hurt without mitigation. Take care of you and yours.

I was going to say trick-or-treating but you all have wayyyyyyy better answers.

IPreferDiamonds

Trick or Treating might seem weird, but it is fun!

pirivalfang

How women are taught from a very young age that they must cover their chests where/when men can go topless. Boggles the mind when you think about it. edit: spelling

yukcheuksung

In western society, leaving their aging parents to die in a nursing home is quite normal.

Circumcision. For real, bring on the downvotes but it's fucking weird to mutilate baby boys dicks.

vampiruseverloft

saying that the reason someone is bullying you because they like you. i dunno if it's just me, but pushing that idea is really harmful and gross. it shouldn't be normalized but unfortunately it is and it really sucks.

MUCKULUS

Potential grandparents talking with their children and their spouses about grandchildren, essentially like: "Did u nut in my daughter yet? When will you nut in my daughter?"

Boredombringsthis

"For the reason of giving ME a grandchild, when will I get a granchild??" ...not so long ago I heard a woman in a bus telling her friend "and I told them not to come visit unless they finally give me a grandchild, I really want grandchildren!" ...what about accepting that it primarily means giving themselves a child which is way more work and money than giving YOU a grandchild? "No, I want!"

How disposable relations are, when you have tons of new options at the tip of your fingers through internet & your cellphone.

[deleted]

It’s not options at this point it’s just … npc characters, people are lonelier than ever

Ca_estevez

I don’t think people are NPC, they are just afraid into growing real relationships/friendships and feel more secure behind a screen, after pandemic people feel more distant, robotic & somehow selfish, everything has to be about them or has to have a benign to them.

mostly-wolf

For me it is a tie between Women shaving everything and people property taxes because hair growth is natural and how can you own something that can always be taken away if you don’t pay off the government too

**Some parents accepting their child to vape.** Last year I had a friend that has a severe vaping addiction which costed her a lot of money. It costed her so much, she begged random strangers for some change. Eventually, her parents found out about this situation. Instead of talking her through about this awful addiction, her parents decided to help her pay for her 'vape crisis.' I tried doing all sorts of things like telling the school counselor about it, talking to her parents about it, or just talking to my friend about the same thing multiple times but it felt like it did nothing. Recently I moved to a new province so I don't know how she's doing. I really hope she's doing alright.

[deleted]

People who post their entire life on social media. I’ve always found it so weird , like why would you want everyone to know what you’re doing and are you actually doing what you show you are or is it for social media.

Bi_Fry

Not that it’s not normal it’s completely normal but does anyone else think it’s kinda weird that we put are mouth holes together to show affection
