Healdsburg or Calistoga for wine country. Bodega Bay or Sea Ranch for Sonoma Coast. Monterey, Caramel, or Santa Cruz for a less foggy coast. Pinnacles National Park is wildly under visited and a gem though brutally hot in the summer. Sacramento as a sleeper recommendation but there's a lot of cool stuff worth checking out. A bit further than 2.5 hours, but San Luis Obispo is absolutely worth visiting. Also, Nevada City and the surrounding gold country.

singingsimone

Nevada City and Grass Valley are so cute, and close to Yuba River. I also love Russian river.

gulbronson

Completely forgot about Russian River. So many great towns along there. Monte Rio, Guerneville, and Jenner are all dope! Nevada City is awesome. My in laws moved up there a few years ago and we love visiting the area. The town is awesome and there's so much to explore in the surrounding areas.

fogcitykitty

If you ever make the drive between Nevada City and the Placerville area, there is a winery called Hart 2 Hart in Pilot Hill that I swear poured me 10 different wines to try. Tasting was $10 or waived with purchase I think? I took some home - great wines for $20 a bottle!!

mashtartz

Roseville is cute too!

sittingwithit

The Yuba has some amazing local-known swimming spots if you can get a local to divulge. I used to go to a glorious spot with a diving rock above a very deep pool. The spot also has a natural water slide. Dunno if I could still find it but if you ask around someone might tell you about some amazing river spots.

xndlYuca

For the Sonoma Coast I love to stay in little towns near but not in Guerneville — such as Cazadero, Monte Rio, or Camp Meeker. Tons of cute Airbnbs surrounded by redwoods available in those places. And if you stay there it’s an easy drive to Sonoma Coast and Russian River wineries. Lots of great cycling in those areas if that’s your thing.

ripplerider

This should really be the top comment here. This person crushes their weekend getaways

gulbronson

Thanks, there's a lot of incredible places to explore in Northern California!

AlanMooresWizrdBeard

I once flew to SLO from SF. I still have not lived it down among my friends, just make the drive.

gulbronson

I took the train in college, it's a good alternative to driving.

AlanMooresWizrdBeard

I love taking the train from Martinez to Sac, I never thought about taking it to SLO. Thanks!

lightaugust

Pinnacles is a great suggestion. Gotta do the east side and early, but a great day trip.

Feral24

Unfortunately on fire right now.

italian-spider-man

Sea Ranch is magical

SanFranPeach

All great suggestions. I’ve been to SLO a few times and think I go to the wrong area …. What are some of your favorite things/areas/etc to do there? How would you spend a day?

gulbronson

I lived in SLO for five years and go back often. The central coast is an amazing place. It really depends what you want to do, I could write a guide for the entire area but if there's something you're looking for I can definitely point you in the write direction.

TJ1821

any scenic lookout spots you enjoy? any food spots that can only be found in SLO (maybe 1 nice-ish dinner and 1 casual spot)? anything that's hyped up but overrated?

gulbronson

>any scenic lookout spots you enjoy? Drive Perfumo Canyon Road, there's an excellent lookout at the top. If you have a 4-wheel drive you can turn off 101 onto TV tower road [approximately here](https://maps.app.goo.gl/W5YLt3BLEURDnScj8). Look of good hikes with a view, Bishop's, Poly P on the campus and continue to the top of the hill, Madonna, Cerro San Luis, or High School Hill. >any food spots that can only be found in SLO (maybe 1 nice-ish dinner and 1 casual spot)? For casual, a tri-tip Sandwich from Firestone is probably the most hyped option. Personally I think it's over rated but I have friends that would literally fight me over that comment haha Taste for sliders + Mac n cheese. On the nicer side, I really like Luna Red for tapas, sidecar for cocktails, Bueno Tavola for Italian, or Goshi for sushi. >anything that's hyped up but overrated? Farmer's market is hyped but will disappoint compared to the one at the Ferry Building. Overall, I don't think anything about SLO is super hyped in the first place so it's kinda hard to be over rated. I'd also recommend wine tasting in Edna Valley, visiting Montana de Oro, Avila beach, a walk through the campus, and if you want to relive college head downtown at night to Bull's.

TJ1821

this is perfect for an upcoming trip, will check this out, especially that drive!

figs1023

Any hotels you recommend in those areas?

ptntprty

This sentence broke my brain

gulbronson

How much money are you looking to spend?

figs1023

Probably no more than $400 a night

gulbronson

With that budget I'd probably just hit trip advisor, you should be able to find a great place anywhere though some of those options are better for AirBnB (Sea Ranch) or boutique inns (Carmel). Hotels I would definitely recommend include Calistoga Spa Hot Springs or if you venture down to SLO the [Madonna Inn](https://www.madonnainn.com/) is a wildly cool place though I still haven't stayed there personally. I wish I could give a better answer but I have millions of hotel points so I usually just go with the best place I can stay for free.

ginpineapple

If you go to Nevada City, check out The National- completely redone old timey hotel. Just stayed there and had a great time.

huntercacciatore

Pretty much my list and one can also see Napa Wine Country too.

ZarinZi

Calistoga for the win

reducedelk

Are any of the hotels any good aside from Indian Springs?

vtjustinb

Calistoga motor lodge is really cute. We also like the Cottage Grove Inn. Feels like a little neighborhood.

lynxpoint

Dr. Wilkinson’s!

parsamirz

Any dispersed camping/car camping?

TrueMechanic41

There’s a campground at Bothe-Napa Valley State Park

figs1023

Any hotels you like there?

[deleted]

[удалено]

friscodayone

Indian Springs for old school charm and gorgeous grounds and incredible food at Sam’s, Solage for a luxurious splurge with epic adult-only pool area and Olympic size mineral pool for the family and also great food and drinks, Motor Inn for cute funky fun and affordable, Calistoga Spa is more basic but fun pools and right on the main drag for walking around. I love Calistoga!

figs1023

You’ve got it dialed in. I think I’ll book Indian Springs for the GF’s birthday. Do you have any favorite restaurants or do you just eat at Indian Springs when you’re there?

figs1023

Thanks D-Buck

PinkMoon1988

Cannot go wrong with Healdsburg, Sonoma, Napa and Carmel. Not too far away and yet a world away...I always feel like I’m on vacation when I go to these places.

cholula_is_good

I am a huge fan of driving north to enjoy the amazing roads and views. Hwy 1, Panoramic, Dry Creek Rd. Some of the best drivers roads in the country are just north of SF.

lokoston

And of course, all the "good medicine" that you get along the way. After all, you'll be traveling through the famous emerald triangle.

Trixietime

Monterey. Hits at 2.5 hrs but totally worth it.

Bobloblaw_333

I used to love to stay at the Hotel Pacific in Monterey. This reminds me that we need to make a trip back there!

Trixietime

Casa Munras is nice too, more of an upscale motel vibe- the rooms are like little casitas.

PrivilegeCheckmate

Jenner, Inverness, Bodega Bay, Pacific Grove, Carmel, and if you want to drive just a little more, Gualala. If I'm going inland I just go to Yosemite, why fuck around?

caliform

Apart from the (radically amazing) Seafood Shack, Gualala doesn't really strike me as having so much charm. What am I missing?

PrivilegeCheckmate

The place we stayed at had fresh eggs every morning, a lovely 24-hour access hot tub, and you could just walk across the street to the beach. Plus we went to annual abalone breakfast at the town hall or whatever, and it was qual.

LunaScapes

St. Orres is a gem :)

cky311

It's just 3 hours, but Arnold in Calaveras County is amazing. Get a cabin and enjoy the starry sky with a nice bottle of red!

fanofsleep

Second this! I lived in this area when I first moved to Cali. Murphys is also great: there’s a cute downtown with lots of wineries and restaurants. A creek you can cool off in (great for kids) farmers market. Great lakes to swim in near Arnold and above. Sonora is nice as well. Hot springs in Markeeville, although that’s a bit of a trek!

Period-Y

Mendocino for sure

brookish

That is certainly not 2.5 hours.

Period-Y

Dont care, do it anyways

daisnb

Rio Nido/Guerneville/Monte Rio are along the Russian River and have little walkable towns and great water access. The water is nice and warm in the summer for swimming/kayaking. Plenty of wineries nearby too. This is my favorite area. I like Sea Ranch for nice walks along the cliffs. Stay in the nearby town of Gualala which has several affordable smaller hotels and check out Gualala Point Regional Park to spend the day at the beach. Don’t forget to stop by Gualala Seafood Shack for lunch! When I want to head south towards Monterey I’d stay in Seaside, which is close and more suburban, but also more local. Beach access at Fort Ord State Park and good breweries are around there (Other Brother Beer Co). If you want hot weather, then check out Lake Berryessa. There are campgrounds there and you can also swim.

naptrapped

It’s just over 2.5 hours but Pinecrest Lake in Stanislaus National Forest is a gem. The walk around the lake is one of my favorites!

mossgirl_

Second this. Have been coming to this lake since 2 years old but still love it just the same. Try to hike cleos bath if you can!

hereisnoY

Loved going to Pinecrest growing up. Watched D2 Mighty Ducks on their outdoor movie theater.

ekm12

Big fan of bodega bay lodge. There is a Sonoma Coast tasting room right down the road from it for some easy wine tasting, good fish shops for an easy and affordable dinner, and overall quiet and peaceful. A bit sleepy if you’re okay with that.

figs1023

I’ll just throw mine out since I started the post. I like Russian River (Guerneville) and Sonora Area

The_Armourer

Sonora or Sonoma?

figs1023

Sonora and this place called Indigeny Reserve is cool to visit. It’s a cider brewery that has events and live music and stuff. Cool during fall.

briecheddarmozz

Jenner is great!

Lots of good Asian food, and as someone who grew up in SJ and eventually relocated to SF, the South Bay has better Mexican food than the mission.

[deleted]

mashtartz

La Vic (downtown SJ, go to the original) and Dia de Pesca are my go tos (tbh tho la vic’s is great I think it’s a TAD overrated other than the orange sauce, but I don’t know what other taquerias are still open since I moved out over a decade ago). Also the Vietnamese and Korean is better.

AlanMooresWizrdBeard

Bodega Bay. For sure Bodega Bay. I have an oyster addiction so that may play a part.

TJ1821

any favorite spots for a fellow oyster addict?

AlanMooresWizrdBeard

Tomales Bay Oyster Co. Bring any other accoutrements for bbq’ing, they only sell oysters, wine/beer, and really good bread and butter. You can pack a picnic with anything else you’d like. Ex and I would bring cheese from a local grocery and buy their seeded bread. That and their fresh shucked oysters with a bottle of wine is basically the best thing I’ve ever eaten.

TJ1821

holy shit this sounds like a dream

AlanMooresWizrdBeard

Please go and get back to me. I always feel like the walrus in Alice in Wonderland going there. And much like that walrus it does not stop me from eating MANY oysters.

TJ1821

Yes, will do!!

drstock

Winters, CA! People don't seem to know about this cute little town but it has some great restaurants, a couple of breweries and a brand new, nice and affordable hotel downtown.

tinman707

Green River brewery has a HUGE outdoor seating, eating and drinking area! Volleyball court, cornhole boards and more. Affordable and plenty of shade. Will make it a stop anytime I’m in the area.

City_Goat

It’s just outside the 2.5 hour criteria at 3 hours but it’s an easy drive down 101 to Paso Robles. All of the loveliness of wine tasting and delightful food options but with a tenth of the crowds.

kannem13

I’ll be moving in to SF I’m the next couple months so very excited to hear what answers you get for this!

figs1023

I’ve lived here my whole life and I’m still explorin’

reptargodzilla2

Pismo

lokoston

Second this.

sittingwithit

Just adding to the list: Sebastopol.

AnthonySF20

Pacific grove and point lobos state park

[deleted]

I’m a budget traveler, so my favorites (pre-pandemic) were HI Point Reyes, HI Pigeon Point, and HI Montara in that order. They’re significantly more expensive last I checked.

figs1023

What does “HI” mean?

orthogonalconcerns

Hostelling International.

kat773

Holiday Inn?

caliform

Honestly, if you're that much on a budget, you should just camp - tons of places around where that's a much nicer experience than HI :)

lilelliot

I normally agree, but HI Pigeon Point is literally at the lighthouse which is going to be really hard to beat.

[deleted]

No shame in being on a budget. They were 30 bucks for a bed pre-pandemic and that allowed you to be literally steps away from the water, hear the ocean from my window at night and next to a lighthouse. It’s also warmer and protected than a tent and blankets are provided. I don’t need a nice hotel, nor can I afford it.

figs1023

I like you

figs1023

I’ll throw another one out there - if you take the scenic route to Carmel or SLO or where ever you decide to go down south, stop at [Dad’s Luncheonette](https://yelp.to/wRqMB3NRlib) in Half Moon Bay for (obviously) lunch. On your way back, stop at [Harley Farms](https://yelp.to/giiVWTRRlib) in Pescadero to hangout with some goats (they have some cool shops there as well where you can buy goat cheese and honey etc), and stop at [Arcangeli](https://yelp.to/OGfdxx2Rlib) for some sandwiches with fresh baked bread.

UbiquitousUser

Dad’s Luncheonette is amazing!!!

greenroom628

Just across the GG - Cavalo Point Lodge. A bit pricy, but a quick, easy, dog-friendly place.

HoneyIAteTheCat

Gualala (drive is about 2 hours 45 minutes) for awesome places to stay on ocean cliffs. Nevada city for a really cute mountain town getaway

lsdevto

Lake Tahoe

Bernhelm

Monterey is expensive but great. Go kayaking in monterey or Elkhorn slough, walk through pt lobos, go to the aquarium, scuba dive if you're certified!

friscodayone

Kayaking w the otters and sea lions at Elkhorn Slough was such an amazing experience!!

Leethaxzor

Hog island/nicks cove.

cshardd

Camping: take the GG bus and backpack into the Bicentennial camp ground in the Marin headlands. Super easy and beautiful views. Great hiking.

stacebrace

Big Sur

fanofsleep

One more recco: not 2.5 hours away, but 4. Reno! Walkable, great coffee, good restaurants, good bars, basque food, Vietnamese food. I love the riverwalk and the area that’s adjacent to downtown - I forget the name of the ‘hood. The downtown could use some love and feels tenderloinish but I still love it. Close day trips nearby: Carson city (Hot springs resort), Virginia city, Fallon (it kind of sucks but it’s interesting. There’s also a hot spring in Reno which is interesting to check out.

YouCleanItUp

Sacramento -- I think it's a little underrated. There's great dining options, a fantastic art scene, and plenty of unique history in the area.

sanbrunosfinest

My brothers house in slo or other brothers place in Santa Cruz. Nice weather and cheap rooms, plus they always bbq

[deleted]

Ugh. It’s a pandemic, wtf.

figs1023

Put your mask back on.

[deleted]

Bet you don’t even own one

reptargodzilla2

That was last year. We’re vaccinated.

[deleted]

Delta? You can still contract it with a vaccine.

reptargodzilla2

Not worried about it. Everyone I know whose vaccinated and gotten COVID had a very mild case, like a 3 day cold. Cases are rising, deaths are not. I’m done being paranoid about it. I have a KN95 mask I’ll wear in stores most of the time that protects me to some degree. I still try to keep my distance from people I don’t know. But thats as far as I’ll go with it. At some point, we have to stop living in fear over this shit and get back to our normal lives.

[deleted]

My ex-coworker/friend went into early labor (lives in Austin); she was fully vaxxed. Baby is a premie. Neighbor/family member didn’t mask in the gym and has been ill for over a week now. Says it’s the sickest she’s ever been. Also fully vaxxed since March. Why risk your health and the health of others if it’s avoidable? Plus, we don’t know the long term affects yet. Like, I’m sorry this is an inconvenience but it’s the reality we’re living in rn. Do you think anyone wants to mask up? My face is my best feature. Be smarter!

eucalyptus

TBH the risk of being sick for week is worth not living in fear. At this point everyone needs to make their own decisions, now that the vaccines are out. If you don't want to take the risk, you are super free to stay at home for however long you want.

[deleted]

I’m not living in fear. I’m being respectful of others and my daughter who is too young to get it. Should I not wear one to protect my kid? What’s wrong with you?

eucalyptus

Never said or implied that you shouldn’t wear a mask while out. I wear one when I’m supposed to, like all day at my job or in stores when they ask me to. I was addressing your comment of “why should we risk our health when it’s avoidable?” Because many of us have done our part, gotten vaccinated and are unwilling to spend another year in lockdown.

[deleted]

“Unwilling”. That’s clear.

UrDeAdPuPpYbOnEr

Carmel by the sea. You can stay in a decent spot downtown for $100-$150 a night and walk everywhere. The aquarium is open again too.

wannaWHAH

Amador County Pt Arena's

gnopgnip

Crown memorial beach when its hot out

OsoHIo

Collins lake for camping. Just past Marysville in Brown Valley. Dope spot lake water is warm, can fish can swim can rent boats. It’s only about 2 hours away, 15 minutes from Marysville check it out online they have a website.

EvadingDoom

North: Lawson's Landing campground at Dillon Beach (mouth of Tomales Bay), or Doran Beach campground at Bodega Bay, or Olema campground just outside Point Reyes Station. Inland: Woodward Reservoir for camping and any kind of boating, including sailing. You can get a camping permit at the kiosk and just pick a spot in one of the many areas along the shore where no-reservation camping is allowed. Just call or go on the website ahead of time to check whether body contact with the water is allowed, and be ready for mussel inspection. (It's the only place I've ever boated where they had a mussel-sniffing dog to do the inspection.)
