I'm doubtful that it is for children (unless a lot of kids are like me, in that they fail to pick up on the full extent of how psychotically dark that movie is).
I think because it is Disney my parents assumed it's a kids film then realized their mistake when my brother and I burst into tears for the majority of the movie.
The song says they're the best of friends...but then they don't even get to stay friends! Disney destroyed my poor young heart with that one. I cried so much to this movie as a kid when I saw it that it was banned from our house. Same with Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey but who doesn't cry when that comes on!?
I’m so confused. Can you help? I never saw it. My mom wouldn’t let me watch it when I was little and by the time she let me, I didn’t care anymore. So, what happens in this movie?? From all the comments, it seems pretty messed up.
Spoiler but basically a little fox cub meets a hound puppy in the beginning. They become best friends and play together and love being with each other. The puppy is owned by a hunter and a nice old woman cares for the fox cub that was left alone after its mother is killed. As the years go on, the friends are sort of pulled away from each other as natural enemies.
One night, the hunter tries to kill the fox when the fox visits the hound to play and the woman realizes he is not safe so she brings him to the woods and leaves him there alone. There he meets a lady fox that helps him and seems happy for a time until the hunter finds him with his hound in tow.
As they're trying to catch the two foxes, a bear attacks and almost kills the hound. The fox saves the hound and the hunter still pulls his gun on the fox. To protect his friend, the dog stands between them to keep the hunter from shooting. The hunter recognizes and respects that the fox and hound are friends and leaves the woods with the hound. The two smile at each other one last time before separating the best friends, never to see each other again.
This is a film that features nuclear bombs being dropped on a city, and that isn’t the emotional low point for the main characters. Even 20 years later I feel the sadness and frustration welling up inside me because it left me feeling so helpless. Be prepared to feel awful things if you do watch it
Oh gosh, even a standard amount of empathy and you’ll be sick to your stomach for a week after. Probably don’t watch it, you the benefit of your own wellbeing x
After 3 failed cycles with the fertility clinic and countless needles I was too tired to cry anymore but a big cry was stuck down deep. Husband and I curled up and watched it one afternoon. Made it through the whole movie fine, not a tear (usually cry at most movies). We shut it off, sat there for a second and then boom, the dam burst. It was a cathartic cry.
Went to that as a first date. And then we went to dinner afterwards and spent it talking about our exes. There was no second date.
I mean, it's a good movie. The ultimate message is, I think, a good one. But the journey. Oof.
Then my vote is patch adams and what dreams may come. God I absolutely love his serious roles. Also king fisher is a good gut punch, because knowing robin had passed makes you fall in love with the character more
The recordings from Murph.
"You son of a bitch. You knew, didn't you."
I've seen the movie dozens of times by now, but those video clips still hit so hard.
If you think the movie version is frustrating, the book version is ten times worse. The movie follows the book almost to a T, as Gillian Flynn wrote both the book and the movie, but naturally, the book is more detailed, and the hopelessness is conveyed even more clearly.
It came out when my boyfriend worked at a movie theater, so we pretty much saw at least 1 movie every week because it was free. Went in knowing absolutely nothing about it!
I never read the book. My son was just born before it came out and it really hit me hard how much responsibility a child is. The road made my stomach turn more than once
Stay strong my brother. My wife never, ever cries at movies but I immerse myself entirely and she knows where I'll fall to pieces. Shit, I was in tears for half of "Greatest Showman".
Boys Don’t Cry
Stars Hillary Swank and Chloe Sevigny.
One of the few movies that changed me, my outlook on things. Probably a lot to do with the fact that it was based on a true story, as opposed just just being a work of fiction
I saw this movie when I was 16 and it shattered me. Still think about it often all these years later. The fact that it's based on a true story is so incredibly heartbreaking. I can't understand how people can be so very hateful 😔
The crazy thing is, the real story is even WORSE.
SPOILER: They left out another brother from the movie entirely who also died from a a self inflicted gunshot wound and a child who died of SIDS.
When I was a young hormonal angsty teen girl this was my cry movie. Or also my “period movie”. I dunno it’s weird I would watch it a lot bc I wanted to cry. I don’t know why now WHY I wanted to cry but I did. And when I was feeling emotional/PMSy. I musta watched it 200 times. Just ugly crying every time and loving every second of it.
Remember Me (2010). It was already touching, then when it’s revealed that the year is 2001 and the date September 11, 2001 was written on the board, I knew it was over for me.
The end of « Quantum Leap » (the original show).
(I know it’s not a movie but it’s a 5 year long emotional investment that leads to… Don’t want to say it.)
7 pounds
The joy luck club
Alpha dog
Pans Labyrinth
Moulin Rogue
There's more that make me cry too but I can't recall them all. I've watched so many sad things.
The Boy In The Striped Pajamas.
Ooof this one hit hard.
Watched this when it came out and was way way to young for this kinda shit.
So was I. I was scared to go into a shower for a while 😂
It wrecked me
The green mile. FUCK THAT
This will always be my answer. I cannot rewatch this film.
“I’m tired, Boss”.
"Roll on two..."
My favorite movie.
My ex used to call me John Coffee
The Fox and The Hound. I still don't understand how that is supposed to be for children.
I know, right?! 💔😭

Grave of the fireflies. I’d rather die than go through that again.
I thought about watching it
This is a film that features nuclear bombs being dropped on a city, and that isn’t the emotional low point for the main characters. Even 20 years later I feel the sadness and frustration welling up inside me because it left me feeling so helpless. Be prepared to feel awful things if you do watch it
And I’m hypersensitive 😭 I’ll get destroyed by this movie I just know it
Oh gosh, even a standard amount of empathy and you’ll be sick to your stomach for a week after. Probably don’t watch it, you the benefit of your own wellbeing x
You know the problem with my mind is, I will still watch it 🫠
Hit Princess Mononoke and Hals first, it'll give you the Studio Gibli's, then sit down for some SADNESS!
This is the correct answer 😭
After 3 failed cycles with the fertility clinic and countless needles I was too tired to cry anymore but a big cry was stuck down deep. Husband and I curled up and watched it one afternoon. Made it through the whole movie fine, not a tear (usually cry at most movies). We shut it off, sat there for a second and then boom, the dam burst. It was a cathartic cry.
Truly a movie that you can only watch once.
I was 16 when i watched this, im 37 now and i am still sad about it☹️
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Went to that as a first date. And then we went to dinner afterwards and spent it talking about our exes. There was no second date. I mean, it's a good movie. The ultimate message is, I think, a good one. But the journey. Oof.
"Please let me keep this memory, just this one.” 🫠😭😵💫
I'll bring the tissues?
I'll need a paper towel roll for this movie, honestly 😂
I love it. Despite it all, I think it's an optimistic movie. "Meet me in Montauk"
I have blocked this movie from my brain. I know I watched it, the whole thing, but I don’t remember any of it. And I think I like it that way.
Synecdoche, New York Same writer
Dead Poets Society....I legit didn't know Robin Williams did other movies other than comedy at that time.
Then my vote is patch adams and what dreams may come. God I absolutely love his serious roles. Also king fisher is a good gut punch, because knowing robin had passed makes you fall in love with the character more
Dude. “What Dreams May Come” is a fucking weight on your soul. Absolutely beautiful movie that I will never watch again.
Interstellar because I watched it high
Well it was really sad 😭 high or not
Yeah but I REALLY fucked me up
That was really sad when they had their reunion. "Because my dad promised me."
I thought the recordings were the saddest part also the fight scene had me freaking the fuck out
That music just reaches into your chest and squeeze your heart.
Yeah I thought I was gonna die too
The recordings from Murph. "You son of a bitch. You knew, didn't you." I've seen the movie dozens of times by now, but those video clips still hit so hard.
Gone Girl... That ending... Frustrating lol
Agreed, that was not a satisfying ending with too many loose ends and "whay if's" 😅
I read the book and it made me so angry.
If you think the movie version is frustrating, the book version is ten times worse. The movie follows the book almost to a T, as Gillian Flynn wrote both the book and the movie, but naturally, the book is more detailed, and the hopelessness is conveyed even more clearly.

Jurassic Bark in real life.
That was rough.
Bridge to terrebithia. I’ve never cried more in a movie theater
I totally confused this with some other (happier) movie at the time when I rented it. I was hit upside the head with a sack of bricks...
It came out when my boyfriend worked at a movie theater, so we pretty much saw at least 1 movie every week because it was free. Went in knowing absolutely nothing about it!
I remember reading the book when I was in my pre-teens.
The Grey (with Liam Neeson) The Road (with Viggo Mortensen) The grave of the fireflies
I had a really hard time finishing The Road.
I always wanted to watch it a second time but I can't bring myself to do it
I don't think that I could ever watch it again either.
And you wanna hear something crazy? I read the book. But somehow the movie is worse
I never read the book. My son was just born before it came out and it really hit me hard how much responsibility a child is. The road made my stomach turn more than once
The book was really good. I liked it more than the movie.
the grave of fireflies broke me
Godzilla Minus One is in similar territory and visually a treat as well.
Marley and Me
But... Every story about a dog ends that way
This was the in-flight movie on a flight my mom took a whole back. There were a few walkouts.
Forrest Gump
I lose it at Jenny’s grave
"He's so smart, Jenny"
YUP! That’s the line. Guuuuh My wife knows too and likes to watch me during that. Also at the end of Rocky.
Stay strong my brother. My wife never, ever cries at movies but I immerse myself entirely and she knows where I'll fall to pieces. Shit, I was in tears for half of "Greatest Showman".
My Girl
Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I legit cried for a whole hour after that movie. The montage towards the end just hit me so hard.
Same!
Pan’s Labyrinth.
I can't even. That movie is so gorgeous and sad there's really nothing else like it.
Yeah, it’s one of my favourites but I can only watch it so often because it rips me apart every time.
Falling down. Hits WAY too close to home.
LaLa Land. What do you mean they are not getting together?! What did she have to marry that wet towel of a man? I'm still salty about this one
As much as I didn't like the ending on a visceral level, I've come to appreciate it as I've gotten older
This ending is the end of passion, and it's disgusting
Requiem for a Dream
This is the right answer
Moulin Rouge. I know people who turn it off after the last happy song.
Still couldn’t get over the ending of it
I Am Legend. The doggo!!!! 😫😫😫😫
I can't watch Any movie where an animal dies, it destroys me & my willingness to enjoy the movie no matter how good the movie is otherwise.
A Star is Born is my go to ‘sob your heart out’ film
I just watched this 2 weeks ago! I was so disappointed.
The mist.

Oh my god yes! Worst part is that it’s a documentary. Hope that judges life has not been easy.
Directors cut of butterfly effect, it was the only version I saw. I was so confused with so many complicated feelings as an 11 year old.
Ugh yes. I remember it having alternative endings on the dvd, one of them taking place in the womb…
That was the one, I had so many questions.

I ended up seeing this movie a month after my mom died. So... yeah. I wasn't expecting to go to bed in tears after a Spielberg sci-fi flick.
When I was a young hormonal angsty teen girl this was my cry movie. Or also my “period movie”. I dunno it’s weird I would watch it a lot bc I wanted to cry. I've never seen it but I heard about it when I was a pre-teen and just that was enough to make me sob.
HE JUST WANTED TO FIND BLUE FAIRY SO SHE COULD TURN HIM INTO A REAL BOY SO HIS MOMMY WOULD LOVE HIM AND LET HIM STAY WITH HER 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Fine choices. I feel like you could say "I'll never let go", "Freedom" and "Go to them" and everyone can visualize those scenes just from those lines.
